Title: Mail order Slumber party ponies?
Post by: frevill3 on January 08, 2021, 02:20:40 PM
Hello! I'm wondering if anyone knows of the Slumber party ponies being sold as mail order ponies? I just saw a mail order Pink Dreams and recently saw a mail order Pillow Talk show up on eBay. Any info?
Thanks so much!

Were they called Mail Order because they were in plastic bags? Were they from Europe, perhaps?

It's possible they were excess stock. Toward the end of the line, the Slumber Party Gift Pack ponies were known to be thrown into playsets at least in the UK just to get rid of them. I think Pink Dreams and Baby Nightcap have come with the Kitchen playset; maybe the twins as well, but just one at a time. These ponies didn't come with names or any hints to their origin (other than "Made in Hong Kong"); they were just jammed in the box.

Another way these guys were purged was in a plain plastic bag stapled to a cardboard piece with just the rainbow logo printed on it in grayscale. Other ponies sold this way include Mail Order ponies such as Tux 'n' Tails. If I'm interpreting this right, every pony from the set has been found like this except for Pillow Talk.

Here's how they were released:

Thank you so much for the reply! That is very interesting!! The ones I have seen are being sold in the US, but they might have been purchased originally elsewhere in the world. I have only previously seen Pillow Talk and Pink Dreams. Very cool to see another! I am not sure if they were actually mail order. It is possible that they were playset ponies originally. I have seen some mail orders that come in this type of bag and others that have a # on the bag. I cannot figure out how to post a photo, so I pasted a URL for the eBay listing.

Pink Dreams looks about right for how Taffeta describes her packaging. I'm going to say they were excess stock. It's possible that some of these were sold like this in the US, but we don't have any documentation of such a thing happening. If it did happen, it was probably in small numbers.

Thank you so much! Hasbro did some interesting things... Who knows?! My dad saved the packaging from a box of MLP fruit snacks he got me in 1990. There is an offer for mail order Precious Pocket ponies on the back (something associated with buying the fruit snacks!) This kind of thing made me wonder if these were offered as something similar that someone knew of. Have a great night! <3

Thanks for the plug Minty_Myndi!

I've heard all kinds of weird about the Kitchen set here and what ponies  have been found within it. The Nightcap that Minty_Myndi linked to the image of came inside a kitchen in a Spanish (?) box - I think this is normal, for end of line ponies to turn up in the kitchen, but they're not always Slumber Party ponies. End of line had a field day with the UK. Let's go with that. We got stuff from all over.

It isn't impossible that some of those bagged ponies were in dollar stores in the US at the end of the line too. Or because they probably showed up a lot more at the end of MLP, they might have been traded overseas early on. Remembering there's been an online pony community almost since MLP G1 ended, so that's a possible too. I was collecting ponies at boot sales before I got online, and we picked up the market stall ones in 95.  So they were floating around then too.

I have never seen Pink Dreams wrapped quite like that but I think it fits this theme. Mine also came with her wings on the piece of white card that you can see behind her there.

TBH I would be super excited to see Pillow Talk sold this way. I have never heard of her being part of the end of line clearance, but I can't work out why they would have fewer of her than the others given the nature of the set.

Very interesting!! Thank you for the information! I saw Pillow Talk on eBay sold this way twice over the past couple of years. There is a photo of her this way on My Wiki too! She must have been just one more that ended up in a play set at the end of the G1 era. :) Marilyn

Interesting! Does seem that way. I am not aware of her being found in big numbers here, though, which may suggest those got sent to a different country for clearance.

Interesting topic! :)
I would assume they where not in bags in the slumber party box.
It seems on Pink Dreams that the bag is not sealed, but taped, which could indicate that it has once been one of those UK clearense bags that has lost the card and then been  taped. (where the bag itself  on those are not sealed, just sealed with the cardboard attached to it). Also the thickness on the bag seems as sturdy as on the clear bags, much thicker then the bags usually made for mail orders. However, the text on the bag is not the same as on the clearence ponies with cardboards, so I would assume it is not one of those. Neither does it look like the one on Taffeetas page that was included with the kitchen.
But, it DO remind me of the bags from the giftpack extras in the US. The only one I know about is the Scrub-A-Dub-Tub Giftpack (oh, holy grail of mine!), but as rare as those seem to be, there could be versions that we are not yet familiar with. That, or as mentioned above, as a mail in offer from something.

Scroll down on here to see the SADT-giftpack. Its hard to see, but doesnt the bags from at least Spring Song looks like the one for Pink Dreams?

Ooh, nice catch, Leikin. I was wondering about the bag print for PD as well...

I had forgotten about that release but it makes sense...

I have scans of the front and back of a mail order form for the slumber party set. Hopefully the links will show up below

Canada offered them as mail offer two times (to my knowledge ). The last time being year 10 in a giant mega mail offer pamphlet. Not sure if the US were ever offered them as a MO?

That would also explain the bagged ones in the kitchen etc here, as well as why the slumber party ponies were sold with the grey cardboard label in the UK...since all the other ponies found here in that release style were originally mail order (birthflower, Tux, taf babies)...

Cookies to uni :)
