Title: Nastiest Candy Known to Humanity
Post by: Leave a Whisper on October 06, 2018, 12:56:49 PM
Its a hard toss up between black licorice and Necco wafers. Both are horrible. Lemme think about it.

I love Necco and candy hearts :P Also black licorice.

My vote is for Tootsie Rolls :poke:

I guess I will choose jalapeno jelly beans despite not eating them.

I like peppers that enhance food flavors. . . But a candy? No thanks..

I'm not going to consider stuff with flavors of dirt and soap to be real candies.

I like the other candies..

I have a really really big hate towards any candy that tastes like watermelon, since when does watermelon taste like soap/shampoo, bleh! I tried Rootbeer flavour Wonka bottle cap sweets once, eww, never again :X

I must say though, I absolutely love black licorice!

AHAHA what a fun poll.
Candy hearts are a horsing sin. I can't even pretend to like them, they're just so nasty. Why are they still being sold? They're like a craft supply moreso than something that should have a nutrition label on it.
The jelly belly beans that are the nasty flavors are also something I avoid, but it's funny to see my coworkers do the challenge so they skirt by on that. I won't touch them myself, unless its the toothpaste/mint one.

Black licorice, more specifically, salmiakki aka 'salty licorice'. My friend tricked me into eating it once and it was a nightmare from which I will never recover.

Nooo it's the best kind of candy! Black liquorice too!

Most of the candy listed I'm not familiar with. Candy hearts are awful though, I hate the chalky texture. Also not a fan of wine gums or jelly beans. But if I have to mention one, the nastiest candy known to humanity must be liquor fill chocolates. Yuck!!

Necco's definitely the worst of the ones I've had from this list. Haven't had some of these listed (Jalapeno Jelly Bellies and Bertie Botts).

100% agreed, Parma Violets are the worst!!!

I'm also generally put off by any kind chewy sweet like Refreshers, Blackjacks and what-have-you - the texture is really unpleasant and they way they persistently stick your teeth is just plain unsettling.

However, being a renegade... I totally love liquorice allsorts. They taste really nice and I love how cheerful they look.

It's so hard to choose. I don't like any of these candies. I've never tasted Jalapeno Jelly Bellies and I want it to stay that way. I used to eat peeps as a kid, but I can't stand the thought of eating them now.

[slams fists on tables] black licorice! i hatee it!

also yes... parma violets... ugh. at school when they came up in variety packs of sweets people bought in on their birthdays, there was only one kid who would eat the parma violets... but lavender flavoured sweets can be good, just not as a primary flavour! i've had some very pleasant lavender fudge before.

The yellow and pink coconut liquorice allsorts and the jelly ones are my favourites!  :P

Candy cigarettes are bland and overall really unpleasant to eat, there used to be ones with Batman and I think another brand did Spiderman stickers/tattoo in them that was the only plus side to those sweets lol.

They got renamed 'Candy Sticks' over here in the UK

Well never had any of those don't think they are even available in the UK (except maybe in the expensive imported sweet shops)

I hate hate hate Hersheys chocolate  :X had it once never ever again it was so disgusting...... Worst chocolate i have ever had... Even gone off pound shop chocolate is nicer than it and thats pretty disgusting.

Actually, on the subject of awful chocolate, anyone noticed that the Pound shop now has their own knock off Toblerone? I wonder if it has that greasy taste/feel to it like the rest of their chocolate...:X

I bought cheap Sweet Peanuts the other day, and they tasted like plastic and had a strange peanut flavour to them, honestly they're up there with Parma Violets for 'Worst sweets'

I dont understand candy that's primarily wax. Like the waxy vampire lips. Is that even edible.

I LOVE ALL CANDY.  NOM NOM NOM.

Send all your Necco wafers and Sweethearts my way if you won't eat them :-p  They have always been some of my FAVORITES and the factory went out of business over the summer and we don't get those products in Canada and AUUUUUUUUUGH!  So you won't see them in stores to torment you anymore.  Now Brach's has their own recipe for them but the originals... are no more!  *cries*

Also I am a weirdo and I love the salty mint black licorice that the Dutch people eat, it's called Droptke or something like that.  If you hate black licorice or mint, then Droptke is NOT for you!

I voted for the jalapeno jelly beans because AUGH those need a warning before you shovel them into your mouth.

I eat the violets in our garden so I have no problem with parma violet candy.  :D

I will agree about wax candy though... such weird stuff... mostly it sticks up your teeth.

Hershey's chocolate is good when you put it into s'mores but maybe that is the marshmallows and graham crackers making everything all better?  LOL

Ok there are some candies I don't like - anything COFFEE flavoured, ICK.  Coffee is for drinking from a mug!

I don't like the taste of sweet for anything, I hate it.
I use to eat some when I was little but if I had to pick my absolute worst it would be anything that has fondant in it like Walnut Whip is what I think it was called, it taste of rot.

My 'will not eat' candy list includes:

Candy bracelets/necklaces
Candy hearts / rockets (the ones that taste like chalk. ew.)
Cinnamon Hearts
Candy Corn
Tootsie Rolls

Give me all your salted and/or black liquorice!  Admittedly, an acquired taste, but at least it has flavour versus the above.  Some of the poll options I've never had, like parma violets.  Must be a regional thing.

Hershey’s chocolate!! Eeeeew.

Yes it really is gritty and yogurty/sour the lowest quality you can go and still legally call it chocolate haha.

Why is no one mentioning Circus Peanuts? Hideous things that look like peanuts, feel like eating foam and taste like the worst fake banana flavor imaginable. To me they are the nastiest of all times and forever.

I have come to enjoy black licorice as I get older, I guess it really is an old people candy. Necco waffers are chalky but the flavor isn't really offensive.  Peeps are good if youre 5yo or roast them.

Most of these I've never heard of! I hate liquorice though, always did think it tasted like what it would be like if you tried to eat your shoes. Texture too.

I hated those purple things that pretended they were refreshers in a Christmas stocking collection but actually were rubbish.

I hate white chocolate too. With a passion and a vengeance. It's not even real chocolate.

Also not a fan of Hersheys.

An easier question might be what types of candy do you like for me as I don't like many of the choices in the poll.

I can't stand Peeps, Conversation Hearts/Necco Wafers and I stay far away from Bertie Bots beans. The last thing I want is a candy that tastes like soap or worse.

I'm not keen on sweet things particularly, so a lot of these I've never tried. But oh my goodness Lovehearts/candy hearts! I used to eat them a lot as a teenager and I don't even know why, they're horrible! I think the manufacturers must have thought 'let's make a sweet that looks cute and fun and tastes repulsive!'

People's palates were a lot different in earlier times before we had constant sources of high-intensity sugar in all our foods.
Necco was originally started in 1847 and the wafers were part of Union soldiers' ration kits in the U.S. Civil War!

I'm not a fan of licorice of any kind, and black licorice is probably the most unappealing I remember in elementary school when everybody had those scented markers, refusing to use the black one and taking sharpies instead. There is nothing good about black licorice. sticky, foul tasting like what leather would taste like, and smell like...I dunno what. Something awful, that's for sure.

Candy I will not touch:

Black licorice
Candy Corn(why does it look so cute but taste so bad??)
Chocolate covered cherries
Peeps(my teeth hurt just thinking about them)
And I forget the name of that chocolate bar with coconut in it.  :X

The older I get, the closer Hershey's gets to being on this list though. I seem to dislike it more and more every time I have it these days.

I have not heard of most of those on the list so I voted other.

I do dislike licorice (interesting enough, my favorite tea contains it though), but in Sweden we have this rockhard, salted licorice called djungelvrål (djungle roar) which is the most horrible thing you can ever put in your mouth. It is a sacred candy which is suppose to be put in the mouth and soften moist by saliva before you begin the chew on it. People eat it by the fistfull and to say you dislike it is like saying you eat children for breakfast. I can't even.. there are tons of videos of "Americans react to Swedish candy" on youtube and everyones reaction to djungelvrål is accurate in my book. Horrible, horrible, horrible *shudders*.

Anyway, the reason I put other is because the only thing I dislike more than licorice is liqourfilled chocolates and chocolates with raisins and cherries. Every box with chocolate around christmas is filled with triffles with rum, sherry or rum with cherries and I'm like whyyyyyyyyyy?! -_-

Lol I had to google it and I'm pretty sure I've tried it once, and I quite liked it! But it is actually salted I believe, at least it has this super salty flavour that is not found in all salty liquorice candies despite the name. In fact, one of my favourite ones is Pantteri ('panther'), which is coated in sugar, so quite a different experience!

(I keep checking this thread in hopes of finding another liquorice lover, haha! )

That sounds like a winner for being worst to me.

I also am not the biggest fan of licorice (except I like good and plenty so I can't say I hate it completely).. but when a local candy has drastic of a following either love it or else <.< Ya gotta think it's an acquired flavor.. yikes.

It kinda reminds me when I gave my highschool Spanish class teacher pickled plum candy... She was so shocked she spit it out in front of everyone ^^;

Buying food from the Pound shop - something I admit I don't do because it's hard to buy food from a shop that smells weirdly like hamster bedding. I'm not being a snob. I'll buy other things from there. But not food. Seriously not food.

I liked lovehearts as a kid (but I think that's when you're meant to like them, because they're frankly stupid when you get older xD) Refreshers were better though somehow. I don't eat many sweets now (chocolate, yes, but not actual sweets) but when I do it tends to be old favourites like Starburst (Opal Fruits as I remember them)...

I kind of realise that a lot of the things I used to get in pick & mix are also a bit gross. Like flying saucers. I loved those as a kid. Thinking back it was like eating sherbet after putting it in some paper. Yeah. Well. Kids.

I kind of realise that a lot of the things I used to get in pick & mix are also a bit gross. Like flying saucers. I loved those as a kid. Thinking back it was like eating sherbet after putting it in some paper. Yeah. Well. Kids.

Lol glad to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks Poundshops have really odd and disgusting smells to them. :X
Same with me, I'd go into buy a drink (2 for £1 is pretty good) or Bic/Papermate pens and that's about it, the odd smell puts me off food and snacks. I'll go to Home Bargains or the market in the centre for sweets.
Yes Lovehearts! I love reading the stupid sentences on them and giggling XD I was actually talking to my little brother about Flying saucers the other day because he couldn't remember what they were called and I've only just realised that the outer paper like part is the same as the Fake Paper Money you used to be able to buy! To be honest, I never found the sherbet appealing, it was always tasteless and not very sour...

Tootsie Rolls
Palmers Chocolate
the gooey filled Cadbury eggs

I thought I was the only person that doesn’t like Toostie Rolls.  I don’t like the chocolate ones or the fruit flavored ones.

Also not a fan of candy corn or those creme pumpkin things that are sold for Halloween candy.

(I keep checking this thread in hopes of finding another liquorice lover, haha! )

Another liquorice lover here! :silly:
I think the only liquorice I don't like is pure liquorice root, I've had it a few times but it feels like your chewing on tree bark lol

I really want to try salmiakki sometime, has anyone had it? Is it nice?

PM me your address and I'll send you some :) Salmiakki is what was referred to as salty liquorice above (including Beldarna's Djungelvrål). It's basically black liquorice that has ammonium chloride (sal ammoniac) added to it, hence the salty flavour. Most varieties of salmiakki are also flavoured with anise oil. But honestly, there are so many different kinds, it's totally possible to like one and hate the other... I can send some pretty basic ones that I like, they come in small boxes so shouldn't be too expensive to ship! ^.^

I don't know what your dollar stores are like over there, but over here there are various equivalent pound stores, and while all of them sell perfectly ok goods in ok wrapping, the smell of the overall store just makes me not want to buy food from them. So it is a bit prejudiced, I guess, because the food is all sealed and fine. But I am kind of sensitive to weird smelling places and yeah, it makes me think of hamsters. I don't eat hamsters. They don't make good candy ;)

Like you I have a very strong sense of smell. And as you say, it can be a good or a bad thing.

The hyakuen stores in Japan - the equivalent - were absolutely immaculate in comparison. I would've eaten candy from them. I bought so much utility stuff from them when I was over there because yep. No hamster smell...

@StrawberrySundance, so glad you know what I mean xD. It's nice to know I;m not crazy ;)

Whereas I always assumed everyone hated Tootsie Rolls! :P

I hated black licorice flavor as a kid, but I like it now.  At least I like it in jelly beans.  I don't think I've ever had it in 'real' licorice form.

Speaking of candy, there used to be a website where the owner reviewed different types of candy, from common to obscure . . . I remember it had a clip of a Willy Wonka song on the front page.  Anyone know the website I'm talking about?  I don't know if it's still around.  It's been years since I visited it and I can't remember the name.

Thai Tamarind Candy.

I had a manager who came from Thailand and she couldn't understand why nobody liked it.  I hated the taste and I hated the texture. Yuck.

Also, not a fan of "Kinder Joy" candy.  I like real Kinder Eggs but the Kinder Joy junk is gross.

I don't like a lot of these candies so it was hard to choose.  I ultimately voted for the marshamallow peeps.

Black licorice - you either like it or you don't.  I'm in the "don't" team.  However, I do like red licorice!
Necco wafers - never had them but they look like they'd taste like chalk. YUM! (not.)
Marshmallow Peeps - I love seeing these during the holidays (pumpkins, ghosts, Christmas trees, chicks etc.) because they look festive.  At the same time, those bright, artificial colors makes me run like the wind.
Rootbeer candy - not a big rootbeer fan, so thumbs down!
Bertie Botts jelly beans - talk about some gross flavors (earwax?! vomit?! booger?! ugh!)
Candy hearts - heart shaped chalk. No thanks!
Other -  circus peanuts, candy corn, and candy pumpkins...ew, ew and EW!  Although I know that candy corn and candy pumpkins sell like crazy in the fall.

Peeps, candy corn all fall into the same category for me. The nope category, just can't stand over sweet sticky candy. That said, I love all the different colors for the holidays just not the flavor. Bertie Botts beans, my BFF and I regularly eat a box. Whilst commenting on the nastiness, it's fun but seriously taste bud killing.

(I keep checking this thread in hopes of finding another liquorice lover, haha! )

Yep, it is very salty. To be honest, usually it's not real salt or everyone would die of high cholestrols, but ammonium chloride (salmiak) which taste salt.

That sounds like a winner for being worst to me.

I also am not the biggest fan of licorice (except I like good and plenty so I can't say I hate it completely).. but when a local candy has drastic of a following either love it or else <.< Ya gotta think it's an acquired flavor.. yikes.

It kinda reminds me when I gave my highschool Spanish class teacher pickled plum candy... She was so shocked she spit it out in front of everyone ^^;

Yeah.. we have a lot of things in Sweden which require acquired tastes. Tell them you dislike any and you get these looks of horror. Be it salted licorice or surströmming (fermented herring) or ärtsoppa (peasoup) But at least it's fun to see other people try it for the first time .

:X And here I thought black licorice couldn't get any worse.

Everything can always get worse ;). Besides Djungelvrål we have a couple of different salted licorices, medallions are popular as well.. but the former is the top favorite because it's hard while the others are soft.

red liquorice isn't liquorice at all; there's no anise in it.  Just artificial strawberry flavour.

I've loved every kind of salted liquorice I've ever tried, some are better than others, and some are milder than others.  There's quite the range, much more than you'd expect.  The little dubbel zout black diamonds are really good (to me).

I think they're the same company as the one that puts out Bertie Botts Every Flavor Bean.  I think they're some of the same flavors, but they needed a new way to market them after all the Harry Potter movies were done.

The weird thing about Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans--the real ones, not the fictional ones--is they ONLY had the weird flavors. (Like grass, vomit, etc.)  Whereas in the books they had weird AND normal flavors.

I guess in that sense "Bean Boozled" is a little closer to HP than the actual Bertie Botts ones?  Since it has some bad and some good.

So some of column A, some of column B. :P

Bertie Bott's  & Beanboozed are both Jelly Belly products.
Bertie Bott's does indeed have both some regular and some gross flavors. What's included can be seen if you expand the "Flavors in this mix" here
https://www.jellybelly.com/harry-potter-trade-bertie-botts-every-flavour-beans-1-2-oz-box/p/98101
You can pretty much tell what's what by the color.
Some of the flavors are the same as in Beanboozled, which is a challenge game with regular and gross flavors that look the same and you're supposed to spin a wheel that chooses a color and you take a chance at getting one or the other. Here's it's page
https://www.jellybelly.com/beanboozled-challenge

I'm pretty sure Bertie Bott's came first.

Side note: The Jelly Belly factory is somewhat close to where I live. I went there a few years ago and it's really fun to see how they're made.  ^.^ They were also making Sunkist orange fruit slices candy the day I went, pretty cool. I'm not much a fan weird flavors of jelly beans though, lol. I've never played Beanboozled, and never will  :freak: but I have tried Bertie Bots years ago. I distinctly still remember the pepper flavor the most.

Bean Boozled has come out with an additional boardgame as well, with minions! We're getting it to our store! So you get to walk a minion as well as spin the wheel and eat jellys you won't know taste good or bad. They have new flavours as well including minion farts  Not gonna play it but still kinda want to.

Oh my gosh too many things...

Licorice of all varieties
Caramel
Ginger
Toffee
Anything super cheap (the preservatives tend to set me off)
Nearly all 'candies' with a few notable exceptions
Milk and white chocolate
Peanut butter, especially when combined with chocolate
Ume
Anything spicy
Anything super-duper sugary sweet

(It might be easier to list what I do like tbh)

Also, I had no idea Jalapeño jelly beans were a thing. Or Jalapeño candy at all. Who thinks about making candy spicy? I know some people like it sour, but when I think about candy, I think about pounds and pounds of sugar.

Not jalapeno, but chili is popular in candy.
...and scorpions and mealworms! Maybe you'd prefer a bug in the middle of your chili lollipop? :P

Hahaha, insect candy! That’s always fun to see. Though to us it’s strange bug eating is common in all sorts of cultures, so I’m not surprised something like that would be sold here for the novelty.

I forgot about those tequila lollipops with the worm. So gross.
