Title: Not entirely satisfied with photo hosting
Post by: Sunset on September 02, 2017, 05:30:58 PM
So I've been using imgur since the whole photobucket fiasco for the sole purpose of hosting pics for posting here.  But I was on it just now (uploading a pic of a new Tempest Shadow plush find at TRU)and I just don't like all the up/down voting and unsolicited comments.  I'm uploading pics for you guys and not a bunch of random internet trolls.

How are the other photo hosting sites in this regard?

*edit*

And, yup, just got a comment about my "fat wrist melded with my bracelet." (Because you could see my hand holding the plush.) So I deleted my photos and the account.  This is not what I want from a photo hosting site.  *sigh*

I use Facebook. (i don't actually use it for personal life anyway but need it for our business) i have created a private locked album which only i can see. Then to put the pictures on here you right click the photo pick copy img url.
Then on here you click on the picture icon (its next to the world with a sheet of paper in front of it) then you paste the img url between the Img text that comes up and you are done.

So other people can see the picture (on here) even though it's marked private on Facebook?  I might give that a try then.

Yes
Ive been using it for all my pictures recently.

If you have Fb try it out. I was surprised how simple it was no idea why I even bothered with photo bucket before

You can make images private.

Assuming you're using the app (since private is default on PC):

-select your photo
-under the place where you put the title, it says "public", click that
-select "only me"

Then upload! Private images and albums also do not require a title.

Flickr has worked okay for me so far...

I have all my stuff set to private that way all I'm doing is uploading and not worrying about the other garbage. I think PG had the comment and vote system too but I was hardly on there since I was going downhill long before then.

I was going to use my DA Sta.sh for image upload but bleh that is a hassle.

didn't know the desktop version was auto private with images, I just make the albums secret just in case XD The app version yeah I saw that public/only me thing lol

Yeah, the problem is that you're submitting your images to the community on Imgur. They make it kind of seem like you have to now but you don't :)

Have you tried Flickr? I use Flickr for my photos, since its easier to organize, and Imgur for stuff like art, avatars, signatures, etc.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.  I've already deleted my imgur account so I'll try the locked Facebook folder.

i was using dropbox until recently (early this year?) they changed their policy public links and how urls are generated.   now the only way to get it to work is by hacking the generated URL.  (I posted a thread here somewhere on it).

so now since it's so much hassle I just don't post pics here unless people ask or unless it's something monumental.
:/

(for what it's worth - I'm on another fandom forum site that seems to have storage for it's members at no cost.  they let you upload pics on forum posts just like this one. it's an "attachment" option. i don't know how they mitigate the cost of hosting, but ya it's so easy for the members.  i post way more there.)

So lets give this a try.  Can y'all see this?

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

The one problem with this method is I can't save the address from the Facebook app.  I have to come over here and use the pc.

Works just fine, nice shot of Tempest there in store!

(is that the picture people were complaining about your hand in?  For goodness sakes looks perfectly normal!  *shakes head*)

I didn't like the random people rating and commenting on things either so I set everything in my albums to private. Now people can only see my images if I link them and your Tempest plush is cute^^

Yes, as I said, random internet trolls looking for nasty things to say.

But I'm glad the pic shows up.  I'll just use this method then.

Imgur works just fine its just really important to make the photos and the albums private.  I think you got some people saying that to you already. I have never had any comments on my photos on imgur.  I also don't do the smart phone mass load up either.  It freaked me out when I tried to use that to get the settings right. So, I won't be doing that again. I don't have any problems with the site as a whole.

We used to offer that, but it's a big part of what killed our last forum platform - the servers could not handle the load of 10,000+ members uploading photos (quite often very large unedited photos).

I used to prefer Tinypic but that doesn't work anymore (or well, not consistent). I changed to Flickr. I wish I did that years ago!

You don't really need to upload the pictures to your account, you can copy the URL in the stage before that and delete all afterwards.

I use Flickr and I've never received comments or ratings.  I'm not sure if that's because there's no capability for them or because no one ever found my pictures, lol.

Don't ever use Tinypic. They recycle URLs so your completely innocent pony pictures could be replaced by NSFW horrors... it happened to some images I had on Neopets a while back :/

Seconding what Taxel said. Plus, a friend of mine used to use Tinypic and they randomly deleted some of her pics (didn't replace them with anything inappropriate thank god, just deleted them outright). :/

I know, sometimes the picture changes in a car, motorcycle or something like that :). Didn't happen too much therefore never bothered to look at something else. Until now.

I moved my stuff over to Flickr. I like how easy the site is to use. :)

Interesting about the FB private album. I will try that next time I need to post something :)

You can also upload your pictures to Tumblr and then share them.  Just have a Tumblr account, upload the photo in a post, and right-click on it to get the URL. :)
