okay so for some reason i felt like trying to do a custom with sculpey hair today.
And i did her mane and tail and then followed the directions on the sculpey. After she was in there about 4 minutes i smelt burning plastic... and i opened the oven and it was smoking! and my poor pony had fallen over and got melted!
 now what do i do? I just wanna cry!

And for anyone who didn't already know...don't try to bake BBEs!

oh no!! That poor baby!
-
and THIS is why i shouldn't customize!
-
Oh gosh, poor thing. :( How hot did you have the oven?
-
I put the oven on 275' just like the package said... :(
but i have a gas range stove so i wonder if that had something to do with it?
-
It might have been the oven, or it may have been that I heard ponies start getting a little "weird" past 250°F. Maybe it was a combination of both? I don't have any BBE myself, so I don't know if their plastic varies from normal G1. Poor baby. :(
-
You can always ask someone in the customs forum. ;)
-
Oh I'm so sorry! I've always been terrified of melting my ponies, so I've never been brave enough to even try.
-
That picture terrifies me :[
I made the mistake of watching a video on youtube of some idiots microwaving a pony and it almost gave me nightmares.

Trash bin!

Well as far as what to "do" I don't you can save this one. Close her eyes and give her a proper burial. Maybe sing "Always Another Rainbow" over her grave.
Next time... get the no bake air-dry Sculpey.
-
Oh wow you must be so diappointed. I think the only thing you can do is toss the pony. Hey when you are customizing you are bound to have mishaps now and then. As bad as they are its bound to happen to everyone sooner or later. Don't be too hard on yourself. I am sorry. I have had plenty of mishaps with things I have tried to fix and I don't even customize really. Want to, but don't know how...so it happens. I am too embarassed to share the nutso ideas I have had that have destroyed perfectly adorable G1 ponies.
-
Poor pony.
-
I'm so sad but i guess the only thing i CAN do is throw her away... sad day.
-
This happens to the best of us - working with sculptey + pony can result in a blob on your oven tray at times :(
You may still be able to find a loving home for her as is ;)
-
I had pony melt in a gas oven, not that bad cause I was sitting in front of the oven watching the whole time. I refuse to use gas ovens for ponies now :silly:
-
Ddddiiiiiiidddd someone mention a BBE Zombie? I think I heard BBE Zombie... if she needs a home rather than the trash I'll aim shipping money to you and have a go at a total sculpt-over on her. She could still be something.
Melty ponies and customising mistakes happen, don't let it put you off! I'd suggest the problem is your gas stove, try a lower temperature than the pack says next time and see what happens.
xx

i would kinda think that the metal in her eyes would cause a problem, so was a bit surprised it was her feet...=] is it horrible that i want to do this on purpose just to have a 'puddle pony'? (definitely outside in my toaster oven, tho...lol)

If you're feeling a bit adventurous in the future with Sculpey, and you don't want to risk your pony, here's a couple of ideas that might help:
Make a reverse mould of your pony's head. This would be especially easy to do with no hair left for mane or forelock. Simply press clay around the pony's head and use tin foil on the outside for support. Bake this indented clay within the tinfoil to create your own pony head mould for casting.
Once it is baked and cool, gently rub this with vasoline or use Pam cooking spray to line your mould. Make certain you coat all surfaces within it so that you can easily remove the forms you cast. Refill the mould impression with clay (best to use a different color for the head you are casting). You can then rebake mould and head or remove the newly casted head and bake that- but use more tinfoil for support.
With your now-baked clay pony head mannequin model - you can now sculpt and bake manes, forelocks, hats, decorations and rebake that clay head as many times as you like. It's not going to do anything but darken in color and smell like baked clay each time you rebake it. Use gorilla glue or super glue to attach your baked sculpey forelocks/ manes/ decor to the plastic pony bodies.

I'm so sad but i guess the only thing i CAN do is throw her away... sad day.
Nooooooo! You can make a spooky custom for Halloween. She's creepy enough already all you have to do is find a theme. :D
-
Poor gal. A puddle baby is definitely in order.
I baked a bbe gusty's head in an electric oven (an attempt to make nbbe version), her head didn't melt, but she was super soft coming out.
-
I've had good luck boiling sculpy rather than baking it--sounds crazy but it works! Bring a pot of water to a boil (enough water to dunk the whole pony) and put the pony in. Might need a weight of some kind to make the pony sink so all the sculpy is completely underwater. After 10-15 minutes the sculpy will harden and no putting the pony in the oven required! The heat from the boiling water bakes the sculpy.
I used to do this with leather belts, I would use sculpy to sculpt a fancy buckle on the belt, and obviously couldn't put the leather in the oven to harden the sculpy lol. A pot of water is a good alternative!
-
o___o i never bake my sculpied customs at higher then 170, i dont know if it would make a difference for hair, since my customs dont usually have very thick parts of sculpy, but that temp just seemed VERY high. Im so sorry it got melted >__<
-
I'm so sorry... I know that's disappointing...
But...Maybe turn her into Phantom of the opera? Or zombie baby like someone has said. Then she could have a home at the very least and hey, maybe she'll turn out really cool. Mistakes happen, but you can still make something awesome. I make a lot of clay figurines and if you decide to do something prosthetic with her and make her into something else, the air-dry clay would probably be better for your situation. Good luck, deary
-
Nooo!! Don't throw her away!
So she's just a little melted! It's still good it's still good!
-
I think I would bury it.... =(
Its what my mom did to a childhood pony I wrote all over with pen ( not just a little....)
when she gave me the non-specific instruction to write my name on the pony so it
wouldnt get stolen o_0 An hour of scrubbing later it was way worse and got a pony burial
so I apparently would be consoled that it was in a better place @_@
-
Oh no! I agree with truevampiress, though. I think most people put them in the oven somewhere around 200-210 F and just leave them in there longer.
You can also boil them, but I've heard that if it's too thick the clay will fall apart.
It's also been suggested to me to line the baking sheet with aluminum foil before putting the pony on it. Of course, I haven't used sculpey on a pony yet, so I couldn't tell you any of these things for 100%. ^^;
-
Ohhhh, poor little pony. =( Would it be horrible of me to say that I'm actually relieved that it's a BBE and not a 'normal' pony? I mean, there seems to be a lot of poor condition and/or unwanted BBEs to go around... :lookround:
Better luck next time...
-
Oh noez poor pony!!!!
-
I have also read that ponies get a little weird after 250 degrees.
But looks like there are plenty of people who would love her! I say try your hand at customizing her into something awesome! Best of luck!
-
Nooo!! Don't throw her away!
So she's just a little melted! It's still good it's still good!
Best. Simpson's Quote. Ever. *hi5*
-
I'm so sad but i guess the only thing i CAN do is throw her away... sad day.
there is always someone out there willing to take her off your hands. We have great restorers and customizers out there too. :) Even the most baitest pony deserves a home.
-
Wow i didn't realize anyone would want her.
I'll try to clean her up and take some more pics and maybe someone can help me get ideas for some kind of artpiece i can make her into.
(I will post in the customs forum).
thanks everyone.
-
Send her to Dusky! Send her to me! She's still totally salvageable =) For example, if you wanted to re-pose her into a laying down pony, half your work is already done. Or, you can make a scene where she's in water and her legs are covered.
She's not a total loss. She's just not going to be what you had originally intended ;) Listen to the pony and see what she wants to become!
-
Oh no, poor pony.
-
Gah! Poor pony :( Maybe you can still make her into something though? :)
-

I wouldnt give up customizing either. Mistakes happen even to seasoned artists. I use sculpey on most of my customs and always boil. As long as its not to thick it can be boiled.
-
Actually boiling dose not fully cure it so over the long run it can crumble. Low and slow is the way to bake clay and pony.
She can still have a great life, she would make a great dragon pony or there have been some other great suggestions on this thread. We all have to learn some place.
-
Isn't there someone who collects melted ponies like this? :what: Poor pony! This is why I don't mess with oven bake clay. Apoxie all the way, if I burn food on a regular basis, I darn sure don't need to be bakin' ponies! :P
-
omg. so sorry about your custom.
should i feel bad about dying of laughter when i saw the pictures?
-
Sorry that this has happened! :(
-
Aw, I'm sorry
Hope you end up doing something with her!
-
Poor pony! Don't feel so bad. I think one big mistake is something every customizer has to go through eventually. It's like a right of passage!
-
poor pony :( I will bet someone will still take her and still make something out of her. I've never tried baking a pony, but with my luck that probably would have happened to me too
-
Yeah...For future reference, gas ranges tend to be a little hotter than electric... 200 degrees for about 5-10 minutes (sometimes a few minutes longer) depending on the thickness of your sculpture ^^ Don't worry, sculpey has...a learning curve. You'll get the hang of it! The best advice I can give you is set her on a cookie sheet on top of SEVERAL LAYERS of paper towels. Then dip yourself a bowl of ice cream, pull up a stool, put her in, turn on the oven light, set the timer for your desired bake time and watch her like a hawk  Have fun!
-
She needs a proper funeral.
-
Wow, so sorry that happened. However, that may be the best pony zombie I've seen. Like you'd think a real pony zombie would look :P Glad you're going to find her a new home in her state. I hope your next creation goes more the way you're hoping!
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Poor little pony.
I'm so sorry this happened!
-
Gees! I did a custom with clay before it never did that! WOW! you mush really have a powerful oven! Poor little thing! D:
