This crabby pony's name is "Big Sigs." She's big, heavy, an eyesore, and slows everyone down. With micro-sized wings, she doesn't fly, either. She's the bane of the Arena's existence. We are calling on all members to help stomp out big signatures.

 These are the Rules:

All signatures must fit within an area 500 pixels LONG and 200 pixels HIGH.

Total signature "weight" must be less than 60k.

Signatures with no graphics may have up to five lines of text.

Signatures with graphics can have up to two lines of text.

One Ticker at a time - with NO other signature graphics or text.

Note regarding any click-to-grows (dragon eggs, etc) - limit is 3 without any other pics, and 1 with.

^^ All signatures must fit within that rectangle. You may have as many images as you like within it, as long as it fits. When your signature is too big, you can expect a visit from our olive-green gal there. She's awfully grumpy, too.

There are a couple of different ways to get your signature resized, just in case you find it difficult to do yourself.

 * You could PM SourdoughStomper, Kiwi, or Loa for help.

 * Or you could try this (http://www.picresize.com/) website or this (http://www.resize2mail.com/) one.

Remember: only you can prevent "Big Sigs" from paying you a visit!

 What does "weight" mean?

Weight - simply put - is the size of your picture. To find out the size of your signature pictures, right click (on the pic) and choose Properties. There you will see the size in either KB or Bytes. The TOTAL (all pics combined) weight is 60 KB (or 61,440 Bytes).

What types of pictures are the worst for being heavy weights?
PNG files, animations, and movie/video clips are the ones with the heaviest file sizes.

What options do I have to lower the weight?
PNG files are the easiest - re-save the picture in either a JPG or GIF format. Those are a lot lower in size.
Animations and clips - you can save to a lower quality. Might not look as great, but it should fit better.

If you still have questions about your signature, or are having trouble resizing an image, feel free to PM one of the above listed Mods/Admins, or post here, and we will try to help you out. :)

Strike system

All sig replacements are tracked individually - and each counts as 1 strike.

If a member reaches Strike #4 - their signature privileges are revoked for 1 week. This means you will not be able to access your signature at all.

After that week the strikes reset. If Strike #4 is reached a second time (a total of 8 strikes), signature privileges will be revoked for 1 month.

Afterwards the strikes reset once more. Should Strike #4 be reached a third time (a total of 12 strikes), your signature privileges will be revoked indefinitely.

Remember - your signature is a privilege, and you are expected to abide by the rules as you agreed to upon joining the site. If you are not able to do so, you lose that privilege.

Special Note: members that post in the Sigs forum to have their sigs checked, and do return to fix their sigs if needed, will not be hit by Big Bertha and thus will avoid getting a strike on their account.

If you need help or have any questions, please post here or PM SourdoughStomper or Kiwi.

No, sorry. It's 119.31 KB and 360px tall. Please refer to the sig size limits.

Just so you know, the new one is 223.16 KB and thus, way too heavy.

To answer your question, Alrak, I guess you'd have to take it up with Kiwi. She's the one who knows more about than I. :lookround:

Your signature is good to go, hilamb. :bigups:

Hi there,
Can I please just check my sig is ok? Since being warned on the old arena I have been very careful but I have sooo many beautiful adoptables that I wish to use, so I just wanted to check mine was ok SDS?
Thank you xxx

Width and height is good, but the first one is a heavy file size. Mine was too and that's why I had to convert it to make it lighter.

We had to limit it for a number of reasons. To put it simply, the freedom of the dragon eggs (and other click-to-grow creatures) was abused greatly and members were not being responsible for their own signatures, which put a huge added strain on the mods that was not necessary.

Need some help! I know my sig is too big, but I'm not sure which dimension is too big. Is it the height? If I take out one line of text will it be the right size? This is what it looks like right now:

If you right-click on the image and choose Properties, you can see all of the picture's dimensions, and compare them with our Sig Limits.

The weight of your image is 66.89 KB, the limit is 60 KB. So you need to re-save it to change the file size. PNGs are horribly huge files.

Hello,
I got 'big bertha' in my sig yesterday, I'd like to check if what I have done to improve it is ok now? I have resized it, put the image's writing onto two lines, and underneath is my personal request that I need to have there, is that acceptable? many thanks :)
Title: Re: Your assignment: STOMP big signatures!
Post by: Kiwi on June 13, 2012, 02:08:12 PM
Looks good :) most likely the weight/file size was too big. If the original was over 60 KB, that's what would have cause the visit from Big Bertha.

Since I just got a visit.. I'd want to know if my signature is okay now? The eggs for the adoptables site is just one image, linked back to my profile and I just wanna make absolutely sure that it's not against the rules, as it's not like it's multiple images with a link to each individual page.

Just checking if this sig is better? I don't quite understand what the problem was before, so hopefully it's alright!
Title: Re: Your assignment: STOMP big signatures!
Post by: Kiwi on July 04, 2012, 02:44:03 AM
Looks good :)

The sig limits are:
- 500 px wide
- 200 px tall
- 60 KB weight/file size

so if the original was over any of those, that would be why.

I tried, but I failed. I have no idea how to change the weight of the sig, the size was alright but it was too heavy. Ahh well. I'll stick to words for the time being.

If it was a PNG file - save it as a JPG.

If it was a JPG - resave it as a new file, but increase the compression rate when you save it.

So, I have a new computer, am using Windows 7, and when I right click on the image in my sig to check it all I can do is Save, Copy or Inspect Element, which gives me a bunch of computer code but I can't seem to find weight.  Help?  I plan to rotate the images of things for sale and am looking to a short way to check it.   :(
Title: Re: Your assignment: STOMP big signatures!

I have Windows 7 as well, and mine shows up as "View Image Info", at least in Firefox. Should be in the middle section, above Inspect.

Looking at yours, it's currently too heavy, at 76 KB.

It looks like both images were PNG file images. Put together, they were too heavy for the limits. But if you just put one or the other, Big Bertha won't mind. :)

I'm guessing it's because the original version is PNG and is too heavy, file-size. I had to tinker with mine in PSP so it would be lighter and be within the limits.

I had made a sig and resized it using PicResize.com, made sure it was under 60, and that it was under 500 x 200. And it was. Why was it deleted?

My sig was 500 wide, 171 tall, and was under 60. See:

Glad I set it as my sig on another site as well, or I would have never gotten it back since I deleted it from my computer.

The image you link to in your post seems to have a different weight and format than the one in your "extra info" (which is where replaced images get placed.)

The replaced image is a PNG with a file size of 159.63 KB.

However, the image you have in your above post is a JPG with a file size of 32.77 KB.  So that one is safe to put in. :D

A good rule of thumb - avoid PNGs. They are horrible for being huge files. JPGs usually look just as nice and are much lighter. :)

The width and height are ok - but you are likely forgetting about the weight - that needs to be under 60 KB.

I don't know if you can through Photobucket. Usually you have to re-save the file on your computer with a higher compression rate - that makes the file size smaller.

Photobucket can resize and compress, but it's often wrong on the numbers... I was posting pics for a forum that had a limit, and it was always the wrong size. It's best to go back to a picture editing program and do it properly!

Unfortunately it's too heavy (file size) at 94.11 KB (limit is 60 KB). Try saving it as a JPG instead of a PNG (PNGs are space hogs).

W x H x KB
297px × 200px x 28.55 KB
220px × 170px x 30.07 KB

W x H x KB
297px × 200px x 28.55 KB
220px × 170px x 30.07 KB

Will it pass? It is only the tiniest bit

If there wasn't, Big Bertha would've have found it ;) just remember if you check your sig here, you can avoid a visit from her.

Your last sig was sitting at over 78 KB combined.

How do I fix the weight?
Title: Re: Your assignment: STOMP big signatures!

You'll have to open the picture in your editing program, and then change (increase) the compression rate of the photo. I'm not sure how it's done in various programs, but some it's done when you do a Save As on the picture.

297px × 200px x 50.97 KB

The physical dimensions are fine, but the animation put it over the limit at 65.23 KB.

The sig weight is 68kb. You can check this by right clicking each image and adding it up, it also tells you the dimensions. The sig weight is too much though, it needs changing! :)

Post Merge: May 25, 2013, 08:08:27 PM

*The one on the right is 8KB heavier than it should be, so if you change it, it should be just right.

Title: Re: Your assignment: STOMP big signatures!

200px × 237px x 37.41 KB
175px × 259px x 27.28 KB

What I'm seeing is a combined 64.69 KB - the limit is 60 KB. So you'll need to change something to bring it under.
I would recommend staying away from PNG files - try saving them as a different file type (either JPG, or GIF if you still want them transparent).

Everything else involves editing the images in some form.

There are 3 aspects to sig sizes - height, width, and weight. Your sig does not comply with the weight limits of 60 KB - yours is over 200 KB.

I don't think it's fair to get mad at Bertha when you weren't verifying that your sig complies with all of the sig limits.

I did check and it was fine on my end. It would be easier if I had some way of resizing the image, but I do not and I made a thread to ask for help but that doesn't seem to be panning out either. *kicks can* Grrargh!

Well my question is, is Bertha the big brown pony or the fat arena pony that appears in some signatures that are too big? Is Bertha secretly a horse of a different color on her off days? Because seeing her yell at me as the Arena persona is rather...odd and amusing, mostly amusing.

Title: Re: Your assignment: STOMP big signatures!

Too heavy... Painting pony = 136.92 KB, and Daring Symphony pony is 53KB. The weight limit is 60KB. To check this yourself in future, just right click each image, and select properties. From there, it will tell you the number in 'bytes'. To convert to KB (which is what is required here, 60KB maximum) you need to type into google the number of bytes each one has, so your left one is 140206bytes, and the right one is 55213 bytes. Converted, these make the figures above, meaning you are 129.2KB over the weight limit.
Dimensions, width and height added together of both, is fine. No problems there.
You'll need to change it to avoid Bertha, and in future, I suggest checking it prior to uploading ;) That way you know for certain. xxx

Post Merge: June 15, 2013, 11:06:21 AM

* The spongebob pony by DS is acceptable as a signature, since it is 53KB. You'd need to either make one very tiny and change the quality to lesser quality, or just have one pony in your sig at a time :) x

It's way too heavy, at 136.92 KB.

It's a PNG file, which are file heavy to begin with. Plus, it is truly 301 px by 350 px, shrunk down to fit the Arena's dimensions. But the shrinking doesn't make it lighter. If the image were completely shrunk and perhaps made a GIF file, it would be much lighter.

Mop - yours looks good now - sitting at 58 KB.

Twilight - yes, you can rotate them out, so long as there is no more than 3 clickables at any one time. If you choose to add any other sig images (pony pics, adopts, etc) then you can only have 1. You can also put them in your Extra Info space, there's no limit there as it doesn't show on posts.

I only remember being told about this twice...then again I did take a long hiatus so maybe I was told about this in my absence? Oh well, I suppose I just won't have a picture in my signature when I get signature privileges back- for risk of Big Sigs paying me ANOTHER visit.  -_-
Title: Re: Your assignment: STOMP big signatures!
Post by: Kiwi on July 11, 2013, 10:47:52 PM
You are welcome to have a signature pic - it just has follow the rules. Meaning it is the member's responsibility to make sure their pic(s) adhere to the limits, OR to check in this forum first - that's why it's here. The fact that this is your fourth strike would indicate that you haven't checked the pics on your own, and the fact that this is the first time you have ever posted in the Sigs forum indicates you've never had anyone else check it either.

All sig replacements are tracked - in case you doubt our counting:
Jan 28/13 (74.94 KB)
March 6/13 (483.39 KB)
July 10/13 (68.43 KB)
July 11/13 (285.23 KB)

The strikes are a warning system for members to learn to monitor their own sig limits. The mod team is not here to just keep checking and replacing sigs when the limits are ignored repeatedly.

Ugh. The only type of images I can save the pictures as is .png. .Jpg does not support transparency, and my images have round, transparent corners. GIFs can have transparency, except the only program I have that can make images transparent (Paint.NET) cannot edit GIF files. :enraged:

All would be fine if picresize.com actually allowed me to limit the weight of .png files, but what do you know? It doesn't.

EDIT: Ah, okay. They were moved to extra info. That's fine then. As long as my buttons to my sites are somewhere here that's fine. =P

I've heard a lot of good things about Gimp - it's free, and I would expect it does .gif. Or you could make your corner backgrounds the same colour as the Arena background grey and still save them as .jpg.

Pngs are known for being huge, no matter which program... which is why we don't recommend them.

Actual text outside of the image (like links and such) wouldn't add anything. But text as part of the image, it's hard to say - it would depend on the image, each one is different and it depends on a lot of factors. All you can do is try it and then check it each time.

Sorry, no. You can see from my other post that your first image is using up nearly all of your 60 KB. So unless you find a much lighter second pic, it will always be overlimit.

54.4 KB and 21.98 KB = 76.38

You need a paint program - resizing works the same way with any image type.
Unless it's an animation, and then you need an animation program.

Pretty much - all images are created the same way.

You can control the physical size in the sig code (for height and width), but if you are wanting to adjust the weight, that has to go through a photo/paint program.

Looks good now. The amount you had in there before was definitely over the weight limit, and was over the width limit as well (remember the limits are total regardless of number of images).

Yes I didn't realize all the images were counted as a total, I'll be more careful next time!

315px × 198px x 39.25 KB
263px × 129px x 8.71 KB

So it's a bit too wide - limit is 500 px.

Just changed my sig to the right file size. It was the right dimensions, but I forgot to save it for web use. I re-uploaded the smaller size sig image. Can I get rid of the chubby pony now?

Yes, you can remove the banner and replace with your proper image.
