The date for the movie was revealed way back in 2019, and pretty much everything from the early leaks have been completely debunked at this point, or changed up. We really are going in blind! Hopefully it's good.
I think "new cast" does imply a new cast of characters. I think otherwise they'd say, like, "a rebooted series with reimaginings of the characters you know and love!!" or something like that.I hate how accurately you worded that, they probably would have done that, you're right. I won't get any high hopes though.
I'm with those who think "new cast" means "new characters". I love G4 and all it's ponies (they're my gateway generation after all) but I wanna hear about other new ponies. Maybe a mixed group of critters? More Griffins, Hippogriffs, Changelings and Dragons, etc? I feel that was sort of field tested in the latter years. Maybe shorten it to "MLP" and focus on a wider range of toys/characters?that wouldn’t too bad of an idea. It would be a nice shake up to the formula to have half the characters ponies and half some other species. Would love some characters other than ponies right out the gate. I know Hasbro wouldn’t do that, though.
Okay, I'm just dreaming here. but I have slightly more hope for G5 now than I did.
Ohhh, interesting!

But I guess we'll see! This is exciting news either way!
Edit: Looks like the Festival of Licensing is in early October so we won't have too long of a wait. :)
Yeah, "Festival of Licensing" is just a very funny name to me. This year it's online so I guess they will have to drink alone at home while they make Zoom calls.
Waiting patiently for actual images of "new cast"
We knew Twilight Sparkle wasn't returning, but it's looking like Hasbro is going for a full on, brand new cast for this one as seen in the quote:
Waiting patiently for actual images of "new cast"
Right? We've been burned before ;)
Of course a "new generation" can mean anything...it doesn't have to be a brand new concept, just a revamp which is then called "a new generation".
Random,ly this made me laugh, though. Because of how many tabs I had open on my browser already when I opened this one, it cut off the name halfway through. So it just said "Hasbro joins Festival of Lice..."
...Well, that would be new O.o.
Bet you guys 5 bits that the third movie will also be called %u201CMy Little Pony the Movie%u201D, like the first two were.

Oh don't even joke about that... I swear if they do that again I'll..... be very disappointed in them.
It's such a nightmare trying to search for the original movie now. @__@; I mean, I get it, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: The Movie" is too much of a mouthful, but.... come on. Literally anything would've been better than just reusing the title of the 80s film...
No thanks on the cgi 3d. Yuck!i have to wonder if they aren’t, if the collector fan base would make enough noise like the Sonic fan base, to get things to change.
If the toys are nice quality and horsey, I'll bite.
I am praying that by "CGI" they mean "CGI rigs with 2D-looking animation over it", like Transformers Cyberverse (which isn't the prettiest, but also isn't ugly) or Toonboom like the G4 MLP movie (which was gorgeous.)
But I'm keeping my expectations low . . . It's better to start out with low expectations; then anything good that comes about is a wonderful surprise. :)
...THIS, so much!!!
As long as the toys are nice (and varied and BRUSHABLE  ) I'll be happy.
I am so nervouscited. It could be good! I'm particularly happy that we should get a new primary cast. My biggest worry is that it will be too silly like Pony Life or that the ponies with look bad like Pony Life
At least bring back the lower jaw!
This is an announcement for a licensing event, though, so I think "new cast" is more likely to relate to the cast of characters, not just the voice cast. You aren't hearing a voice as you're looking at a licensed image of a MLP or a Transformer on a napkin or paper plate. What matters is if the Transformer is Bumblebee.
Actually I think that is the most likely circumstance, they are going to make a new series where every pony is going to be Bumblebee or Optimus Prime. Like, each pony will be a version of them from a slightly different continuity.
We used to be able to look up licencing information and such, I remember us doing it a lot for G3 wih prospective names being registered.... Is that still a possibility? We should be able to stalk it still! I'm sure sites like Eq-*Chokes on saliva and coughs up a hairball* and MLPMerch may get on the news first.
Jem was all about them being in bands, so if they don't make it music-themed they at least have to make it an actual musical. So, songs that drive the plot instead of "smile, smile, smile" or "cupcakes, cupcakes, cupcakes" (actual lyrics from FiM, lol). Something like the song the princesses sang before Twilight got crowned and stuff. Otherwise the songs would just pad out the runtime. I am looking forward to finding out how they're gonna handle this. I love musicals.
Yeah, I had forgotten that new cast could simply be who voices the ponies, not the ponies themselves.
...Entirely irrelevant in my toycentric world of pony, but that's a depressing realisation.
Now thinking we're gonna get same ponies rehashed with sparkly new voice people instead.
What I'm excited for, just think, that we'll be seeing the "new" ponies definitely by February for Toy Fair! And probably sooner. We got our first look at the 2017 movie cast at Toy Fair, didn't we? At least that's what I remember... Skystar, Capper, Tempest, etc. When did we see the first trailer? I remember being so frustrated because it felt like it took forever to come out, I was anxious to see if it was 2D tween animation or 3D.

Toy Fair for 2021 has been postponed.
Pops head in.k
Achoo! (https://hasbropulse.com/pages/hasbro-pulsecon-2020) Sniff, excuse me, it's a bit dusty. Smells a bit like HasCon did.
No mention of Pony and seems to be very..."boy toy" focused (a whole issue I have with Hasbropulse), but is sooner than the licensing festival and may have a crumb of something.

Pulse Con is going to be a virtual convention, right? Or is the special con exclusive going to be Covid-19?:lmao:

But I thought Pony was for boys now, too! Hasbro must be sitting on mountains of Pinkie Pies, they could just melt some together and sell the result :P

Something about that reminded me of the amalgamated Rimmer monster from Red Dwarf caused by a 3d printer jam...
The horror of a multiheadded multilimbed pink blob shrieking about parties is something that will be hard to rinse from the brain...
My current fear, and maybe my biggest at the moment, is the ponies having terrible names. :( Take the new "collector ponies" or whatever you want to call them for example, Lite Brite and the DnD ponies, etc. None of these names are good. There all on the godawful end of the spectrum. They actually make me irrationally angry. It lacks any creativity. "Uh oh guys, we have some new pony characters, what do we name them? I got it, Pinkmane! And Hearthoof! Jelly Mare!" Pull the first word out of a hat and then choose a horse-related word for the second half. No thought or effort required! -_-
I don't think Hasbro would do this for their next main cast but if they do... I'll start the riot!

Yeah that wouldn't be fun.

They did use Pinkie Pie. In two generations. That name irritated me from G3 and they kept it >< There are a lot of annoying names in G3, honestly, but...yeah, I wouldn't rule out a new cast pony with a silly name.
Let's not forget that they got away with Tink-a-Tink-a-Too already.
True. Adding Kiss & Tell, Pink Dreams and Crumpet to that list.
Also the infamous Kiwi Tart.

2 of the DnD ponies have nice names. I like Woodheart and Star Shadow. Mystaria is a bit clunky, but no more so, then Peri Winkle or Sunny Daze.
Isn't there a G2 Pony named Dainty Dove?Yes there was.

I was just thinking that if the new movie is supposed to have both the new and the old main characters, then won't the style for the new characters have to be similar to G4?

I don't think so . . . I mean, Pony Life isn't in the usual G4 style but people still understand they're meant to be the same characters.
I'm curious if they'll have the same voices, because recently Hasbro has been eschewing Canadian VAs in favor of . . . like . . . random people they found off Youtube. Even for really big productions, like their Transformers Netflix series. (Some of the worst voice acting I have ever heard in a professionally produced cartoon, I was dying.) I hope they continue to use 'real' (professional) VAs for MLP . . .

They were soooo bad, especially Optimus and Jetfire.
I am still optimistic about the new characters and voice actresses. "New year, new luck", as we say. They were soooo bad, especially Optimus and Jetfire.
Dang, they better "discover" me next. Men are voicing female cartoon characters left and right, it's finally time for transisters to voice some brobots

Well, in Japan it's super common for women to voice male roles so why not in the West?

Nancy Cartwright and the English VA of Naruto immediately come to mind. ^.^
None of the VAs from WfC actually stood out to me as terrible, just... not as good as what I was expecting. I’m curious as to why there are no returning actors from previous series. It seems like a high-profile project, so that surprised me.But then they would have to pay SAG/ACTRA pay rates and contracts. It's so much easier when they can poach from young creatives who don't understand their rights yet.
There are other reasons for Hasbro to want to cast independent actors instead of ACTRA ones besides wanting to take advantage.
ACTRA's a union, so while it sets standards for things like how long an actor can work before they need to be paid over time, mandatory breaks, and minimum pay rate, it also has some really questionable practices, including the union fees regardless of if a member gets any jobs or not, or how they aren't allowed to work on non-ACTRA sets without getting special permission (or if they manage to sneak it in and are just credited under a different name, which is easier to do with voice acting, but still comes with the risk of penalties if they're caught).
It can be really unfair to the production teams as well; if you have an ACTRA set it has to be all ACTRA, I believe the exception is extras, but most of them still have to be ACTRA, while any principal characters will need a temporary pass. I'm not sure if they're still doing this, but they used to have a policy where you could get away with not using them for the first couple of features you made, but then it was mandatory. My local branch also has a program aimed at people starting out where they'll give you a discount on the rates, but in exchange own part of the finished feature, which wouldn't impact Hasbro, but is still kind of obnoxious.
So yes, it's probably less being able to over work people found on the internet and more an effort to try and show ACTRA they aren't the only option anymore and break the stranglehold they have on everyone
