Title: FRENCH help needed! Reporting illegal wildlife auction
Post by: Lady Frostbite on April 25, 2019, 04:34:58 AM
[WARNING: The item in question is a preserved, dead animal]

I want to signal boost this from tumblr; there was a pangolin for sale on Ebay, beig sold as a taxidermy specimen. Problem is, the trade in pangolins, alive or dead, is SUPER illegal. The species is under intense threat, and the animal is actually worth more dead than alive.

The auction is down, but this needs to be reportes to the appropriate authority in France for investigation. If the person has their CITES papers, that is one thing, but there is no indication that there is any, nor that the seller has taken any care to research if this is legal to sell.

The page (WARNING, has images of the pangolin https://www.ebay.fr/itm/etrange-creature-taxidermie-tatou-1950-curiosite/113724101485?hash=item1a7a7c136d:g:z9MAAOSw~~NcutJL)

Seller: https://www.ebay.fr/usr/cadisdambrosia?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

It would be VERY illegal to have this animal if bought without paperwork.

The auction looks like that the seller got it from "somewhere". And it could be very well that the seller has been warned by Ebay that they will report this to authorities. If I look to other sold items I don't think the intention is to sell something illegal.
If this is shipped without the correct papers customs will deal with the seller. Most of the packages are scanned these days and with anything odd looking or smelling (dogs do that job) they will open it.
I am not sure if you are in France but I would go to the local gendarme aka police. And they know the way to follow for reporting.

I'm not in France; this post was specifically to help call out this item as selling pangolin items, REGARDLESS of age, is incredibly illegal and the source must be found for this. The seller assumes all responsibilities for the items they list, it is up to them to find out how legal or illegal it is to trade these parts, especially with dead animals and taxidermy specimens. I'm not in vulture culture, but I DO know that those who trade in animal parts are incredibly specific about what they sell, and some items are limited to be sold only in certain countries. This item was to be shipped worldwide.
