Title: new release comic con twilight style mane 6 toy pack
Post by: kingluke on July 13, 2019, 08:07:37 AM
So this is going on on instagram and mlpmerch
: https://www.mlpmerch.com/2019/07/hasbro-announces-my-little-pony-retro.html

So there is a 6 pack going to be available on 1 September for around 25 dollars on amazon.

it has the same style as the comic con twilight.

any thoughts?

I'm not sure if I like them, but for a good price I might buy them.

so what do you think?

At the moment I'm not sure how I feel about these. I kind of wish they were singles and not one big pack as I don't want to spend $50 for two of each pony (one for customizing and one to not customize).

They are an odd mix of G1, G3, and G4... and to add to that there is only two poses (rearing Pegasus body and walking Earth body) and two head types (open mouth Earth and close mouth Unicorn). It's a miss opportunity for them to do other poses, I've heard some say Fluttershy could be in the shy pose with wings and likewise I feel AJ could be in a trotting or rearing pose..

OOOOOOOH I like.  Probably won't get, due to the snubbing that Canada gets with these releases, but none the less...

I've already stated in the twilight thread that I like the style over all. I'm always a fan of a variety of styles-- just because each style will appeal to someone different.

But also like I said in the other "what if" thread... I'm a bit meh on these just because they are mane 6 (because I don't find any of them visually appealing). With <25-30 ponies in my collection, I'm fairly picky about what I add to it. I would of added them in a heart beat a few years back, but not at this point.

I feel like most stuff (and Ragamuffin's excellent comparison images) are all already in the Twilight thread, though probably should be in this one. Maybe a kind mod will move the posts across and merge them together to this thread so the discussion is all in one place?

I like it and preordered it.  I want to show support to Hasbro for anything “in the general direction of retro” releases.

Nng, no :( I wish I could like them, but there's too much about their proportions/ flat looking design that doesn't sit well with me.

I guess I'm in the minority because I quite like them! Sad they didn't do true G1 designs and did more like a G3 thing, but still cute. :)

I actually love that they went with this style and not just because I don't like how g1 looks. It feels like it's paying homage to multiple generations, which appeals to me far more than slapping g4 colors on g1 molds and calling it "retro".

I like them overall but I agree there's something a little "off" about the eyes and neck area.

They are interesting. I agree, the neck doesn't look quite right. I'd like to keep them in box, I think they look great as a display!

I definitely understand people feeling they're a little 'off'. However, I feel like the con-exclusive retro Twilight felt more off and these look a better to me. I can't quite put my finger on the reason why. Nevertheless, I really would like to get these!

Looking at it, I think these 'flow' a lot better with the open mouth pose, thus Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, and the retro Twilight look more off than the others, IMO.

Aw, they are actually really sweet. I like that they are more pastel color than their normal versions. While I would prefer G1s in the original G4 mold, rather than G4s made to look more G1, and am no longer collecting and therefore won't be looking to buy this, I admit it is very cute.

I wish they were bigger, but I like them!  I’m definitely going to order a set.  I really dislike the look of G4’s, so having a set of the main characters that have a G1 look to them is awesome!

Harmonie, I think these look better than the SDCC Twilight, too. For me it's not their neck, but their eyes... they're still not quite right, but they're better than Twilight's are. Something about her eyes really bugged me.

(Granted, I'm sorta picky about eyes anyway, so that might just be me ^^;)

I feel the same way. Its a nice combo! Could it have been better? Yes but this is a pretty cool mix

Wow that's awesome! I really hope the price stays as it is advertised. $25 comes down to less than $5 per pony and that seems suspicious to me. And I know Amazon has changed prices last minute in the past... I really like how they seem to be a cross between G1 and G3 shapes!

If you preorder don't they guarantee you at the price you preordered at even if they change the price up later?

Amazon UK certainly does this, so I assume Amazon US does too.

Oh sweet! I'm participating in the Amazon boycott today and tomorrow to support Amazon workers trying for better working conditions, but I'll go make a reservation later on at the end of the week. :)

I really like how their symbols are re-designed to be more similar to G1 style, with more than just 3 of each element, like G4 symbols often are! Especially love Rainbow Dash's re-design with the multiple lightning bolts.

I say main 6 when I'm typing (in other words I'm using the proper word, not the horse word) but I'm not a fan of all the terms that came out with this generation of MLP :/

I may cave and pre-order the box set... I do have a gift card for amazon but I was going to put that towards something else (-cough3dprintingcough-)

I prefer to call them Lame Six because that's my truth
Similar to G3.5's Core Seven / Bore Seven.

I need these to sell like hotcakes, tho, because it'll tell Hasbro that G1 style (or a style inspired by it) still goes strong.

I'm not a fan of any of the terms really. But particularly brony (for associations, if people want to call themselves that then fine, so long as they're not calling me it), cutie mark (especially for g1 ponies, to me that's just insulting) and everypony (can we not? It's not cute, it's not funny, and it doesn't belong here). Mane 6 is one of the lesser evils to me in terms of, well, terms - but in the bigger picture the message it sends out is hierarchical and cliquey so I dislike it.

@Uni  -that basically sums it up. :)

If someone gets this, deboxes it and is going to trash the box let me know. I'd like the box if there's more G1 art on the back but I don't want the...erm...G3.14 dollymix ponies inside.

I do this, too :) "Mane 6" just looks silly to me, idk why. Maybe because all of the other silly G4 stuff like "everypony" has soured me on horse puns + MLP, lol.

I mean, I vastly prefer "mane six" to "everypony", but y'know.

Oh the term.. -cringes- cutie mark... I really don't like that term. People say that one came out during G3 or maybe G2 (I don't remember) but G4 popularized it. I'll stick with symbol for MLP :P

I think G3. I also cringe at it, it's way too cutesy, but I don't mind people using it for G3 and G4 as it's technically correct. I have a real hate of it being used for G1 though.

Symbol is so much simpler :)

Well, I do too, as a rule, but since it's technically correct for G3 and G4, if people use it for those, I don't feel like I can complain about it.

They're all symbols to me, regardless of generation, because I'm old and grumpy xD.

I don't  see how they're even remotely chibi? They lack the huge bobble heads, their eyes no longer take up 60% of their faces, their legs are better proportioned and have knees and hocks, their bodies are larger and rounder instead of tiny and wonky.

Its just that the necks and chests are all wrong and they lack eye sockets. But it looks like some of the moulds have the suggestion of cheek bones again.

I mean they aren't chibi like G4s are, but they still have slightly chibi looking heads to me.  What I'm trying to say is that slapping a sliiiightly too large head with sliiiightly too large eyes on that body creeps me out.

Their heads are a little big, but that doesn't mean they're chibi, it just means that Hasbro needs to tweak the proportions a bit better.

Well I currently have them on my amazon wish list, hoping maybe they will go on sale at some point but I doubt it lol
Looking at the larger image I don't like how the hair doesn't go further down, you can tell they were trying to mix at least 3 generations in one here.

First the wings are G1, that's a given
The bodies for the winged ponies are supposed to mimic the Truly Pose from G1
The bodies for the earth/unicorn look like they mimic the Valenshy Pose from G3 (at least that's what it looks like to me)
The heads look like a mash-up of G3 and the new G4 heads... muzzle/face is G3 while the rest of the head mimics G4 in how rounded it is

If I managed to get doubles of these well we know what I'm doing eventually lol
