Title: South African Pony Rooting - Restoration Complete
Post by: NightGliderSA on August 03, 2018, 02:26:58 AM
Well, my dream finally happened. Though not exactly how I thought it might: I finally discovered a South African Pony. Yes, indeed, I promise I did. And my world is now complete. However, the girl has no hair except one last remaining tuft in her mane. But I don't actually care, I love her!

What I thought might be interesting to others is this: it is now very easy to see the unique rooting of an SA Pony

Thus:

I will be rehairing her and as luck would have it I already have suitable hair. I can therefore also take a photo of the inside of her head and tail if anyone should be interested.

Ooh! This will be interesting. Such a beautiful gem, despite the condition. Congrats on getting her.
I wonder if you're the first to even reroot an SAs tail! Good luck!

Thank you so much everyone!

I found it tricky to get inside to take the photo's so ended up using my phone. I did take some with my camera, but have somehow misplaced the chord that allows me to download the photo's onto my laptop. I also took some comparative photo's of Paradise's rooting. A few things I noted: the weave is in the same direction and looks similar but is much 'messier' and looks looser. They also 'wrapped' it at the beginning / end (not sure which), which was not done on Paradise.

There are quite a few photo's, so I have put them in spoilers as that is what people like you to do  :)

Firstly, to start off with her head:

The weave is looser and 'messier'

And the other side, not as clear as I would like but the best I could get. There are some loose strands, just as with Paradise.

Now for her tail:

Just what everyone doesn't want: a close up of their butt

Looks like her tail was 'yanked' out. There is some damage to the vinyl.

And then various pictures of the tail weave from the inside

And, finally, a comparison to Paradise who was handily near by and has a loose neck seam. Helpful pony!
Spoiler
Firstly, a reminder of what Heart Throb's weave looks like:

This is Paradise's:

And both next to each other. Paradise on left and Heart Throb on right:

Getting them both in focus was very 'exciting'  ;)

I hope you guys found that as fun as I did  :)

I can't wait to get started on restoring her, but it is going to be slightly tricky as her plastic has hardened quite a lot. From the smell of her she has spent the last 20 years in a container filled with crayons.

If anyone is interested, Cherry Pie from Dollyhair is an exact match:

Wow!  This is super informative, thanks for sharing.  These photos are as close as I will ever get to a South African pony!  Can't wait to see her once you've finished her beautification makeover  :D

Completely off the point but I love that that photo makes her look like a serious academic.

"Well, yes, in my spare time, I read poetry. Hair? I got rid of that. No time to brush and braid when you're analysing the great works..."

Thank you everyone!

Yes, Taffeta, books are an all abiding life-long passion of mine. Those particular ones are very special to me as they have been in our family for a (very) long time. We altered a jacuzzi room to make it into a library instead. Who would want a jacuzzi when you can have more books? Clearly Heart Throb feels the same: she can't be doing with hair when there are books to be read

I am really looking forward to seeing her look beautiful again :)

I had a great day rerooting Heart Throb yesterday so she is sitting and letting the glue dry before I try getting her head back on. I am a bit nervous about that part as her plastic is pretty hard and brittle. It is also unevenly poured inside, so not of an even thickness as with other ponies I have seen and there are 'drip marks' in the plastic.

Anyway, here is a preview of what is to come, together with what I believe to be the reason for her hairless state. Her hair was so brittle that when I tried, very gently, to pull it out with the hemostats it just disintegrated:

This was what was left of the weave of her mane. That which was inside the plugs was left behind and I had to use a needle to get it out.

She also has a mega-sized hole at the base of her mane. The plugs are very uneven throughout and many have broken through into their neighbour's space. Perhaps this is the reason why so many SA ponies have such loose hair plugs. The line(s) one sees in HK (and other) ponies is missing.

My Sunlight feels very hard and brittle, I removed her head when I got her to add a drop of glue to secure her mane and tail in place (they were coming loose). In fact she has lost the entire of her yellow stripe!!

I can imagine it must be hard going rehairing her since her body is so hard.

Sorry that Sunlight lost her stripe PKW! But having seen what I now have I'm not that surprised.

The rehairing was a challenge: I was worried that I would damage her or she would split but I didn't and she didn't (hooray!) and here she is:

I know her hair is much longer than it should be, but I may just leave it like that. Undecided at present.

Wow, what a stunning transformation!

And I take it you restored her tail as-per the existing little holes (to keep her looking more "original") instead of making one big hole?

You must have had lots of fun with this special project!  :lovey: :lovey: :lovey:

Thank you glitterball!

Yes, I tried to restore as close as to the original as possible so I changed nothing except to give her new hair as she had none to start off with and to gently clean her as she was filthy.

And you are so right: this was an incredibly satisfying project

And yes, DrEsmeRose, she most certainly has a prized spot in my collection. She stands on her own mini marble plinth as she is just so special and I am so grateful to own her.
