Hey hey there everyone! I posted this in the MLP Arena Facebook group already, but I know some people don't have Facebook so I'm posting it here as well.
Some of you may or may not remember me, I think the last time I posted on the Arena was in 2009. >.>;; Hello again to all the new and old pony fans! *waves a hoof to everyone*
I'm currently working on an important art project and it's going to feature 6 G1 MLP's as the focus of the piece. It's important to me that these 6 characters be recognized right away, so I spent a lot of time debating what are the most popular (and therefore most easily recognized) G1's. I decided quickly on Firefly. I think we can all agree that she was probably the most popular G1 thanks to her appearance in the first animated special and several toy incarnations. I then decided on Gusty, I think she was pretty popular as a toy for her color scheme and on the cartoon for her spunky personality. But the rest of them have me stumped...
Then I remembered my old stomping grounds the MLPArena and MLPTP so I came back to get the opinions of everyone else! ^.^
I would very much appreciate it if people could fill out the following and post their answers. I'll use this to decide which characters are featured on my art project.
1.) These must be G1's, no exceptions
2.) It would balance the art project more if I could have 2 pegs, 2 unis, and 2 earthies, but that's not set in stone so it's okay to suggest others that don't fit that criteria (I think Rosedust the flutter was pretty popular maybe?)
3.) It's not a must that the characters be from the movie/specials/cartoon, but I think the animated features really made the toys come alive for people so I'm more leaning toward G1's that were in the animated features at this time. But maybe some people think some later toys, like Rapunzel, are more popular?
Post the following and give your opinions where the question marks are please:
I think the Most Popular G1's are...
1.) Firefly
2.) Gusty
3.) ? ? ? ?
4.) ? ? ? ?
5.) ? ? ? ?
6.) ? ? ? ?
Additional comments:
(Thank you for your time doing this poll!! ^.^)

1.) Mimic
2.) Gusty
3.) Bubbles
4.) Applejack
5.) Ice Crystal
6.) baby Crumpet
-
Would say Glory, cotton candy, and Applejack are up there.
-
Let me see who did well on the previous derbies, and we'll see the most popular of those, at least.
I think the Most Popular G1's are...
1. Ice Crystal
2. Gusty
3. Nightglider
4. Fizzy
5. Sugarberry
6. Applejack
-
I think Bowtie is pretty popular too.
-
I always liked Mimic, Galaxy, Fizzy, Wind Whistler, North Star, Lickity Split , and Heart Throb. I remembered those from the tv show mostly!
-
I would say that most recognizable ponies would be:
1. Firefly
2. Bowtie
3. Applejack
4. Sundance
5. Cotton Candy
6. Glory
-
I'll have to think. Red Roses is awfully popular too :)
-
I would say that most recognizable ponies would be:
1. Firefly
2. Bowtie
3. Applejack
4. Sundance
5. Cotton Candy
6. Glory
I would agree with this list!
-
The only ponies I remembered before more recently getting into collecting were ones I remembered from merchandise or specials.
Firefly and Medley.
Applejack.
Baby Moondancer.
Glory.
-
You guys are awesome, thanks so much for your help. ^^
-
1 Gusty
2 sundance
3 medley
4 moondancer
5 cottoncandy
6 firefly
But I vividly remember the seaponies but not there names
I think most of the ponies people have listed from 82-85 are dearly remembered hence recongized : )
I cant for the life of me remember mountain boys being on the show
-
I would say that most recognizable ponies would be:
1. Firefly
2. Bowtie
3. Applejack
4. Sundance
5. Cotton Candy
6. Glory
I really like this list! (And I'm saying this even though Gusty is my personal favourite!:))
Maybe for aethetic purposes though, instead of two pink ponies, I would swap out cotton candy for Medley, then you have 2 pegs as well.
I'd also actually swap out Sundance for Moondancer (I like her but she is not really seen together with the others in the list!) then you have to Unicorns.
(I would really include Applejack, not only was she in the pilot episode - she was VERY commonly owned and appeared on a LOT of merchandise. I never saw the pilot episode as a child but grew up with applejack just because I saw her printed on soap, cot hangers, ribbons, birthday cards...she was everywhere)
Anyway, I think:
1.Applejack -earth
2.Firefly - peg
3. Bowtie - earth
4. Moondancer - unicorn
5. Medly - peg
6. Glory - unicorn
I think thats a good mix of colours and earth/peg/uni ratio and also they work well together because they were all in the pilot together and commonly owned ponies
-
I would say that most recognizable ponies would be:
1. Firefly
2. Bowtie
3. Applejack
4. Sundance
5. Cotton Candy
6. Glory
I would agree with this list!
double agree very much soo these ponies
glory at the top of the unicorn list
firefly being at the top of the peg list
for sure
earth are little hard to pick so 2 out of emery's and kittybethy list
-
1.) Gusty
2.) Cotton Candy
3.) Applejack
4.) Bubbles
5.) Medley
6.) Moonstone
I was trying to think of the colour combination! A baby pony would look cute in there too and so would a flutter pony...

How about rainbow pony Windy? It seemed like everyone had her. When they donated their collections to me, I ended up with 4 extra Firefly's and 4 extra Windy's.
I dunno, but personally I wouldn't include the later ponies like Ice Crystal, Mimic, and Red Roses. No doubt, they're VERY popular with collectors, but one of the reasons for that is that they're fairly hard to find. So I'd say they're not as recognizable to people who aren't as into ponies as hardcore collectors.

I'd agree with that, like how Ice Crystal is popular with collectors but he was UK exclusive and even I never heard of him until I joined this forum lol, so the majority of people who just 'like ponies' and grew up with them, would be unlikely to know him? (great though he is)
-
That's a great point! Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. ^^

I think the Most Popular G1's are...
1.) Firefly
2.) Gusty
3.) Applejack
4.) Windwhistler
5.) Peachy
6.) Majesty
Additional comments:
Applejack I choose because she's very distinctive and memorable (and enjoying new popularity with the new show too), Windwhistler was a main character in the movie and so got a lot of publicity then, Peachy and Majesty both really common playset ponies and used a lot promotionally.
-
1. Firefly
2. Gusty
3. Applejack
4. Medley
5. Peachy
6. Fizzy
-
I would say that most recognizable ponies would be:
1. Firefly
2. Bowtie
3. Applejack
4. Sundance
5. Cotton Candy
6. Glory
totally agreed
-
1: Surprise
2: Firefly
3: Applejack
4: Twilight
5: Posey
6: Sparkler
I only say this as they are the G1 versions of the FiM main cast.
-
well Im not sure if she is popular but I do believe Sundance is one of the most recognizable ones, after all she have atleast 3 versions, normal, so soft and Twice as Fancy, and she was constantly paired with Megan in promotions and such.
-
If you mean most well known in the non pony collecting world too, I'd put Applejack, Cotton Candy and Bow Tie on the list. Maybe Majesty, the early MLP were in the Panini sticker album over here so even people who didn't have ponies collected the stickers.
-

That's a good point! :)

2: Firefly
3: Applejack
4: Twilight
5: Posey
6: Sparkler

I was going to say this too. This way,it wold tie into TWO popular generations of pony!
-
I don't think when people think of the most popular G1's, they are thinking of the ones that inspired the FiM cast , though. :)
-
Everyone owns a peachy.... does nt that make her most popular j/k :)
I think applejack, bowtie, bubbles, majesty, gusty, windy
-
If it were to be done on most recognisable ponies to non-collectors, I would have to say
I think the Most Popular G1's are...
1.) Firefly
2.) Applejack
3.) Bow Tie
4.) Majesty
5.) Peachy
6.) Cotton Candy
These seem to be the ones that people remember from childhood in my experience :)
-
apple jack
sundance
glory
moondancer
surprise
hearthrob
also, on a side note, when i talk to non-collectors they ALWAYS mention seaponies!!
-
Totally, for me:
1. Applejack
2. Gusty
3. Mimic
4. Surprise
5. Firefly
6. Posey
Yep. That's it.
WHY NO ONE LOVES CARAMEL CRUNCH!? It's mah favorite G1 pony
-
Mimic and Rapunzel sure are up there. Minty, too.
-
I think we need to define what you mean by "popular" meaning "easily recognizable" versus "popular" meaning popular for collectors. I'd say Mimic, Rapunzel and even Minty are popular by collector terms but aren't easily recognizable to people who aren't collectors. I actually don't think any later ponies fit into that category, but that's just my opinion. :)
I'd say. . .
1. Firefly
2. Gusty
3. Applejack
4. Cotton Candy
5. Windy (rainbow unicorn)
6. Medley
I tried to keep it evenly divided (2 unicorns/2 earth/2 pegs) and use common ponies. Cotton Candy is who comes to mind for me when I think classic pony. Windy seems to be everywhere. :) And Medley is common and recognizable enough to balance out the 6 (although any of the pegs in the series could fit here, like Wind Whistler or Heart Throb.)
-

Yeah I mean easily recognizable to non-collectors (and collectors too, but not only collectors will be viewing this art piece so I'm trying to get ponies that anyone would have at least seen before). Thank you for asking for that clarification. It's an important one! ^_^
-
I would def have Applejack and Bowtie on the list. I do agree with Gusty as well and possibly Posey and Sundance ^^
-
I stand by my statement that you need Glory on there. She is the *original* G1 unicorn in my eyes, and one of the only ones I actually remembered from childhood.
-
I suppose if you are going for recognizability, you should look at the ponies from the first five years or so that featured in a lot of merchandise and media, especially the ones that are still being made (http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/G1_Retro). That 2010 Dolly Mix has a nice selection of 20, if you just want your choices narrowed down a little; the only one on there that was new to me was MainSail. I notice that they like to work in all the original six in those retro lines, too, but I'm guessing you'll only want one of them to be their "representative". Minty, Cotton Candy, and Butterscotch have an edge for being G3 characters as well, where Minty often starred in G3 movies, and Cotton Candy had several brief appearances in both those generations.
Also you could consider the characters from My Little Pony Tales, since they did get their own TV show and all. :) Starlight may have been the leader, but Bon-Bon tended to steal the show, and Friendship Is Magic often features a Bon-Bon look-alike, so there's a possibility for you.
-
Honestly, the most popular ponies for kids vs collectors I think are going to differ.
If you asked my Goddaughters who their favorite ponies are, they would tell you:
Firefly
Princess Tiffany
Cotton Candy
Moondancer
Baby Cotton Candy
But me as a collector:
Lemondrop
Bowtie
Glory
Firefly
Baby Moondancer
-
Oh yeah, and I have to concur that Applejack seems to be a very famous MLP name, even from before Friendship is Magic revived her classic appearance. I've seen some satirical works that name-checked Applejack despite not knowing exactly what she looked like. :) I think she'll do well to represent very early My Little Pony if you can't fit any of the original six in.
-
I remember you. ;)
Sugarberry and Glory came first to my mind.
Good luck.
-
*squeaks and hugs BridgetsMum* Thank you! It's good to be remembered! ^^
-
Based on our discussions over the years on Old Arena, Arenafic and Trading Post.
Generally the most popular G1's are;
1) Windwhistler
2) Fizzy
3) Gusty
4) Firefly
5) Applejack
My list goes like this (in random order);
1) Galaxy
2) Northstar
3) Majesty
4) Twilight
5) Glory
6) Moondancer
7) Cotton Candy
8) Masquerade
-
I don't know if you still need suggestions, but I would say, based on the first animated special and story books, these six: ;)
Firefly
Medley
Applejack
Bowtie
Glory
Moondancer
-
applejack, bowtie, lickety split, and sundance could be good choices for earth ponies!
moondancer, glory, twilight or majesty could be good choices for unicorns.
medley or wind whistler could be good choices for pegasi too.
-
I always liked Mimic, Galaxy, Fizzy, Wind Whistler, North Star, Lickity Split , and Heart Throb. I remembered those from the tv show mostly!
I would have to agree with this together with Firefly. So you really have a hard choice on your hands.
Personally, i know Mimic was really only featured in one episode of the MLP 80's series, it held strong because of the theme of that episode and it was one i always remembered well as a kid. :)
-
I can't believe no one said Blossom. I thought she was a pony a lot of people had, so non-collectors would still remember her. I don't remember anything from the cartoons I watched.
1. Firefly
2. Blossom
3. Glory
4. Sundance
5. Applejack
6. Moondancer
When the Head Knocker company made G1 pony bobble heads a few years ago they chose Sundance and Applejack. Not sure if there was research behind that.
