Title: New Retro ponies question!
Post by: Queen Eclipsia on February 22, 2019, 06:29:53 AM
Hi! Is it better to buy the retro ponies as a gift set, or individually? I see the gift set on amazon, but my local Target is also carrying them individually boxed. Starshine is always discolored, so I've restrained myself from buying her and I wonder if I should just get the boxed set off amazon at this point.

I'd say it would depend if the gift set is scented. If it is, the ponies are prone to discoloration. There's another wave where the rainbows are NOT scented, you'll wanna look for those since the scents seem to be the catalyst for the discoloration.

Also, there is no way of knowing if the ordered set will be discolored, too.

That's why I said if the set is scented. If it's not scented it shouldn't be discolored...

Have they made a 5 pony set that is unscented?  I know about the singles, just hadn’t heard if they remade the 5 pony set.

As far as I know they haven't made an unscented version of the 5 pack, so I'm pretty sure all the packs are scented.

This helps, thanks! Just to clarify, the unscented wave you're speaking of are individual packs?

For the first set of rainbows, try and get unscented individuals. For anything else, that depends on the set, your space and how many individuals are in it that you like enough.

Yes, individual packs. It'll have slightly different packaging. (won't say scented!)

ETA: just like ladymoondancer's pic I saw scented and unscented ponies right next to each other in Target today. So check out stores you've already looked at :)

Yep, the unscented ones are individually packed. :)

Here's a comparison pic:

The unscented ones won't have "Scented!" in the upper left corner and won't have the circular 35th Anniversary logo.

They are two different shades of yellow o.O. Is that the lighting, or real?

I haven't seen any Rainbows here for a while. I am wondering if they are going to switch over to the unscented here too. I am keeping my eyes open for them, as all the ponies we've had in stores thus far have been in the monolingual US packaging.

I haven't heard anything about a multi-pack without scent. Plus you'd still need to buy Sunlight as she's not in the pack. Poor Sunlight.

They are genuinely different shades, lol! Clipper was telling me that they add tiny beads of perfume to the plastic to achieve a scent.  I guess the beads are yellowish, and are a slightly different yellow than the 'actual' yellow plastic used for Skydancer.

(The weird thing is that you'd expect an obvious difference between scented and unscented Starshine, but I really don't see one??  But there's a big, obvious difference on Sunlight and Moonstone.)
