Title: My very first custom!
Post by: Minty_Magic on February 02, 2019, 04:05:58 AM
First of all, thank you to everyone who helped me figure out how to re-root a pony. I've been wanting to try my hand at customs for years but the thought of rehairing always scared me off.  I'm happy that I now have a solid grasp on it and I'm hoping to make more customs in the future now! For the time being, I started off with persona Sedona Dreams. I figured at least I don't have to worry about coming up with a design and if I completely mess up, I won't have to feel too bad since I already have a nice commission of her from a few years back. :P

I still have a lot to learn, but for a first attempt, I'm pretty proud!

As you can see, she's got one piece of hair that does not want to cooperate. :P I'm working on taming it right now, but if it doesn't want to sit, well, being a little sloppy is definitely her style. ;)

She started life as a very sad Glory. She had a smooshed face and her legs had warped to the point where she couldn't stand. Glory also had no tail, a buzz cut, no symbols, and red paint marks all over. She seemed like a good candidate to give a new life to, so I got to work on fixing her warped plastic first. The face was a little beyond repair unfortunately. It's still a little funky, but it's better than it was before! For her feet, adding the fur helped balance her out!

I think doing a full body repaint was maybe a little ambitious for a first project. I lost a lot of the paint on her head during rehairing, which I'm pretty sure I have an idea of how to prevent next time, but it was disappointing for sure. For my next project I think it will be strictly a rehair so I can better get the hang of that without worrying about flaky paint. :P

In the end, despite her flaws, I'm very proud of how she turned out. :) I hope in a couple years I can look back and see improvement from the starting point, but for now I think she's given me the confidence I need to keep trying!

Oh cool! I’ve also wanted to try my hand at customizing as well. Yours looks amazing for a first try (better than my first try with twilight sparkle and nail polish -_-)

Yay for first custom! Give yourself a high five, she sure was an ambitious project with rehairing, FBR and sculpting! Great job! ^.^ I love her hair blend and the FBR looks pretty smooth, if a little thick (that may have been one of the reasons for flaking).

Looking forward to your next project!
