Title: Toys R' Us Returning this Holiday Season...
Post by: Mythian on June 21, 2019, 06:12:30 PM
I heard about this on Kiro7News here in Washington state. It's all over the internet with many other sites talking about the big news for the last five hours or more.
Could this possibly mean that MLP will return to sacred grounds of our beloved toy stores?
We'll only find out when we go hunting this holiday.

Article cut/pasted below:

The Toys "R" Us brand will continue, as the retail chain that was once the largest toy store in the U.S. will return in time for Christmas 2019 with fewer than ten stores, each of which will be about a third of the size of a traditional Toys "R" Us big-box store. That's according to Bloomberg, whose sources say TRU Kids (the company built out of the remnants of Toys "R" Us) have finally figured out their plan moving forward after months of suggesting that there was life after toy-store death.

Apparently, the plan is for the stores to be about 10,000 square feet, with additional "experiences" like play areas to make them more of a destination. This makes sense in a market saturated with play places that sell toys and t-shirts out of their food carts, but is a different look than Toys "R" Us customers are used to. In the Bloomberg report, TRU spokesperson said that the company was not ready to share details on its relaunch strategy, but perhaps tellingly there is no indication that she actually denied the report.

TRU would also be operating an online storefront at ToysRUs.com in order to generate additional revenue, and mitigating costs by taking product on consignment from producers, and paying only when the goods have left the store. This has its own risks, especially in higher-theft areas where Toys "R" Us would be on the hook for merchandise that was never properly accounted for.

While the market certainly suffered from the loss of Toys "R" Us, toymakers and other retailers have figured out ways to soldier on without the retailer. That means TRU Kids will have to rebuild some relationships and build some new ones. According to Bloomberg, The Toys "R" US CEO has said that MGA Entertainment, who make things like Little Tikes, Bratz, and L.O.L. Surprise!, are already on board.

“This market needs a self-standing toy store, that’s for sure,” CEO Isaac Larian said. “We will sell them inventory.”

The previous Toys "R" Us stores were closed down after it became obvious that there was no clean path to getting out of financial trouble for ownership. They explored the idea of licensing Toys "R" Us but ultimately landed on a relaunch in the hopes that they can make more than licensing to a competitor would.

Sounds promising!  Only 10 stores to start with, huh?  Well, my local store is still standing empty so here’s hoping 🤞

Ten stores means there won't be one in Idaho so I don't care, this won't affect me in the slightest. I hope it leads to more because having no toy stores is depressing but I don't have my hopes up.

Actually a few weeks ago another company (I think) is resurrecting Toys r Us AU. They already have their online site back https://www.toysrus.com.au/ (https://www.toysrus.com.au/)

They got bought out by KB Toys here and they kept all their employees and stock, so I really can't relate.
I don't care what the business is called as long as the people working there are treated fairly.

Will TRU returning mean they'll hire all their people back? :P

I'm skeptical and disappointed by this. After Bain Capital sucked everything out of it It could and then drove it into the ground, they want to use our nostalgic feelings to relaunch? What a slap in the face to all the workers, especially those to whom it was a career.

To me Toys r us is now in the past, if they ever did expand and eventually come back to my city I don't think it would make any difference to me. The vulture capitalism of Bain Capital on both Toys r us and KB toys just leaves me feeling disgusted

Oh these little pop-ups are likely going to be like TRU Express, which was like KB Toys except it was a giant kiosk in the walkway, not even a real store front.  Just temporary booth walls and overpriced products that parents already told Alexa to buy 3 weeks ago.

I'd be quite pleased if they slipped back into either their old store, or the old walmart building.

I really don't care about the physical locations since there probably won't be one in my tiny state but an online storefront to compete with Amazon will be good. Maybe they will carry some things for more reasonable prices. I'm still upset that Amazon was charging $5 for the same blind bag ponies that were $3 before but no physical stores in the area carried them so I ended up skipping them.

Bain capital doesn't own it now.

I could honestly care less. They became overpriced and I was glad the one here went under. The managment sucked and the employees were rude. I think the stores stopped being worth going to at the end of the 90's.

Thanks for mentioning that, that makes sense, of course they sold off everything including the "brand value" type of assets. Still I do feel disgusted by what happened and even if it comes back it won't be the same, but overall it will be good to have an actual toy store again

I never blame retail employees for being rude, having worked many retail jobs myself including Toys R Us haha!

it's unwise to wish the demise of stores. We have already lost many major chains and stores, We have less and less options and certain business move closer and closer to monoply status

I think everyone is pretty disgusted by the way that things panned out. :( Various factors played into TRU’s demise, but vulture equity firms were definitely a big part of it. It was a sucker punch to employees especially.

But in any case, the current TRU Kids management includes some of the former TRU higher-ups. It may never be the SAME, but it could still turn out well. :) I hope that they can eventually rebuild a solid foundation, and maybe one day even return to their former glory (though that’s a difficult thing, in the digital age). Competition is always healthy for the retail market.

TRU often had things that Walmart and Target skipped over as well as some pretty neat exclusives. Now I'm worried I'll even find a Shopkins set I want because I haven't found it in Target and Amazon only has it as part of an assortment. So I if I order it could get sent one of the 3 sets I already have. If TRU still existed I could see which set is which and pick the one I need.

I worked retail most of my life.  I sure will blame them for being rude. They just were lazy and didn't want to answer questions or help people. The stores all sucked and I stopped going years ago because of that.

Edit: I know they have exclusives which I never bought because of the area mine was in it was even more over priced that most.

I don't think I've really noticed the absence of TRU since Smyths recently opened up opposite the old building. It'll be nice to see what happens next.

So the employees at YOUR locations were mean, and yeah I get why you wouldn't want to shop at a place that was so negative. That doesn't mean that they were mean everywhere, nor does it mean that they would be mean at a new store.

New stores in areas are good. It means more opportunity for jobs (even seasonal is fine because some people need extra money for the holidays). And that touches everywhere from just the area the stores are in, logistics / supply chains, toy companies (like little tykes, where now hardly any of their stuff IS in stores).

I hope it works out. I hope that it might land more permanent stores and expand. More brick and mortar stores are good for locals. I just don't see how people can not care about that.

Old TRU was a sinking ship. It obviously sucked for a lot of people. But there's NOTHING wrong with trying to start over again. :/

I don't think video stores will ever make a return unless they end up like FYE where they mostly sell merch like Funkos. Digital distribution services like Netflix and Spotify have replaced physical media for the most part. But kids still need toys.

XD I can dream though. The closest dye to me is too far. The ones close to me closed long ago. Although Long beach had 2 thriving video rental stores...so go figure.

Hopefully they can pay a better wage and not have unpaid overtime lawsuits. I was getting letters about it well after I wasn't working for them. We had a hard time keeping good help because it was literally the lowest paid box store in town. Taco Bell and McDonalds had higher starting wages! I worked there because I enjoyed selling toys since it's what I do as a side ebay hobby with vintage. I farm the rest of the year and really I hate sitting around all winter so the pay wage isn't always the biggest factor I look at when applying for holiday work. Like (Am I going to be happy with this job for 3 months and not want to run away screaming).

With only 10 stores, I don't think I'm getting my job back.

The consignment thing is interesting, I wonder if it will push companies to only sell safe-selling toys there at risk of them piling up like Glimmies/Zak Storm/BattleClaw/etc?
That could be a problem, TRU was always good bet at finding very specific things because they had more shelf space for each compared to Target/Walmart/etc.

There's no reason to be sorry. There was nothing that could save the sinking ship that Bain Capital did. These are NEW investors who own TRU, who are trying to start up the company again. We need more brick and mortar stores. So it's not bad at all.

Being in Maine, we won't see our stores return for a long while, if ever. My experiences as a toy collector wandering the aisles of TRU gave me very fond memories, so I'm hopeful that they can return and be run better than they were before.

The large building that used to be my local TRU sat empty for over a year, but it was bought recently and it is a furniture store now. Disappointing. I do miss having a toystore where I can go and walk around and see what the kids are into these days. We haven't had KB Toys for many years. I now have Walmart and Target to search, and that's about it, other than online of course.

It seems like TRU has a special presence in the US, and that long history, so it would be great if it could return there, even in small amounts.

It's a bit different over here. I know some folk grew up with it and it was an awesome store, but there's not quite the same history attached somehow...

Unlike Woolworths, which I still wholeheartedly mourn :(
