Title: Allergic to Horses - Does That Include Donkeys
Post by: gabumon on June 11, 2018, 09:20:16 AM
So yeah I'm allergic to horses (ya sad irony - mlp collector)  but I wonder does that mean I'm also allergic to donkeys?  I've read they are separate species so maybe there's a chance I'm not?

Do not know for Donkeys, but there's a breed called Bashkir Curly who's ok for allergic people because they don't have a regular coat.

More than likely yes you would also be allergic. They are technically different families but very similar.

@ColdRuru those Bashkir Curly horses are like the Poodles of Horses? right? :)  not really for me, but interesting nonetheless!  thanks for sharing.

@Maddie ya you're probably right - they're more similar than they are different I'd guess.

They are more like sheep if I've understand well. When clipped, they just look like normal horses but yes, with normal coat they are all curly. It's REALLY cute, I've seen a few in my life.
The main problem is the price, they are expensive because of their particularities and the high demand from the allergic people (at least in EU)

My mom is also! She loves horses also!  I am so far lucky that I am not to them. But I am to birds and so many other things! :(

So am I.  Have loved horses all my life, and found out the hard way when I rode a friend's horse for like five minutes when I was in high school.  It sucks.  That's why I just collect the plastic ones (and MLPs).

If you are concerned maybe ask for an allergy test? <3

Those bashkir curly horses are indeed hypoallergenic, making them pretty much the equine equivalent of poodles. They even have the same curly hair. It’s quite funny!
As for the donkey allergy, I’m not sure. Horses and donkeys aren’t the same species, but share the same equidae family. If they were the same species, donkey and horse offspring would be fertile. Sadly however, mules cannot breed. Donkeys have 62 chromosomes in 31 pairs. Horses have 64, held in 32 pairs. The breeding between the two of them creates a creature with 63 chromosomes. And an odd number of chromosomes cannot be split to make offspring. Because of this, science would suggest that horses and donkeys are not the same thing, but are related enough to produce healthy offspring. Even if it is infertile.
I’m not an expert on allergens, but I’m guessing that you might be allergic to donkey as well. A google search yields results for milk allergens in both donkey and horse milk, but nothing about hair. It might be wise to ask a medical professional for the answer, and to test.

yeah last year I did have what they call the "prick test" where they poke your arm with a matrix of allergen-containing needles and measure the skin response. ...  that Horse one about sent me to the ER! X)  my arm swelled up really large!

but my understanding is that they only test/tested for common animal allergens: cat, dog, horse, feather, cattle.  So i'm not sure they have a vail for Donkey.... maybe if I somehow located "essence of Donkey" for them they could test me with it?
