(Sorry for sloppy photography :P)For all those who didn't get a chance to go to the fair, Hasbro brought along some really awesome production boards that showed the conception of several of the wedding toys including Cadence, Shining Armor and their castle. It basically goes like this idea->drawing->3D rendering->prototype(s)->editing->final prototype. The castle they had on hand actually appeared to be hand carved out of foam! It was a really neat insight into the design process. :lovey:
Now onto the fun stuff!

I think I almost cried when I saw they had done a real brush-able shining armor and then decided against it XD
-
Awww...that prototype SA looks a bit girly but still better than the one we got!
-
REALLY wish they'd gone with the nylon hair . . . Thank you for sharing these pictures, it's amazing seeing the process!
-
Thank you so much for sharing Rhini! Thats amazing...
And I will join you with the silent tears for the "real hair" SA...I much prefer him!!! Seeing the process is fascinated.
-
I love the prototype SA oh MY GODS. HASBRO, WHY??
-
Hasbro y u no brushable hair SA D| And it looks like they decided against wing gradients for Cadance as well. The two things that would've made them better for me.
-
Thank you SO much for sharing these pictures
-
Whoa, these are so cool~! I'm really loving that prototype Shining Armor~
-
Thank you for posting this!! I saw a couple photos in the fair forum, and have been wanting to see more, especially about SA hair and prototype. ^^ The blue pony looks amazing, I wish they had kept it (of course, with the eyelashes, he looks a bit girly).
I also think the Astra hair looks pretty cool. o_o
-
But guys actually have eyelashes, so it always drives me crazy when they don't because...it's so...it's so weird.
-
Those prototypes are so cool! Wish I could have gone to the fair, sooo far away! Thank you for sharing!
-
Yay! Thank you so much for posting these pics
I love seeing the design processes of things.
-
Thanks for sharing. The pics are awesome.
Oh SA....I'm so sorry about your hair....
-
So interesting! Thank you for posting :)
*joins line of people naffed of that Hasbro chose troll hair over nylon hair*
-
That prototype is adorable. I really wouldn't mind if they used that one for any future boys.
I liked the "Astra something" hair best.
-
Proto SA looks like RD. Seriously, that doesn't look good at all to me, a masculine RD with a horn instead of wings, not cool looking at all. Not all protos are cool enough to want.

He looks like Rainbow Dash because he has some kind of blue color?
-
thanks for these!!l
noice also that SAs legs and body were more stocky all around! and his rump wasnt so tiny.
-
I loved the first idea they had for the prince! Much cuter! I'd love to get my hands on him! I'm not so fond of white ponies, so the pale blue is more appealing to me. Plus, of course, the brushable hair was a much more attractive than troll hair!! Hopfully any more boy ponies they make for the future will have brushable hair!
It's also amazing if they really carved that prototype castle out of a type of foam board! I guess the original has to come from somewhere before they can make the mold. I just never thought of the material they would use.
-

Yes, this is my reaction too. It took me a long time to get used to the boy ponies in the show because they didn't have eyelashes. That's just weird.
I like his prototype face better than the real version. His "real" head ended up way more angular. But I like the white body better than the prototype. "Pink bride and blue groom" is just so ugh.

He looks like Rainbow Dash because he has some kind of blue color?
Probably also because of the rainbow-ish hair :) I personally feel he looks like a G4 re-incarnation of G1 Ribbon ^.^

I really like his stocky body better, it's not quite as stylized as the end result.
I work for an electronics company, and apparently we carve our prototypes out of wood! Crazy!
-
Dat blue Shining Armor!! He's so handsome!
Very cool, thanks for sharing!

The eye shape, and it looks like rainbow hair, I can't be the only one that sees it.
-
:P Good call Rhini! That is who he is a little reminiscent of!

I think he looks more like RD than anypony else, his pale blue body looking almost like RD's, his eye shape and color being nearly identical, and his yellow and orange hair colors being the exact same as RD has.
Honestly, I feel like some people like to compare new pony stuff to G1s whenever they can, even if it doesn't always make sense. *shrug*
-
I have this castle, and it is awesome!!! Thanks so much for the proto-type pics:)

I think its more a colour comparison that anything :) thats all...

I suppose, it's just silly sometimes.
-
I like the prototype boy better, but he looks like a little kid (or should I say colt, heh), so probably not a good idea for a groom pony ^^; Oh my gosh I love that "ASTRA" hair for him! Wish they had gone with that one!
Gotta say I much much prefer Cadence's current eyes to the prototype design. Actually I'm very glad they went with the whole current Cadence design. I love that toy so much!
-
But guys actually have eyelashes, so it always drives me crazy when they don't because...it's so...it's so weird.
What I meant was that those eyelashes look weird, not eyelashes on guys in general. :P I like the blind bag eyes on the boys, I really hope they use them in the future!
The prototype does look like RD, similar color, pretty much the same eyes, but they had to use something for a test run, lol. The face shape looks different though... not quite like the female ponies, but not like Shining Armor's either o_O
-
I actually think prototype Shining Armor looks like g3 Whistle Wishes. . .
Wish they'd kept that nylon hair. Such awesome pics! :)
-
Brushable SA, and the stocky mold... I weep for its loss, would have looked a lot better. :(
Still cool to see how the playsets are created though. I'm impressed with the foam board prototype, that must have taken lots of skill and patience to make!
-
yeah, I prefer the hair on the prototype as well. haha
-
Woow!!! This is sooo awesome!!! Thanks for sharing!!! :D But what a shame they changed the hair on Shining Armor, I actually like the first prototype better!!
-
I hope they decide to use that prototype boy mold in the future. The angles on the face are so much more attractive than what they actually released.
-
i love that castle, if i ever get it im going to paint it that colour :P, i really do not like the tacky colours it is now and i really love the pony couple prototype's better.
thanks for sharing
-

I like the prototype mold better too. I agree with what someone said earlier, it looks like a mold for a younger boy pony, a colt. Maybe they will use it as a colt mold with a slightly smaller scale.

I think that would make my year! Someone go suggest it XD
-
I like the prototype Shinning Armor more than the finished product. The prototype has great hair. I don't understand Hasbro sometimes. ;..;
-
Aww I really like that prototype! I wish they would have gone with the nylon hair as well!
-
That prototype is SO cute. I really really wish they had gone more with a design like that...I can't stand the look they ended up actually using for SA. Oh well, maybe that means they have a design for future boy pony brushables. HA. I can dream! ;)
-
Aw, that prototype SA is adorable. Would have bumped him up to 'must get' rather than a 'eh... maybe'. Really not loving what they went with, especially dat hair.
-
He looks like a cute young boy with real hair, and abit girly, With the hair he has now he is more manly! But still hope they bring out brushable boys soon!
-
It's sad for me to see this thread.. .because they came so close to actually making a BOY PONY!
I'm talking g1 big brother style, they had big bullky bodies and it looked great that way. I agree the prototype has a somewhat girly head, but I would gladly accept that in place of the released version of SA with those strange hyena legs.. Have you ever seen a dog in a dog wheelchair with tiny legs due to muscle atrophy? That's what the prince looks like to me.
-
I prefer the new shape/silhouette of shining armor. It looks more masculine. I wish they would've kept the fabulous hair like with the big brothers though!
-
I agree, the prototype SA looks better with his nice brushable hair! That foam castle is pretty impressive. Thanks for sharing pics for those of us who couldn't go! :)

…Considering the proportion of real horse legs, Shining Armour is actually pretty damn bulky. The entire G4 art-style has bulky legs in comparison to real horses. If that's what you call muscle atrophy, I'm not sure what you'd say about race-horses.
Not to say that I don't like Big Brother Ponies, but saying Shining Armour's legs are unrealistically thin is… bizarre. Very, very bizarre.
Though not as bizarre as saying that the leg size is what marks the pony as a boy and that because of the leg size Shining Armour is now 'not a boy' despite being marketed as a boy, written as a boy, voiced by a boy, referred to by his peers as a boy...

I think I see what Jinxxy is saying! Shining Armor's hind quarters look thin compared to his front! The big brother ponies had equally bulky fronts and rears. I think maybe the designers had a more human image in their heads when designing the final Shining Armor - like a human man with muscular upper body and narrow hips  . I don't like human body design on ponies though and I wish Shining Armor was more equally proportioned! But most of all I wish he had real hair!! :(
-
I wish they would have gone with the real hair for shining armor but im glad they didn't give him those girly eyes
-
Thanks for these pictures, they're fascinating.
The thing that struck me was how cool that prototype castle in the first picture was. What they ended up with is just a facade, but that first castle looked like a proper playset.
-
While I think SA is good how he is I really hope they come out with another boy using that blue prototype mold. He's adorable! :good:
-

Thats such a great point :) That castle would have been an honest to goodness awesome castle - although no doubt it would have retailed about $60 plus!
-
woow look at those models, the SA prototype is lovely though I still prefer the one we have XD
-
Wow- awesome! Thank you SO much for sharing! I loooooooove prototypes...
-
thanks for sharing.
i want that castle soooooooo much, i dont like the cheap made one
-
I think the prototype looks less like the cartoon especially the face. Too cute and chubby. It would be cool if they made more boy ponies in both molds!
-
Thanks for sharing this! It's fascinating to see their creative process. I like the initial prototypes but I am sure they had reasons for changing them the way that they did.
-
That castle makes the one we got look lame, then again I only paid $30 for the whole kit-and-kaboodle.
I wish they'd make one out of a few base pieces and a few gimmick accessories but every other part is cardboard so it could be massive and cheap, oh well.
-

And I would have gladly paid that for a nice playset. :)

I bet the designers were sad when the castle got pared down so severely in order to make it cheaper to produce...
