Title: Inconvenient Magic Tricks
Post by: Taffeta on July 19, 2019, 02:28:00 AM
So I was thinking about this the other day, and a conversation from a while back in the shoutbox, about ponies (particularly in the comic, and on backcard stories, but also maybe in the animation) whose magic tricks may seem awesome but really are probably quite problematic.

The one we talked about in the shoutbox some time back was Curly Locks.

Curly Locks turns petals into ribbons when she blinks.

I can imagine she's not popular in Posey's garden.

She probably also has a lot of issues with environmentalists.

Imagine what happens if she gets something in her eye.

Definitely not the pony to invite to a wedding.

Good Weather - everywhere she goes, the sun goes with her.

Basically, she's a walking drought.

Also on a blinking theme, Caramel Crunch turns rain into popcorn when she blinks.

In a way she's a worst case combination of the above two.

Polluting the environment with popcorn litter.

Encouraging the baby ponies to eat between meals

And obviously, causing a drought.

Any other backcard or story pony abilities that maybe sound good at first thought but in reality maybe are a bit inconvenient in everyday life??

Haha i love that you re-used the whole Curly Locks is a black market ribbon seller convo we've had on the shoutbox, that might be my favorite thing that happened here.
On the topic, Fizzy's power (in her backcard she dreams of a waterfall turning into root beer and soda and it does in real life ) could be really bad if what she makes appear isn't limited to food, and even if it is tbh (imagine a dream where paradise estate turns into a giant waffle house or something). And even if it's limited to sodas, what happens if she dreams that one of her fellow ponies turns into that? This is super dangerous since you can't control dreams.
Also Milky Way can summon stars, one wrong move and all of ponyland disappears because a star appeared too close.
...Yeah i don't think i want to live in backcard ponyland, i could disappear in one second if the wrong pony sneezed, and that's not even considering the fact that everything seems to be alive there.

Tafffy   turned spaghetti in to a yummy desert. What if the ponies want to eat spaghetti instead?

Munchy turns baseballs and baseball bats in to hamburgers and hot dogs. What if she does that during a Ponyland baseball game?

Not to mention the possibility of accidental horses-eating-meat conundrum that sparks up!!

@Jorgito - Milky Way, the Black Hole Pony O.O.

I have this strong feeling that Sky Rocket (the sparkle pony) flew around on a giant magic rocket and that seems a bit dangerous to me.

Also, Galaxy had a magic telescope. Is she the nightmare nosey neighbour..? Or is she just keeping an eye on Milky Way to make sure that she doesn't swallow up the universe by reorganising the constellations?

PLUS!

What IS going on with Moon Jumper and that cow jumping over the moon?

I found a couple more

TAF Yum Yum can make raindrops turn in to candy. Candy would probably hurt if it hits you on the head falling as fast as rain does.

Cranberry Muffins can turn grapes in to cranberries.

Good Weather confirmed for Groudon (https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Groudon_(Pok%C3%A9mon)).

(Does this mean there's a primal version, too? :silly: )

I am laughing irl, what the heck are these drought powers  I don't remember this stuff. Now I imagine Ponyland littered with ribbons and popcorn and everybody's parched.

We can apparently add Yum Yum if she also turns rain into sweet snacks (destroying teeth and the environment in one fell swoop. How dastardly can these ponies get!).

Another one for the list.

Tuneful.

When she wriggles her nose, she makes things 'tuneful' - but according to her story, she also makes them loud enough for other people to hear the tunes too.

She's the pony on the train whose phone conversation you can always here no matter where you're sitting.

She's the pony whose stereo is always hissing out music even when she has earphones on.

And she's the pony who WILL REVEAL ALL YOUR SECRETS if she happens to sneeze when you're having a private chat.

...Beware of Tuneful in hay fever season.

(But it's fine, because Curly Locks can turn the flowers all into a hairdo and the world's secrets are safe).

Lickety Split can turn mountains in to ice cream by kicking her heels together 2 times.

Scrumptious can make watermelons appear and also turn them in to mountains.

Good Weather is really clearly a U.K. release with that backstory - most of the U.S. wouldn't consider "eternal sun" good weather

I couldn't survive wth her around, as bright, direct sunlight gives me migraines.

And yeesh, so many environmental disasters. G1 ponies were real ecoterrorists. Plus, ice cream mountains sound dirty... are they just touching the ground? And imagine how fast that would melt, especially with Good Weather around.

But she is not just UK, she was sold in more European countries in fact

Yeah, but you guys in Spain call her Turista, right?

I actually don't know her name in other translations, but Good Weather is her English name and the UK isn't exactly famous for 'good weather'. Mind you right now it's quite sunny and this week is going to be hot. I think she must be lurking O.O.

so-soft twilight backstory: “Welcome to my costume party!" Twilight greeted her guests, dressed like a movie star in a glamorous gown. "Who's that in the space suit?" Locket asked from behind a colorful clown mask. The ponies were having fun guessing the new arrivals and sipping punch when, suddenly, the lights went out! "Time for some midnight magic," Twilight giggled. She wiggled her ears and all the candles on the table flickered onto the floor. They danced a beautiful waltz as the punch bowl bubbled a merry tune. Delighted with the surprise, the ponies joined in for a midnight dance by candlelight!
I’m not sure on the specifics of this power. But in a hypothetical scenario, wiggling your ears and lighting every candle around you might be...disastrous if that’s all that she needs to do. No focus or anything. She’s sleeping, wiggles her ears in response to a bug landing on them and the nearest candle lights. And an unattended flame might be bad, even in pony land. Good news, she’s probably a great guest at birthday parties pulling the old “never going out candle” trick.

It honestly makes me wonder also what was in that punch.

And whether Tuneful was at the party, given that the drinks are apparently singing.

Nice find :D Definitely potential for unexplained infernos.

Actually her Spanish name is Solete (somewhat translated to "Little Sun" but the meaning refers rather as someone that is a very good person). Turista is the name of the set per se. I think the set was called Holiday Pony in English?

Where I live is one of the sunniest areas not only of Spain but of Europe as well. I think she has made her permanent residence here, lol. (You can take her, I prefer rainy days )

Ah, ok. I've never seen her in box in Spanish so I only have the insert name to go by. That makes sense xD.

I have a friend from Spain and she has said similar about the summer weather. But here it's going to be pretty hot over the next week, so she's definitely already here...O.O.

For some reason she has Mt Fuji in the background?!

I'm just imagining Lickety Split turning the Tetons into ice cream and the valley flooding with a giant sundae. There would be chocolate chips and cookie dough clusters floating down the river. :haha:

night glider One evening, Night Glider gave a midnight party. When the ponies arrived, Night Glider blinked her eyes to make twinkling stars dance in the sky. As Mr. Moon sang a lullaby, the ponies waltzed with the glittering stars until Mr. Sun smiled in the sky. Night Glider sprinkled stardust on the ponies to give them sweet dreams, as the sleepy ponies slipped into their beds.
Not so inconvenient for night glider herself, but more for anybody trying to use the stars to navigate at night. If the stars are dancing and changing position, how are you supposed to tell where North is? And if it happens when she blinks her eyes, her powers might activate more frequently. Least lickety split has to kick her heels together two times. She can think about not doing it. Night glider? You can’t just not blink.

Bouncy can turn dust specks in to beachballs by blinking. What if she's around when the ponies are trying to clean the Nursery of Dream Castle?

Ribbon can tie ribbons around objects by splashing her tail in the Waterfall.
