Title: Does anyone have just one gen that they stick to?
Post by: Faeriefalls on November 14, 2017, 10:43:44 PM
I'm a returning G1 collector and as a result I mostly resonate with those ponies especially when collecting. But since returning I've found the fim world and characters are actually really sweet! I have started to watch the show recently and I'm not mad about it!  :silly: Its weird for me because I really like G1 and the fim storylines, but I actually cant stand the new G4 pony figurines. I much prefer G1 and after that I like the G3s as well. BUT I didnt really ever get into the G3 stories. So if only there was a pony line and storyline that I loved at the same time thatd make things a whole lot easier.

I'm curious what generation you stick to, if you stick to any at all. Do you have your gen or do you branch out and enjoy all of them? Are there any gens you just cant stand?  :what:

I'm a G1 only gal :)  I have made the odd exception with a couple of G3's (but I have less than five, and mostly they are minty versions of my two little daughters' favourites that I cherish purely for sentimentality. And a couple of others whose colours just caught my eye).

I don't dislike G2's and G3's - just not interested in collecting. And at the risk of having fakies thrown my way, I just can't do G4. The fandom, the aesthetics... Personally it/they just do nothing for me

I am a G1-2-3 collector. I can't stick to only one gen, I find the others really cute. Well, those three. I really don't like G3.5 and I'm not really sure about G4. It depends but I don't want to buy them, I don't get the same feeling owning G4's than my other gens. ^^

G1 only for me!

Only exception is when I see other gens "in the wild" for a bargain price for possible future trades or for my kid to play with, or my kid wants one of the current g4s - but those are for her

I really enjoy all of the gens honestly!
I have more G3 than any other gen just because that's mostly what I grew up with and I never got rid of my childhood collection. They also seem to be by far the easiest to find secondhand at thrift stores and antique stores. I hardly have any G2 since they never seem to pop up secondhand around me. I've eased off G4 a bit just because there are hardly any new characters and I'm crunched on space so unless its someone I'm really interested in I've been passing most new releases. I still love the ones I do have though!

I suggest you to allow multiple choices to your poll, it may be better. (And also add G3.5, I'd be interested to see how many people collect them. ^_^ )

I like most gens, I seem to dislike reboots. I don't like G3.5, and the new G4's annoy me as well, because I don't like the new heads (especially the princesses and the boys), or the wide-set hind legs. Horses don't have ultimate thigh gap!

I adore G1-3, and find it hard to choose a favourite for sentimental reasons. I have considered selling my G4 collection, mostly out of boredom and being sick of repetition. but they're staying, because I still love them nonetheless.

I added G3.5 (I honestly just forgot them oops!) but I couldnt edit for people to have more than one choice, from what I could see anyway.

Even though G1 had ended a bit before I was born, I still 'grew up' with G1 and a bit of G2 just because my family wasnt super well off and often kept a lot of older toys and hand-me-down toys from my older siblings. But theres still a soft spot for G3s because when they came out, I was young enough to think they were super pretty. I still preferred my old ponies but these were shiny and new.

Isn't it the "Maximum votes per user" in the poll options ? Just make as many as there are choices. But I don't know how a "poll editing" looks like, I just know the "poll posting".

Yeah it was there when I made the poll but its gone now that I want to edit it unfortunately.

I'm G1 only.  I was tempted with FIM, but every unicorn figure had evil eyes.  So I got one Fluttershy and one Applejack when they first came out, but that was it.

All of 'em! I was G4 exclusive for a year or two, but now I really love G1 and they get priority right now. I really like the new poses that G4 has, and the weird heads and legs don't bother me!  :silly: It's okay that they aren't popular, more clearance ponies for me!
I also don't mind G3.5 that much, I'd actually prefer to have more than I do now. They don't pop up in thrift stores as often, though.

I collect a little of almost everything. I started with G1 and I love them best of all. The toys and the toons are varied, beautiful, adventurous  and whimsical.

I  fell in love with G3s because they reminded me of G1s. They're just as beautiful and varied, though the cartoon is, impo rather dull and saccharine. Got some nice songs and lovely looking animation.

G4 eventually pulled me in kicking and screaming. I'm not crazy about them, because their deliberate deformity irritates me as a model horse collector. Its bad quality, and Hasbro's sudden love of repetitious characters annoys me. Plus much of its peripheral fandom leaves a sour taste in my mouth for their behavior.  But some of the toys have pretty colors, so I've got a growing handful. The show is too cookie-cutter for me to be seriously interested in it.

I don't like 3.5 at all.

I don't have any G2s yet, as it took me a while to get used to its style. It's not the thinness that bothered me, but the awkward proportions. Small, moosey muzzles, strangely angled legs and horrible joints in the articulated ones.  But I intend to have a few. I like the royal couples, the unicorns and a few of the non- jointed ponies for their daring colors and unusual symbols. Soon. I'd like to try and get one next year.

I only collect G1. Always have.

I have a lot of g3's but never collected them and all loose G2 and G3 that can be found around here are just saved from flea markets or gifts.

G1 with some G3's, a few of the G4 unicorns because I love unicorns of any generation. But the first two are where my heart and collection is. Honestly with G1 and G3 it's a case of what I can afford and right now that's G3.

I wish I could be a G1 only collector. I have been very torn because I just like all gens. :/ So I got into just G1s at first then I saw G3s. I liked them as well and so on. Now I have a huge collection. So im a forced multi generational collector.

Hmm, technically I collect all gens except G3.5 (just can't get into them) but I mostly focus on G1 and G4 - G1 is my favourite, and G4 because they're available in shops and thus are easier/cheaper/etc to buy, so I tend to get them when they come out.

Horses don't have ultimate thigh gap!

I focus on G1.  The G1 show is what I grew up with, so it has a place in my childhood.  I also like the design of the toys themselves.

I try to collect only G1, though one G2 I found at a thrift store and a couple of G4's from Target and Goodwill. I also have a lot of Equestria Girls. I have one G3 (Starsong) because I don't like G3. I love Starsong though, lol :)

Wow! Thanks for the replies everyone! I dont know if I can reply individually! It seems like a lot of people are in the same boat as me. G1 is favourite or priority, with G3-4 being secondary. I love to see what everyone collected though! Did your gen collection start from a specific pony you just clicked with?

I can answer that one. It was Medley. The rest is pony history.

In terms of collecting it is G3 for me. The only other generation that I have any actual brushables from is G1, and that's only two.

The very first pony I saw I had to have was Candy Cane, then Jazz Matazz, and then... The list kept on growing. There are still so many I wasn't able to get, but that's fine. College is much more important.

Nice! Im pretty sure my first ever pony was G1 Applejack. My massive obsession was over Sparkle Ponies though

Theres some really nice christmas G3s I will admit. I like the colours a lot in that gen and wish G1 had some of those newer combos.

I do have ponies from all generations (no MLP is left behind if found in the wild!), but G1 are my focus and I have way, way more of them than any other gen.

I always thought G3 was my second favourite, because they look like G1, but it turns out I have amassed quite a lot of G4, and Equestria Girls of course. I love Equestria Girls!

Story Time: My girlfriend (who got me into ponies by showing me her childhood collection - though I don't think she realised how obsessed I would become!) was at peak Pony Owning Age just as G2 were coming out in the UK. However, as her family weren't very well off, her ponies were all G1s from charity shops. They were generally very cheap, so she had quite a lot of them. Her best friend at school had a handful of the new G2s. My gf felt very sorry for her friend that she had so few ponies, and that the ponies she did have were not "real" ponies, but strange skinny impostors! :D She now appreciates G2 a lot more and we own a few, but she will always be a G1 girl at heart - and thanks to her childhood collection being my gateway drug into MLP, I think I will be too :)

I am a G1 collector. I have ponies from all the generations but it's only G1 which I consider a proper collection. The others I have the ones I like, mostly. The G2 we collected a lot when they were in stores but they've been away in storage for a long time and I don't actually know mostly what we even have. I sold off half of my G3 to keep only one box full which are ones I like and that didn't bother me at all, so I clearly wasn't attached.
Many of my G4 have special memories attached - I often pick them up on holiday, so I have three from Finland, one from Czech Republic, two or three from France, one from Austria and one from Portugal. I also have Fluttsi who my sister bought for me as a good luck charm for my trip to Japan so she's really special to me and has had her photo taken all over Japan as well as in Lisbon. The others I buy if I like the look of them but I am not fussed about 'collecting' them.

I don't like the new moulds for the G4 and I don't really like the mane 6 (except my special Fluttershy that my sister bought me). I don't like the series, either. It's literally just "that's pretty, I like her, she's coming home with me" for most of them.

But I don't have anything like the same sense of excitement as I do when I find G1 ponies or get new G1 stuff or even remembering how it used to be in stores. Nostalgia is super powerful to me in my collecting, I think. So I will always be a G1 person, though I don't hate any.

I don't consider G3.5 really a whole separate generation but I don't have any of them and don't really intend to.

I don't really remember this, since I was 2-3 when I had my first G1 MLP but my mother tells me that while I had Windy first, it wasn't till I got Baby Blossom, with all her accessories, that I really played with the ponies. Then they became like mother and baby. I only had a few though up till the end of 1987 when my Dad got a new job, and there was a little bit more money around. Before I had just one here and there but from around 1988 I started getting more than one pony from a set (Mountain boys = 3, Party/TAF ponies = 3) so that was when I wasn't just getting bought them by parents or grandparents but was also saving my own money to buy them too. I know I bought at least one Mountain Boy and one Party Pony with my own money.

I think 1987-8 when I was 5-6 years old was when it really took off. Perhaps it was getting Sunburst when my sister was born...though I think the first pony I remember choosing was Tropical Breeze after my 5th birthday...so perhaps it was really her?

I stick to two Gens: G1 & G3. I grew up with G1. When I got back into collecting as an adult, I first got into G3. I liked the variety, that their look was reminiscent of G1, and that they were more affordable. After a couple years, I also began collecting G1 again.

Thats awesome, Taffeta! I agree with you on the G4 moulds. I dont mind the mane 6 characters but I prefer a lot of the other characters more. The only main characters I ever really like from franchises like mlp is the MH main ghouls. Although Fluttershy I probably resonate best with or perhaps a dash of Rarity (but only a minute dash). I like some of the unexpected heroes though!

Personally I dont consider G3.5 much of a thing at all. They didnt really ever take off for me.

Nice! Majesty is so beautiful. I think my mum just found Applejack in an Op shop to be honest and thats how it all started.

I'm leaning towards that as well. I'm G1 but have found that I do grab any G3s I see in Op shops too. G1-2-3 are the ones that I find collectable.

My first G1 was Windy. I still need to get her back in my collection in fact. Rainbows and unicorns were everywhere in the 80s. She's so beautiful because she's both. She was a gift but I dunno who from? I was very young.

My first G3s were a 4-pack of earth ponies. Stardasher, Denim Blue, Rainbowdash and Sparkleworks. I gave away 2 and am customizing one. Still have Stardasher however. They were a christmas present from my grandma.

My first G4s were Diamond Mint and Lira Heartstrings. I gave them away, but got them back later. They are very pretty unicorns. I love the water cutie gimmick. In an entire toyline of lazy and blah, this set is so unique and beautiful! And totally unlike anything that came before it. Lira is just elegant in her colors and symbol. She reminds me of Bee-bop and the second one I bought, doesn't have a poisonous chemical smell. Wth is Hasbro doing over there?

I've decided that my first G2 will be Prince Firefly. He seems fairly easy to find, is very affordable and has dark and bold colors.

That’s awesome Leave a Whisper! It’s great to have ponies you enjoy that span over several generations! I really need to get my small G3 collection out of storage and see who I actually own. I don’t know names or anything unfortunately! Only really know G1 names and even then I can get confused between their actual names and the names I used as a kid because they were easier or I was just rebelling! :silly:

G1 only. :) I like some designs on other generations, especially G2, but I just can't make them count unless they're G1. :P

I'm a multi-gen collector.
My first ponies were Ride-Along Fluttershy and the Celestia and Luna 2-pack, bought at Target in 2011. Later that year I also bought G4 Applejack, Rarity, and Twilight Sparkle. At the thrift store I found my first G1s and G3s: a bag containing Sparkler, Skyflier, Rainbow Flash, Scootaloo, a Ponyville Scootaloo, a fakie inspired by the G1 Carousel Ponies, and I believe McDonald's Minty and Rainbow Dash were also in that bag. I also ordered Rosedust off eBay when a cheap one turned up because I really really wanted her in the wake of seeing the movie and End of Flutter Valley - she is my favorite pony. Yard sales (I forget if they were late that year or early the next) yielded Forget-me-Not, the doll that was the base for my "Grown-up Megan" custom, and my sole G2 (Sundance IIRC but not sure). 2012 was the year I started buying ponies in earnest with the money my spring seasonal job. eBay, forums, thrifting, and a collectables/antique shop in town for G1s, Target for G4s. And so on. G1 and G4 have been my main focuses, though I have picked up a few more G3s (namely Hidden Treasure, Royalette, and Bashful Bonnet plus more McDonald's G3s, which are just the right size for interacting with regular G4s) at yard sales and as I got more into it ordered a couple off eBay: Razzaroo, Star Catcher, and I want to say that's where I got my G3 Pinkie Pie. The one gen that I haven't really gone to any trouble to collect more of is G2.
