Title: 35th Starshine
Post by: Gator on August 29, 2018, 01:38:34 PM
Those of you who've had a chance to find 35th anniversary Starshine, are you finding her in good shape?  I bought the other five rainbows but I've had to pass on Starshine TWICE because of her condition.  The first had a misprinted symbol.  The one I found today had a less than perfect symbol too, as well as orange marks on her leg and wing.  It almost matches the orange in her symbol.  Also, her body and head already had a ever so slight color mismatch.  Are the rest of you guys finding it hard to find a nice one?  Issues with others in the set?

My Starshine had a lot of dirt(?) smudges and loose glitter on her hidden side, which was pretty disappointing when I opened her. There are a few tiny, faint, orange-brown stains left over even after I cleaned her up, but not bad enough to really bother me, especially since I put her right back in the box -- her scent was choking me!

The "problem" Rainbow for me has been Parasol. One had a bad eye-paint smudge, one had really patchy glitter, one had double-printed(!) symbols, one had her pink hair rooted off-center by a good half inch... I'm sure I'll find a good one eventually, but in the meantime it's pretty disappointing.

I don't know if it's visable in the pic much but the first Starshine I found had a large gap between her head and neck. She also had loose glitter that I thought was dirt at first on her wings.

Skydancer also had a neck gap but it was much smaller.

Mine has a few bubble 'dents' in her hoof and lip. It looks as though her plastic bubbled in the mould. She looks like she has a hairlip. It's sort of cute.

I finally got her :) Mine has a slight neck gap, nothing more. She seems to be a problematic pony.

I did find a perfect Starshine, but she was the 3rd one I found. First one I saw had a massive neck gap so I didn't buy her. The 2nd one had small brownish spots on wing and neck gap, 3rd is perfect. Just found a 4th and it's a perfect one. They sell fast, but Target does restock them. I've noticed the rainbows tend to have flaws. Those of you who have one with a neck gap, have you opened her? Since their heads move, I am wondering if the neck gap is just because her head is pushed upwards and if really she is fine. My Skydancer's neck looked weird, but after I opened her I was able to push it back in place. One Windy had a glue spot near the symbol. Moonstone was the worst with yellowing in more than one spot and smudged symbol. Sunlights and Parasols I see look good.

Haha same here Kiwi!

Honestly, hearing about the consistent low-quality conditions of these 35th anniversary ponies really break my heart. May everyone find an unsmudged, unbespoiled anniversary rainbow pony.

The misprinted symbol may be a reoccurring issue or perhaps were all in the same production run. I have seen a couple Starshine's so far with misprinted symbols. This is a side by side of the two I have, the one on the left I bought first (misprint on the outer dots and was hard to find her in stores) then about a week ago I found a second Starshine with a nice symbol.

My husband joked that I should keep it MIB as a "rare variant" factory error. Ultimately though, we need to remember they are "toys" even though we are collecting them. A $10 toy just doesn't have the same quality control as a $50+ collectible.

I've heard at least 2 cases of ribbon staining in that set as well, and at least one was Starshine.

I’m curious about the neck gap now too. Starshine  and Moonstone were the ones I wanted the most out of the 6 and I was dissapointed when I saw that huge neck gap.

I honestly haven't analyzed my ponies (I know Moonstone has some glitter on her front leg), but I've never been super worried about my ponies being absolutely perfect, I'm just enjoying finding them and having them. If I'm too picky, they will be gone quick and I won't have any.

I probably wouldn't have been picky about the orange dust marks, but I didn't want a misprinted symbol.

I got my Starshine today and she only has a minor gap, though her head is off center enough to make a narrow shelf visibile at her neck.

Yep!  IF I find her, she will be in better condition much more so than my childhood one: mohawk mane chop (thanks, neighborhood boy), no tail, little glitter left, chewed hooves, and going greyish-brown, plus lots of age spots!  :D

Personally, I haven’t seen a single Moonstone that doesn’t have the planet and ring misaligned. On mine it barely looks like they’re a part of the same symbol.

Pretty much was my view on it which is why I bought the one Starshine with the misprint symbol. I lucked out and found a nicer one later on. These things are flying off the shelves so fast I view it as buy it when you see it.

My Starshine is in good condition. She does have a neck gap, but I think that is mostly due to the loose heads. However, she is yellowing -especially the areas that have been “hugging” the plastic. So her head mostly, but also on her back. Her symbols are perfect, though!

Starshine is still the only one of these I've not seen in real life. My John Lewis restocked but only had Windy, Skydancer and Parasol on shelf when I went, so I've yet to see or smell her in real life...

On the Moonstone subject - again, I've only seen one of these, which is the one my sister got me, but she looks ok, no mismatch. She's actually the best quality wise of the ones we have loose...Parasol and Sunlight are fine but their heads roll very easily and the box hair is a bit awkward. My Parasol has hers tied back because it refuses to tame :/ Naynie's Skydancer has a slight symbol misprint but nothing major really.

I haven't deboxed one of my Windys yet. I haven't decided which I should, the one in the bilingual box or the one in the English only box. Maybe I should look at QC as a guideline as well.

Regardless of their less than perfect conditions, I'd still be thrilled to find them anywhere.  Being stuck in Australia means importing them all, and that's more money than I have right now.  It's very sad though that they're such poor quality in this release.  The 25th anniversary sets were pretty good, not as high quality as the originals granted, but were at least decent.  Hasbro's production quality has declined so much in the last decade or so.

The 35th anniversary ones are waaay better quality than the 25th anniversary ones, LOL.  Their squinty eyes and thin tails just killed me.  Some of the 35th anniversary ones have flaws, but every single one of the 25th anniversary ones had those darn eyes.

Back on topic, I opened my Starshine and her symbols are great.  She has a slight neck-shelf, nothing major.  Not big enough to be considered "a gap."  No stray marks.

I haven't had yellowing problems with Starshine, but my first Moonstone has turned into a mess in the month that I've owned her. :( She was fine when I bought her (although a little greener overall than I'd preferred) but she has since developed large patches of yellowing on her head, neck, back, and shoulder. I don't know what the cause is, since she's been in her box the whole time except for one quick comparison shot with original Moonstone, and she hasn't been handled or stored any differently than my other Rainbows who aren't discolored (yet! *gulp*).

I don't know if you can see it very well in this picture, but the yellowed parts of her are nearly as bright green as the grass on the packaging. It's especially bad around her neck and forehead. Here's a comparison picture between her and my new Moonstone who came in the bilingual packaging and is still an even, glas-green color... for now.

I hope it's just a freak occurrence and the retro Rainbows don't have the dreaded discoloration curse that some G1 scented ponies are known to develop.

I wouldn't be surprised, to be honest. It's likely the chemical that they use to scent the plastic, but that's my guess because I had Strawberry Shortcake dolls from way back when that did similar on the harder plastic spots like the arms that dolls like Lady Lovely Locks and most of my Barbies did not develop.

It's a really rough guess, but a guess nonetheless.

My Starshine had faint brown stains on the reverse side near the symbol, assuming its a residue related to the glittering process. I didn't try to get them off yet, I am letting her air out in a different room before putting her in my new pony cabinet.

I still have not seen Starshine. At all, actually. She's the only one we haven't bought, and she's the one that is never on shelf in John Lewis. I have seen all the others I think now...I'm not sure I've seen Moonstone on shelf, actually.

Today I saw a Parasol that fits with the discussion here about discolouration. Again, English only box. She was going yellow around the neckline and on her back. It was really sad to see :( . Unfortunately not really possible to take a photograph in store, but it didn't look that good. I looked at the 2 Skydancers there and both of them looked absolutely beautiful. I wonder if there are just a few bad batches with perfume overkill destabilising the plastic colouring...

I hope they don't scent any other sets.

Even if they are mint when you buy them, they can still get yellow soon after. I had three completely mint ones (Starshine, Parasol and Moonstone) start yellowing. Will keeping them in darkness help? I'm moving them all to keep in complete darkness instead of displaying them. I feel like the scent is discoloring them so I'm not sure if anything can help. The collector ponies I've had on display for months still look as perfect as the day I got them. I also really hope they don't scent the other sets.

On the plus side -

take heart that if your 35ths are imperfect, you can use them for customising (instead of using an original 80s pony).

You get to model with new plastic, no dirty smells and have less of a guilty conscience about changing a (near mint) pony!

Let's turn these negatives into positive opportunities (but yeah, agreed, it's a bummer buying something that looks perfect and then discolours after a few weeks, I have not noticed it with my lot, though).
Title: Re: 35th Starshine

Oh wow, I'm really disappointed to hear these are already discoloring! I don't mind the neck gaps too much and the wonky symbols don't bother me at all (I bought my Moonstone because her symbol is so out of line it makes me laugh! :P) but if this set is going to get splotchy and discolored over the years that kind of bothers me. If it's the scent doing it (which I kind of suspect) then its a flaw that could have been so easily avoided by not scenting them! Frankly I'm keeping all of mine in their boxes because Starshine in particular smells awful! I'm not a big fan of scented toys in general.
I'll be keeping an eye on mine to see if anything happens. I wonder if it's best to keep them in the box of if its better to let them sort of air out? If it really is the scent affecting the plastic is there anything that can be done to preserve them?

Huh, I guess I'm lucky, my Starshine hasn't discolored at all. She only has a few stray pieces of glitter from her symbol, no other flaws. I can't believe they are discoloring this quickly >_<

I think I got mine from the first batch. A target near me had a full set of six, so she was guaranteed to be there. The set wasn't on the floor yet and she has the three holes for the scent, not the heart. I've had her for a while too.

Just to add to this, I haven't seen any packaging with the heart. Not even the bilingual packaging from Ebay.

I am not sure we can track these issues down to one specific packaging style though...can we? The Parasol I saw with discolouration was in the English only box...

My Starshine is also okay. She's in a bilingual box with the heart shape to smell her scent.
I think it's terrible that so many of the Rainbow ponies are starting to discolor already. I wonder if it's the scented plastic?

I kind of agree with glitterball though...

It's not good that they are discolouring, but it does seem to affect just this set. And to be blunt, if lots of people in the US start complaining and returning rainbows for flaws or issues like this, the possibility of the line ending prematurely is high....and even more possibility of people in other places like here not getting even wave 3.

It isn't good that this is happening, but I worry a little about perfectionism towards a $10 toy getting out of hand.
Title: Re: 35th Starshine
Post by: Ponyfan on September 24, 2018, 02:38:17 PM
I'll be keeping mine even if they discolor. :) It's just a little dissapointing that we're already seeing issues with these. I think a couple of people mentioned their ponies having flaws on the non display side when they deboxed them?

I also agree that if a lot of people start returning the ponies they've already bought then Basic Fun might cancel the line. The retro Strawberry Shortcake line did pretty well although Peach Blush was released at a bad time (when most Target stores were putting the older Strawberry Shortcake dolls on clearance)

I'm hoping to get 2 full sets of Rainbows and unicorn/pegasus ponies so I can open a set and keep a set MIB. If one set of Rainbows shows more discoloration than the other I will probably debox the discolored set.

Has anyone seen any discoloring issues with the other 3 Rainbow ponies Windy, Skydancer and Sunlight?

All bilingual packaging I've seen has the heart (including the ones on ebay). Instead of three dots in the middle of the plastic to smell them, it's ten dots arranged to look like a heart.

So far, I have not noticed discoloration with Windy, Skydancer, or Sunlight. It's odd to see a new retro pony can start to yellow, while many of my childhood 80's ponies are fine. At least it's only this set.

I really hope the line is selling well enough that it will continue--ponies sell well here and even typical flawed ones get bought (except one Parasol who is the worst of all I've seen) and I buy so many due to buying 2 of each, and I buy them as gifts. I have a friend who doesn't collect ponies, but had them as a child and wants retro ponies, but still has not seen even one pony (not even a collectors pony!) despite checking multiple Targets. I would have thought ponies being returned happens mainly with ebay sellers who buy tons of ponies specifically to sell at a much higher price, but then the pony becomes more common and doesn't sell like that anymore. I have never returned a pony (even as a kid when someone gifted me the same pony I already had I kept that one too because I love twins). Even if I were to buy more due to yellowing (which may be futile anyhow since this can happen to that one too), I'd just be enjoying having duplicates, or sell/trade to collectors who want them, or gift them to others who want them. I'm attached to my opened retro rainbow ponies, even though a couple have some yellowing--they were a gift and they are staying with me for life.  :)

My Sunlight is fine. I'm not going to return them, because I love them and its been too long anyways, but perhaps hinting to BF that there are problems because of the scenting could hopefully keep other sets from sharing similar issues.

There always has to be something doesn't there?

I just got my 5 pack from Amazon, so far aside from a few tiny spots that aren't that noticable and some glitter explosions, my ponies don't seem too bad, but I also haven't taken them out of the box to look at the other side, yet. I'm kinda afraid to.  :yikes:
