Title: Best Identification Website?
Post by: SquarePeg on September 12, 2017, 10:15:34 AM
I've been inactive in the community for a while, I'm about to sell of the va-ha-haaaaast majority of my collection and imagine my distress upon discovering that Dream Valley is no more!  What?!  When did this happen?!

So I'm looking for a decent identification website and suggestions would be very welcome.

Seriously though, Dream Valley

Hi SquarePeg, nice to have you here  :) I am not sure what types of ponies you are wanting to identify - G1, G2, G3 etc?

I suppose everyone has their own favourite ways to identify ponies and different websites are better for different generations. As I collect G1 and G3 ponies, I tend to look for sites that are informative on them. I like to use Strawberry Reef personally as they have a colour based section, which I feel makes it easy to look for an unknown pony:
http://www.strawberryreef.com/Index/G1/G1index.html  however, I am told it is not up to date with the more recent ponies and there are better sites for that.

There is also My Little Wiki
http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/G1_ID_Machine

Taffeta has a website as well (http://www.etherella.com/scrapbook/), and there is the Nirvana section of the gallery here.

I hope this helps, good luck with identifying your ponies  :)

My favorite is MLP Land (http://mlpland.com/?l=2&p=zoeken) because you can just type in what the symbol looks like to find an ID. Sometimes the tags are a little odd and not what I'd personally use so it can be hard to find certain ponies, but I just use other sites for those ponies.

The best answer to this question is to use a range of websites. That way you cover the blind spots that one site might have and get a range of information which means you'll probably be more accurate at the end of the day. I don't think it makes sense to just use one site. There are several there so use them all.

It also has to be said that too much dependency on DV, which was a great site in its day but which had not updated or evolved to keep up with the expanding knowledge of the pony community (to the point that it even contained misinformation about US pony accessories) is not a good thing. I think DV should be loved and respected, but it is also the past. It's a lot better to use websites that are regularly updated and that the owner still has time to work on, or that other people are maintaining (like the wiki) because then any changes are also being included.

I miss DV too :( It's always sad when a site goes under.

Here's a list of ID sites I posted on another thread a while back :) I agree w/ everyone, using and cross-referencing between several different sites tends to work best for me.

All gens:
My Little Wiki (http://mylittlewiki.org/)
MLP Land (http://mlpland.com/?l=2) (I particularly love their ID feature)

G1:
My Little Pony Scrapbook (http://www.etherella.com/scrapbook/) (esp. for UK releases)
Our very own Nirvana Gallery (http://mlparena.com/archive/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=20319) and well, the Arena in general really XD

G2:
Rainbow Forest (http://gen2.aien-hime.com/)
Lavender Lagoon (http://lavenderlagoon.weebly.com/)

G3/G3.5:
Strawberry Reef (http://www.strawberryreef.com/) (also has other gens but is particularly good for G3/G3.5; no longer updated, but mostly accurate up to ~2015, AFAIK)

G4:
MLP Merch (http://www.mlpmerch.com) (*the* best source for G4 info, hands down)

Hope this helps :) Good luck IDing everything!

Seconding Ponyland Press. I found it amazing for ID'ing the petites in particular!

Personally, I only need to identify G1s :) I use the My Little Wiki's page with symbols organized by theme and sometimes I use the one with symbols organized by body color. I third Ponyland Press, I use it for petites too

I'm so happy to see MLP Land still up and running. it's one of my favourites :lovey:

Can't you still get DV through wayback machine? (sorry, I don't know how it works, but people managed to dig that up before!)

You can! But I don't know if every page is there or if every image works. If there's something anyone really misses from DV though its worth a shot.

Thanks so much for the feedback guys, I have a whole box full of ponies that need identifying and your help has made that a lot less daunting!

I have to admit, my dismay at finding Dream Valley gone was as much about sentimentality as convenience; that was the website that helped me identify the ponies I had when I was a teenager and was kind of the gateway into the online pony community for me.

RIP Dream Valley.

I know exactly how you feel, I started my pony "career" through DV as well and have spent many hours clicking through the ID machine - sometimes even without any pony to ID ^^'
I think you could probably post ponies here for people to ID, too. I know I love doing that stuff :lovey:

If someone has the wayback link to DV maybe they could post? I'd love a click through pony memory lane ^^'

Don't forget the MLParena nirvana gallery ^.^

http://mlparena.com/archive/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=20319

It shows almost all country variants, with the exception of a few super rare ponies.

Love pkw xxx
