I just got a Posey softie and she's really hard and I was wondering if anyone else had this issue and if anyone was brave enough to cut them open and find out what's inside

I honestly have no idea. You have these nifty things where you can open a seam and see the inside and resew it afterwards. No idea what they are called tho 😅

I don't know what it is, but it is SOLID. It's got to be some ancient form of poly-fit though it has the consistency of those cotton batting sheets you put in quilts.

Grinding my gears for when I restored that Lickety Split a few months ago.
I can tell you the feet are lined with a thick cardboard type of material... Lickety Split's was blue cardboard. The hairline was a cotton type material, yes, very very dense.

Kapok is dense and used in upholstery but it fell out of fashion in the 50s. Perhaps just very well-stuffed polyester? They're putting less and less Polyester in toys to save money, so it's possible that they just went all out back then.

I don't know what's in them, but they're all very hard like that. To be honest I don't think they're great stuffed toys for that reason. I had plenty of soft, slightly squishy stuffed toys in the 80s so I don't get why MLP ended up like that.

The Starshine that I just bought to restore is the same, which surprised me at first because I didn't realize they weren't squishy soft. But it grew on me and because her fur is still thick, she's huggable as long as I'm gentle.
My best guess as to why they are so firm is so they can hold their classic shape and be sturdy enough to stand like a plastic pony.
That said, I'd still like a G1-esque pony plush that is squishy soft. Does anyone know of any pony people who do custom plushes? I really need a huggable Star Hopper!

How do you get her open? I cant see the seams

On mine I can see seams at the back of the legs, on the face, and down the spine. The easiest place to examine would probably be the spine seam, as the threads on mine are a bit loose due to play wear. Alternatively, if you wanted to give it new hair, you could take an exacto and slice open the seam along the mane, which might be easier than trying to find stitches in the thick fur. Just be ready to add new hair in case the old hair isn't secured well, and stitch it back up after. I've done this with a couple plushes, and its kind of neat to see what's inside! With most modern plushes, its just some sort of pillow fluff. With beanie babies, its fluff in the head, and a belly full of microbeads.
There's a couple spots on mine where the fur has worn thinner, and I can see the mesh-like material the fur is rooted into. I haven't opened her up yet all the way to see the stuffing inside. It sure does remind me of a giant So Soft pony, I wonder if they've got something more solid inside that's just covered in floofy fur.

The fur on mine is like new almost so it's really hard to see the stitching, since there's no way I'm giving her away ever, I want to testify her to make her actually pleasant to hug and cuddle.

If you want to open her up and replace the insides, the best place I'd guess to go in would still be the spine, and maybe the line where the mane is inserted can help you find the stitches? Once you get a few stitches cut, it should be easier to follow the thread down the back.
I'm not sure what's inside there, though, or how removable it is. Maybe buy a test softie that's in shabby enough condition that you feel okay to experiment with it?
