Title: What food do you refuse to eat?
Post by: Loa on December 17, 2020, 09:41:30 PM
Mushrooms. They are the evil. EXCEPT, I do enjoy Japanese needle mushrooms!
Also, baked avocado is  :X, but raw is fine, and conversely, raw courgette is :X but cooked is delicious!

What about you?

Mushrooms I can’t eat them, sweet potatoes I was okay with them but now I can’t eat them because they go right through me, turkey same with the Sweet potatoes. Citrus things I’m allergic too.

Quiche. I absolutely cannot stomach quiche; every time I've had it, it's made me ill. Raw tomatoes put me off as well because of the fleshy texture, but I enjoy a lot of things involving tomatoes, such as soups, sauces and pizza. Oh, and grapes as well. Raisins, I can go for with gusto but grapes are the stuff of nightmares!

Foods that I've hated as long as I can remember and will never pass my lips:
Raisins. Scrambled eggs. Onions. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on wonder bread (or any bread, but soggy white bread is especially gross).

Foods that I very much dislike and will avoid, but will eat if it's prepared a certain way or disguised in a way that I don't have to taste it:
Mayonnaise (for example, mixed into a cake recipe)
Chicken (breaded/seasoned/dipped in sauce=tolerable, unseasoned and chunked up in casserole =not.)
Sausage (breakfast sausage is okay, sausage on pizza is not)

Due to my extremely sensitive gag reflex, I can not eat much of anything. It would be easier for me to say what I do not refuse to eat. lol

With that said, I can list some of the worst of the worst:
Mushrooms
Spinach
Chicken pot pie
Salisbury steak

Mushrooms for me, too, although I can eat them if well disguised or if I want to be polite and eat what's offered. XD I hate their taste, smell, and texture but if at least one of these is made more tolerable, it'll be easier for me. For instance, a pureed soup --> the taste and smell are still there but the slimy texture is gone. A small amount, chopped really fine, I can handle on a pizza or in a wok or something --> the taste is not noticeable and I can tolerate the texture if chopped finely enough and I can eat them with other veggies. It also depends on the type of mushroom, for instance champignons have a mild taste but gross texture. Chanterelles have a better texture but they have a strong, yucky taste and smell. Etc.

I also dislike quorn - I can eat it but it has a distinct flavour I don't like (strangely, not mushroomy, but I still don't like it). Same with tempeh, although I've only tried it once. Maybe I should give tempeh a second chance.

Gross meat products. I mostly cook and choose vegetarian food these days anyway but I'll still have meat every now and then, especially when someone else prepares it. But even as a child I was picky, I'd only eat the most homogenous parts of meat, meaning parts without visible fat or any stringy bits. I preferred chicken breast to thighs/legs, etc. And I absolutely wouldn't touch liver, kidneys, tongue etc. Yuck. Actually, mainly sticking to vegetarian/pescatarian diet means I don't need to explain myself and my picky eating habits anymore. It's an added bonus. :D

I like fish, some crustaceans, and scallops, but most other seafood I refuse to eat. Mussels & oysters are like mushrooms - even the idea is off-putting.

Mint jelly! Eww eww eww. I like lamb meat well enough (though see above) but I'd pair it with something other than mint, and mint jelly is probably the most horrible thing you can do with mint. I'm not a fan of jelly anyway, and marmalade and gummy candy are some of my least favourite types of sweets. Marmalade on toast is great, though, I have no problems with that, or jam. :D

Apart from these it's hard to think of foods I outright refuse to eat. With veggies I have many preferences (prefer cooked courgettes and bell peppers to raw ones, not a huge fan of parsnip or celery, etc.) but I'm pretty open to trying new things. I used to hate broccoli and brussel sprouts but now I love both, haha. Overcooked and limp is not an ideal way to serve them, though! ;) I'm not a fan of raisins or other dried fruits either but I do eat them, and nowadays I even like dried dates, for example. Cooked or soaked raisins are pretty gross, though! As a child I always picked them out of any baked products that had them. Now I'd eat them but wouldn't take pleasure in it. :D If I bake something myself I'll just leave them out.

There is a ton of food I refuse to eat, but more so because I don't like the taste of it, but if I was hungry enough I'll eat it. (Pizza is on this list).

But as for food I'd have a physical reaction to.... anything cooked with green bell peppers, and plain mayo.

Jelly. Wibbly-wobbly hell

Marshmallows. Sickly sweet gooey yeuch

Powdered custard. Lumpy school lunch nightmare fuel

Marzipan. Just TERRIBLE, & usually found lurking in a cake

Sultanas, & anything derived thereof including mince pies (dried fruit version), cakes of dried fruit & Christmas Pudding. Cakes are meant to be sweet & yum, not that yeuch-ness. I can tolerate raisins, but not sultanas

Chewy sweets like Chewits (may be renamed). Ate one & it made me vomit. I also dislike bubble gum

Anything strawberry-flavoured, except actual strawberries. God, or nature, or whatever you call the higher power, is better at flavouring strawberries than humans. I will NEVER touch strawberry jam, strawberry trifle, strawberry milkshake, or strawberry ice cream

I also tried a lychee once & found it very unappealing.

Gluten, quite simple as I have Coeliac Disease.

I will not eat shell fish like winkles etc or snails (was offered those as they were the only gluten free thing on the menu)

I am very fussy about mushrooms and tomatoes.

Love pkw xxx

Another vote for mushrooms. They're fungus and fungus is supposed to eat you, not the other way around.

Turnips. Ugh! I have tried them too many times and I always hate them.

Mustard greens. They have a weird spicy flavor I'm not fond of.

Cranberries. Bitter! My mom calls them tart. No, they're bitter.

Meat.

Most fish but for environmental reasons rather than taste. I try to stick to tilapia (it's invasive) or American farmed catfish. But I love salmon and keep a close watch on when it's okay to eat them.

Well I’m going to go ahead and out myself as a mushroom lover here! :P It kinda depends on how they are prepared for me, but I’ve liked most varieties I’ve had so far. I need to learn how my dad cooks them. He sautés them in some sort of red wine sauce and it’s so yummy! They make a great snack or side dish.

For me disliking a food comes more from texture than anything. Potatoes are a big one for me. In thin sliced French fry form they are fine because I don’t get as much of that texture, but any other form? That’s a no go for me. Even those thick cut steak fries or whatever they are called will make me gag. Avocado is another iffy one for me. I like guacamole, but just straight avocado slices gross me out a little.

A lot of condiments are also really gross to me. I will NOT touch anything that has been touched by sour cream or mustard. I can not stand those! I not really a fan of mayonaise either but....I’ve eaten some sandwiches that unknown to me had mayo and I mostly enjoyed them, so I guess I don’t hate it as much as I think! Just don’t put enough on there for me to notice it’s there and I will eat it. :P

I’m also starting to notice dairy really bothers my stomach, so I have to be careful around milkshakes and ice cream. There’s a local dairy here that makes a REALLY good root beer milk, and it’s so hard for me to not over do it! Luckily there are lots of dairy alternatives out there though! :)

Green beans they're gross
Tuna don't like the way it tastes or smells
Bell peppers I have legitimate issues with them and they're so bitter
Caviar I tried it once and never again
Balut half-formed duck embryo sounds really nasty
Any recipe with bugs as an ingredient. Why would anyone put that in their mouth?!?

There are a few things that I don't like to eat.

Peas-I have never liked peas.  The only ones I can eat on rare occasions are black eyed peas.

Brussel sprouts-I do not like these either.

I still live with my parents and if my mom makes peas or Brussel sprouts I have to eat a small amount of these.   :X

Tomatoes- I like things made out of tomatoes but not raw tomatoes.

Beans- Sometimes my parents will forget that I don't like them and serve just them for a meal.

Chili-I have to be in the mood for chili and then I only like certain kinds.

Awww I love mushrooms!

As a child I hated many foods that I now love such as raw tomatoes, fish and spicy food. One thing that I haven't grown to love is animal liver (animal liver sauce used to be popular in my area). I have tried it a thousand times and every time I am convinced that people who can eat it are nuts!

I'm with you on that one...organ meat of any kind makes me gag. My mom used to fry liver and mushrooms for herself when I was a kid because she had low iron, and my sister and I would bury our faces in the couch pillows so we wouldn't have to smell the foul miasma wafting from the kitchen. I claimed I hated mushrooms too, because I associated them with the liver stench. Turns out as an adult, I love mushrooms! (Except for canned ones because of slimy texture.) I have given liver a try or 2 as an adult in the hopes that my taste buds have matured enough to like it, but....not a chance. :yucky:

I love mushrooms and make great things with them.
I also love spicy food! ;)

Raw tomatoes... Apparently some people have/don't have a certain...salivary enzyme? and this makes raw tomatoes taste like poison to them.  I assume that's my situation since no matter how juicy and red and delicious they look, as soon as I put it in my mouth I'm so grossed out!  Cooking makes the enzyme situation no longer applicable, so I will eat tomato soup, pasta with tomato sauce, ketchup, etc with gusto.

That's about the only thing I absolutely will not eat, even to be polite.

Oohhh this is me as well! I feel jealous of people who grow their own tomatoes, and eat them fresh. It seems like such a refreshing snack. Tomatoes have to be cooked for me to be ok with them.

This reminds me, blackberries taste like "poison" to me -- it doesn't taste like a fruit. (This is how I describe it to others, I'm not really sure how poison tastes). But it's so odd because I like berries in general-- especially black and red raspberries of multiple varieties... but blackberries, especially store bought ones? I can't eat them, I will spit them out. >_<;

The backyard blackberries I had growing up as a kid weren't completely awful... so it must be certain varieties I cannot stand.

I absolutely LOVE mushrooms funny enough.
But for awful, worst of the worst, it would have to be wasabi. Can't even stand the smell. The sushi I buy is packed with wasabi and I can't even eat the ones near it because it picks up that flavor.
I also HATE mustard and don't care for yogurt.

Oh definitely that, too. However I didn't think about it because we don't eat bugs in my culture. I can not imagine it. I can't even stand when a bug touches me. Putting one in my mouth would be...  :X And that's if I didn't pass out first. lol

I absolutely ADORE Mushrooms!!! Pasta in a mushroom & cream sauce would be a thing I ate until it came out of my ears!!!

Also to note: things I forgot
Mushy peas. I like fresh or frozen peas, & I like pea soup, but not something which doesn't know what it wants to be...
Smoothies. I don't get them. Tried one once & it was like having a cold, sweet soup. Confused me...
Tannin, or anything containing it, including red wines & teas. I don't get on with tannin.
Also I'm a vegetarian, so meat, fish & anything else dead (bugs too) is a big nope. No longer keen on the results of my eating mayonnaise either.

LOL at all the mushroom hate. I love mushrooms, but my sister despises them. It makes for some good banter anyway.

Random aside - once sat on a train where some people were genuinely debating whether a mushroom was the same as a human because it wasn't an animal or really a plant. It was the funniest discussion I have ever overheard on a train, because it was in deadly earnest. Classic.

...I was a really picky eater as a kid, but not so much now. There are some things I don't like but very few things I actively won't eat (at least based on what is available here/comes into our home).

I no longer eat yogurt or stewed apple having been bombarded with both far too much in the past. But that's a 'bored with it beyond tears' thing.

My pet hates are usually around texture and/or smell. So if a cheese is too ripe, nope. I won't eat anything past its date, either, even though some things are fine past the date (best before not use by).

But my real bugbears are squishy and soggy. I cannot bear squishy fruit or veg (either overcooked or bruised) or soggy bread/cake/biscuit/cereal products. Nope, no milk or juice on cereal, no bread dips in soup!

For this reason my food nemesis is probably trifle. Its existence and composition entirely horrifies me.

ETA - oh yeah. Wasabi is horrible. Sorry Japan, it just is.
(So is red bean paste, frankly. As well as another texture fail, it's just too sweet.).
And I almost forgot, but natto. Natto should be illegal. Thank goodness it hasn't caught on in the UK.

Meat and most seafood. I have to force myself to eat a bit of fish now and then but all sorts of animal parts are just disgusting to me.
I used to cook chicken for my dog and the smell would almost make me puke, so weirdly rotten and stale. Chicken and fish smell are the worst to me.

Also hate the jelly-like insides of cucumbers and tomatoes. I have to remove the seeds before eating or else I'll throw up.

Boiled eggs are problematic, too. I have no issue with scrambled but boiled has that gross smell and jelly consistency I hate.

I'm otherwise not a picky eater but these are just yuck.

Post Merge: December 19, 2020, 07:54:53 PM

cilantro(unless it is a little bit on top of a soup or something)

Apparently cilantro is also one of those foods that tastes horrific to some people. Mostly compared to soap. I have family members that can't eat anything cilantro has been on, they always complain about a soapy taste.
I personally don't have that issue, it's a thing you are either born with or not.

Mushrooms are actually one of the only “healthy” foods I like, lol. XD Mmm, fungus.

Besides meat (I’m a vegetarian), I absolutely will not touch cabbage or asparagus with a ten-foot pole. They smell too icky to even look at. <_< Also, cooked eggs that aren’t cleverly hidden in cookie dough or some such. Again, the smell is... just no. When I was trying to eat more protein, I actually pasteurized and swallowed raw eggs, just to avoid the smell and taste. :X I gulped them down without even breaking the yolks, for fear of unleashing the ghastly sulfur smell.

I thought of a few more.

Guacamole-when this comes as a side I always give it to me dad to eat.

Poi-I tried this when I went to Hawaii and it was not good.

Pico de gallo- It has tomatoes and cilantro in it.

I have never actually eaten octopus or squid but I can't stand the thought of eating them.  I have seen octopus on buffets a couple of times and it didn't make it any more appetizing.

I like bugs! At one point me and my dad were thinking of opening a bug-themed food truck, but we pretty quickly realized that it would never make money so we gave up on that idea.

I'll eat most things but the one thing I physically can't eat is black licorice. Even just the smell gives me a horrible headache, I don't know what it is. And forget about actually eating the stuff. >_<

Guacamole-when this comes as a side I always give it to me dad to eat.

Oh, and this too. I love all the stuff that goes into guacamole, but refuse to eat guacamole itself. I wonder why.

I like octopus :)
Squid is more chewy, less keen since my teeth are not the best on the planet thanks to my soft enamel. It also doesn't seem to be as flavoured.

But octopus? Octopus is fine. Though mysteriously purple in places when you see it in the store.

Also a downvote here for liquorice (always hated that as a kid) and anniseed...and coconut while I think about it. Either the fruit or the flavour. And vanilla! Oh dear, can't even stand the smell - except ice cream.

I also love the ingredients of guacamole but not guacamole :/ Weird.

They're mainly kept for their meat. The reindeer of Lapland are not wild, they roam freely but they're still livestock, each animal is owned by someone. They have a gamey taste, a bit similar but not exactly the same as red deer venison.

I had no idea *so* many people hated mushrooms! :O
I'm obsessed with them lol! I could eat mushrooms all day, any way!

I'm a pretty adventurous eater, but it's weird because my problems with food almost always stem from textures, yet there are things like eggs & mushrooms & certain weird cheeses that have the most bizarre texture that even most people don't like, yet I love and will eat endlessly! xD

I'm pretty picky when it comes to meat. I've been getting slightly better with it, but it's still a weird territory for me.
But fish, shellfish, & poultry are always winners for me, I love those and never have a problem with them. (no muscles/oysters/clams/scallops etc for me though, no eel or octopus, no squid unless it's been fried into kalamari)
Also not into things like hearts/livers/etc.

I'm VERY picky with sweets, nothing too... "wiggly" or gummy.
People are always telling me what I shouldn't like then, like Swedish Fish, Sour Patch Kids, taffy, jellybeans, etc- but those are CHEWY! I love chewy. But it is not the same as gummy!
GUMMY, like gummy bears, worms, etc, are just awful, the texture makes me die inside lol. It's like they're fighting back while you're trying to chew them, there's so much resistance, it's a really creepy "mouth-feel" in my opinion. But chewy things are just soft, you bite into them and they just... accept that. XD I avoided fruit snacks if they were offered to me as a kid, because they were all labeled "gummies" but some were chewy and some were gummy, you never knew until you ate the first one.
Marshmallows are the same way, I want nothing to do with them unless they're in a rice crispy treat!
I don't even like chewing gum!
Whipped cream is also a big no.
NO to pie. All pie.
NO to meringue. (which sucks because I love the flavor of lemon meringue but the texture makes me gag)
No pudding!
NO jelly/jello. This is one of the worst ones for me.
No Twinkies or any of the similar treats.
Trying to think of more, but I think you get the gist. XD

Luckily I don't eat a lot of sweets so I don't have to be worried about being so picky with them. But when people start asking what I like, it ends up turning into them, in disbelief, listing off sweet after sweet going "YOU DON'T LIKE THAT!? WHAAAT" "Naah." "What about [sweet]?" "Naah." "YOU DON'T LIKE THAT!? WHAAAAAT!! What about-"

17 years beef free and stilk not missing it. Artificial sweetner is a no go. I haven't drank plain cow's milk in 15 years....

Goat milk and cheese....not because I don't want to but because I'm SUPER allergic! At least it's not something common like peanuts

I have a long list, I couldn't even list all the things I wouldn't eat. Two things seem popular that I find repulsive to the taste buds is carrots and bananas.

You must be a cat! :kitty:   (Bananas, citrus fruit and, oddly enough, carrots are some of the things my kitties run from...)

i'm not a very picky eater but i am picky about the way foods are prepared. i need to have the right sauces and condiments.

i don't like squash and zucchini. i've pretty much stopped eating pork. we keep talking about also cutting out beef. so that will probably happen soon too.
I also don't like peanut butter. the flavor is fine but its too sticky.

Raw tomatoes seems to be a popular one, and one I echo. I cannot STAND how slimy they are - the random seeds - blech. I do really enjoy tomato flavoured things though.

Pork, also. I cannot stand the taste, or the texture, or anything, about pork. I have eaten it out of politeness [someone once cooked me Ribs and forgot I didn't like pork, so I didn't remind them until afterwards. That was a painful meal but I was too awkward to say no ]

My biggest Thing in food that I hate is random crunches - it is enough to make me entirely lose my appetite. I'll try anything, and there are few flavours I have issues with, but if there is a crunch or a 'bit' in the food I am not expecting... that's me put off of the food for a Very long time.

That's interesting! I eat almost nothing, but I eat those, aside from the peanut butter cups. (But I would eat peanut butter cups if I wasn't allergic to peanut butter because they smell delicious.)

I'll eat almost anything but most seafood and seaweed. Shrimp is ok but that's it. Oh and anytime meat has those tough chewy bits I gag but I like the taste of it so it's a risk I take. I also recently discovered I don't like cold baked beans. Bean salad is one thing but baked beans need to be warm.

For me that would be peanut butter, bananas and seafood, I don't like any of it.  :pout:

Potatoes, (except certain fries/chips/crisps) Iv hated them my whole life, and my tolerance has only gotten worse lol. I hate mashed potatoes more than anything, everything about them is gross to me, the texture, the smell, the taste, the color? I dunno, never been a fan.

I also dont eat freshwater fish, also never been a fan of the taste, and i have tried very hard to get over that. Over the years I've basically entirely cut out all sea food.
I enjoy the taste of shellfish but its never been something I've craved, so it wasn't hard. If someone I know makes it and serves it to me, Ill eat it. But otherwise I just feel like our oceans are a mess and so is the industry around fishing/meat farms etc (i guess tbh i dont eat much meat period anymore either, not vegetarian though)
