At least I think this is Mandarin . . .

This is what Google Translate gave me:

I can't figure out what "Image Index" means. :P
-
What I think.
Maybe index means value? Since they all have that.
https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=%E6%8C%87%E6%95%B0
I'll add
指 https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=%E6%8C%87
数 https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=%E6%95%B0
形象 just means "image" when I put it into google. So... looks?
eta: a tried to quickly draw them. DX I'm not super familiar with chinese, so I hope I got the right characters
-
Yeah, I was wondering if it meant looks or beauty in this context. Or popularity, like "public image"?
The star scale is weird too, because it's inconsistent . . . Like Lofty has two stars out of three for Leadership but Wind Whistler has four stars out of five. So why don't they all have a five-star scale for Leadership and the other stats . . .
My only theory is that they thought little kids would get upset if a pony had too low of a stat?? So they softened the blow by changing the scale? So far I haven't seen any ponies with more than one "empty star" for a stat.
-
This is so cool - what's it from?
-
It's traditional characters but probably Mandarin.
I can read some Chinese because of Japanese but I won't pretend it's better than google translate.
This is entirely based on my Japanese knowledge of the characters and doesn't account for nuances that may be different in Chinese...
2. Courage Index
3.Knowledge Index (wisdom probably works too with that first character but again I don't know the Chinese word)
4. Appearance index
I have some problem with the first one.
So again just from a japanese point of view, 形 is something like form or shape or something like that. 象 on its own is an elephant (lol!) but in a compound that is often used with words to do with appearance or image. So I'm gonna go with it being appearance.
I don't know where the 6 months is coming from.
-
It's from some books published in the G3 era, but the contents are screencaps of G1 MLP & Friends arranged into comics. I think they are licensed because at the end of the book there's a note like: "If you find someone producing illegal copies of these books, report them to us for a reward", lol. (Also because there's a section at the back advertising G3 toys.)
The covers are a blast:

There are 8 books total and each one has stats for one pony on the book jacket. So sadly we only have eight tech specs, but they do also have character rosters in the front of the book, which is fun. According to Google Translate, Gusty's name is now Weird Wind.
-
Now those ones definitely say Little Pony >.> But those are in SIMPLIFIED Chinese. So now I'm confused ;)
Can make out bits of the names of the titles on the covers, 7 definitely looks close to 'Bright Lights'. Second character definitely light.
Two of the books are also apparently available on amazon.com. If you search 小马驹 they come up. Pricey though.
..Are the uncoloured stars more like "half stars"? They look a bit gold on the one side, so are maybe half stars in the stat?? Rather than empty?
-
Thanks Taffeta! It would make sense if it's appearance!
Here's the interior flap of the Bright Lights book, apparently in 2007 some channel in China was running MLP & Friends.

Google Translate:

The last part is definitely describing the plot of Bright Lights.
I love that Google Translate correctly translated the Chinese character(s) for Hasbro, but mistranslated it in English.
Interior shot. The images are all REALLY crisp, I'm honestly surprised it was possible to get them in this quality.

Also thoughts. If there is a specific word, it seems like https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary does a better job at translating words then google.
You can use a drawing thing to convert to text.
https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary
https://www.purpleculture.net/chinese-handwriting-input/
XD Here is "image" used in a sentence.
https://www.purpleculture.net/dictionary-details?word=%E5%BD%A2%E8%B1%A1
Ohh.. here's the other one. 指数
https://www.purpleculture.net/sample-sentences/?word=%E6%8C%87%E6%95%B0
See the "glamour rating" one. 指数 is used as rating. However, don't ask me what a footie kit is.
-
Footie kit - football/soccer strip I imagine??
Edit - yeah, after clicking the link and looking at the phrase/the Chinese, it says football in there 足球, so that's what it means :)
(Maybe British slang though xD)
Rating makes sense to me too. The first character is to point something out and the other is to count something, but even in Japanese as a compound they mean 'index'. But context is a lot in stuff like this. I was thinking indicator...but rating sounds better.
I need to go back and stare at the first one again. I guess it is leadership, it’s just the second character bothering me...
...Yeah, it is leadership. It's just a weird way to write it from a Japanese perspective, but it's not Japanese xD
-
Thanks Banditpony! I'll have to check that out!
Two of the books are also apparently available on amazon.com. If you search 小马驹 they come up. Pricey though.
I ordered a couple extras on Taobao but they order hasn't been completed yet so we'll see if the seller actually has them . . . I have six of the eight so far. I was really happy when they turned out to be books because at first I thought they might be DVD covers.
Are the uncoloured stars more like "half stars"? They look a bit gold on the one side, so are maybe half stars in the stat?? Rather than empty?
There's a faint gold outline in the interior of the "empty" stars, but no half stars, if that makes sense.
If anyone has ever disliked Whizzer's beanie hat symbol, now you can just go by Chinese book canon and say they're persimmons.

LMAO these are so weird, amazing and hilarious. Thanks so much for sharing! I'd love to see more images of these if you're up for it, I've never seen these anywhere before!
You just found them on Taobao?
"A light pink foal with three on its ass." lmao that translation is just so amazing.
("Three what?" "Idk... three." lol)
Also I love how ironically they specifically mention her twinkle eyes, but that is like the only art I've seen of Whizzer with normal eyes!
& Gusty as "Weird Wind." XD
-
To be fair to the Chinese, that one's on Google translate :) The original says "On her rump are three persimmons." (Literally - Rump-on-are-three-of-persimmon).
That's about the extent of my Chinese though xD. I can read the first sentence but the second is a bit more mysterious. I see the character for pretty, and it ends with something about strong power, but that's about it :)
Her name uses the characters for brain and hand, but "Expert" seems pretty good as a translation? They use the hand character in Japanese to mean a skill, so brain skill = expert?
Edit: ooh now I see the character for eye in there <3 So I guess that is a bit ironic ;)

Yeah, I was trying to think of phrases I hadn't tried before (to find interesting fakies) and I put in "colt anime" (translated into Chinese) and the one with the Friends hair Posey came up. XD
Here's Wind Whistler's tech specs:

Only two stars in Appearance, SICK BURN. :P
Wait until I take pics of the back cover, it has laudatory quotes like it's a NYT Best Seller or something.
-
That's so interesting! I did recently see a Chinese G1 book on eBay and I'm kinda dying for it but the price was a bit steep - it looked like it was from the 90s though and I wondered where on earth it might have come from/its story. Never seen these G3 hybrid books before!
-
Did they look like this, skyline?
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
I used to have the whole set of those but I sold them. They're from 1994 and they have drawings the are definitely traced from MLP & Friends (pretty roughly). I don't think they were licensed and I wonder how they got the images to trace--just screenshots taken from a computer playing the DVD, or--?? Did it even have DVDs yet?
Also for some reason they decided the symbols weren't important and just left them off in 99% of the drawings, lol.
-
What's interesting too is they have completely different names for the pony line.
The G3 era books you've been posting all say "Little Pony" (3 characters are small, horse and pony), which is what Google translated as little foal...)
But that older one says My Little Pony & Friends (Wo de xiao ma he peng you men...I think? With some accent tone things).
So they're completely different production things IMO. Even though they're both circling the old MLP stuff.

That's the one! So cool!
-
ooh, these are weird and cool! I love oddities like this.
The cover art is gorgeous *w*
-
These are so awesome! I have the three 90s books (they were published in 1994, by the way). I don't know any Chinese at all but they are lovely to look at. Now I'm thinking I might need to track down these G3 era books as well....
I'm obsessed with foreign pony names so it's fun seeing what they're called in Chinese. Weird Wind . It's interesting that the names are translated and not just phonetic renderings of the English.
-
That is hilarious!

The dust jacket quotes, as promised. Like, I just feel "Cute pony stories your kids will like" + pictures of ponies would have been sufficient. :P
-
well, of course, MLP is the gospel for children!
-
I had a sudden revelation . . . I think the reason Whizzer got renamed to "Expert" is they didn't really understand that her name, in context, is a reference to "whizzing around" (spinning like the propeller on the propeller beanie) and "fast".
I think they interpreted it as being based on "whiz", as in "that kid's a real whiz" or "she's a computer whiz." Meaning a smart person, maybe a bit of a nerd or a specialist. Smart person . . . EXPERT! The perfect name! :P
So here's another pony whose translated name is interesting . . .

Google Translate will alter the translation depending on the angle you hold your phone and sometimes they would translate her name as "Weird Wind", but it REALLY preferred "Weird Style" or "Weird One." :P
-
" Gusty the weirdo, likes to criticize others. "
-
Again I'm going from Japanese, but I'm guessing that the translation shifts because the third character is this character...
風
It's the simplified Chinese version on the book, so it looks a little different, but I guess the meaning is the same.
In Japanese this is the character for wind (kaze) but it's also used to mean 'style' of something (so Japanese food is wafuu, western style clothing is youfuu...etc.)
So the translator is giving you both versions.
I would assume given Gusty's theme that 'Wind' is probably the right one here.
In Japanese the first character means "old" and the second one means...something like...mystical or spooky or...it's the first character in Japanese from the word kaibutsu (monster), but it also has the sense of spiritual or magical or whatever.
Apparently in Chinese those two things put together = eccentric? According to online dictionaries anyway?
So her name is Gǔguàifēng. And I'm gonna go with the option of "Weird Wind" xD. It's nicely alliterated.
But I still love how weirdness is associated somehow in Chinese with old >.>.

Surprise, Woebegone and all the others on the covers.... MAJOR WANT!!
