Title: Who is the most expensive pony in the World?
Post by: Starflashbaby on December 15, 2018, 09:20:46 PM
Hello fellow ponies,
I have a question I'm going threw my inventory again on excel, and I dont know how much mint in bag Baybreeze is... does anyone know what Ebay prices go to for her or how much she is worth?
They only made 300 of her.
I also have one random question....
What is the most expensive pony in the world?
Thanks

No idea how much Baybreeze goes for, but the most expensive pony... Not including unreleased prototypes, I'd guess Takara ponies?

Aren't the Greeks and South Africans super pricey? I've seen Baby Bluebelle go for $1,000.00

I would think it's one of the OOAK ponies, but to be frank, only because someone was willing to pay that amount for them. And as there's only one of them, it's hard to form a price consensus. I don't know any specifics but it has been said that someone has paid $10,000 for a pony before now.

I've seen similar crazy prices for Jem prototypes but I can't imagine spending that amount of money on a pony. Not even a OOAK one. If you have the money and it makes you happy, I would never judge you or say you shouldn't - but I just couldn't do it ><.

I also believe that it's probably a pony that's OOAK and/or prototype.

I thought it was that Greek Ladybird pony that comes in the red egg that was considered to be the most valuable?

I know of a few Greek ponies, south African and Nirvana ooaks sell for $4000 + each. Most of the auctions for these types of ponies are silent and public doesn't get to see the final prices (I personally knew the buyers or sellers to know the final price).

Nirvana's and takara sell for way more than any UK/ us release

Depends if you're talking about mass produced ponies or prototypes IMO.  Of mass produced ponies, probably the Takaras or Ladybird?

I definitely agree!  The mass produced ponies are ~$1000-$5000.  The prototypes surpass that and as nhal039 said, with private sales, we have no way of knowing what the market will bear...

Even through I was surprised how much I saw Ladybird on ebay the other day, she wasn't as much as I remember her going for.

are takara ponies a fakie?
is there any guess for baybreeze? since there are only 300 of her made does that make her the holy grail for ponies?
OOAK ponies.... is that customs or are you talking about the charity ones?
I have an "Wahlburgers Fan" custom made by my friend here on the arena. :D
I can't legally sell it to make profit. but I'm glad I have her.

Nope, they're official ponies that the Japanese toy company Takara released in Japan, licensed by Hasbro with the My Little Pony name in the 80's. They didn't sell very well, so now they're really hard to find and go for at least $1,000, usually a little more than that.

OOAK in this case isn't custom ponies.   It's ponies found that maybe were prototypes or the factory did a boo boo like Reverse Gusty where her mane is red with a green stripe instead of green with red stripe.    Or a pony where maybe there were others made but there are no known others that have been found or maybe just one other.   I'm thinking of the pink haired Argentina Gusty with gold leafs that appeared earlier in the year.

Bay Breeze might have been a very limited number but price also depends on how desirable she is.   G1 ponies seem to fetch much higher prices than any G2, G3 or G4 ponies.  So Bay Breeze doesn't have that in her favour being G3.

For regular production ponies I would have picked Greek Ladybird, Takaras and South African ponies.   They are all priced far out of my budgets but they aure are pretty.  I'd love to have a South African.
Title: Re: Who is the most expensive pony in the World?
Post by: Taffeta on December 18, 2018, 03:43:02 AM
Reverse Gusty isn't a OOAK (one of a kind) pony, but she';s dogged by problems from all the fakes that have been made. I think there are three or four which have the paper trail to prove that they aren't fakes, or customs, but yeah. It's a bit of a minefield with that one honestly. And I still have some latent scepticism about what their intention was.

Ladybird used to sell for insane prices but I have seen her more cheaply since then. There are some really rare Greeks I think that are one or two known ponies out there. But I don't know what their current going rate is.

Even one of a kind or potential prototype or sample ponies aren't guaranteed to sell for stupid amounts, though. It depends a lot on the buyer and the interest as well as the pony...and how well it can be authenticated.

It's really hard as well with all the (understandably) secret transactions to really estimate.

I don't understand why people spend silly money on damaged South African ponies, but I've seen a couple of really wrecked ones sell for thousands.

Wow I just looked up takara ponies on Google they are cute!
Ladybird is coming down in price that's cool but sad at the same time. Yeah the only way I will be able to get her is finding her in a thrift store lol. Yup good luck with that... I tell myself lol
Thanks for all your responses! I know more now and now I can finally answer my cousin's question. Thanks again.

I'd say G1 prototypes, takaras and south africans. Do south africans even ever sell for under a 1000 dollars? And they just might be even more limited in production than Takara ponies.
Ladybird and Birthday are nowadays far far from priciest and many other nirvanas stand at the same price range. From US ponies mail order Rapunzel is the most valuable, going for around 600-900 dollars.

Any OOAK owned by someone who will never sell = effectively priceless.
A better question would be 'what are the highest prices a pony has been offered for sale at', since you can't reasonably put a replacement price on something of which there is only one in the world known to exist, and it's never been available for purchase.  Or better yet 'what is the highest price someone has been willing to pay for a pony'.  I mean I could offer up an OOAK for a billion dollars, but if nobody is willing to spend that much, is it worth that amount?

I was offered $1000 for Baby Susie once. I guess though Baby Sugarberry is right, a pony that is never for sale is essentially priceless, and therefore really difficult to value.

Wasn't there last summer an Ebay listing of four G1 prototypes (three teeny tiny babies and one glow and show or sparkle pony prototype) that sold for... 2500 or 4500 dollars or something like that?

There's a mint in package piggy pony on eBay right now with a price of around $7,400 Canadian dollars....  If that one sells I don't think I've seen one go that high before.

Hard telling, I mean its a hard subject to actually consider since anybody can give their price and make it out like its the real deal, especially on eBay. However, I can imagine really rare ponies mint in the box can go for a lot...

Hello again there is a greek baby pony for 5,000 something dollars.
So I'm still a little confused are Takara ponies part of the pony collection (japanese ponies) or they separate like fakies? Thanks in advance . It's sad that baybreeze inst as expensive as I thought she was I thought I saw her go for $300 for her at one point.... I'm not sure. Sorry for double posting. I didn't realize my post went through the other day.

Takaras are legitimate My Little Ponies - they were licensed out from Hasbro and developed specifically for the non-western markets they were sold in.  Definitely not fakies.

The ones made by Palau toys were sold in Spain.. they are made with a squishier plastic, and have poor paint jobs.

There's many makers of takara fakies-- and they've have shown up across the world, but palau toys and the lovely pets ones might be the only ones that showed up in packaging?

Yeah, the big Takara ponies are legit, but the babies.. there's more fakies of them than real ones! Real ones exist but they're rare as hen's teeth (rarer!). I think we've only found two legit babies so far?

In some cases the opposite, prices have gone up. Argentinian ponies used to be $20 a time MOC and greeks were also very cheap MOC in the early days. But not any more. On the flipside of that, Baby Applejack's first appearance on Ebay, she sold for $300 US, which in 1998ish was a lot of money. Now she's a lot less than that...

The market really fluctuates a lot.

How many g1 prototypes are known? That are confirmed to exist, not just from catalog pictures? I know of:
-BBE Sunlight
-Alt pose Sunnybunch
-Giant wax shy pose Bubbles
-Lavender My Pretty Pony
-That birthflower pony with purple hair, a yellow symbol and unpainted eyes
-The purple rainbow baby pony with pink, yellow, green and blue hair, and no symbol
-Collector pose Sundance (I know this one's controversial, but she looks real to me. Or was she proven fake? I haven't kept up)
-The painted U.K. school ponies
-The alt pose U.K. baby ponies

Any I'm missing?

-The alt pose U.K. baby ponies

As far as these are concerned (Susie and Billie), it's my personal opinion they were production samples sent out to Hasbro places for promotional events or reasons, not necessarily what I would call a prototype. I feel this is true for some others that get called prototypes as well but, so as to prevent being pilloried for semantics, I'm only highlighting these because one of them is mine ;)

It's my personal opinion that although Susie very closely resembles the pony in the hasbro catalogue for 1992 or 1993, she's minutely different, suggesting there may be more than one originally. Billie also is thought to exist in duplicate though we can't be 100% sure. So they are more likely production samples and not prototypes.

In the case of both my Susie and Lady G's Billie, we acquired them in unnoticed lots for cheap prices many years ago. I know Susie was around $21 because at the time most people didn't realise she was a different pose - UK ponies were just getting known about online. Neither have ever been up for sale properly labelled so what kind of value they would fetch is impossible to know - but although I believe there to have been more of them, no others seem to survive. Just in my opinion Susie is too well made and perfected in the process to be a prototype. She is basically a ready-for-sale model only in a different pose.

The resin Baby Explorer and the painted ponies, also experimental ponies like BBE Sunlight would be proper prototypes to me.

Sundance's provenance has not really been 100% proven tbh. But the subject tends to be controversial as there are people who make cases in favour and against her authenticity.

Mylittlewiki also has some collectors photo of a Cocoberry prototype. And wasn't there a baby Explorer prototype too? And I think someone on arena has a Takara prototype.

Right, I forgot about Sunspot! And wooooow, that Coco Berry is GORGEOUS! Such a shame her official release was downgraded to generic pastel blue and fading pink :\

There are also two of the original design "original six" ponies known.  The ones from the earlies advertisments, where all had cotton candys symbols.  Its Cotton Candy and, I belive the other was blue belle. I'm not sure if they fall under the prototype or production samples though.
