Title: does anybody LIKE bbe ponies?
Post by: orangepeachmango on March 19, 2017, 01:43:44 PM
i often hear around that its sort of a unanimous decision that BBEs are.. yucky looking. but honestly!!!! i think theyre really cute ... the rust makes them a little scary looking but like.. i don't know. something about the way they look i really like. i totally get that they look... wonky ... but i kind of think its endearing. what do you think?

I actually like them! But only if their eyes aren't rusty.   ;)
(Also- is your profile picture of Prince Sidon? I really like it!)

I love their poses and colors. They just set off a mild doll phobia I have. I'd love to have Baby Frosting, Baby Lofty, Baby Half-Note and Baby Ribbon. But I'd rather they be turned into TEs or regular eyed ponies. Maybe I need to see one in person?

I think they photograph badly. Somehow it always makes them look like they have creepy dark spaces under their eyes. But when I first saw one in person, I noticed that this was much less noticeable! They are pretty cute.

They aren't my absolute favorite ponies, and they might not be for everybody, but I don't think they deserve their bad rap. Their poses are nice. That said, when people do a good job de-BBE-ing them, they look nice too.

I'm indifferent to them. They seem out of place among other ponies, but that's about it.

At first I didnt like them but they grew on me like a mushroom. So as long as their eyes aren't too rusty I do not mind them. I think sleepy pie is the cutest BBE ever.

I don't really care for them but I did find a few at the thrift store this winter and they are much cuter in person.

I love them!  You can totally clean up that eye rust with laundry soap and toothbrush and a little bit of plastic toothpick work for stubborn parts.

They are the best eyes, so clear and three-dimensional and sweet, plus you can upgrade them too!  Check out the after pics of my horribly rusted Baby Ribbons!  I gave her some new eyelashes and eye shadow.

TEs upgrade nicely too, these 10mm Zirconia are much better in person than still pics.  You just can't do these kinds of things to painted eyes.

Thanks!  The three in your post can be derusted, no problem.  They're so cute!

Also, nothing's unanimous here.  Even though many don't like G3.5, for example, some of us really love them.

G2 love might be pretty close to unanimous here though, haha.

I agree that they really don't photograph well. While cruising EBay I've seen a few that had horrible eye rust that were truly scary!
When I finally got a nice BBE pony in my hands,  I thought it was much cuter in person. It's something under the eye area that looks weird to me.
Although, there's just something about the BBE baby Shady...that one gives me the heebie jeebies  :bolt:

@dragonlady your profile pic cracked me up!  :worshippy:

ME! I love BBEs, the horrible little monster fuel darhlings. I love them when they're all creepy and chewn up, rust colored, and ready to hunt for brains. I usually try to offer any that need a home for $1 a piece but then i'm shocked when people want to charge $5-7 for them when they themselves claim that 'no ones wants them" but if I ask about the $1 they get really upset and tell me thats ridiculous.

Honestly, after Paypal fees $1 is pretty much nothing. I can't really blame them for not offering such a huge discount. Most people would say no and its kind of rude to get upset people won't sell an item priced at $5-7 for $1.

My apologizes, I lacked details on my comment. I wouldn't ask someone online for such as I know paypal fees can be rough.

I am referring to a situation I experienced in person.

I met someone who had a bin of 28 BBEs, none of which they were selling, ans as they were complaining about never being able to get rid of them. They were literally standing right there talking to another person saying they had had them for years and never been able to get rid of them and that they hated them. I heard the conversation and thought I would make them an offer.

I offered to buy all of them for $1 a piece for a total of $28. The person got really upset and started yelling at me that these ponies were merchandise and there was no way they could go that low and how dare I ask that.

I still wonder if they ever sold them or not.

I love the little monsters and it always makes  me sad when people hate on them so I try to give them all loving homes. rust eyes, chew marks, hair cuts, all are welcome in my herd.

Same here. I grew up with them though as my cousin had two of them in her collection that we played with, Baby Cuddles and Baby Half Note. We pretended that they were siblings lol. They aren't my absolute favorite but the ones I like have a place in my collection. The only one I don't have is Sleepy Pie, she hasn't really grown on me. I do need an upgrade of Baby Shady. My childhood one has terrible regrind.

I'm a bit of a contrarian, so when people used to (not as much anymore!) have regular topics about how BBEs were so awful, I decided I HAD to love them! ;) I've also bought several eyeless BBEs on purpose, because I wanna see if putting nice-quality doll eyes in them would help them any! They're sort of pitiable, and I have much uglier ponies in my herd who I adore, so why NOT adore these little weirdos too, you know? :P

I had a BBE Heartthrob when I was a kid, and I thought she was a fakie. I also thought she looked really old instead of a baby so I just pretended she was the shriveled up old lady pony of my herd XD

Overall though, not a huge fan. I think the unicorn BBE's are a little bit cuter, but the others with gaping mouths just don't quite do it for me lol.

UrocyonFox, one of the first G1s I bought was a very rusty BBE from a guy on eBay who priced it something like $7 plus 5 shipping or some number like that, and when I asked for him to go lower at all, he got all offended like I poked him with a stick, so I said Whoa mister, calm down and I paid his stupid price.  Somehoe I liked it all rusted up in particular and had to have it...People are weird about selling value and seems especially true for BBEs, maybe they have mind control or something.

nessa16, G2 love :lovey:  not hate seems unanimous here.  I haven't noticed anyone who has stated they dislike them and if you want to ensure views on a brag post, just have some G2 in there....my point was that even though many people are very vocal about disliking things as though everyone hates them, every kind of pony has some admirers.

mlp4me I looove those customs!!  So cute! That turtle looks great and I think I saw the Milky Way before...I want a set just like that.

i think they photograph bad because their eyes have extra planes of dimension that catch shadows really bad and it gives them gross black lines around their eyes!!! i really want to get one in person because im sure they are a whole lot cuter in person.

I've always liked them. Rusty eyes aren't nice, but they aren't really that ugly. I may be biased, though, because baby Shady was given to me as a present by a very dear pony trading friend who has since passed away, and so I have a strong fondness for her and can't see her as ugly.

They're fine. There are more ugly ponies in my opinion. I think that the mostly the thing that puts people off is eye rust.

It's more the strange reaching poses I dislike than the eyes themselves. I dislike the eyelash sweetheart sister's more.

I kinda like the BBE pose but I agree, the eyelash princess are atrocious, especially, if their lashes are smooshed. I never thought I would think that about a G1 pony.

There are definitely people who like them.

Not me though, lol.  Their head sculpts are some of the worst in G1.  Their doll-eyes are completely round, and in order to make them 'fit' in a baby pony's head, they bugged out their eye sockets.  (Note that the BBE Sundance prototype does not have this issue since adult ponies have larger heads.)

The baby unicorn ponies have something weird about their mold that makes their hair go in a permanent mohawk half the time, and both they and the baby earth pony mold have bad sculpting on their legs and necks.  So it's not even "ew, rusty eyes".  They are just lousy molds IMO.  I feel like they were cranked out at the last minute.

The baby pegasus BBE mold is the best one (basically a copy of Heart Throb's mold), and would look pretty cute if it had normal eyes.

Edit:  Here's an example of the infamous "BBE unicorn mohawk".  I can't believe they didn't fix this before mass-releasing the BBEs.  The hair is SO determined to stay like that, too.  If anyone has any theories why the hair does that, I'd love to hear them.

again I think it was a good concept but not applied very well. Some of them are really cute but it always seemed weird that there were no adult bbe's.
maybe the baby eyes should have been a bit smaller? BBE baby eyes do look like they are bugging out a bit and this is not the case with adult bbe sunlight so I think her eyes were the correct size. Maybe the sockets on the babies were created to be to big?

They aren't all like that but BBBE Ribbons sure is.  It could be fixed with heat I suspect but instead I harnessed it to make pigtails (twintails).  That's the power of the Mohawk! I guess.  Nice baby Gusty there.  I think orangepeachmango might be right, the angle of the rooting or could just be a crazy curl in the hair or something.

I don't agree that the sculpt is just to fit the eyes though, I think there is enough room inside the head to have set them in deeper, I think the face is just shaped that way to more easily meet the sockets which happen to be made with radial symmetry...they could have been asymmetrical like the adult prototype above but it would have required both design and production perfection between the mold and the socket shape and of course symmetrical is easier and would have fewer rejects etc.

It kinda makes sense to me to just have the babies, in regular dolls it's more often in the baby style and I always assumed it's for mommy/baby kinda play etc, and the BBE eyes are already kinda beady, if they were any smaller they'd be pinheads.  The sockets could easily have been made thinner and they could have used nonferrous weights too (avoiding the rust problem in their future, and all could have avoided the iron tail washers), but all these things would have required a lot more resources.

While we're at it they needed better lashes too.  Now where did I park that time machine...

I took the eyes out of a BBE once because I wanted to make a custom baby Twinkle Eye . . . Basically, there are two round "cups" or "globes" on the inside of the BBE head (ugh, I'm explaining this so badly . . . imagine a sphere of hollow plastic, with the opening at the front of the baby's face where the eyes are) that the eyes rest in.  And yeah, you're right, they're pretty big!  But the visible part of their eye is smaller than on a "regular" baby pony, I think.  BBE adults probably wouldn't have looked so weird.

I think it would help if the eyes weren't glass.  It just looks really "uncanny valley" since all the other MLPs have painted eyes.  G3 Lily Lightly, who has blinking eyes, looks much better:

LMD, I think the word you are looking for is "socket" (as in sock-it-to-em).

Lily Lightly's blinking eyes are particularly cool becausae the eye stays put and a lid comes down when you push the button...a nice mechanical combo that also triggers her lights.

Obviously I switched mine over to pigtails and got rid of the rather worn out dress cuz it's covering up such a nice symbol.  Eventually, I'm gonna hook up those lights to LED hair tie baubles but haven't gotten around to it....

The self-closing eyes work because they have weights in the bottom, so the keep looking perpendicular to gravity so when the pony is laid down it happens to be closed...this is how regular doll closey-eyes work too.  While the separate eyelid of Ms. Lightly is totally cool (and done so much closer fitting than the G4 ones with separate eyelids btw), I'm not sure how you cold make that gravity-controlled without a lot of precision and/or pushrods etc that isn't practical in a few-dollar toy from the 80s.  Their weighted system is elegant engineering, and it's the scrimping on the precision of the socket design to make it more compact and look more like a face that's the whole problem.  It's more like a robot eye in appearance, messes up the whole shape of the face.  The eye itself is perfect, in my view, and I had a really close view of BBE Ribbons' eyes cuz trying to get the last bits of her old lashes off I ended up popping off her corneas (lenses) and de-rusting a Cuddles (I think's that's her with the bib symbol) that had lost so much iron that one eye is hard to make go more than half-mast I determined that if you were to remove the lashes, you could swing the eye all the way around to get to the weights...but I didn't, though I'd be tempted to do it next time I do a eyelash replacement to get rid of the iron.  Iron bad.

I think the eye globes themselves could be a bit bigger.  My favorite aspect is seeing through the cornea to the iris like a real eye...has depth, catches the light, is just so alive.  Too bad about the robot face though, bahh.

edit:  Argh, didn't know she came with shoes.  I gotta have me some of those shoes.

Here is a link to the inside of BBE sunlights Head. It has the two plastic solid spheres that you refer to the babies having only large scale.
Do the bbe babies eyes go this deep?

Bummer, theres no fixing that with fake people lashes...hm now i want to try.
I have successfully made an eyelash princess look just like a regular pony. Takes skillz. Someone has given her fake people lashes as well; it looked nice.

Um well I think Hasbro could have done more with them.
For instance the BBE sunlight prototype that I have I think is beautiful. Imagine her and a baby sunlight?

How cute would mommy and baby bbe sets have been?

It's their bulgy, blinky doll eyes though that forbid me from ever getting any.

With the sole exceptions of Teddy Ruxpin and Grubby. (Because they were awesome back then) I can't have blinky things in my room. They'd stare at me in the dark and come closer.

This fear was made worse by my best friend/roommate's Furby that, I kid you not, still worked after it's batteries were taken out. It would just sit there on the shelf blinking at you constantly. We both got seriously freaked out by the creepy little monster.

Law, so what I like about them is specifically what you don't like about them.

I wish I had a demon-possessed Furby...could save $ on batteries, you know in exchange for your soul of course.

Even with her batteries my Starlily doesn't do anything unless I initiate contact first.  No demon possession there.

I picked up a Furby just to see what they do but it had a lot of leaked battery damage and I haven't tried to clean it up and see if I can make it work...how old does it need to be?

I keep thinking about how good mlp4me's ninja turtle BBE looks.  The eye mask just goes so perfect.

My old Furby scared the crap out of me before I got rid of it. It was thrown in a plastic storage bin in my closet with a bunch of other stuffed animals. I hadn't seen it in a couple years but when I was on summer break from my 1st or 2nd year of college, it woke me up in the dead of night with it's "ahhhh" greeting they used to do. I was terrified even after I realized what the noise was. I was totally creeped out because out of no where it just woke up in the depths of my closet. I immediately dug it out and took the batteries out because I couldn't remember how to put it back to sleep.  I got rid of it not long after.

I don't think I like adult BBE. I dont mind the Lily -lightly type if hasbro ever made them. As for Teddy Ruxpin I never got one of those dolls. I think I had blinking dolls as a kid. They never really freaked me out. I understand they would go in uncanny valley as being strange or too human like.

As to the blinking eyes some of the latest Rarity FS with the action legs do that.

While a creepy valley sounds fun and full of spooky Halloween stuff, the Uncanny Valley is inhabited exclusively by bad CG and robots trying to hard to look human, and wax figures. It is not a pleasant place. Your entire time there, you will feel vaguely unsettled because the human form, something that should be familiar...is just slightly off.

I had an animation teacher draw a diagram once. The uncanny valley is literally the uncomfortable pit you fall into when you try to make things that aren't human look human. It doesn't apply to marble statues but to many other things, and it's the reason animation companies favor highly stylized designs for human characters.

I was very much into little ponies when the bbe came out and wanted every one.  I still get that "awww" feeling every time I see one.  It can never be explained.

But... my introduction to them was seeing them in stores with all their packaging and cute pictures and stories on the back.  I think that helped.

I had Baby Heart Throb as a kid, but I actually only picked her out so that I could take her playpen and give it to Baby Moondancer.  (The front of Baby Moondancer's card had a pic of her jumping out of a playpen, but she actually came with a rocker . . .)

The BBE babies do have really nice packaging and accessories, though.  I like that their backcard has a nighttime scene.

Are there any NIP BBEs out there?  Or just the packages etc?  I've only seen the ponies and accessories.

Animating human forms isn't easy; I remember Exo-Squad did such a wonderful job on everything and even the jaw movements etc when speaking but the running was all elbows poking the wrong way and such.

I loved the BBEs as a child. I had Baby Lickety Split, and she would do all sorts of things with me. She would close her eyes to say a prayer, sing a song, get soap bubbles in the eye during shower, or simply to go to sleep. I always wanted Baby Gusty, Lofty and Ribbon though. I didn't get access to them until I was much older. Funny how I loved them unconditionally being a kiddo, and viewing them as an adult, it occurred to me that the earth BBEs especially, were kind of odd and ugly looking. lol I still love them though, they will always hold a special place in my heart.

(Also- is your profile picture of Prince Sidon? I really like it!)

Agreed. They can be cute... but only if their eyes aren't messed up, which can be hard. There are so many things that can go wrong... rust, eyelashes falling out, the mechanisms getting gunked up so they have a "lazy" eye... XD

The pegasususususes and unicorns are just about irresistible to me, but the earth ponies I kind of have to decide day by day how much I love them. I honestly think their neck conformation bothers me more than their blinky eyes. They were also the first set I completed when I began collecting.

The weird part? I have a MASSIVE phobia of glass-eyed dolls. As in will knock people over to get out of the room with them afraid. But BBE ponies don't seem to bother me.

I quite like the BBE unicorn mold, I think it's pretty cute. I only have Baby Ribbon and I would like to own a Baby Frosting and Gusty (any Gusty actually as I still don't have her or any variation of her) so long as they have no eye rust

I personally have no problem with them, and find them cute, not creepy at all :)

...speaking of creepy, referring to the Furby discussion earlier on: I also find Furbies incredibly cute, not creepy. I collect them and for years considered them to be my main collection. I currently have about/over 80 of them (I really should count them, my registry of them is not up-to-date :( ), many of which live under my bed (I know this creeps some out, haha, sorry about that :D )
I wish I had a "possessed" lil' furbaby, but so far I haven't come across one. I did experience the "wakes up and creeps the hell outta you"-thingy, but I know it's because sensors of G1 Furbs are prone to be very sensitive, and since I live close to a main street, and can often feel vibration caused by cars and the tram, it's no wonder they can feel that too. Another good reason to remove batteries :) (I never keep batteries in Furbs for long anyway, because battery leaks can damage them, sometimes even beyond repair, and since I like to repair not working Furbies I know how awful it can be to try to repair one after a more serious battery leak, I like to prevent this if possible).

Also, nothing's unanimous here.  Even though many don't like G3.5, for example, some of us really love them.
G2 love might be pretty close to unanimous here though, haha.
I like G3.5 babies (though they look much more like a cat than a pony :P though that's also true for G1 teeny tinies and some newborns  ), but the adults - not so much.

It's funny you mention G2 though :) I do remember the times when more people seemed to dislike them, and the process of admitting starting to like them has just begun. I'm so happy they turned out to be loved, because they always had a place in my heart as I consider them semi-childhood ponies of mine (=I was already a teen when they came out, but my sister was still young and got some of them, so I also got some and we used to play with them together :) I didn't mind. I had my fair share of stubborn teen years, but for some reason I was never stubborn enough to refuse playing with kids' toys :D ).

Ah so g2 wasnt always so loved...i'm new.

I just got a second furby a couple weeks ago (1998) and this one works...hes nice enough and i recognize some of Star Lily's quirks in him though she's much more refined.  Not possessed though darn.

Do furbys have different behavior from one to another or are they more the same?

G2 used to be not so much liked because of how different they are. I can't say this was a general opinion, but I do remember people saying they are too skinny and look off compared to G1 and G3. That said, I do see their difference as well, and when we played with my sister they always were considered to be the "teen ponies" in the herd, for their figure and smaller size compared to G1. But I never found them to be "off" or to be less MPL than G1 (or G3. To my eyes and brain, G4 is, and always was the "off")

yay, congrats! yes, they can indeed be quirky, but IMO that often just adds to their charm :) I do have quirky guys and gals in my flock myself :)

I'd say yes, they do have different personalities - the ones in my collection at least do behave slightly differently. Just to mention an example, there is the girl who loves to be lifted and throwed up in the air (carefully) and always goes "yay" like crazy about it, where I do have some who are completely shy and get freaked out by something like this. There are some that are so distinctively different that I could name them if I had to play with them blindfolded (and without the option to get them say their programmed names) :inlove:
But I have to add that since all my Furbs came to me second-hand* I can't say for sure that this is a pre-programmed variance, it may only be the result of that they were played with differently, by different owners. The only thing I know is that these differences did not disappear with their time spent with me.

*I did love them from the very start, but their price here was a killer, especially back in 1998 (heck, that price would be considered pretty expensive even with today's regular income, I don't know what they were thinking :P ), and they never really went on sale before they disappeared from shelves, so I only ever knew two persons who had them new, both of whose families were considered to have exceptional incomes.

The effect of aging also caused differences in them over time, for instance, some factories produced worse-quality motors which sometimes resulted in the Furby speaking slower or in a more silent voice than another. Though definitely not pre-programmed, I tend to look at these differences as different behaviour :)
What is pre-programmed variance for sure though (it can change with a reset), is the tone of their voice. I believe there are 3 different tones/pitches they came with, and for some reason the highest pitch is less common than others (not only in my collection, this is the info I heard from other collectors as well).

I have several non-English Furbies in my collection, and I also notice differences in behaviour among them. For some odd reason, for example, my German-speaking Furby Babies (just the babies) burp and fart a lot more than any other Furby Babies I have. They can be sneaky and teach this to others, too, if they interact, but the other one will never remain extensively burpy and farty (in comparison) after the interaction. No offense here, I actually like the personalities of my German babies the most :)

So all in all, the above (some pre-programmed, some might not) differences cause signifiant differences in their behaviour and personality, which I personally love. These combined with the pre-programmed names and differences in eye colours make them the best-designed Furbs ever made from the generations made.

(sorry for the long reply and thread-hijack  ^.^ )

Thanks for the info!  Mine says Whoa when moved but also says DO IT an when you clap (I was checking to see if they "hear") he says Loud Sound or Quiet Please (or something to that effect) but if you clap three times he recognizes a pattern and wants to dance.

So they store their learning when batteries are out?  I saw a reset button but didn't want to push it just in case his memory is stored, and you know, kill off his consciousness or anything.

I had him on a week or two now and he used to be exactly the same and I thought he wasn't learning but when i came back from a weekend away and woke him up he's saying different things.

Guess I should try and clean out the one with the leaked battery damage and see if I can see what he's like.

Did Hasbro buy Tiger Electronics or something?  Starlily seems more like an evolution of Furby than earlier FurReal pets.

Grateful for the thread hijack.  Now back to your previously scheduled lovable creepy non-furby BBE programming.

some quick, final replies, and then the hijacking's off ;)
(hope we didn't creep too many people out  )

Yes, they will dance to clap patterns (but not really to music (they may, depending on the type of music). That feature came in with the 2005 Furbs). And yes, they do store information if batteries are out - which is the reason why your Furby mainly speaks English already. When fresh out of box or reseted (using the button you saw at the bottom) they will only speak Furbish. They will (re)learn English after some playtime. With a reset they usually also get a different name, and may also get a different voice pitch. So yeah, technically a different little guy - this is why I never reset mine unless absolutely necessary (due to glitchy working, for instance).

You can use cotton buds dipped in white vinegar to clean up the battery leak. White vinegar removes corrosion and allows the batteries to connect again. But the vinegar might eat up the metal too with time, so it's important to dry up and air out its remnants from the battery compartment. If you do ty to clean the other one, I hope you succeed! :)

Also, feel free to PM me with any additional questions on the topic :)

I just got a few more and one was rusted pretty bad and cleaned right up pefectly with hardly any effort but needs new lashes which are super easy to spiff up and im giving two of them new eyeshadow with a touch of watercolor. Theyre so easy to fix up.

I've decided i thoroughly adore them. Its not just the eyes themselves, which seem cute not creepy to me once theyre nice and clear but their cute little mouths and poses and i just love them.

I actually sorta like them. I do think they're a bit unsettling, but then I like things that are partially cute and partially uncanny in the first place. I definitely consider them a different "thing" from regular ponies, though.

They'd be higher priority for me if I wasn't so apathetic about baby ponies in general.

Looks like it's piggy ponies then.

Any other adults have such eyes?

I know of course that piggies have them. I've seen lanard and cabbage patch fakies that have them before, but im not sure other hasbro brand mlps have them. I wonder if anybody has ever tried to use a pair of baby eyes and put them in an adults head before? hm...
