Hi everyone! I thought I would do a poll with a fun give away!
I'm fascinated by the subject of pony armies and do myself have a pony army.
I know they aren't for everyone and some people don't like them at all and wanted to start a discussion about it to see other peoples view points, this is just for fun ! So please don't take it too seriously.
The giveaway will be forget me not, the flutter pony, with beautiful primavera wings, here she is!

I have a Star Dancer army.... I think there's something like over 100 of them. I counted a while ago and then forgot (but I've added more).

I don't do armies myself (mostly due to my lack of space, so I try to not keep exact doubles of anything in my collections, to have more room for other items), but I LOVE seeing other peoples' armies. That level of dedication toward ones' favorite ponies is admirable to me, I love seeing how dedicated people are to their favorites. :P

I have no problem with it! Personally I don't think I would intentionally do it myself haha xD If I liked the pony enough I would try to get one of each of the variations for it and such, but I wouldn't purposefully buy multiples of the same release or anything. If that makes sense? I'm not sure if that counts as an army or not o:

I do not mind armies at all.i have both an applejack and cherries jubilee army, though i do not really understand why people have the same version of each pony on mass. (Not that it bothers me in the slightest i just do not get it)
I only have one of each variation in my armies otherwise to me it just looks repetitive. Some like that which is more than perfectly fine just not for me.

No I'm not against it. People can collect how they want. I don't usually have multiples myself because that's one space less for a pony I want, however I am now in possession of a small g3/g4 Rainbowdash army. I'll show it off when my retro dash comes in the mail.

I would consider 4 a small army, my cotton candy army started unintentionally, and is still small but seems to be growing as I'm now looking for variations, I love the 35th anniversary cc x

I think it's interesting how the subject of armies as controversial has only really become a thing recently...people have been keeping pony armies for years. I have less problem with people having an army of ponies than I do with people permanently altering a pony, because if someone did sell their army, the ponies would leave to new homes unscathed. Armies aren't hurting, even if they are kind of hoardish. There are hundreds of ponies out there which we never see, living in collections of people with them in storage anyway.
But I think as ponies get harder to find we'll see the subject come up again. There has certainly been some bad feeling towards people hoarding harder to find ponies. I think maybe it will get to a point where making in your face brag posts about armies of rarer ponies will be discouraged, but I don't think armies will ever cease.
The way I see it is that there are actually many more loose ponies than collectors.
As to whether or not I have armies - the answer is generally no. I do have I think five Tropical Breezes, one from childhood and one which is MIB included in that number, but that's the most of the same pony and all of them have reasons attached as to why I have them all.
I have six Baby Mischiefs but I count them as different because they are all different. There is one HK, one NC, and four made in China - one with rainbow tinsel in mane and tail, one with gold tinsel in the mane and tail, one with gold in the mane and rainbow in the tail and one with the reverse. So six ponies, all different - not an army.
I have a fair few Cherries Jubilees too, but aside having MOC and loose versions (again one from childhood) of the two UK releases, none are doubles, all are different variants/releases/versions (including european, SS, Spain, etc). Ditto on Medley (I think Italy, Mexico, Greek, Peru...as well as the two regular HK versions and a y2 MOC). Those to me aren't armies, but variants, so they don't count as the 'same'. To some people they do but I don't think those kinds of armies cause controversy.
But I am not against armies, because to me they do no harm to the pony for the long run. Most armies are very well loved and appreciated by their owners, thus what can be wrong with that?

This was an extremely well thought out reply, I love every single one of my cotton candies but I'm fairly certain just like my flutters as time goes by I will generally give some away and sell a couple but I mainly like to do give always to people I know love to collect.
It upsets me when I see a certain pony hoarded just to be held and sold at insane prices which is what happens to the 35th anniversary ponies where I live, I think hording with the intention to hike the price up is quite bad but I understand not everyone will agree x

Flickr isn't working for me right now but I was going to show a pic of my G1 Twilight the unicorn army even though most of them are custom versions of her,
I think pony armies are fun as long as someone doesn't decide to hoard every copy of that pony just so no one else can have one.

I adore your sweet army! I wish I could have a Bow Tie army, she is my favorite and the first pony I found in a thrift store when I used to live in the Netherlands :blush: Also I really love Forget me not, she would be and amazing add to my small collection! Thanks for the Give away opportunity ^.^

Everyone's armies are always so cute, I always love seeing other's collections! I do not have the funds or space to have many multiples, but I love seeing all the different color variants or poses of the same pony! I don't know that I personally would own dozens of the exact same pony, but ones with different hair or poses definitely, or rescues because I am a sucker for rescues...

I wouldn't collect an army myself, because of storage space and it's just not my style. It doesn't bother me if other people have armies, except maybe if they're a really rare pony. If someone, somehow, someway had a Rapunzel army, I think i might be a bit bothered then. (By wondering how they can even afford multiple Rapunzel's :lol: )

I don't intentionally make armies, but I do rescue all the G1s I find at the thrift store so I may have unintentionally created an army. I'd have to pull them out of their storage boxes to see for sure. I know I created an accidental G3 army by doing this and am in the process of rehoming 99% of them because they're not my favorite and I don't have the space for them.
If other people want to collect an army of any particular character then they should go ahead. I've seen some lovely custom work because someone has armies that they want to increase and I don't see an issue with that, either. And if someone wants to spend a fortune on as many Mimics as they can afford, well, that's their business and good for them working towards a goal.

I respect other people's right to form armies (even if I don't support it) but personally I can't imagine having more than one of each pony (unless it's an actually interesting variation, like Wind Whistler in the Surprise pose) I think it would be kind of weird plus my OCD hates redundance.

LOL! At least the difference is someone with an MLP army, if it's from an older gen, isn't still promoting the company they hate. Or character?
All that's going to do is give Nintendo the message that people REALLY REALLY want Rosalina, and because she's brand new they'll just make tons more that should be out in no time, right? Lol.
I don't have an army myself, but the one pony I like buying multiple versions of is G4 Luna, weirdly enough! I'm not even big into G4 but I have 3 versions of her so far and would like one more. (The new blue glittery fashion style! Even though I don't like the rebooted G4 faces, I want her because she IS SO BLUE AND SPARKLY!!) I love her celestial theme, the moon and night is my favourite, and I LOVE her colors! I did like her more as Nightmare Moon, though. (I don't watch the show though) I have two versions of her from when she was still purple (Water Cutie and original FS) and the big blue BAB I found at a thrift store. Oh, and the Nightmare Moon brushable. I'd love one of the collector's statues of her too but I just can't justify that price for anything G4.
I do love pony armies though! I find them interesting to see but I'd never have a full on army myself. I would if I rescued all the ponies I find at thrift stores, lol! But I always leave duplicates in hopes other pony collectors find the one they need. (I have a sneaking suspicion that other pony collectors also frequent my favourite thrift store. They often seem picked through [like when there's ONLY fakies left] and I've seen on a few occassions, G1s being moved to the top shelves of like, trading cards and other things instead of with the other kiddie toys. Only met one collector IRL though and ironically it was at a Burger King, she had a Fair Feathers pin on her uniform from PonyFair.)

I guess I'd be a little bothered if the pony was rare/expensive... but that'd be more out of jealousy than anything if I'm being honest :lol: Most armies I've seen tend to be of more common ponies, so mostly I just think they're cool :)

Firstly, I love that you have chosen CC to be your Army Pony, as she is so often overlooked. I was actually excited to get her myself as I didn't have her as a child, though my best friend did.
As for Armies, I don't have the space to do this myself. I do however want every variant of HK Cherries Jubilee, another largely overlooked pony. And I think I am there, just need one with faded cherries who isn't a variant at all but is different to the ones I have.
I don't mind other people collecting armies either; who am I to tell people how to collect? Everyone has their own different interests and goals but we are all united by a common love of ponies.

I like seeing other people's pony armies though I don't really have one myself. I do have multiple Peachys (about five, I think) and I like the way they are all slightly different; I suppose they are from different batches.

And that's actually sort of helping the community, I feel like, because no one else wants 300 Peachys! :lmao:

I love peachy :P I also love collecting uncared for cotton candies and giving them a good wash and fixing their hair its just so satisfying to freshen up a dull dirty pony and make them look nice and clean and loved again.

Of course I'm against selfish hoarders but I do know the difference between a selfish hoarder and an army person.
Also I see the point of getting all the variants. That makes them different and in my opinion not an army.
It's kinda hard for me to say this knowing I will most likely get multiple messages trying to debunk my opinion.

maybe we could differentiate armies from clones (or clone armies?) as there are some ponies that have international variants and multiple gens that to me makes it easier to explain as to why ya collect a light vs a dark symbol, a two stamp, a four stamp, an air brush eye, etc (can ya guess my italian armies I am talking about?) that can be fun to geek out when explaining to that lovely newcomer who found out about the collection as to why ya have "so many X" on the shelf
Of course, to each their own and a clone army of all the same pose can be kinda cool as well - someone awhile ago had posted pics of their tex army that was just a really lovely burst of yellow on the shelf :-)
I really do need to assemble the troops here and update my pictures so thanks for having this thread I will see what i can do to schedule some overdo spring dusting that has to be done anyway it's a great excuse for a spa/photo shoot

No, this seems fair to be honest, I wouldn't have multiples of a rare pony because it would feel wrong but I also don't have anything against people who do because I know its jealousy on my part l really want a rapunzel and can't imagine someone having an army of them :(

Good point on rare ones. Mine are various Minty versions and custom Mintys. A couple of them had really bad hair and are alt rehairs.

I was gonna vote against it but then realized I had many pony armies started so that would of been hypocritical now wouldn't it? :p
I think it depends though. Like army includes variations, as people have stated, whereas clones are of the same release. I personally, have an army of Serena, Stripes, Heart Throb, 4-Speed, Tootie and such going myself. No one is rare, sure, (well, as rare as g1s go ya know) but there isn't harm in hoarding "common" ponies, especially seeing as I'll probably sell some eventually. Now, hoarding Mimic? Raps? That's selfish. At that point it seems you want them just because they're rare. These things are sparse at this point. Does that mean the whole community has to share these things? No its your property, and even if I think its selfish, my opinion doesn't really matter ultimately, me nor anyone else has control over your life. I think its different if you thrift these things too :wonder:

I don't see any difference in having an army of rare ponies vs common ponies. Everyone is somewhere different with their finances. :shrug:
I'm pretty indifferent to if someone has an army or not.
:) I had a really cute takara fakie army at one point during my prime collecting days.

I like seeing armies because the different versions and variations are interesting to me! I don't really see the point of having multiples that look identical or near identical, though. To each their own, I suppose.

I don't see what the difference is between a common pony army and a rare pony army? Like, either way they aren't your ponies. How is one person with 15 Rapunzels different than 15 people with one each? You still don't have one, so...? Does it really matter if they all belong to the same person?

It is so interesting how this topic has evolved tbh, since as I said before, years ago nobody even thought about it as an issue. But it's like with everything, when the numbers go down, it increases the price on the ones that are available, so the more that are hoarded by one person, the higher the prices are for everyone else.
On the same note, though, they are also making it more expensive for them to buy another to add to the army.
I can think of many better things to spend money on than hoarding Rapunzels at her price, but there are sometimes people who do act to increase the value to resell at a later point. I just can't see that being practical with Rapunzel.
As to whether it's selfish, or whether it matters, that's a question everyone's moral compass will answer differently. But I'd like to think that if people are collecting armies, they're doing it for the sheer joy of it, not to keep items from other collectors or push the prices up. Sooner or later most of those ponies end up back in circulation anyway, as people selling off collections or armies is not uncommon (whether by choice or by need).
For me, since people rarely damage their army hoards, especially the htf ones, it's less of a problem. They may or may not come back up for sale eventually, but if and when they do, they won't be damaged irreversably, which is for me more important. So yeah, they may not be available right now because someone has 15, but if that person sells up, there will be 15 ponies in good shape going out to other collectors.
There are far more selfish things IMO that a collector can do than take good care of a bunch of the same pony for several years together, because it means that in x number of years there are still x number of the same pony in good condition somewhere in the world. At least that's how I see it. Whether the pony be Bow Tie or Mimic or whoever.

It is selfish. But that's actually the nature of any collecting hobby. We aren't collecting for our health, or for the benefit of humanity or anything like that. We're collecting because we love something and want it for ourselves and we spent money on things we didn't need.
And as long as its done in moderation and never takes over neccesary expenses that's okay.

I have multiple versions of: Princess Serena, Heart Throb, Cotton Candy, Rarity...but none of the exact same figure. I consider those groups "armies"...but does that count?

I don't have a problem with armies, but I haven't really thought about it critically before. I like seeing pictures of people's armies, especially when they have lots of different versions of the same character! Its cool to see all the variants and customs they've made or commissioned, etc. I'm kind of building an army of my own but its not a certain pony its a certain pose (Sugarberry)! Does anyone else have a pose-based army??

I have an accidental army myself, actually. I should get a picture once I gather ALL of my Applejacks, Pinkie Pies and Twilights >_<

I have multiple versions of: Princess Serena, Heart Throb, Cotton Candy, Rarity...but none of the exact same figure. I consider those groups "armies"...but does that count?
Any royal pony army would actually be a Dynasty. ;)

I personally don't do many variant Ponies, so if I have one of say, Baby Ribbon already, I don't need another. Otherwise I would end up skint!!! However, for a few choice Ponies: Twisty Tail, Starcatcher, my first Pony Butterscotch (recently started that one) & Twilight Sparkle, I do collect variants. The biggest lot (part army, part air force) is of course the Twilight Sparkle collection, & though it isn't complete, there are a lot of Ponies in it.

Missing from the picture is my G3 lickety (shes upstairs) and my white with red hair helados (missing in the pony room, as usual), my reddish/magenta cone Lickety (suspect SHES in the computer room) and one i have coming in the mail, keep an eye on the Nirvana forum next week for my brag on her ;D

I don't have an army, but I love seeing pictures of them! I don't see how it's unethical. People can spend their money on whatever they want, and whenever something is available in limited quantities, it's first-come first-served.

Good point on rare ones. Mine are various Minty versions and custom Mintys. A couple of them had really bad hair and are alt rehairs.
I gotta know, does someone have a Punzie or Mimic army?? And can I have their bank account??
As much as I might literally die from jealousy I would like to see a rapunzel army, I think I need to find someone to make me a fakie custom

I voted that it bothers me a little bit. This only due to the fact that I generally do not care to have double ponies in my collection. Call it OCD or neuroticism. It just bugs me. Therefore, I do not do "clone" armies but I do have "character" armies of Sugarberry, AJ, RD, and FS. These are all variations of the character, sometimes across generations or including characters I consider "linked". The only two "clones" I keep is 2 regular adult Sugarberries, one each to go with my two Baby Sugarberrys.
My Baby Sugarberrys are technically different variants because one is CHINA and the other HONG KONG (or whatever those markings are). I only have 2 of them because I paid market price for my first one after it was my grail for years after finding out she existed. I was then lucky enough to find my second one at a rummage sale with Baby Love Melody. I thought about selling my "extra" one but found I could not part with her. Combine that with not being able to part with my childhood Sugarberry when I got an upgrade, and I now have 2 sets.
As far as people finding it selfish to keep "clone" armies of expensive armies, I think more jealousy than anything else plays into that. I have had people at meets tell me I should sell one of my Baby Sugarberrys to them because he or she "don't even have one!". Comments like that strike me as rude. It is not my fault someone does not have a certain pony in his or her collection. Just because I do not give or sell my "extra" does not mean you would be the one to have it. For one I would not just give it, and chances are those that do not have it already, are likely not willing to pay my price even if it is fair market value.

I don't really have a true army of clones, I don't like exact duplicates in my collection, but I'm working on collecting different variations of Luna and Minty :biggrin:
I don't mind at all if other people have clone armies, it's not like they stole them.
Though I'd be jealous if someone had a army of takaras/takara fakies. :lol:

I have an army! A baity boy army! ;) They're a lot of fun, even though I haven't added any new members in a long time!
Admittedly, sometimes I get a little jelly seeing some of the HTF armies; I know there's someone with a bunch of Rapunzels! But if they want to spend their money buying Rapunzels, well, who am I to stop them? It's a free world! Mostly, I see a lot of armies of really common, dirt common ponies; I've seen a Peachy army, too! And that's actually sort of helping the community, I feel like, because no one else wants 300 Peachys! :lmao:
I love peachy :P I also love collecting uncared for cotton candies and giving them a good wash and fixing their hair its just so satisfying to freshen up a dull dirty pony and make them look nice and clean and loved again.
Hahaha, I'm the same way!! I have probably 6 Cotton Candys lying around, because they're just too sad to pawn off on someone else, even after I clean them! No one wants this sad, mildewy, tailless Cotton Candy... so she'll stay here at Snapdragon's Isle of Wayward Ponies! :lmao:

If I had the space, I admit I would probably hoard Medley and Glory because I wanted them so much as a kid and never had them. I wouldn't think most people would mind, though, as they seem common in the places they were actually sold.
I also admit that I often look at Brush & Grows and want to buy them even though I already have all of them. I may have a couple of doubles already (I call them upgrades) but it's not really an army situation. It's funny but although I love ponies MOC I don't really want the regular BnGs MIP. I want to play with their hair....
So yeah, if I had space, I would have more of those guys. I still hunt auctions for BnGs made in China (other than Braided Beauty, who I have) so that I have an excuse to buy them under the justification they're different from my HK ones.

I personally don't mind it, unless they were purposely hoarding a certain pony to take it out of circulation :p If I could afford it I'd want to collect every version of a single pony (eg, Milky way), but I don't really see the appeal of having identical ones!

I have just paid for Italian Cherries to join my Cherries herd, but it will be quite a wait before she arrives. I was supposed to fetch her myself from the UK in July, but with the current world situation I don't think I will be able to do that.

Armies are fun! You get to see every little variation in the same pony. Blue bell is my purposeful army pony. :lovey: I have a few nirvana of her, Argie, Mexican, Brazillian and CC/FF, for me an army is 3 or more of the same pony. Unintentional armies, Lemon Drop and Rice Krispies baby... :P

all 11 are italians - IF you dare to try to be a completionist be warned you will end up with a CP army trying to find every two stamp versus 4 stamp versus stamp eyes versus airbrush as well as color variants; oh, and if ya get real picky there are also reverse symbols out there and alternate mane/tail colors
and I love all the bluebelle variants :-) too! What I love about CP in general is that they make for easy army display already in that "soldier" parade pose
