Title: Prince Cadence & Wedding Castle - now with pics! MERGED
Post by: StrawberryReef on January 23, 2012, 06:27:38 PM: So I was doing my usual mind numbing pony research for anything new and I think I may have come across something exciting... I somehow ended up on a German branding licensing site and searched my little pony and came across these two unusual listings with no pictures... date expected in August 2012... I also used my handy google translate and ended up with...

I'm betting they are going to use the brushable celestia mold. They wouldn't make a new mold like that for one pony, and hasbro does love to recycle

Now this sounds about right - they have a mould - why not make more money and reuse it....

I actually would be a little worried on the price range - $40 for a cardboard castle but only around $60 for a plastic one???? Really?....what the heck size is this thing going to be! Fingers crossed its just very well priced!

Yeah, my thoughts, too. The Princess Cadence mold looks nice, but I'd have like to seen a fashion style set. May or may not buy depending on price.

Also, boy mold! One of Hasbro's favourite past times is recycling molds, hopefully this means we'll see more boy ponies!

But what size are these? I can't really tell. And I do really hope this poor guy ends up with more hair, because from this picture, it doesn't look too good... Still though, I was pretty skeptical of ever seeing any boys, so this is pretty cool, even if it is part of an expensive set.

Yeah, you know, it's the sort of hair I imagined the toys would have if they wanted to be styled just like the cartoon, before I took a good look at real My Little Pony toys with their long, thin hair. But this "prince" pony's tail actually looks longer and fuller in his cartoon image!

I had this same problem with Rarity's carousel. I don't have room for it, but I wanted Sweetie Swirl, so now I'm stuck with a set I don't have room for. I really, really hope they'll also release a smaller set with just the bride & groom and maybe a cake accessory or something.

I wish Shining Armour's outfit looked closer to the art of him and the hair looks weird, but I guess it's ok. At least it's a boy pony. And I doubt Hasbro would make a new mold (which I hear is expensive) and just use it once, so there's a good chance we'll get more boys in the future. Princess Cadence looks great, though.

I'm sort of neutral on that area. I had some trolls when I was little and, while the boy's hair wouldn't "match" the girls', troll hair is actually much less of a hassle. I wouldn't want my boy to be high-maintanence. I know that a lot of collector's get their kicks out of styling pony hair, but it's just not my thing and I think I'd actually like being able to pick him up without worrying about messing up his hairdo. ;) Whatever type of hair it is, I do agree it should be just a little bit longer and fuller at the ends.

The prince looks a bit underdressed compared to the artworks and the princess and it somewhat looks like a bib. As for the hair, it does look like dead pixels from a camera flash, but it could also be dreaded troll hair (ick!)

The prices on the first page seem marked up for Germany. I definitely think they will be cheaper for the US.
Example: US singles are $5, Germany ones are above $11 last I heard

LOL I wasn't going to say it, but you expressed it perfectly what I thought in my heart. And then Hasbro will run back to fans whinning that "we tried but it didn't work!". Like duh, if you try to sell what looks nothing like the prince on the box art. Despite them not being quite what we wanted maybe kids will like the hair. Don't they bring in employees' kids to see if kids actually like them before they release them?

Ahem. Now that I've taken a minute to relax....I might want to complain, because I do that very well. My apologies; don't want to spoil the fun here. However...

My first thought when I saw his hair was that it looks like it is fuzzy troll hair. Honestly, look close - there's no way it's just a bad image. That's troll hair. And I hope it doesn't stay that way!

I also don't like his eyes (I hope any future boys have better ones), and his head does look funny - sort of block-ish...

I agree that G4 playsets are pretty bleh, and this castle is no exception, BUT, just imagine what Dream Castle would cost these days. Probably like a million dollars. Since I don't want to collect playsets anyway, I am personally not terribly bothered by cheap playsets. It is disappointing for all the kids/collectors who would like better stuff, but, what can ya do?

NONETHELESS I do think this is a great step forward, and I do hope to see more boys (sold as singles, hopefully!). And please no troll hair! You can't brush that stuff!

I don't know, I think having a Prince as a playset might be an indication that they DO think boys will be popular.

If you recall, this is exactly how the first G3 baby pony, Pink Sunsparkle, was introduced.

When Hasbro was unsure about producing G3 pegasi, they released Star Catcher as a single to test the waters--not as cheap as your average pony, but much cheaper than a playset. (Why they thought pegasus ponies might not be popular I have no idea, but that's what the Hasbro reps at SDCC told me.)

I actually don't think it looks bad. Overall he looks great though, it was a little worrisome when the blind bag boys looked a wee bit odd, but I've definitely grown used to them.

I'm not a fan of the troll hair either. In the picture with it being as thin and whispy as it is, it reminds me of the Phantom of the Opera with his mask off :P But even though my first reaction was "ewww, troll hair!" I don't think it'll be THAT bad in person. I'm more worried about his eyes...but then again, I don't love how they did most of the girl pony's eyes anyway either. I'd need to see a closer-up picture of him to see for sure. I also don't have a good feel for how his face looks at all, being a small picture and him being white. But I like how they did the blind bag boys, so hopefully he'll be similar to that.

I think his little coat is a snap-on thing. If you look at the pictures, it looks like it sticks out further than it would if it was painted on; it doesn't quite line up right. So while it does look a little dinky (especially compared to how he looks in that adorable picture on the box!) considering that it IS a toy for children, I think that was probably the best way to do it. Sure, I would have loved to have seen a G1 ponywear-style coat that slid on and velcroed in the back, but I think that would have been a little too difficult both to produce and to play with, keeping in mind that G4s are quite a bit smaller than G1s.

Princess Cadence is lovely :) My only complaint is "omg more pink why," but I guess since she is a bride and she is being sold with a playset, the pink is more understandable.

And as for the castle itself...Well, that's not a castle. More like a balcony lol. And yes there isn't much to it. But it is more of a playset than the dinky little things Hasbro has been pumping out lately. It's not just a facade, and there are actually horizontal surfaces that your pony can stand on, whoo! I think its a bit of an improvement. And it's cute. Looks like it could be a good place to display some of my ponies that I ran out of room for on my G4 shelf.

TL;DR: It's not perfect but omg BOY!!!

As for the boy himself, I'm not the biggest fan of his hair, but I'll have to see it in person before I can form a real opinion on it. Who knows, it might be changed when it's release. There have been several ponies who differ from their promotional photos (Cupcake for example).

I am a little disappointed the castle is another 2D playset. I guess it will be easier to display that way but I think the other castles make better toys. Considering my daughter will be getting the castle part most likely.

I really like the Princess's wings too! Luna should have been done in that pose. I wonder if they will redo Luna in that pose eventually.

As much as the likes of Dream Castle or Paradise Estate look amazing and a have lot more play value... I just don't have anywhere to put huge playsets like that! However, I am a sucker for playsets and the G4 sets all display wonderfully on narrow shelves with room to spare for ponies in front of them.

So I'm really looking forward to the castle here. It looks really cute and should be able to hold a handful of ponies without taking up an entire room for itself :)

Oh, and, of course, obligatory OMG PRINCE BOY UNICORN AARRGHGHGHGHGGFLFLFLFLFLFLF.

I actually really dig the mold they're using. The head is a little on the square side (but that's okay because a lantern-jawed prince is perfect anyway) and the eyes are not how I would have done it - though, they don't look that bad - and, of course, the hair could be better as others have said... but all up, he looks pretty sweet. And a great first step to toward hopefully seeing more boys in future (Braeburn please, but that's probably hoping for too much).

This is no doubt a beautiful set, but whether I'll want to get it or not will depend on the characters' depiction on the show.

A boy pony! and a not-cardboard castle! and a new princess! with cool wings! I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing is happening!!

I do wish the castle was a bit more... more. But maybe later on in the G4 run they'll do a really fancy big castle playset. Of course it will probably cost a hoof and a flank but it would sooooo be worth it.

as I understand it, the 3 new flower fillies in the 2012 toy fair video are also sold separately. The castle set just comes with Shining Armor, Cadence and the castle
