What are you guys expecting for either the g5 toyline or animation? Are you going in with no expectations at all? Or with reservations?
The most I expect with any certainty is that the prequel movie slated to be release in summer 2020, and g5 season 1 slated to release in the fall is definitely being delayed due to COVID. I had slight hope that there will be a brand new cast of ponies, but I have always doubted that, given g5 will ride on G4’s coattails.
-
Yes but not good ones.
-
Yes but not good ones.
oof. Expecting it to flop, are we?
-
I know it’s a simple one, but I just hope g5 is worth it. G4 is what got me into mlp, and it was fantastic. I hope hasbro can take what they learnt from the cartoon and apply it to make something just as wonderful. I don’t want us to slip back into what the later g3 animation was.
I think I’m going on with some reservations, but not super specific ones. Quality animation, probably better quality on the toys, more variation (can we stop with the same mane 6 over and over again?) and overall something that can hold a candle to its predecessors. Let this next generation be better, building on what success the old had and learning from its mistakes. I just hope that the future looks bright, and the toys and animation reflect this.
In all honesty, I don’t expect hasbro to take this kind of path. There is little indication that they would, but I’ll hold onto a scrap of hope.

oof. Expecting it to flop, are we?
Not exactly. I'm expecting more of the same tired and rehashed formula and characters.

yeah, I her ya. I’m deathly afraid of MLP becoming one not those franchises, like TMNT where only the same characters are focused on in every reboot. All thanks to FIM’s success....
-
My expectations not that great, but hopeful. What I didn't like about FiM after a while was too much pop cultural references and growing to really dislike the characters. I know that is going to happen in G5 eventually for me, though I do hope for a new cast of characters...
-
I have no expectations and certainly no good ones at that
-
I expect that if they go for something different than G4 it can do well. But if they just try to redo G4 then neither FiM fans or general MLP fans will be happy. I lived and loved FiM, but you can't recapture that ever again. It's best for them to make something new
-
I expect more of the Core 7/Mane 6 concept(the same ponies over and over), and the quality to continue to decline. It’s also expecting to save some money and space for this generation.
-
What I'd like is if we have to stick with the same six ponies that each one gets a unique mold. I know this probably won't be a popular opinion but I'd rather get the Mane 6 again with 6 unique body molds than 6 totally new characters that all use the same mold and are just palette swaps of each other with different cutie marks.
-
I try to go in with no or low expectations so I don't get disappointed haha

Agreed.
For me, G4 has killed My Little Pony in pretty much every area that made it good in past generations.
Repetitive and boring character designs. Check.
Repetitive and unconvincing storylines. Check.
Repetitive and boring packages. Check.
Repetitive and boring gimmicks. Check.
Girly stereotypes about bows, ribbons, parties, fashion and other things? Check.
There are some lovely G4 brushables, and I don't mind the repetitive pose of the original ones, but that variety was stifled so early it didn't get a chance to take off. I hate the rebooted poses, for me they all look ridiculous and the variety of characters disappeared then as well.
I was never a fan of the G1 TV show, until I saw FIM and realised actually G1 had some good episodes. FIM is at its best predictable. At worst there are times it's pushing questionable moral values on the audience.
I have issues with it trying to frame 'friendship' in such a forced and unrealistic way, too.
MLP as an original and innovative toy line basically died the moment it became dependent on an animation. It's just a shame it was that animation, because now we're stuck with the most annoying pony characters ever created...probably forever.
-
My only expectation is that bronies hate it completely, although I wouldn't get my hopes up.
-

I agree with this, I'd love to see a larger variety of poses! G4 for years had basically the same pose over and over and I found that a bit boring, but then when there were some new poses released I was happy to see that and went out and bought them.
I'd also like to see the toys be larger again, more like G3-size, but I don't think I really expect this.
-
My expectations are so low I can't hope for anything but to be pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong.
-
I have hopes but not so much expectations. If the toys even somewhat resemble the ponies we saw in the concept art, I'll be happy!
-
Don't even start me!!!
What I WANT to see with G5:
Different characters we've never had before.
NOT a Core 7/ Mane 6 repeat ad nauseum, but instead a wide variety of characters, including several of different species.
Brushables being the main focus again, with smaller blindbag-styles being secondary to this
A decent size of Pony with Pony-like features & decent hair.
What I EXPECT to see from G5:
Pretty much none of the above...
-

Silver linings and all that.

Oh I missed seeing the concept art I guess! Going to go hunt for some now...
-

The concept art was pretty, but I want to see new characters. It's not a new gen for me unless it erases the basis of the previous, which includes most of the cast and the setting.
Though honestly I'm not sure I can do another 8 years of Pinkie Pie. I didn't like her in G3, and she didn't improve on me in G4. That's 17 years of too much pink. It's time for a change.
All that said, I don't want any G1 ponies to pop up in a new generation this time. I'm not a fan of making new generations hark back to the original at all, honestly...except in terms of having variety and real creativity in the toyline.
If G4 had persisted with all the variety at the start, it would have been a much better generation.

Well that and it needed better QC.

That's just a general modern disposable toy problem, though. It's not unique to MLP. Sadly.

Touche'.

Nope.
If it's something I like, cool. If not, it's not a big deal.
-
^ pretty much this
If it's nice, good, if it's not... *shrug* More money for my other collections.
-
As someone who has zero interest in G4 I don't think I'll like the look of the G5s. G4s are way l too modern for my taste already, I really prefer the good old G1s I grew up with. Plus as I've never owned a TV set in my whole life (I grew up TV-free) I've never seen a single MLP show, so I won't watch any future series either.
-
i would have liked to have seen the brand take a break. it gets exciting for the new generation when the ponies are new and upcoming. over a decade of FiM is exhausting. Let us wait ten years and try again >.<

I agree with this. I don't understand the need to hop from one gen to another (for fans, I mean, I understand why Hasbro want to do it).
If you stop being a fan the moment a thing is not in the store or on TV, you weren't much of a fan to begin with.
-
For me, I feel like we are on a break now? I know that the new show is out but I haven’t gone looking for it. But most telling is what *isn’t* being put out. I was just at Walmart today and the mlp section has shrunk down to exactly 1 shelf! And Target isn’t much better. That to me says that Hasbro is doing the bare minimum to keep mlp in the collective consciousness.

Welp, Ponybookworm beat me to it. XD
If we’re talking hopes/standards I’d like to see in G5, I’d say... way, WAY less reliance on animation to carry the franchise, and more focus on toys. MLP always put animation on the backburner in previous gens, and the toys were amazing. Then the idea of a central cast took hold, and here we are... -_-
If we’re talking about what I actually expect them to do? The answer is: reuse the cast, with slight aesthetic or character changes, reuse the tone and storytelling formula, and drown us in a sea of Mane 6 for the NEXT ten years.
RIP Creativity.

Sadly Hasbroken doesn't make money off a line if it's on break mode, and money would be the driving factor for them to make ponies.
In terms of the "concepts", were those proven to be true concepts? I heard somewhere that Twilight wasn't going to be in the next iteration, but that could be false too.
-
I would like to see a huge variety of adorable ponies. They don’t need names or fleshed out characters. Just something to collect.
-
I sadly expect G5 to just be an "alternate universe G4".
With similar characters and similar character designs.
What dissapointed me the most about the concept art is that the character designs hardly look different. Big eyes. Short noses.

Yeah I didn't like them.either. Some of the horsier G3ish designs were real pretty. But the grayhound looking ones with the pointy noses and thin limbs were equally off-putting.

The pinkie pie with the legs-but-no-body is still creeping me out...

Ever since Pony Life was announced, I've been headcanoning a G5 the way I'd want it to be, so I'm prepared to be let down.
My hopes and wishes:
A vast variety of ponies with unique names, colors, and themes to collect
Ponies with a fresh, new style, that still can at least be called equines
Large detailed playsets with lots of accessories that tie into the show
Quality above that of a dollar-store fakie
A series that's a timeless fantasy adventure that appeals to kids and adults alike, but doesn't pander to either of them
My more realistic expectations:
The Mane six, just with horns and wings switched around. Same color schemes, same personality archetypes...zzzz..
Will continue the trend of big eyes and tiny snouts
All toys will be blind bags and/or include slime
Pandering to memes and tween slang with the toyline
Toy quality will make Happy Meal prizes look like handcrafted keepsakes
Making the TV show try way too hard to get an audience of bronies back with even more out of place pop culture references at the expense of good writing
-
My expectation is non-Flash animation. The rest are hopes and dreams
-
Zero expectations.
But the toys would have to be MINDBLOWING to catch my interest if it's the mane 6 again.
If that's the case they should just rebrand the whole thing as "Mane 6," lmao.
Just declare MLP dead, and call it "These Six Horses in Whatever Art Style is Popular Right Now"
The style is starting to deviate so far from the actual feel of MLP, and more just focused on shoehorning the mane 6 into every new trendy theme or style that comes along. The PonyLife ponies remind me of those LoL dolls, and the G5 concept art has a very Disney cartoon vibe to it, all of them- like Disney princess or that Spirit cartoon. Maybe some anime vibes here and there.
But that was never MLP before, it was its own thing and had its own distinct style (even through to G4), now it just feels like it's trying to "fit in" with everything else that's popular these days, but all feels so same-y.
(so I guess zero expectations isn't necessarily true, then.
...not good expectations. lol)

How can you say that the G5 art reminds you of the spirit cartoon when they still have balloon heads, bird beaked muzzles and giant eyeballs? Dreamworks knows what a horse looks like. Even if Riding Free looks like a cheap, cgi computer game you find in the bargain bin, when compared to its beautifully animated predecessor.
-
Lol apologies, I wasn't trying to take a jab at Spirit... (though admittedly I do find it funny that being compared to G5 MLP is an insult... lol! MLP, what has haaaappened to youuu :( )
Their figures mixed with the Applejack designs reminded me, I suppose. Maybe they were nudging towards MPP inspiration? I didn't get that vibe though, lol. I got the Spirit vibe also because of their love to bandwagon, recently.

I don't take it as an insult. Its just a bizarre comparison that doesn't make sense to me. Unless you mean a noticeable drop in quality, in which case I retract my statement.
-
Ohh I see, apologies lol I guess looking at it I had remembered it so differently. Totally my bad, I misremembered it entirely. I thought it had a much more modern Disney look with the giant eyes and heads and tiny features they've been going for recently. I must have mixed that up with something else. Looking at it yes that show does look totally fine honestly. Now I'm wondering what I must have been thinking of, lol. Apologies.
I do think maybe Applejack's more natural coat made me think of that.
I do think it is an interesting idea for her though, I like the idea of natural ponies as well.

If Hasbro could take the quality/variety/cutness of the Hairdorables toyline by Justplay and turn that into G5 ponies, then I'd say they'd win me and my money back. But the stuff Hasbro has on the shelves right now doesn't move me.

I'm cautiously curious, Not Hopeful, about the announcement that the next iteration of MLP will have a new cast of characters. Fine, that's a good first step.
Until I see the toys I'm still torn between dreading the awful, deformed style that Hasbro "thinks" is a horse.
Or crossing my fingers for the SDCC Twilight/Retro Mane Six Pack style which looks very horsey but with better eye placement then the Crossover Crew.
