Title: "Natural" Colours on a Pony
Post by: Ragamuffin on November 03, 2018, 05:40:21 PM
What do you think about ponies who are less... Technicolor? I know a lot of people are open to it, but let's get down to the nitty-gritty. Why? Or why not?

Rainbow-coloured ponies are always my favourite regardless, but I don't see why Hasbro is adamant about doing anything outside of pink. There's a lot of different things you can do with these colours! I'd love to see a grey pony with rainbow hair, a black and gold pony, or an obligatory neapolitan pony! Even things like a pure white pony are rare, but still very nice. :)

On the other hand, it could get boring fast if the designers aren't creative. I never found Doctor Hooves or Octavia to be particularly interesting. At least Octavia has purple eyes going for her.

At that point my ideal "natural pony" would be half and half, a natural coat with colourful hair. If a pony is purely natural, it would have to have a nice theme/symbol to tie it all together.

I'm okay with it, depending on how its done. But generally, I want my realistisc toy horsies realistic, and my fantasy horsies rainbow colored. Gray and black are fine.

I actually like natural color ponies! Dont get my wrong, I love rainbow, totally unnatural ponies (That is the main idea of My Littles Ponies after all) but brown/white/grey ponies just have something so common and cute that got me.

My pony sona is a brown and white pony. I think that the thing is play with their marks and hairstyles to make them unique since yeah, a just "brown pony" is boring, like you said.

Im still totally 100/100 with natural color ponies with some touch of colors on their manes! Like a brown pony white blue strikes, or some white pony with cute pink hair (Like Sundance)

I'd be scared that going all natural would make MLP just like most other horse lines. I like MLP for the bright colors...I know you can do some really nice things with natural colors, but I'd love to keep technicolor for the most part.
I think keeping natural colors to the body would let ponies still feel MLP, but would be really neat to see!

I would love pure black bodies, but not enthused about grey or brown. (Snuzzle is cute but she's enough.)

I think it would be fun to see new colors of hair and bodies. I love Macau Jenny, so I would love to see a brown pony.

The thing is... some natural colors can be very... unappealing when put on a toy. Some shades of brown actually look quite... awful, while black is hard to do without it turning to grey... MLP sadly doesn't have 'shading' on the toys while some horse models do and which can play a role in how the colors look.

Seeing as how natural horse colours is what Bonnie Zacherle intended MLP to be when she came up with the toy idea, it would be great to see some made like this.   The line probably wouldn't have gone so far with just real horse colours but it would be great to see some real horse colours produced.

The only ones I can think of are Princess Tiffany and ones like Macau Jenny but that's certainly not a wide release pony.

natural colours are nice - a nice recent example of a natural coloured pony with a colourful mane&tail is the g4 blindbag cherry spices, she's brown with pink/red hair ^^ though sadly she was never made into a brushable as is the fate of many of the blindbags

More colours = more variety. Hasbro should really open itself to use colours that are not pastel or "girly"

Agreed! I think natural colors would be nice to add more variety into the line. The Kirin in g4 were a nice example! Most of them had all earthly tones and it was so nice to see something different!

It would be interesting, however I'd have to see how it's done. I like the idea of a natural colored body with colorful hair. For example, I feel like a pony with a grey body and dark, medium, and light blue hair would be pretty. Especially if it was a sea-themed pony like a dolphin or something. I think a Halloween pony that had a black body and lie purple, green, and orange colored hair would be cute.
I guess it's just colorful hair and a natural body for me  :P

I think LAW summed it up nicely.

I am personally not interested in realistic colours on my MLP. That works well for other lines.

And it's kind of daft to me to say Princess Pearl's colouring is natural because she's a pegasus with tinsel in her hair. How many of those have people seen in fields around lately? Seriously xD.

Also black with rainbow hair colouring is not natural either. It's still fantasy. So that's more about whether to broaden the palette to include black in fantasy colouring, it's not about using natural tones on ponies per se.

I have some twitches about people generalising MLP as being all girly and pastelly and pink. I mean, I wasn't a girly girl and if it had been that kind of toy when I was a kid, I wouldn't have wanted to collect them. And among my childhood earliest ponies were Masquerade - who is definitely not pastel and whose only pink is a tiny bit of symbol paint - and Shady (and I mean the proper hardcore movie shady, who basically sticks two hooves up to anyone who says pink is girly and delicate because it's such an in your face shade.)

Basically across all the gens there are a huge number of colour schemes and designs made possible by the wide use of different colour combinations, pastel and bold shades and so on. The line would not be able to exist or sustain itself if it was all about natural colours. It would have been one set, probably, and that would've been it because it couldn't go anywhere else, not with other realistic horses on the market to trample it out of business.

So anyway, I don't want natural coloured MLP. I don't have a problem with the occasional one, like Snuzzle, incorporating grey, or the black you see in that G3 pony with the blue hair or in Chrysalis (I think it's her?) in G4, but I'm not interested in natural tones otherwise. I like MLP because they're colourful and different and embrace the fantasy concept.

Grey, white and black are fine with me as long as the body or mane color is fancy.
Brown or beige is a no from me.

FiM made me dislike the idea of a naturally colored pony, especially with the weird obsession to make male ponies brown or grey with brown, black or blonde manes and therefore more boring/unremarkable.
You know, because making them colorful like they used to be would make too much sense.

I have no issue with fanchars that are naturally colored. They are more eye pleasing than the ones that are neon colors. And I would actually like the ponies to have natural patterns along with their symbols.
More blazes and stockings would be cute.

I like MLP because they ARE colorful, that said, I would love to see them use mer of other colors than the typical pink. I think they did fairly well on this for G1, but the amount of pink ponies in G3 is... almost painful. I’ve never been a pink pony girl. Not even as a kid. My favourite nirvana pony is Macau Jenny- I like everything about that toy. So, I would be open to more natural ponies, AS long AS they still are MLP ;)

I would LOVE some brown, black, and gray ponies! Seeing fresian, haflingers, lipizzaner inspired ponies would be a dream come true! and  However I would like them to have very colorful symbols that would stand out from their dull colors. Like, Hasbro could do a whole line of realistic colored ponies with rainbow colored symbols.
At the very least, I'd like some pinto and appaloosa markings, even if the colors are unnatural.

Well, I love MLP characters in realistic horse colours but I think the main reason they look appealing is precicely because we're used to seeing MLP in fantasy colours. Ponies like Macau Jenny and the brown version of My Pretty Pony are adorable, but I'm happy that they are exceptions. Most FiM characters in natural colours just look dull and boring to me. I love natural coloured OCs, though. ;)

I'm with Zapper and poniesthatsparkle, I'd love to see more blazes, stockings, and dapple markings on ponies!

I'd enjoy blazes and stockings . . . not on every pony or even on most, but occasionally. :)

Since we're talking about more natural looks, the whole "all draft horses are boys in Ponyland" thing is silly.  So annoying!  Like the people who think all poodles are girls! If they are making a set of draft horse ponies, some should be girls and some should be boys.

I don't know, I kind of think they would not sell well since My Little Pony has always been splashes of color and fantasy.  If they started making things natural the entire concept of MLP might change. I can't decide how I would feel about My Little Pony being just like every little regular horse/pony toy already out there.  I think what makes it unique and a hot item is the fact it isn't like every little horse or pony for sale.  We have plenty of those types of toys already.  So, I would say no on this idea and I wonder what their reasoning is for having not done it.

I like them here and there. I'd never want to have millions of naturally coloured MLPs, because there's other, more realistic horse toys for that. MLP should stick to mostly fantasy colours, IMO. But the occasional more natural colour, or natural body colour + fantasy hair colour (like Cherry Spices, Queen Chrysalis, Snuzzle, etc)... yes please!!

I'd LOVE more horse markings, though - blazes, appaloosa etc. Naturally coloured or otherwise :p again, prolly wouldn't want every other pony to have them, but if they showed up even occasionally that'd be great.. the only MLPs like that I can think of are Bubbles, Seashell, Pipsqueak and Troubleshoes (side note - G4, quit making just the boys more naturally coloured! I like those two, but dangit make some naturally coloured/patterned girls, too!)... oh and Luna? IIRC the black splotches on her flank are actual markings and not part of her symbol, right?

There’s also Sunburst.

I’m also in the camp that prefers ponies multi colored but would love more horse markings.  I wouldn’t mind if there were, say, one set of ponies made that are all natural colors.  I also wouldn’t mind if they found a way to incorporate black, grey and brown in with other fantasy colors.  Like maybe a pony with a brown and blue/teal color scheme.  But I’d still want them to be the exception.  I want the majority of ponies to be rainbow colored.

And I agree with the frustration that G4 colors so many of the boys with muted and muddy colors.

Back to the markings, wouldn’t it also be fun to have markings that aren’t symmetrical?  Like uneven socks/ stockings or not on all four legs.

I don’t think it should ever become the predominant colour scheme, but here and there it’s nice to have toned down colours! Its nice to have exceptions to the norm to add variety.
Though I’ve always liked the more toned down ponies anyway, like Applejack and Butterscotch.

I like the ponies BECAUSE their colors are un-natural.  I also like Fashion Star Fillies and Fantasy Fillies.  Basically, the gaudier the better.  I have had a few people ask me to do customs of their own horses using MLP for the base.  In that case, I understand why someone would be into the real colors.

Nope on natural colors!  If we had natural-colored ponies, they wouldn’t stand out from the other horse toys out there (though, I guess there aren’t as many of them these days).  I dunno, natural colors just bore me to tears.  Give me lots of pastel pinks and neons!  But, I’m a girly-girl, so that’s just my thinking on the subject.

Troubleshoes

I only watched that episode once but I thought Troubleshoes was a regular horse and was really confused. The "YEAH!" pony also just looks like an albino horse. An ugly one

Sunburst is a positive example. He is fantasy colors and has a blaze. His mother has stockings. They are nice designs, imo.

I think blazes are a possibility because they are easy to apply on a toy. The rest is too expensive for Cheapsbro.

AJ should have been a draft like her brother. Or at the very least have the feathered hooves.

Oh yes! I'm completely on board with natural colored horses. There's so many colors that could be used.
Black, bay, chestnut, blue roan, red roan, grey, dun, buckskin, mulberry grey, flaxen chestnut, grulla… all of those would be awesome colors on a pony (just to name a few). And then there's horse patterns like pinto and appaloosa. I wouldn't like to see a complete switch to natural colors so maybe only a few ponies would be made this way. Maybe they could have stripes of color in their hair like in Horseland? I dunno. But yeah I love the idea of having naturally colored my little ponies.

Also if there would be no naturally colored ponies I would still like to see real horse pattern on ponies. This wouldn't be so terrible since there's already some g1s that are made this way. For example, Cotton Candy is an appaloosa and Seashell and Bubbles have stars on their foreheads.

I love G4 Sunburst, he has an awesome design!  Real pony markings + fantasy colors are a great combo in my book.

I don't even mind his beard because it's so much like the traditional unicorn beard (goat-like).

Same.
And in general I wouldn't mind pony beards if they styled them more like that. I would also love to see braided tails on male ponies. Most unicorns would look great with a long braided tail and Sunburst beard. Imagine if a brushie had a rooted goat beard... cute!

Doesn't make that much sense when you look at what sells and what doesn't and what are your franchise core values. Toy companies are super rigid like that.
Remember when they released Maude Pie and she was covered in colorful flowers? Then when they released her again it was in a big set with other colorful ponies and "fan faves".
And when they did Octavia she was with her doll version.
Hasbro simply doesn't believe that girls want grey ponies. They let the writers introduce these characters for storytelling purposes but they have long stopped releasing every character they have on their cartoons.

I have this issue with the show in general. That it's kind of its own thing.
The movie was deliberately made to sell new toys and it shows. All new characters that appeared got some kind of merch.

I would love natural coloured ponies AS WELL as the beautiful ones we have. Just look at some of the ones Dark Horse Customs does, as a random example. There are some for sale on eBay right now, one in particular is a gorgeous dapple grey rearing unicorn. And think about Gypsy Vanner horses, they are so lovely as well. As a life-long horse lover I don't find any horse colour boring or ugly you see. However I am not looking at this from a perspective of 'what will sell' for Hasbro, but rather what I would like to have on my own shelves at home.

I wish they'd do more unicorn-style 'beards'/goatees. Not much of a fan of ponies w/ facial hair (it's fine once in a while, but G4 went way overboard on it IMO) but that would be nice.

And when they did Octavia she was with her doll version.

...and had pink hair streaks. Because they had to get pink in there somewhere, apparently :P

Some of my fave ponies are natural colors. I love white ponies, Snuzzle's simplistic grey coloring, and I legitimately like lavender ponies that have turned grey over the years. I love the traditional pastel colored ones as well, but I feel like neutral body colors can just really make the vibrant hair or symbol colors pop even more.

I would love a couple more natural body colors, Snuzzle and Jenny are such gems! But not like a ton, just a few others. Natural manes on the other hand would make for some interesting combos. I adore Butterscotch, Rosette and Crumpet's manes and would consider those to look more natural. Grey hair, more pure whites, black, brown, (natural) red, blond, salt and pepper...

I love the idea of natural colored ponies but I also love the idea of mixing real world pony marks and coat patterns with the neon MLP colors. I've seen pictures of the G4 characters  from a semi-reboot of the series with different real coat patterns around in fandom but I'm not sure if they are real or fan made?

I would love to see natural colours/patterns on MLP.  They could always add streaks of colour in the mane or tail if they are concerned that natural colours would be too "blah".
