Title: Who was the first pony you bought as an adult?
Post by: Noasar on October 08, 2018, 12:24:40 PM
So I was thinking back to when I first started collecting as an adult (well, teenager) and who was the first pony I bought.

I got into collecting because I found out that my Mum had taken my ponies to a car boot sale when I was about 13 and sold them all! I was so upset. I had some ponies that are now very sought after - Nurse Tenderheart with hat, Glow n Shows etc but I didn’t know this at the time obviously! So the first thing I did was go on eBay and try to search for them to try and buy some of them back.

This led me down a deep pony internet wormhole where I ended up here and addicted to searching eBay to replace my long lost ponies!

The first pony I bought from eBay as an adult was Cherries Jubilee! I saw her and remember thinking she was just soooo pretty and I had to have her. She wasn’t even a pony I had as a kid, but for a long time she was one of my favourites and I ended up buying many more ponies from eBay with money from my part time job after that.

The irony is, now I don’t really like poor Cherries Jubilee at all! I don’t have her in my collection any more, but she was the pony that got me into collecting as an adult so I do have a bit of a soft spot for her!

What was the first pony you bought as a ‘grown up’? And why?

Well when G3 came out, I got a 4 pack with Stardasher, Denim Blue, Rainbowdash and Sparkleworks as a gift. I was also buying for my daughter when she was old enough to start playing with toys.

The first one I bought for myself was Styling Starcatcher. I found her at the swapmeet. I bought her because she was pretty and only $3.

I bought Galaxy, Speedy, and Flower Dream at the same time, but Galaxy arrived first! So I'd consider her my first pony I bought as an adult. ;) I bought her because I love her colours and she's one of my favourite characters from My Little Pony 'n' Friends!

I think it was Baby Moondancer from Ebay.  Why is because I'd always wanted her.  I had only seen Escape from Catrina once as a child, and Baby Moondancer just became more and more important to me.  I thought I would never see that special again.

Pretty sure that it was a scruffy looking Glory from a flea market, bought at the same time as a bunch of He-man and She-ra figures.

I honestly can't tell. During my mid-late~ish teenage years, I was asking my parents to pick up ponies for me in flea markets, then stopped for a couple of years and then started collecting again, going to the flea markets myself and buying ponies like crazy. Now I'm 20 so that's not like I'm an adult adult.. heh.  :P So yeah, I'm only able to tell my childhood herd apart from all the others, but I can't precisely tell who were my first ponies "as an adult".

Powder.

I'd just nostalgically pulled out my childhood collection after years of storage and it didn't take long before curiosity got the better of me and I started investigating where 'vintage' ponies were at nowadays... and then looking at what might be on the local online auction site...

Powder just captivated me for some reason, and I thought, what harm can it do? Adding just one more pretty pony to my herd...?

Nearly 500 ponies later....  XD

It's a bit hazy after Powder.... but the herd grew rather quickly!

I think it was Snuzzle. I never had Snuzzle as a kid. I thought, get one or two ponies, just a few, oh how silly I was. But, yeah, I had a wish list since I was six. I never forgot a pony I didn't get, haha. I still have backcard cutouts of the ponies I needed. Snuzzle, Twilight, Cherries Jubilee, Powder, Gusty, Sparkler, those were all part of my first hunts.

I bought a huge bag of G1 ponies at a thrift store- I guess I was technically an adult. 18.  I was so freaking elated.  I don't remember who all was in there, but it was a HUUUUGE bag.  There were ponies in there I didn't even know existed (of course I do now)

G1 Powder, found her in a thrift store, just before G3s came out.

Really depends on what time frame you identify as 'adult'.
I collected most of my G1's from early teens all the way through well into adulthood, so it's pretty tough to say.

I just mean as in...not a kid, when I guess it would no longer be acceptable for you to buy a children’s toy! I was 13 when I hit up eBay for the first time, so not an adult either but it was the first time I was consciously looking for vintage MLP, not just being bought them as a child.

This is me also.  Once I got into collecting as an “adult” in my late teens there was a lot of garage sells and flea markets where I or my parents picked them up.  For me this was in the lat nineties.  I was not at all interested in G2.  But I will say that I was very excited when g3 was announced and looking at the first characters and picking out the one that I wanted to purchase as my first pony to buy new in store since childhood.  That would be Wisteria.

Finding baby YoYo at a thrift store in 1995/96? when I was in college started it all for me.

I guess that would be Twinkler and Curly Locks. I just loved their pose and colors. Sadly they were my last pony purchase as a teenager. Then I went through the huge pony purge but I somehow managed to keep these two girls for whatever reason. I wish I would of kept my baby surprise but I didn't. I wish I could of said they restarted my collection but it wasnt until I was in my 30s did I take up collecting again.

That doesn't really help... I mean I was getting ponies throughout my childhood, teenagehood, and adulthood, and there's overlap between those being bought for me and those I sought out myself.  It's never really stopped, nor was it ever deemed unacceptable for me to like toys at any point. I guess first second hand ponies I bought personally and remember, does that count?  That was probably Baby Blossom and Firefly.  Baby Milky Way (25¢) and the Sweet Celebrations family (3$) were also up there in the early second-hand finds.

I poured over the first images of the G3's deciding what I wanted, and I was SURE I was going to buy Kimono.
I ended up buying Pinkie Pie! Her in the shy pose was just adorable.

I was 20 when I first discovered ponies! My first ever pony was Baby Ribbon, but I didn't actually buy her as she was a gift from my girlfriend (because I'd been ohhing and ahhing over her recently rediscovered childhood ponies!).
Then I got a tired-looking G3 Petal Blossom for free (she had belonged to one of my mum's friend's kids who had outgrown her; the friend was taking her to the charity shop on top of a bag of other stuff and my mum was like, "Hey, Shaz would like that!" Poor Petal Blossom was covered in marker and nail polish and had a haircut, so she became my first ever restoration project), and a Ty G4 Rainbow Dash as a gift.
So I think the first pony I actually bought and paid for myself was G4 Cheerilee, who I found one day while shopping in Tesco's. Then I went mad buying G4 blindbags, and then a few months later I made my way to eBay and bought G1 Baby Yo-Yo....and after that there was just no stopping me! :)

I got into ponies with G4, around age 18. So my first pony I bought was a G4, Rarity :)
My first older gen pony after I found the Arena and became interested in the older generations, was G3 Moondancer! I totally fell in love with her and quickly understood why people collect these beautiful critters

I think it was Winter Minty in 2008. If she really came out in Winter 2008 then I would have been 18. But I don't remember much. I think it was at a Toys R Us.

I started collecting in 2005 by digging out my childhood ponies from storage - luckily Mum had been strictly against selling any of our most beloved toys! Together with my sister's ponies they were a herd of about 10, mostly G1 and some G2. (I ended up selling the G2 ponies later, which I now regret... they were complete with accessories, after all!)

Sadly I can't remember who was the first G1 pony I bought for my collection, but the first G3 one was Bowtie (and I got Seaspray for my birthday shortly after). I'm not even sure if my first G1 came before or after these G3 ponies - probably after, since I could just walk to the store to get the G3s! But I also joined the Finnish pony community around the same time so I'm sure some G1s soon followed. I find it odd I have no memory of my first vintage pony purchase even though G1s were always my primary target of interest...

I've been getting/buying MLP since 1983/4 - I never really stopped, actually I'd point out that in the USA hasbro stopped selling them to me where I had to transition to finding second hand ponies.

In 83-4 I would have been around 11/12, when I bought my first ponies.

I've technically had more years with MLP in my life than without (35 years).

So 11/12 years without ponies, they rest with ponies. So I have no way of knowing what would qualify my first purchase as an adult.

The first pony I bought as an adult was Posey, she was always my favourite as a kid. I'd been hoping to find my childhood ponies and never did (they'd probably been given away at some point) and I wanted to replace them. That broadened to collecting pretty much any ponies that had some appeal for a while, then I pared down my collection again and just kept the replacements for my long lost childhood favourites. I'm much more disciplined with buying ponies now (not least because the ones I want seem to have gone very scarce all of a sudden!)

I think my first as an adult was Little Flitter.  She was fav of one of my cousins and one day when she took her to school, another student stole her.   The Summer Wings weren't in stores anymore and there was no internet so no way to replace her.
I had the chance to buy one from a Texas seller on the MLP Trading post and later another Little Flitter on Ebay so I could have one too.   Gave the first one as a high school graduation present to my cousin and she still has her to this day.  :)

I also stopped collecting at 11 and started again at 12 or 13, first through hasbro and then at carboot sales from July 1995 (I have the date written in my diary!). So if that counts, it was Lickety Split and Parasol. I was super excited by both as they were proper old ponies I remembered fondly from being a young kid, and neither of which I had ever had.

If we're talking about online - my first pony from online transacting was a trade for Mimic, but the first pony I actually bought online was adult Sea Pony Sea Breeze. She cost $5 with $4 for shipping. I kept the ebay receipt. I had to send $ in cash for her. That was 1998. I was 16 :)

Beyond that, as an actual "adult" - not a clue. I was already on the rocky road long before then...

When I started to collect as an adult besides the ponies from my youth it was at the point that G3 came out. I already knew my way on ebay, so I bought 2 huge g1 lots as a starter. Mostly common ponies I didn't had back then or were not available over here. I think one of the sippin soda ponies was in there too. And from G3 I got myself Kimono :)

It sucks that the pony got stolen though. That almost happened to me with my childhood Snowflake. Innocent childhood me didn't realise it at the time, but older adult me since did. Basically I used to take ponies to school too - and bad things sometimes did happen to them - but Snowflake just kind of vanished. And I couldn't find her. And then a few days later the mother of my "friend" (who stopped being my friend not long after because she was stopping me being friends with other people) came up to the school gate with this pony and asked my Mum if it was mine, because it had my name on the hooves. At the time I thought, that's weird, I never took Snowflake to her house. But that's where she was. I was lucky I got mine back. I feel so bad for the cousin who lost her pony :(

Worst that happened to my ponies at school was a broken earring and some broken hooves. The earring still bugs me though, because the pony was in my bag but the earring wasn't. Someone either took her out and played with her and broke her behind my back, or they did it on purpose :( School was not a great place to take ponies.

Now I'm owning a small army. Definitely still my favorite pony.

Princess Tiffany as a Freshman in college.  I ordered her and a handful of other ponies that I had wanted in childhood that my cousin had.  I think Baby Surprise joined her soon after, as I always paired them as mom and baby as a kid.

Silly Sunshine. I think I found her in a drug store. All my childhood ponies (and my sister's) were boxed up in my sister's basement. I was newly back stateside and when I saw my first G3 pony, they looked so much more like the ponies I remembered from my childhood that, on the spur of the moment, I bought her and popped her on a bookshelf.

G3 it was Kimono from Toys R Us, and she was my introduction back into the brand. For G1, that was NSS Cherries Jubilee. She was a thrift store find, at a little family run thrift shop in a rural town. My roommate at the time must have thought I was insane, for asking to buy her (it was a spur of the moment stop and I didn't have money on me).

Boy I cant remember who was the first G1 pony that I bought as an adult. I remember seeing the G3 ponies when they came out in the store. I did not know anything about them either! I was walking around the toy isle and came across them and about died of happiness! I was pretty poor with money and had to wait to buy them. But when I had extra cash I ran right back to that store and bought the G3 ponies that first came out! After that I went online and looked to see what was out there! I was in heaven!!!!! I was able to get a few G1 but I cant remember who they are anymore. I no longer have them either. I was 19 when I bought my first G3 ponies! :) I added a few here and there when I could afford it! And when I found this site in 2007, I just went crazy!  :)

Stripes!  Some time in high school I remember being on eBay, and although I have no memory of deliberately searching for My Little Ponies I somehow found myself on a listing for Stripes.  Seeing her photos gave me this amazing rush of nostalgia, and I was desperate to buy her.  She was favourite pony growing up, and so it seemed only fitting that she was the first pony on my new herd as an adult.

I believe it was G1 Locket. She was the first pony I found 'as an adult' with the notion of having ponies to collect, not play with - I was about 16.  I found her in an antique shop. I think she was only a couple dollars.

I can't remember. I just know I started collecting with the intent of getting all the ponies I played with as a kid. I'm sure I went after lots, because that's the way I roll.

It was however the 25th anniversary set that we found at a discount store that drew me in to buy ponies again. But I believe my mom bought that for me, hahaha.

I really really wish I could remember!     There really was no gap for me between buying them as a kid to play with and buying them as an adult to collect.  There were times when my focus was on other things and not laser focused on MLP, but I never really stopped.  The point where I stopped playing with toys and started collecting toys is too gradual to pinpoint a time or a pony.  But the thing is, I can distinguish between my "childhood collection" and later ones, the ones I consider childhood ponies are G1s that were bought for me new in stores, then I started buying them myself from flea markets and garage sales and thrift stores.  But even though I can tell which ponies were bought second hand, I can't for the life of me remember which pony I bought first second hand, that time in my late childhood/early teens all blurs together.

I remember clearly buying Brush n Grow Curly Locks and a couple other ponies at a garage sale.  They weren't the first second hand ponies I'd ever gotten but it's the earliest I remember.  I can't remember who the others were but Curly Locks stood out because she was the first Brush n Grow Pony I'd ever seen, I had fun pulling her tail out and twisting her head to pull it back in.  Seems to me I got a Fairy Tail Bird at the same time - I also collect those - but I can't remember for sure.  At that time I used to go to flea markets and garage sales with my best friend and we collected ponies together.  When she finally lost interest they all became mine.  XD

I remember kinda getting out of ponies for a bit in my mid teens.  I say kinda because I never really got tired of ponies, my focus was just on other things going on in my life and other interests.  I remember being brought sharply back to ponies when they were brought up on an unrelated message board.  That's when I found out there were other collectors and found a MLP mailing list, found ebay, and did some trading.  That's when I started picking up every pony I found in the wild, including duplicates, so I could trade them.  I guess that's when I started collecting for collecting's sake.  But still, I can't remember who I got first at that time.

Peachy.  :) It was 2011 and I was 21 years old. I had just realized how many different ponies there are and bought one of the cheapest G1 ponies I found from eBay. I still probably overpaid, I remember she wasn't in the best condition. But I didn't care! I was so happy to get my first pony.

Baby Cotton Candy for a whole $2 on ebay with a money order back in 1997:p

Still have her, though she wasn’t in the greatest condition to begin with.  She was my first ebay purchase ever!  She was one of the ponies I missed out on as a kid.

My first ponies I bought as a 17 year old were Blosson and Cotton Candy.  It was in 2001. I had gotten an MLP sweatshirt at Hot Topic with these two ponies on it and that’s how my collection started. I had about 7 as a child but I didn’t think about them until I saw that sweatshirt.
