Title: Is there an online referance for matching G2 crystals?
Post by: SeashellnBubbles on February 03, 2014, 01:07:23 PM
I know that the Swarovski Crystals are supposed to be an exact match for G2 eye crystals, but i've not been able to find reference to the size or color matches for perfect results. Does anyone know if such a list exists, or maybe i could start a reference here for people to look at? Anyone who has experience on the best way to place and glue them in place, that'd be great, too! Thanks all :)

The size is the called an "SS12" I believe. I havent ever seen an online reference for the colours however. I am sure that would be useful :)

Crystal clear eyes are obviously the crystal and crystal AB Swarovski colors (The AB is for the rainbow effect - AM means Aurora Borealis) :) Here are some other exact matches:

It's been years since I've matched those and my G2 grew a lot so I'll look up if there are any more eye/gem colors and match them to my Swarovski crystals and let you know if you'll want :)

I personally used any super glue I had on hand and either just use a small stick to place them in the eye (the same which I use to apply some nail decoration). If I needed to get rid of an eye gem I used a small needle to pop it out. It's really simple and easy :)

Sure :) As I said, i'll take a look on my other G2's tomorrow morning (it's after midnight in Poland  ) to see if I'm missing any and if anything, I'll update the pictures.

Oh, thank you TSU and Hathorcat! (and Seashellnbubbles for starting the thread). Fabulous info. I had purchased a few crystals from Wrenniepooh a long time ago, and since I'm continually adding to my G2s (and of course finding some missing eye gems), wasn't sure what size *or* colors to go for to keep around.

There's a craft glue I've used for eye gems before, Tombow Mono Aqua glue, and it's fantastic for the purpose. It holds well, dries quickly, doesn't drip, and never takes off any paint if you want to remove the eyegem again later.  :)

That's funny because MlP Preservation Project was where i was hoping to find this info! I'm glad it will be kept there for posterity, and thanks so much TSU...perhaps now I can go through and make a list of which pony, which gem...I can't wait to see how many of each is out there :)

As I suspected, there is one more color for the gems. I tried to match the color to Swarovski crystals and I'm kind of torn.

Fuchsia is more purple, while ruby is more red. Personally, I would go with ruby just because the color seems like a bit better match for me, but on the pictures it looks like fuchsia is more suited :cloud: I was busy this morning and around noon and missed the sun sadly. I'll try to see if the other ponies besides Diamond Glow rave their eyes more red-like or pore purple-like for a better match. It might be that the use of purple and blue in the design of Diamond Glow's eyes are making the gem look more like fuchsia in color.

Wow, thank you for this! Is there a place where we can purchase just a selection at a time, or not really? I think I remember looking before and only finding packs of 20 or so crystals that weren't cheap.

It had been years since I've purchased some of those - Wreeniepooh had them on sale for a great price. Also you might try ebay - there are often mixes of Swarovski rhinestones and you can select your own colors. I know I had purchased a lot of crystals that way so you might try and browse it.

The babies have smaller crystals in their eyes :cloud: Sadly I've never had one of them missing their eye gems (Or I passed them to others) so I'm not sure what size they are :/

You can by them here: www.artbeads.com (http://www.artbeads.com/swarovski-flatbacks-rhinestones-ss12.html).

You can by exactly the amount you want and they only cost a few cents each.

I think I linked to the right crystals (SS12 Swarovski). But if not, you can just search the site. They have a ton of sizes, colors, and cuts to offer.

I love that you can order the exact size, color, cut, and amount that you want and they only charge a few cents each.

I was going to recommend artbeads.com as well - they are great for this kind of thing.

Arg! i just placed an order at fire mountain gems. The smallest packets they had were 12. For one of them i had to get a larger number, forget what it was now. I have a Springdy missing an eye gem. Her eyes look dark red, so i ordered a few different reds---red magma, dark siam amd siam. I figure i can use the extras of the ones that aren't the right color (hopefully one of them is!! ) for craft or customizing projects. Does anyone know what color works for springdy for certain? Also, i decided to try some PP18s as well, because the eye sockets actually aren't flat on the inside, and it sticks in my mind the ones i had from wrennie pooh )to repair hip holly) were pointed, not flat.  It's been a while though, so I might be wrong about that. *makes note of new resource site*

The flat ones are a bit harder to glue (you have to use the right amount of it) but it's plausible to use them. but I agree that the ones which are pointed are better suited. thanks for the tip!

Springdy has the same eye match as Diamond Glow pictured above. i'll take a pic of them in the morning as i'll be at home then. It's definitely neither of the colors you picked I'm afraid :/ I think that the closest match is fuchsia or ruby.

ETA: Here are the promised pictures. Again compared to fuchsia and ruby colors:

I still would go for ruby because it gives the redder deep color of the pink crystal, even though at first glance and in a bit of a shadow, fuchsia is a bit better match. It's really hard to judge and I guess I would have to have the crystals popped out of the eyes and compare them for the Swarovski counterparts to see... Sorry, I can't help much further :(

You are right that the eyes perhaps suit a pointed back one better but I always struggle with anything other than a flat back. They just seem to sit neater and also when hot gluing there is a better surface area, less likely to leak out :P But I think it all comes down to individual preference.

Thanks for the images, though! Even winding up with what will surely be the wrong color for Springdy, at least i have a better idea what to get and a place to order smll amounts now. (Oh, and someone to ask for eye colors lol)

Sure! I have a very wide selection of Swarovski crystals and have almost all G2's (minus the variants :drunk: ) so I'll be glad to help if you'll want to see any color matches! Feel free to PM me when needed as well.
