Title: *Slams Hands on Table* Let's Talk Peroxide Cream EDIT: Of the Hydrogen Variety?
Post by: tailrustedtealeaf on September 15, 2019, 07:21:41 AM
I've certainly been seeing it suggested more around and around. Testimonials? Anyone wary of it? Anyone swear by it?
...Anyone know if it can cause lasting damage...
Edited my title to show I meant HYDROGEN Peroxide Cream. Forgot the name of the acne cream stuff, whoopsie.

Do NOT use it.  It is bad.

The active ingredient can keep working for years--yes, even if you wash the pony afterwards.

Meaning after a few YEARS it can suddenly start bleaching a pony's body.

A really unfortunate surprise if the pony has changed owners during that time.

^ Not my pics but I feel the original owners would want this info spread.

Edit:  Forgot to add . . . if the peroxide pony gets in direct contact with other ponies, the other ponies can also developed bleached spots.

Ahhh thank you! I considered trying it on my sugarberry, because nothing else has worked on her and I don't think she can be sunfaded, but I could swear someone on here posted pictures of how peroxide cream had bleached a ponys vinyl. And I was right! these are exactly the pictures I was thinking of. I think I'll just live with the highlighter on her face.

Or you can paint over it! Although it can be difficult in certain areas.

Baby Lickety has a cool tie-dyed look, but I wouldn't ruin a pony trying to recreate it.  :(

We can talk about how bad it is and how people need to stop using it...

Also how it transfers so if you use it on one pony it can maybe spread to another.

And how it can take years to show damage so you might have a ticking time bomb pony in your collection.

My sister's Daisy Dancer went in the attic perfect and came out with blotches on her stomach :/

Blue ponies seem to be the worst affected but given how unstable we now KNOW pony plastic is, it would be idiotic to use anything chemical on a pony without running extensive tests first and even MORE idiotic to use this kind of cream.

I suspect people will say there are different kinds of cream but frankly, if one isn't safe, there's no reason to suppose others will be.

Better to stay clear of chemicals. Period.

Is peroxide cream the same as acne cream? I thought they were two different things.

I was under the impression that benzoyl peroxide was an ingredient in acne creams. It sounds that way when I Google for acne cream ingedients.

Benzoyl Peroxide is a component in acne cream and causes those contagious bleaching effects. Avoid at all costs Acne Cream / Benzoyl Peroxide on ponies/plastis Source on use of Benzoil Peroxide (https://www.drugs.com/cdi/benzoyl-peroxide-cream.html)

Hydrogen Peroxide cream is just the same as an OxyClean bath, which and has been proved harmless so far. Source on Hydrogen Peroxide gel composition and use (https://www.using-hydrogen-peroxide.com/hydrogen-peroxide-gel.html); Source on OxyClean composition (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OxiClean)

Yes, those two components have Peroxide, but that doesn't make them the same thing at all, they won't act the same at all. I noticed people get them mixed up. Which is okay, to be honest. Chemistry can be tricky.

So, the term "Peroxide cream" doesn't give exactly what you're talking about, which could cause problems depending on what people interpreted from reading it. You need to mention if it's hydrogen peroxide cream, or Benzoyl peroxide cream.

When I googled "peroxide cream" literally the first thing that comes up is Benzoyl Peroxide, which is an active ingredient in acne cream (or most acne creams).... which in the past I've heard collectors say stay away from due to the bleaching over time.

I don't know if I've ever seen Hydrogen Peroxide cream.. but then again I don't know what brands it would be marked as xD

I watched an old computer restorer use hydrogen peroxide cream to evenly fix yellowed keys and plastic components.

Great point about hydrogen peroxide.  I don't think it's usually an active ingredient in creams though, I feel like it's mostly used in more "liquidy" products?

In any case, always check the active ingredients before putting anything harsher than regular shampoo or soap on a pony. :)

Ah I see... I wonder if I could do  that on my poor little baby moondancer.. she has had a hydrogen peroxide treatment before but I doubt she will ever lose her splotches as they returned several months later...

Hydrogen Peroxide cream is safe, it's basically Hydrogen Peroxide diluted in a gel substance so it stays where it's applied.

I guess it could be used on ponies that are blacklisted from the Oxyclean bath treatment, such as Glitter symbols, Princess Ponies and Twinkle Eyed, as you'd just need to apply the cream only where it's necessary and avoid the symbol and eye paints. I guess we'd need to experiment.

It's specifically Benzoyl peroxide you need to watch out for. That's what acne medicine contains usually. Hydrogen peroxide is not the same thing and is typically safe to use in all kinds of applications since it's water soluble. Benzoyl peroxide forms a barrier where it's applied which is why it can still bleach things after many years.

edit: Oops, looks like that was covered already :P

You can buy hydrogen peroxide cream from hair supply shops usually. It’s great.

I agree with a big NO to acne cream.

I used it on a yellow pony once about 15 years ago (EU baby Splashes) to remove some ink and it worked well. She still looks fine, with no bleaching. But she stays the hell away from my other ponies XD

I always say pass on acne creme. That's my Tuneful pictured. Poor thing. Have fun with h202 soaks though but watch out with ponies with sugarberry color hair and neon yellow...

Benzyl Peroxide is the active ingredient in many acne creams.  It fades ponies so is generally only something to use as a last resort if at all.  It also fades fabrics.

Hydrogen Peroxide is what people often use for cleaning out small wounds and it's the active ingredient in OxiClean.  So far in my years of using it I haven't had any bad side effects other than reds and pinks fading which is actually due to sun exposure.  Chartreuse hair bleeds when exposed to it.  I've heard reports that it can harden a pony's body, but I think that's just it cleaning out any leaching plasticizer.  It is safe for vinyl (the pony's body), but destroys nylon after prolonged exposure.

Yes it is. Look at the composition, it should be hydrogn peroxide and a creamy medium. Works the same way as oxyclean.
