Title: Which G1 Playset is the most classic and iconic?
Post by: Leave a Whisper on February 07, 2019, 08:15:38 AM
For simplicity sake, I'm only counting buildings, so things like the Waterfall, Birthday/Slumber Party Packs and the Baby Buggy aren't going to be featured. If there's country specific playsets I don't know about, it'd be delightful if you showed them off. :)

Another poll can be done for the non-buildings.

Tough choice!

I opted for Dream Castle as is was a super Christmas present for me - lots of bits for the ponies to hide in, treasure boxes, Spike etc. Nice and big, too!

Almost put down Grooming Parlour (UK) as it was the first pony carry-case that I owned, I loved how you could squeeze in a couple of ponies after playing and carry them away! Also it was fun putting Twinkles the cat in the basket fora hat-wearing Peachy to carry!

Show Stable - my friend had this and I envied her - it was a classic in that it went straight to the "equine roots" in that it involved jumps, trophies, rosettes etc.

I voted PE because I was obsessed with the comic ad as a kid, the "every pony dreams of living in paradise" one I posted in a previous thread. But I think it's also because I didn't get it, as it didn't play a huge role in UK comics or anything.

In my childhood, my favourite of my playsets was the nursery with DC second. And those two are arguably more iconic but for some reason I take them for granted, probably because I owned them.

Weirdly for me, too, because Ice Cream Wars was one of the few eps I had on VHS as a kid and because the baby blue ribbon game was a pullout in a pony comic, the Satin Slipper sweet shoppe also had a kind of weird legendary not real but maybe status in my childhood as well. I didn't believe in it actually existing, though - just, when I found out it did, it was more like, ah, now that episode makes more sense, than wow!

My vote is still for PE though. And here's the main reason why. This of all the adverts in all the comics for MLP in the UK sticks with me the most.

Also one of my friends did own PE, so I did get to play with it sometimes...it wasn't one of those playsets that seemed awesome but wasn't in real life. It was awesome in real life too ;)

But it would've been more awesome with Paradise :'(. Thirty years and I'm still not over that.

I had both the UK playsets the school and the kitchen from new, the Kitchen for christmas when I was ten I think. And yet I never consider either of them that iconic, despite the fact the school is the base setting for MLP Tales and probably deserves more attention ;)

I think I would say the Nursery because it's fairly recognizable as MLP.

I'm gonna go with Paradide Estate. Not having any of the playsets as a kid and being an avid cartoon fan, PE stuck around longer then DC did for me personally. Its huge, its memorable, its a holy grail for a lot of people and its all around awesome.

It depends! If we're talking about "My Little Pony" in general, then I'd probably say Dreamcastle and Paradise Estate (and maybe the Lullabye Nursery too!).

However, I didn't have any of these when I was a child, so for me personally the Brush Me Beautiful Boutique, Show Stable (2nd edition) and the kitchen are probably most iconic. ^.^

I only ever had the Pretty Parlor.  But, I put dream castle as it was in the background of a lot of artwork.  Even if I didn't immediately see a pony, I still knew what it was.

Hmm . . . I would say Dream Castle!  It showed up in the specials and movie, and was also in quite a few storybooks.

I picked Dream Castle. I've never owned it, but it's what I immediately think of when I think of 'My Little Pony buildings'.

@Taffeta I love that PE ad. :lovey: :lovey: Is that Majesty watching TV?

For me the most iconic playset is Dream Castle even though I never owned it as a child. I only had Lullabye Nursery and The Baby Bonnet School of Dance.  My best friend had all of the expensive toys including multiplies of some things and she had a Dream Castle but I barely remember playing with it once. She was kind of a snob and got jealous if I got the same exact toys she had.

I always think of Paradise Estate because that's the playset I see everyone drool over. I'm sure more people would recognize the Dream Castle because that's when the toys got popular.
The Pretty Parlor is nice but they've used the same playset for a Littlest Pet Shop release.

I was torn between Dream Castle and Paradise Estate but in the end I just went with PE because I overall like its design, it actually looks like a pretty nice place to live in :)

The Pretty Parlor is the most iconic to me followed closely by the stables. I loved the Lullabye Nursery too, but I am not sure how iconic it was. Never had the Dream Castle or played with it.

OMG for the life of me ... I cant decide!!
Well, in the end I picket Show Stable, because it was one of Germanys most common playsets back then and almost all memories I have from my childhood involve the Show Stable <3 It was a hard decision, Dream Castle came on close second!

I voted for Dream Castle because the first accessories I ever had came from it.

The dream castle because when I was a child I wanted it alot. My parents agreed to get it for me because I went through a whole bunch of tests at the hospital at the time. I was very happy when I got it and it was the most played with as a kid.

I vote Dream Castle.  I didn’t have it as a child but I adored RAMC and even now when I want to paint a pony backdrop Dream Castle is the go to feature I want to include.

I did have the Nursery and that one comes in second for me

I voted for Dream Castle, but one of my biggest earliest memory was for my birthday for whatever reason Dad took me to Woolworths (out of town) and I picked out the show Stable.

I really can't remember if we made the special trip for the show stable, I almost have a feeling we did because I probably told him I had seen it in that store. Back in the day it wasn't like every single store on the planet carried every single MLP item. So there would have been no show stable say, in my town back then at any of the stores.

So I have a feeling dad took me to get me the show stable for my birthday. I remember standing in the isle with the pony section and him saying is that what you want. And I remember saying yes. And then I remember getting in the truck and holding the box in my lap all the way home. At the time it was my very first pony house/playset. So when I got home i distinctly remember cleaning out my closet, and setting the stable up in the foor of closet and putting all my ponies in there with said stable. My first ponies were Moondancer and Firefly but I can't remember who else I had but I'm thinking at most it was probably 5-10 maybe if that. I was sorta setting up that I was going to collect all the ponies on the backcard, etc.  :P

Yea, the sure don't fit in the closet anymore (LOL)

I got to say Kitchen and the Petit Pony Castle since they were my first big sets :P

Dream Castle is the one I immediately think of when I think "MLP playset". Then Paradise Estate.

While Paradise Estate is my favorite playset, I don't think it's the most iconic (although it's certainly up there, especially for those who grew up with the G1 Movie/TV series). It would probably have to be Dream Castle. Even if a pink castle is pretty generic, and there are other classic buildings with more unique looks that are specific to MLP (the Lullabye Nursery comes to mind), the Dream Castle stuck around and seems to be the one most people remember. It's probably no coincidence that every MLP generation has had a castle playset at some point.

I think it's gotta be Dream Castle. When we first meet the Little Ponies in Firefly's Adventure/ Rescue at Midnight Castle, they all come out of Dream Castle. I might be a little biased as I think it was probably my favorite playset as a kid (though I loved Lullabye Nursery and the Sweet Shop too). But honestly everyone loves castles right?

Dream Castle I think-

I can see why that Retro toy company is focusing on the show stable though, size and price.  I can't imagine what a set like that would cost today, with the increase in production costs and shipping. Probably like $200.

LadyMoondancer may have the right idea though- we should drop hints on "World's Smallest" to do the Castle!  Imagine a lil castle for your teeny weenie mini classic ponies to frolic in  :frolic: :frolic:  God that would be so cute it kills me.

It's actually "what about the Hippodrome", though. :P  A palindrome is a word that reads the same backwards or forwards.  (Like Eevee.)

The Hippodrome was a Roman or Greek colesium where they had horse races, IIRC.  (Hippo in Greek means horse . . . Hippopotamus means water-horse! :) )
