Title: Steven Universe
Post by: Gator on May 08, 2018, 07:17:49 PM
I think the old Steven thread is locked, but you guys, did you see the latest episode?  Oh my gosh!  Pink Diamond!  Pearl!  Rose!  And then the teaser for the upcoming Garnett conflict!  Can't wait!

Yes...!  I need more now.  lol!

I honestly hadn't been watching in a long time since we gave up cable TV, well, and all TV.  But I found I could watch online and after seeing spoilers I *had* to see the latest two episodes!

I was about to drop that show (despite thinking it looks beautiful) because of the fake-outs and irratic schedule. But my interest got peaked again! Finally that cat is out of the bag. I assume there will be a season 6 now.

It sounds like this was planned since the start. That kind of renders some arguments the more critical side of the fanbase had towards the show moot. If only they could fix that gosh darn scheduling problem...
I'm both intrigued and upset by it. I'd love to see what comes out of it!

Honestly, the SU fandom is like FiM fandom. Some of them take the show so seriously they forget it's a kids cartoon.
What kind of amuses me tho is that "skinny Rose" is canon now.

I love the show, but am not involved with the fandom at all, lol.  I honestly think that's the best way to enjoy most shows.  Otherwise everything just ends up being a series of super-serious arguments between fans over a cartoon.  No fun!

Anyway . . . (Spoiler-y fan theories ahead)

Man, no wonder Pearl has been falling apart since Rose left.  I had suspected for a long time that Pearl was Pink Diamond's pearl, because the other Pearls we've seen have been the attendants of other Diamonds.  But I figured it was a case of "Pearl escaped from Pink Diamond, was taken in by Rose, and since she was feeling lost she began hero-worshipping Rose."  Little did I know that things were way more complex than that!  I think Pearl was genuinely happy to escape from the constraints of her expected role as a servant . . . but she kept Rose at the center of her world, now viewing herself as a knight whose duty was to keep Rose Quartz safe.  So really, kind of the same role she'd always been in . . . only more proactive.  I keep thinking back to things Pearl said in previous episodes . . .

Like: "That's the mark of a great leader, Steven.  Knowing just what to keep hidden from everyone you're trying to protect!"

And:

Garnet: "Rose kept many secrets, even from us."

Pearl: "But not from ME!  I was the one she told everything!"

Ha ha ha WOOOOOOW.  The foreshadowing in this show is amazing.

One of the animators was answering some questions on Tumblr and they indicated that it wasn't just a case of Pearl wanting to keep this secret, but that she literally HAD to because it was a direct order from her diamond.  (The animator went on to say this wasn't the case with all gems, just the pearls because they are 'made to order' for a specific gem.)

I know! This was insane! It’s interesting to see how the show will move on from here, and who will do what. I definitely foresee some tough decisions, and more reveals. I don’t think we are out of the woods yet.
It was a good special, but not quite what I expected. I like the surprise, and the in depth look at pink diamond and pearl was amazing. But I dunno...there’s a bit of me that feels like we’re still missing. I’ll call it a hunch, but I think we’re going to be getting some diamond on diamond on crystal gem on diamond/rebel action soon.
Fun fan theory I have: Rebecca sugar is not human. She is some kind of changeling who feeds not on love, but rather the tears and feelings of humans. She simply releases an episode when her stockpile is low, and fills up for some time, enough to allow the fans to regenerate the lost tears before she harvests again. This would be to stretch supplies and avoid detection due to draining of humans.

...You do realize the crew have no control over how/when the episodes are released, right? That's all down to the network.

Spoiler
I  kinda want to talk about this ...

I checked into SU on occasions, I liked the Diamonds reveal, I really liked Blue Zircon, I liked where it was going, making the perfect special maternal flower Rose (that image ALWAYS annoyed the living daylights out of me) rather more morally grey.

But A Single Pale Rose?

I am done forever with this show. I will only ever check out clips that reveal - if they ever will - White Diamond (my theory is that she is a 'Zilla Diamond, the Mother of all Gems, and is literally embedded in Homeworld). But the amount of PLOT HOLES this brings up MAKES. NO. SENSE!!

Yes, I know the Crewniverse had this in mind since the beginning. BUT IT STILL DOES NOT MAKE SENSE! What about Steven's fusions? Being in two places at the same time? Other gems not realising they're not looking at a Diamond instead of a Rose Quartz? To me, this just renders all of Rose's actions absolutely pointless and destroys the image of Pink Diamond built up by the Gems on EITHER side. There are so many points and plotholes that SliceOfOtaku pointed out a lot and the more I think, the angrier I get. I knew Pearl had something to do with the shattering due to her incredibly unhealthy fixation on Rose, I honestly thought she'd be the one to use Rose's image to shatter Pink in order to impress her, and Rose was utterly horrified but pledged to keep Pearl close as she was obviously dangerous in her admiration and 'love'.

Close but not quite, apparently.

So yeah. Steven was annoying enough, but knowing he's also a Gem-Human fusion THAT IS ALSO PART DIAMOND is just ... ARGH!

So, goodnight SU, you were interesting and I liked at times where you were going, but you shot for the moon and blasted yourself in the face with glitter and bad writing.
Spoiler
I am not even remotely interested in the previews. We know Garnet will not be perma-seperated, and I've seen the leaks to do with two of the Diamonds, so this 'invasion' will amount to absolutely nothing.

BAH!

Rose/Pink is an incredibly flawed character acting a lot like the master race she was born into and I think the show did a great job at convincing the audience she was doing good.
They took a lot of elements associated with the maternal healer and flipped it (like Rose's flowers being hostile, Rose deciding against shattering the Diamonds not because "if you kill a killer you are just as bad" but because at least two of those Diamonds are her friends). She was portrayed as selfless and selfish at rhe same time and it is so much fun looking back at the episodes and how they all make sense in hindsight and how Rose messed with them all.
That's why I need Jasper to come back because I need that dramatic reveal that she punched Pink's reincarnation

I don't really care about adults who make youtube videos about their intense cartoon fan theories because they get really angry and stupid when their ideas don't match the show. It's very brony-esque "this show is for ME!!!!!"

It was the same with The Last Jedi when people freaked out because Rey wasn't old man Luke's abandoned daughter.
But at the very least TLJ was meant for teens and not 6 year olds

I tried it out when it was new, I didn't hate it, but something seemed off about the dialogue to me - like it seemed a bit too over explanative or unnatural.  I'm not sure if it was the actual lines or the delivery, but it didn't seem right, and felt like the script should have been re-done at times.  However, I watched some episodes this year, and I didn't notice any of that, even though I know the lines are there in the episodes I saw them in (they were different episodes) so either it depends on the episodes or the writing changed.

I don't really care about adults who make youtube videos about their intense cartoon fan theories because they get really angry and stupid when their ideas don't match the show. It's very brony-esque "this show is for ME!!!!!"

Yeah, I don't like that either.  It's totally cool, in my opinion, to have fan theories, and to prefer them to what really happens, but seriously, just accept that you got it wrong - you can do a fanfiction if it means that much to you.

I'll always be a brony, out of nostalgia, but there whole insisting the show is for them is really annoying.

I’m a massive Steven universe fan, and me and a girl at school are still reeling from the pink being rose reveal. Especially because right before that episode aired, she said I was “pretty much rose quartz.” In terms of personality. Didn’t see that coming. Anyway, my thoughts below for those of us that haven’t seen the teasers.

Spoiler
Am I hype for the new episodes? Heck yeah! It seems the crystal gems are going through what the fandom did when we found out too. Except for those who always thought rose was pink diamond. They just kinda gave everybody the “I told you so!” Thing. I’m interested in seeing just how everybody reacts to this.
And the prospect of the diamonds coming to earth themselves? Oh my god! Let me tell you. This is going to be interesting. And I can’t wait to see alexandrite again. Ain’t no party like an alexandrite party.
The Rebecca sugar, creator of gemkind, master of the steven universe, will hopefully be satisfied with the fandoms tears and the sacrificial feels from the fandom.

At what point did I say SliceofOtaku was such a person? I'm pointing out he brought up a lot of plotholes, he's satisfied with where the show is and eager to see what's next, he just brought up excellent points, like the rotation of the gem and Rose's fusions.

Nowhere? I said I don't care about these youtube cartoon theorists because you brought one up. That's all. Isn't that the guy who hated on Lapis, called her a badly written and awful character and years later turned his opinion around because he was getting too many response vids? :P That's all I know about him.

The only thing that wasn't all that logical to me was the gem shape. Anything else is hardly a plothole. It's how the show creators decided the story would go and to make Rose's identity less obvious they gave the Diamonds powers the other Gems don't have. Hardly a hole in the plot. Just a trapdoor for the audience.

Wondering about the Gem fusions is fine, but the show reveals things little by little.
Spoiler
Just like everyone was so convinced the SU crew want to tell kids that they shouldn't fight aganst oppression because Bismuth was bubbled. Then later it was revealed that Bismuth was right all along and Rose acted out of selfishness, because she was afraid Bismuth would destroy her and her Diamond sisters. It was all part of her selfish/Diamond character, not the crew's agenda.

Btw, I also don't care if you stop watching the show. I'm not here to convince people. I stopped watching it a while ago and picked it back up out of interest. I just don't get the obsession some people have with it. Something about those pastel shows brings out the worst in grown adults

, I'm losing interest. The Pink Diamond reveal was... so lame. It's a shame, because I used to be a HUGE fan of this show. What about that conversation Pearl remembered in Rose's Scabbard? There's no way both that and the conversation between her and Rose we see in A Single Pale Rose both happened - they're opposites of each other. Why would Rose say she'd "stay to fight for earth"? If she was Pink Diamond all along, it's not like she could leave, considering she started the rebellion. Blergh.

At the very least, I'll always love Peridot, Garnet and Zircon.

Honestly not sure how I feel about the Rose-is-PD thing. I think I'm gonna have to wait and see how this week's eps go (although I admit I'm not that hopeful for them.. the preview looked pretty lame. Did we really need yet another "characters argue for 5 episodes straight and then make up yaaay" 'arc'? :/).

I dunno. The show's been going downhill for a long while IMO but the last few eps did feel better than the ones before them (if that makes sense). Things felt like they were picking up a bit (...and then the promo for this week's eps came out..). So idk. I guess I've stuck with it this long, might as well see where they're going with all of this.

The gem rotating thing was stupid, though.

So a new episode just dropped. Uh...I’ll put my ideas down in the spoiler tag. Watch it, then come back.

Spoiler
I cannot state how much I love pearl and rose/pinks relationship and interactions. So seeing how pink learned to love earth, and came up with the idea of rose quartz because of pearl... I think I’ve found one of my new favourite episodes. And how sapphire and ruby fusing made her fight for gemkind as well. This was an episode that really hit my heart with the funny and cute, meaningful interactions.
I liked the development pearl has gone through over the series. We always knew she was a pearl, with a servant disposition. I found her demeanour prior to rebellion, as shown here, kinda adorable. She just wanted to please her diamond.
Overall, a beautiful episode. Really, I think the shows staff have really hit the pearl/rose people hard with the feels. Steven universe crewniverse, well done. Very, very well done.
And who else laughed when pink and pearl tried to fuse? At first I was like “omg it’s rainbow quartz!” But then they fell. Sounds a lot like another fusion we know.

I liked this episode. Reasons below because spoilery spoilers

Ruby and sapphire are just so gosh darn cute and wonderful and I can’t stand it! Mom had to ask me what the heck I was screaming “YES!” for.
Also, amethyst really showed one of her better moments here. She is the first gem to actually see Steven as someone who doesn’t need all this and more dropped on him. Steven is a massively caring character. But just like how helping others is wonderful, you gotta help yourself too. I’m not the biggest amethyst fan out there (bird Mom for life), but I like her because of her very...nice way of looking at this whole thing. Would nice be the right word? I dunno.
I’m all for villains being sort of forgiven. Like, if you aknowledge the bad you did, work to make it better, and genuinely want to make things better, you deserve that redemption. Not everybody will give you it, but least your trying to be a better person. But if it’s like what the diamonds have done, and continue to do, it’s going to take a lot more than one or two episodes and an apology.
Overall, a very good episode. I haven’t felt this was about a new episode in quite some time. Very down to earth with the feels.

aa I wish Lars could've shown up, too! It kills me how they introduced that great storyline and then barely did anything with it.. IMO the "everything has to be from Steven's POV" rule really hinders the show.

"Reunited" was very good! Very exciting, too!! Peridot was the best :D And Bismuth. Bismuth's fast becoming one of my favourite chars, after this week's eps ^^ and ughhh that ENDING.. why did it have to end thereeee... I hope we're not on hiatus for months again :( though I have a bad feeling we will, since CN usually puts their shows on hiatus around this time of the year.. Dang CN and their horrible scheduling.

I really liked Peridot's interactions with Bismuth! I have mixed feelings on how they plan on redeeming the Diamonds, leaning more towards "please don't".
Watch the hiatus go until 2019! If this set was spread out over a month or two with weekly airings, the hiatuses wouldn't be so bad. I'm absolutely sick of the Stevenbomb schedules.

Whatever they do for the last season I hope it won't contain a single Beach City episode. I really don't care if they make a band or if Ronaldo gets to go to anime con. Just enough with this slice of life stuff and more Gems and how they operate.
I want to know how the Diamonds got to the top, if White created them all and how they relate to eachother. I want to have Jasper/Amethyst interaction. I want each episode to contain Gem stuff.

The problem with the townie eps is that for some reason, it feels like they're determined to make them as far removed from the gem stuff as possible. It's ridiculous. Give us an ep about Ronaldo hanging out with Lapis. Give us an ep about Bismuth working at the Big Donut. Give us another Mystery Girl ep (seriously, where the heck is she?!). Anything! I'm not against the townie eps on the whole, but they're annoying nowadays since they keep putting throwaway stories that are hard to get invested in, in the middle of interesting plotlines (who the heck thought an ep about the cool kids + Sadie forming a band would more interesting than Lars' adventures in space?! Oh, wait, right, show has to be from Steven's POV). If they could make them more integrated into the main plot, instead of just feeling out-of-place, that would be great.

(Also it'd be nice if they followed up on some stuff.. "Horror Club" had some interesting Lars and Ronaldo stuff and then it never got brought up ever again. Gah... Is it just me or does the show have a tendency to pile more plot twists/mysteries/etc on instead of resolving the ones they've already revealed?)
Title: Re: Steven Universe
Post by: Zapper on July 11, 2018, 02:12:56 PM
Ronaldo/Lars was probably never touched upon again because it was something like backstory for Lars being bitter but nothing they wanted to explore. Especially when a lot of fans rightfully dislike Ronaldo episodes. Including me. The ep where he wanted to become a Gem is one of the few eps I never want to watch again.

-shrug- if you say so. Just doesn't make sense to me that they'd bring it up in the first place and then never follow up on it. It was pretty interesting.. mind, I don't hate Ronaldo like apparently everyone here does, so. Although I do agree that he's been pretty one-note lately (and I haven't seen it since it aired, but I remember "Rocknaldo" as being... well, forgettable.. so I'm not arguing with you on that one :P).

I love SU! The "Stevenbombs" don't bother me as much as they should, just because I watch the episodes with my partner, who I hang out with about once a week. We like to watch our shows in batches together. So when they release a batch of episodes, we watch it in one sitting and we're fine.

But, I understand that it's bothersome for other people.

I'm split on my opinion of Gem vs Beach City episodes, because yeah I want to see the story progress, but I really love Lars and Sadie (can we please do more with Lars and see his storyline??) but what I'm most upset about is Mystery Girl! I'm dying to see more of her and Pearl!

aa yessss where the heck did Mystery Girl go?! I don't get why they introduced her and then never did anything with her :( And I'd love to see more Lars/Sadie, too. I'd kill for more Lars.

How much does

White Diamond
remind you of

Metropolis?

From the jerkiness of her Pearl, the black and white and blown out highlights, the style of her costume and heels, heck even the styling of Homeworld.

I found this pic on Reddit so at least someone else made the connection.

Christine Ebersole as White Diamond is also an interesting choice.  She's kind of amazing at delivering sarcastic quips, always has been.  She also has a lot of experience specifically fighting with Patti LuPone in-character and vice-versa.

I love
Spoiler
White Diamond! She does not disappoint. I will admit I had my doubts about this show with the Rose=Pink Diamond reveal, but this is really pulling me back in. And while Yellow and Blue worked with Steven it's not like they're forgiven. I watch so much FiM I half expected them to be pardoned and accepted into the fold.

Can't wait to wait a year for the next episode!  :P
Spoiler
I'm very interested in what's up with Homeworld. I love the broken and cracked look of White's pearl.

Did you guys here that there will be a Steven Universe movie?

I'm wondering if that will be the finale?  Or just a side adventure...

WOW

Spoiler
Great point about Metropolis / White Diamond!  Definitely some inspiration there.

Pink Diamond's ship SLAYS ME.  A pair of legs!!  Do you think White Diamond has a ship that is a torso / arms so they can combine?

White Diamond is amazing and her Pearl is so unsettling!  I love them![/spoilers]

She 100% does.  That larger armless torso in the area where the legs landed on Homeworld...look at that scene again.  4 platforms. two empty with the yellow and blue crowds where Yellow and Blue's arm ships would be.  The thing I think we all thought was just a statue is definitely a ship.  The Great Diamond Authority is basically ultra-fashionable Voltron.[/spoilers]

They revealed White Diamond???

Spoilers dude! :D  The episode is called "Legs from Here to Homeworld".  It looks like it aired at SDCC so they decided to just slap it up.

Edit:
Spoiler
Also be prepared for a pink butt you can not tear your eyes away from. [/spoilers]

Holy mother of cheddar!
Spoiler
So white is officially released. And her pearl. Who I think is somewhat creepy. There’s something not right about that gem...
Before I dive into the big kahuna herself, can I just say the little bit of centi we saw was kinda bittersweet. It’s nice to know that they could temporarily reverse the corruption, but sad that it only lasted for such a short time. But as we were told by garnet, corruption is a tear in the mind. The diamonds could only hold that tear together, not put some tape on it. But it’s nice to see her. The uncorrupted her who still has her pink diamond insignia. I’m really hoping they can at least try to help fix some of the gems.
Now for the big thing that blew us all away. White diamonds reveal. First of all, I think seeing homeworld like this is wonderful. We never saw what the planet looked like. In a way, it’s kinda pretty. And it seems like white heard the news of pink pretty quickly. Makes you wonder how she heard of pink diamond not shattering that quickly. But I think she’s going to make for an interesting character, once we see more of her. He design looks good in the few seconds we saw her. One can tell by size and appearance this is the big cheese of the big cheeses. This is the end all be all on homeworld. I honestly am quite intrigued, and want to see more of her and her creepy pearl. It might be the total lack of any emotion in her, or the strange crack looking mark over her left eye, but there’s something inherently odd, almost creepy about that pearl.
Ending thoughts: It will be interesting to see how the crystal gems play out on homeworld. I’m sure Steven will have some moments of gems referring to him as pink diamond, and treating him like a diamond, and we will possibly see more famethyst  members. What’s to Come is going to be very interesting indeed.

I mean, Pink's the only diamond with a gem in her navel.  Her ship contains most of the parts of the body used for reproduction and the control room's kind of like a womb.  Who knows, White might have known exactly what Pink was up to...because Pink might have been made for the purposes of interfacing with organic life.  It might have been some weird manipulative plan the entire time! </wildspeculation>

Spoiler
Episode was great, White is just creepy.
There's definitely something weird with white pearl, she stayed in the same pose and went through
a wall like a ghost, also she was voiced by the same voice actress as her diamond.I think she is mind controlled or something like that. Also she has her gem on her navel, the same place Pink had hers. There was definitely a pearl swap since our pearl has her gem on her head like White.

Okay - here is my issue with Rose-

You'd think an entire species that is based on gems- could tell the difference at a glance between once type and another-

and the tummy gems are being displayed all the time... seems odd that nobody noticed the difference between these two gems, doesn't it?

Can You tell the difference ?

You'd think they'd recognize Pink's pearl, too.  :P
Most of my issues with this reveal is rooted in Rose being hailed as some great rebel leader but it sounds a lot like she just wanted to have fun.

You'd also think Gems wouldn't be able to touch stuff since their bodies are made of light, therefore not solid

Anyways...
Spoiler
I was surprised White's reveal came so sudden. But she was terrifying. Cool it with the fake lashes, lady.
I wonder if the diamond ships can all form one big Megazord

It better form a gem megazord or there are going to be a lot of disappointed fans. And a very confused me. You guys just built ships made to look like body parts not because they can connect and become a megazword, but because you can?

I always thought they had one more season to go. Especially since CN halfed one season and made it into two.

One of the Rubies did...mentioned Steven's gem was more of a pinkish red than a reddish pink.
