Title: "Princess Luna"
Post by: Strawberry Swirl on May 28, 2018, 04:57:25 PM
Now I've found plenty of fakies in my career while thrifting, and I'd wager a lot of you guys can say the same. But one thing I did not expect and still am struggling to understand is an actual full-on bootleg.

How did Goodwill manage to acquire one of these? How did it get into the states in the first place? It looks like something you'd find on Taobao or Aliexpress.

Honest! I'm sure plenty of you have seen similar-looking specimens on those sites. It's no secret that some people have made dozens upon dozens of uncanny-looking G4 style bootlegs (some examples of which I've compiled an image of, under a spoiler because none are actually mine.)

Although for whatever reason the first image is super small, you can clearly see that they put Princess Luna's symbol on this thing. But what of the sideways text underneath?

I'm assuming this is the company who made this one, could the number be for identification? It's too long to be a phone number. In that case there would be more of these things out there somewhere. Have they also made it to the US? Or are they still in their country of origin? The chances of the other ones also being in thrift stores seems to be very low I'd say but it may be a possibility.

Another thing I find fascinating about this specimen is that the tail is rooted, instead of coming out of one single hole. Sure maybe other fakies and bootleg items are known for this but it's something interesting for sure.

Regardless of all these questions I have and any you may have as well, I'm pleased to be able to have found this thing in the first place. If you know me then you know bootleg toys/merchandise like this are MY LIFE, I think they're funny as heck and I delight in collecting them! It's just astonishing to me that this thing managed to make its way to me not through on online purchase but through a completely reputable thrift store.

Anywho ""Princess Luna"" has found a spot standing next to one of my other pony bootlegs, who I've named Fakity for what should be obvious reasons. Thank you if you've managed to read this entire spiel!

I have seen other people with one. She's rather cute.

The company logo on her leg cracks me up.

Nice find! Greenbrier produces lots of fakes. Their solid purple and solid pink ones are often sold in dollar stores such as Dollar Tree, but they have many others that vary in age. A lot of them are sold in the US. Dollar stores usually have a wide selection of fakies. People buy them and then donate them, I guess.

My Goodwill sometimes buys new items that haven't been donated. Among these items are lip balms, candles, pet supplies, and MIP fakies, new and never opened. Just thought I should mention it :)

Anyway, congrats!! I'm sure it was exciting to find her :D

Greenbrier is the company that makes fakies for Dollar Tree! I have a lot of Greenbrier fakies myself!

Wish they had stuck their name on her NDS for this one.

Cool! What an amazingly unique little fakie. I like the eyes on this one. Not sure what it is about them, but I like it. And her identification info is all on one side, so now she can never be caught without her licence and registration. :silly:

That is just so interesting to me. How can they sell something that clearly has the symbol of a current copyrighted character? In any case I will have to make a visit to my Dollar Trees and see for myself.

What an odd fakie to find.  I like the writing on her leg.  Talk about weird!  She will make a cool addition to your collection

Huh. She's cute! Pink/purple/green is not exactly the color scheme I'd think of for a Luna fakie...but at least the company leg text matches the color of the her symbol! A blue moon I get, but a green one? Weird.
