If you were in some weird hypothetical situation, and were forced to pick only one generation of pony to collect for the rest of your life, which would it be, and why? Doesn't necessarily have to be your favourite gen, and honestly I'd be super interested to hear responses from those who don't pick their absolute favourite gen! (Like maybe one gen is your favourite, but one PONY is your fave over all, and from another gen, so to keep her you'd pick them? etc.) This includes merch as well! All ponies, art, and merch are now magically poofed into being from the gen you picked.
I collect all of them (aside from .5 gens and EQG) and if I HAD to pick only one, it'd absolutely be G1. They feel the most nostalgic (G3 was my first childhood gen but was given all my aunt's G1s around the same time and grew up with them both! Even the movies and such), and have the most variety and my favourite designs. I love their soft sweetness vs. the other gens boldness and bright colors. (Don't get me wrong I love that too!) All of my absolute favourites are from G1 too. I have a hard time picking my fave gen out of the first 3 but I'd say they are probably the top favourite.
G3 has some REALLY close runner ups too, ponies that make me go "Ahhh, but what about HER..." (Looking at you, Abracadabra and Pumpkin Tart...) when considering gens, but still still sticking with G1 here. (my Ice Crystal and Dutch Diary. @.@)

For me it would definitely be G3. Although I collect all gens G3 is the one I grew up with so it holds wayyy too many memories for them to vanish! Also as far as merch and art G3 has my favorite art style so that works out well too. :P

G1, as I'm older than the above poster & grew up wi them, plus I love HQG1C so I could keep collecting them like mad lol.

G4 are cheap! G3 are cheap too, and had a lot more variety, but I'm still quite partial to G4 since they introduced me to pony collecting as a whole.
Also, as long as I can still customize, I'm fine.

This is tough. G3 is my first generation and my favorite generation is G4. Absolute favorite. But I enjoy G1 toys the most so I'd choose them. G1 had the most fun gimmicks and better quality in general. Besides the older the toy the cooler it is to get your hands on in my opinion.

I wouldn't be happy to give up G1, but G3 is my clear choice. I began collecting with G3's and just think that they're all delightful with so many beautiful color combinations and symbols.

Absolutely G1, no question. I got my first pony back in 1983, and while I collect all generations (not the .5s), G1 is easily my favourite.

That will be g1's for me. They are just so appealing and tere are so many of them.
I really love them, tho g4 would be a close second due to me watching and loving the show.

Oh man, that's tough. My kneejerk reaction was G1, but then there's my beloved Ivy... and my Trixies.. and... aaaa!! Couldn't I just pick one gen to collect and keep Ivy as an outlier? ;)
I guess I'd go for G1.

That's a no brainer for me.
I genuinely adore several members of G2, G3 and G4. My avatar is the G4 pony my sister bought me as a mascot for my Japanese trip, too.
But G1 is different for me. I grew up with it and that makes all the difference. The history of the line, where and how things happened here, the variations, the stories, and all of those things have also been my collecting geekness for more than 20 years now. (Wow, that is actually scary, but I first wrote to Hasbro UK in 1995 and so it's literally 25 years of doing UK MLP history geeking this year.)
It's not really a toy collection to me in the sense that I just have the toys and look at them. So if you took away the G2, G3, G4 toys, it would be sad, but I'd get by. However, if you took away G1, it would take away all the investigating and mystery side of G1 in the UK, and I would not like that at all.
So yeah. It has to be G1.
It's not an exaggeration to say that my G1 pony backcards are almost as precious to me as most of the ponies are. >.>

G1 for me for sure. I love G3 also, not bothered about any of the others although a few G2 and G4 have sneaked into my herd 😂

it would have to be G1 for me. I like the accessories most for G1 as well, and some of the playsets. G3 ponies are really nice but I'm not as much of a fan of thier ponyverse. G4 is lovely and I do like a lot of the playsets too, but it's not my era. I like the larger G1 ponies.

G1 hands down. That was what I grew up watching, so they'll always have a special place in my heart. Plus, 80's toys just have such a beautiful "soft" look to them that none of the newer lines have.
I've often considered reducing my collection to only G1s, but G3 just has some beautiful designs and I love the characters from G4, so it's hard to part with them. >_<

I may have started with G3 but G1 all the way! I love the variety of species and art!

I don't think I can choose. G1 is great and my personal favorite, but G3 is too good to never have any ponies from.
I lost my collection to foreclosure (long story) so I only have Bay Breeze, Junko Mizuno, and Velvet Bow. I wouldn't give them up for G1s.

While I started with G4, I'd have to choose G3. The size and variety, combined with their price and availability, make them perfect for me to collect.

I guess I'm stuck with G1 because I wouldn't give up my last childhood pony..
but if G5 is the cutest thing I'd ever seen......... then that. lol.

I belive it also would be G1 for me. I gotta start with where it all began for me. :)

Even though I did grow up in the 80s/90s, MLP wasn't a primary toy for me and I didn't even know there were TV shows until I joined the Arena :lol: I did know about the G1 movies though and had seen them as a child. So, I sort of grew up with G1. It's the gen I would pick for sure. I think it has the most fun ponies, I like the diversity and I love Nirvanas.

As much as I like G1 I have no sentimental attachment to it. I'm going to go with G4 since space and money are considerations for me. Especially since blind bag/Cutie Mark Crew ponies exist.

That's a tough one. G1 is why I'm in the fandom in the first place, and were my first 9 ponies, but G4 is what got me into the franchise more than at any time in the past, ignited my creative side into an inferno, and got me to do stuff I'd have never done in the past (going to conventions, cosplay, etc). So the jury is still out in my case.

Honestly, G3. I know it isn't as popular, but G3 was the one I grew up with, so I have a soft spot for it, I guess. I also really love the incredibly wide variety of colors and themes in G3 ponies. Most other generations focus on flowers, fruits, desserts, butterflies, etc., but G3 had some really creative ponies. Puzzlemint, Denim Blue, Butterpop, and so many others. Plus all the Halloween ponies!! I feel like a G3 collection would have such a wonderful variety to it.

G1 since they are the first ponies I had, and grew up playing with them. But G3 would definitely be my second choice, and honestly if I didn't have any attachment to G1 from childhood and just came into it blind, I'd probably pick G3. I think they have the body shape that is closest to being realistic, and that appeals to me. G4 in particular took a long time to grow on me due to the wildly-unrealistic head shape...

G1 is my childhood heard, and if I had to get rid of everything since, well... I'd keep G1 above all else.
