Title: Barbie Inspiring Women's Collection--Where Are They?
Post by: Majesty on March 20, 2018, 05:18:00 PM
So I've seen these advertised on TV and on the internet but I've checked Walmart and Target pretty frequently looking where the barbie stuff is and I haven't seen anything.  Are they only being sold on Mattel's website?

I want the Amelia Earhart one and the Bindi Irwin one.

Has anyone seen them in stores?

I don't know about the others but there was a post somewhere about the Bindi doll being a Ooak for Bindi Irwin. Unfortunately I think Mattel made these dolls just because it's Women's history month
" Look at us making dolls of famous women role models! What, you want to actually buy them? Sorry, that would make sense!"
(Sorry, just really disappointed with Mattel these last couple years. I hope I'm wrong and they are made as they're pretty awesome!)

I head that Amelia, Freda Kalo and Kathleen Johnson are showing up at Toys R Us Stores. My local store didn't have any in stock over the weekend. I'm not sure about the Bindi doll.

Bindi is for sure listed on the website, with many others. I heard that Fridas family were pretty unhappy with her doll, I can kinda see why. I would LOVE both of them and Earhart  though x.x Earhart especially was my childhood hero

On Amazon.uk it says coming soon, but you should see the price £49.99, I don't know what that is in other countries.

They always say, "available to everyone!" and then it's only on the website with crazy shipping, customs fees, etc. where you cannot inspect in-person.  :(

It would actually BE empowering for them to be on the shelves at Walmart drowning out the putrid selection of Blonde Blue-Eyed Barbie, but noooooooooo...  since they have to be $30-60 at suggested retail, those aren't the Barbies that Walmart orders to pile on their shelves.

Some Walmart and Target stores have a section for collector barbies though, mostly for holiday barbies or movie themed barbies like The Hunger Games so that's why I thought to check those stores.  I thought they would be doing the dolls all month long or starting on International Women's Day.

I think the price is normal for collector Barbie dolls sadly.  My parents got me the Tomb Raider one for the movie, but I mostly wanted it because I enjoyed the games (mostly the first one) and it was around $46 or something from amazon.  That wasn't a scalper or someone buying all the dolls cheap from a store then selling it double the price on amazon that's the actual price.

I read somewhere that they actually cancelled the line entirely because of the Freda doll and the family complaining about it.

All the Toys R Us stores are closing sadly and I don't have any near me but it was a good suggestion Ponyfan thanks. :)

The Bindi doll that is being shown in the ads is a custom doll and will not be mass produced.

Target has collector Barbies sometimes. Maybe they will carry them?

Yeah I agree. The idea of OOAKs for promotional purposes never sat right with me. If there is demand for actual "rolemodel"dolls they should commit to the idea and not just make a doll for the actual woman in question.
That just looks like an empty gesture. Especially when women affiliated with Mattel get dolls (like the recent female directors who got "honored" with a doll are Jenkins and DuVernay who also directed Barbie liscenses Wonder Woman and A Wrinkle In Time).

I am a massive fan of Frida Kahlo but even if her family would have approved of it I wouldn't have bought her doll. Making these dolls expensive is a Mattel cash grab and proves they don't really want to make them available as rolemodels for little girls but adult collectors with money to spend. They are 60€. It would be easier for a parent to get a Fashionista and customize her
