Title: are your ponies gay?
Post by: kingluke on June 12, 2019, 12:13:25 AM
Hello,

I saw heftysmurf76 post about the fim same sex couple in the show and was wondering. Do you have any non straight ponies in your herd?

I have windwhistler and fizzy as lesbians dating, same with sweet stuff and love token. Also my tex is a ftm trans pony, cause I need somewhere to project my transness if that makes sense

Do you headcanon them, gay, trans, nonbinary or one of all the other things?

If so, please tell/show me. Thank you. :)

I suppose I've always thought of my ponies as nonbinary! Even when I was a kid and before I knew that word or concept even existed I never saw my ponies as male or female exactly, they were just kind of who they were! In a way thats still how I sort of see them today!

I also definitely always shipped Starcatcher and Skywishes and have seen them as a couple. They are so in love. :P

Yes, my pony collection has its share of same-sex couples. Couples usually come about when we buy ponies from the same seller and they just seem to fit together. This is what happened with Tex and Sunburst, and also with Moondancer and Moonstone (who are now adoptive parents of a motley crew of baby ponies). Bridal Beauty and SHS Dainty are a couple as well, I think that came about because Dainty doesn't stand up properly so was always leaning on BB and we thought they looked cute together. Then when we got BB's veil and accessories we of course had to hold a wedding (my gf and I are 26 going on 6 . We pretend we're dressing up and posing our ponies to take arty photos of them, but really we're playing ).

My gf wasn't really into creating pony families when she had ponies as a kid (they just all lived together in Dream Castle, and though there were babies there weren't a lot of romances) but she always regarded Applejack and Heartthrob as a couple (despite the fact she didn't actually own Heartthrob!). Reading the stories she wrote about them when she was about 5 or 6, they seem to have been ponies who flew in the face of gender conventions . They were both described as "strong and brave" and often appeared as heroes saving the other ponies from things. They also looked after Baby Heartthrob. Applejack also switched gender at random, sometimes in the middle of a story! They obviously meant a lot to each other as one story says that Applejack had had a terrible dream, "he dreamt Heartthrob had died. Then he woke up and found it was only a dream". Of course when we started collecting ponies, Heartthrob was one of the first we bought and she's now an item with my gf's childhood Applejack :lovey:.

I think my Flowerburst isn't entirely straight, I've seen her with Royalette and one other pony I can't seem to recall, I think it was another G3. She might be gyromantic (Romantically attracted to feminine people) and Royalette probably isn't straight either.

I also think Sweetberry and Star Catcher are a couple, they might be on the down low though. And they do end up having a daughter in the future, although they don't know that yet because their daughter Sunshower comes from the future all grown up.

When I was around 5 I would Modify ( cut their hair!!!) of some of my ponies so that I could have a mom and Dad ( G3’s have no males!) but now I would say that my Ponyland is rather traditional. But now, my ponies are mainly displayed on a shelf
( and in boxes). Making scenes and styling their hair for display is fun though!

Some of my ponies are, yes! In my herd I have G3 Pinkie and Minty as a couple, Star Catcher and Skywishes (of course!). With G4 I very much ship Starlight and Trixie together, both in my G4 and G4.5 displays I have them next to each other. I also really like Moondancer and Glory together for G1, though I don't have them both yet, I have Moondancer but still need Glory. And I have Baby Glory but need Baby Moondancer... whenever I have all four they're going to be a family. <3

I definitely have some.  The most recent one is Moondancer and Skydancer, they are such an elegant couple!  I also paired up Denim Blue and Peri Winkle and Abra-Ca-Dabra and Dazzleglow (a cross-generational ship, gasp!).  I also am convinced Hidden Treasure is a lesbian, but just hasn't found anyone yet.  Hang in there girl!  I tend to just invent these pairings as I place them together on shelves.

This, basically. When I was a child my ponies did have characters of course, but that didn't go much further than just mum and dad, as far as relationships go.

This for me too. I'm not fussed about my ponies having relationships with each other. I wasn't really as a kid either. I would sometimes make CJ and Snowflake boys if I wanted more boys for some reason as I only had 3 actual adult boys, but I never thought much about gender as a kid.

Although I did that with Snowflake and CJ, I am generally pretty strict on gender to what the comics or cards say a pony is (so Sportstime is a boy, sniffles from sniffles and snookums is a boy, etc). However my ponies aren't really bothered with romance. They were always too busy battling zombie invasions and the ghostbusters when I was a kid anyway...

Don't really see the need to define fantasy toys by human standards I guess :) As an adult for they are as much a history project as they are a 'toy', so they are working ponies in that sense.

Just my childhood ponies in my sig. The rest of my ponies don't really have in depth characters or relationships.

A few of my ponies are in same sex relationships. I guess I started thinking about it: ponies are like, 5:1 female to male ratio. It would make sense that ponies would be homosexual, and it wouldn’t be frowned upon in pony society. Though most of my herd is single, or just not caring about relationships.

Same really.  Even now, I can't see them in relationships.  As a child, I saw them more as talking horses but lived their lives free of romance.

G4 Trixie and Starlight Glimmer
G4 Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie
G3 Sunny Daze and Bashful Bonnets
G1 Snuzzle and Cotton Candy

Oh, of course! If I'm gay, then the ponies have to be gay too. Duh.

Among the G1s, Bowtie is sweet on Glory, but will probably end up with Cotton Candy. No one is sure whether Surprise and Confetti are dating or just really good friends.

As for G3s, Starcatcher is in a secret relationship with Glitterbelle, and Sparkleworks and Cinnamon Breeze are dating. Golden Delicious and Citrus Sweetheart are also a thing. Also, all of the pegasi are nonbinary.

In the world of G4s, Feathermay is an out lesbian, and Trixie is coming to terms with her sexuality (show? What show?).

In my world yeah because it’s what’s most natural for myself. Just like some people see certain ponies as boys I see them mostly as gay or at the very least bi or pan.

Namely I have couples, for example the TAF babies have their mom and another mom that’s the same race. Sugar Sweet/Sweet Tooth for example make baby ST a uni. Gusty and Up Up and Away make baby UUaA a uni too. Twinkler/Milky Way the same but a peg.

I have a couple of specific characters as non binary in my head as well.

You say that like I’m not out here shipping the boys together. >:3c

Seriously though Glory and Moondancer are gay married if you count the porcelain figs as meaning anything. So I honestly think it’s very reasonable to assume that many other lgbt ponies exist.

Lol, I only like the boys since they are Clydes (my RL mare is a Clyde), but there are no female ones. To be fair with a real horse herd it would be many females and one male with the group but still. Lol, I don’t think I have any boys anymore.

As a kid I had two boy ponies, one canon and the other was my interpretation. I had no "daddy" ponies and did not know the big brother ponies existed and I never paid much attention.
I did not know that "gay" or "lesbian" or "bi" could ever be used on a cutesy animal, so I never paid attention to that.

But I had two pony couples that I would put together because they looked good together and they were "super best friends" and one of them took care of a baby pony together. The other ponies were just whatever  I always went with the "baby ponies come from mirrors".

As an adult I do have one canon stallion in my herd, G2 Prince Firefly, and I put him with Ivy, so I guess I have one token hetero couple for ~diversity LOL
But I don't see them as having sexual orientation. They are cute characters and they look cute together. That's it.
To quote Bob's Burgers:
"They make a cute couple, huh?"
-"They certainly are standing next to each other"

Now ask me about Ratity/AJ because I ship those and I also have a heartbreaking headcanon about who Rarity's real parents are :haha:

I played with these as a young kid and wasn't interested in romances & relationships of any sort! I didn't even have mummy + daddy families, either!

I was a tomboy and so were my ponies!  they often got muddy hooves, but I paid particular care not to scratch them or mess up their hair.

My ponies were girls but only because of the backstories. They spent their time playing horsey-things, like jumping over twig jumps and then later having their manes and tails styled.

As an adult collector, I do not assign any personality to them, really. I just like looking at them!

I've never thought of them being in relationships (besides 2) so I guess I've never really defaulted to thinking of them as straight. Except for the Mommy and Daddy ponies of course, but I don't own any of them yet.
My collection's couple are G3 Royal Rose and Desert Rose. I initially placed them next to each other on my shelf because I think their colours look lovely together, but they have the same surname? So I guess as of now I'm going to consider them married.

Edit: I totally forgot that years ago I found Steamer and Cherries Jubilee together in a charity shop, and Cherries Jubilee was wearing Steamer's bandana. That's something a girlfriend would do, like taking your boyfriend's jacket or sweatshirt. It seemed like they were probably close!

Oh, of course! If I'm gay, then the ponies have to be gay too. Duh.

This is basically how it is for me too ^^

when i was a kid i didn't really know that gay people existed, and i grew up with g3, so there weren't many relationships in my herd- apart from cotton candy's off-screen "husband" (later portrayed by a ratty old g1 posey), because hey, butterscotch and baby pink sunsparkle had to come from somewhere.

nowadays, it's just... yeah, i'm gay, so my ponies are gay too. that's just how it works, duh. I don't have many couples but g3 applejack and spring fever are of course a butch/femme lesbian couple. and cotton candy disapproves of butterscotch's flighty girlfriend shell-belle. and g4 fluttershy and rainbow dash are always displayed next to each other

I'm not overly sure about thier relationships. In my ponyverse, most of the male and female ponies live together in large polygamous groups, simply because there are not many boys/brothers. I have three mountain boys and three loving family Daddies, but no UK family Daddies and no Big Brothers. That said, the Gingerbread pose ponies are very androgynous and I do have Sportstime, Shady and Mint Dreams who I think could be boys. There are also many friendships and attractions of different kinds between the girls however I don't have particular long term pairs worked out. I hadn't thought up any gay male couples but that's not to say I think there's anything wrong with it. Maybe I could re-consider that IDK.

To think of a few? Magnet Bolt and Sunny Rays, Princess Peppermint and Lily Lightly (I always imagined Lily as a princess, so Peppermint was the lowly peasant who found and married her princess, becoming a princess herself... or something. I guess it's kind of depressing to think of serfdom/feudal classes in the pony world), obviously Skywishes and Starcatcher, Flitterheart and Feathermay, Glory and Bowtie, Prince Firefly and Clever Clover... there's more, but I can't think of them at the moment.

(I don't get how people can look at their ponies and not automatically think up stories and characters for them - must be nice, my stories always get weird and end up with more drama than a soap opera. HORSE WAR HORSE WAR)

I probably have more that I can't think of at the moment. I used to have a list, but I can't access it now due to it being on another account :(

I had in away a gender specified herd. I played that a pony was a boy or a girl. That was the bottom line. Now I did however play that a girl wanted to do boy things and a boy wanted to do girl things. Granted 80s baby. In that time strong female roles were breaking the "man's world" and men broke into "woman's world" if that makes any sense. I did not play too many couples except the prince who loved a poor girl, or the girl who said goodbye to love, so she could rule the world/kingdom.

I will be total honest. Growing up I had no clue. To me, Gay=happy. I for the longest time thought gay meant super happy people. I could tell you so much that I did not understand because no one really talked about those things.

So in young play I could not create it. As I am adult and I do keep my child ways of play. I am hoping to be a writer someday, and I play with them like a story for my book....sets and all.

But it's a world I dont know not fully understand so I am unable to create it in play.

Basically I just dont get it, as I lack experience. BUT that does not mean I love anyone less for how they live their lives. I will forever respect all love and choices as long as the person is happy.

I enjoy childhood play stories. I do believe play is where we break down learning. I still remember getting into a huge fight with a childhood friend and recreating the story with my ponies...I realized how hurtful I was, and really took being kind to heart. I forgave my friend...and well it's ok that she didnt....kids:)

No matter how you played, just keep playing. Turn 37 and I still play with toys:)

(I don't get how people can look at their ponies and not automatically think up stories and characters for them - must be nice, my stories always get weird and end up with more drama than a soap opera. HORSE WAR HORSE WAR)

I guess I did that more as a kid for the ponies, I wrote lots of stories and stuff for them back then. I also remember writing a whole history of evolution of ponyland when I was around 17 or 18...it used to be on my PC but I don't have it any more I don't think. I write a lot but I think up stories and characters around other things more now.

I guess for me not all characterisations/stories/ideas/imagination should revolve around human concerns.

I'm not really inspired to make my ponies have romance stories and never was even when I wrote stories about them. They were too busy saving the world from x or y invader - or, occasionally, going to magic school (and then saving the world from x or y invader as an extracurricular activity).

I personally never wanted to impose real world stuff on my ponies because there's enough of it in the real world already. Perhaps as a kid I also figured that since ponies can apparently breed using the magic mirror, it really didn't matter if they had relationships or not. As a kid I did have some awareness of what gay was - even though it was the 1980s, my family are pretty liberal and open with stuff and I just accepted it as a normal part of the world so I don't suppose I ever thought about it enough to actively include it in my games. I mean, if the girls were too busy saving the world to date the guys, they weren't gonna have time to date each other either, right...?

I also believe though that it is very much each to their own on subjects like this. The beauty of MLP is everyone has a different perspective.

That's exactly how it is with me . I've always done a mix of soap opera stuff and epic fantasy and it invariably ends up weird!

Nobody has to reenact somebody elses love life to respect said love life ;) So don't worry.
I don't have a single m/m ship in MLP and only two m/f (Ivy and Firefly in G2 and Ice Crystal and Sparkler in G1). Does not mean I hate the boy ponies, they are just not as interesting to me.

Incredibly so! I think I have maybe one straight couple in my herd? Everyone else is a lesbian because I don't have any boys, and tbh if I did they'd probably be gay haha.
