Title: Do you shut down your PC or laptop, or leave it on?
Post by: BlackCurtains on August 29, 2019, 06:53:51 PM
Just something I'm curious about. I tried to cover every scenario I could think of.

As for me, I always shut down when I'm finished. If I think I'll be using it again later in the day, I use 'sleep' mode. I hardly ever leave my PC on for over 24 hours (though sometimes I have marathon gaming sessions). My laptop is a MacBook Pro and I always shut it down. Now, my tablet, I use sleep mode for, and it is never turned off all the way unless an update calls for it. Same with my 3DS.

I know some people who never shut down their computers, or leave them on and running for weeks at a time. I can kinda see the point depending on how you use it. Like if you are doing a lot of rendering/editing/recording/uploading, you'd need to leave it on for a long time, days. My PC is primary for browsing the interweb and playing games so it doesn't need to be on all the time. Plus, it would make my bedroom way too hot if it ran constantly

Some people think that shutting down and restarting a computer puts more stress on it or is bad for it somehow, but as far as everything I've read about the subject, that isn't true. Some processes that run 100% of the time should be restarted every once in a while at least.

My one laptop is such a hassle to turn back on that I just leave it running. Sometimes it decides to shut itself off (if I'm playing a game... Annoying) and I'll turn it back on the next day, but I do avoid it if I can.
My other laptop doesn't have this problem, but it's easier to just have it in sleep mode.

I have a laptop which I use when I sit on my bed (with a tray underneath). I turn it off every time I'm done using it.

I mostly use 'sleep' mode on my PC and laptop when I won't be using it for a time. Usually this is so I can have it back up and running in a quickie if I need it for something. I'd also never frequently turn a PC off if it didn't have a solid state drive.

That being said it is still good to shut down/restart a PC every now and then if you do leave it on or in sleep most of the time. This helps clear the cache and restart any background processes that might be acting out of wack without you knowing.

As far as it putting stress on a computer by turning it off/on, this was the case with much earlier computers, where frequently turning the components on and off could wear them out, but modern computer parts are robust enough to where that isn't an issue anymore.

I usually log off then turn off my pc, and it’s set to automatically shut off after half an hour of being logged out and no programs running if I forget. Though, I will let it run through the night if I need to. 3d rendering takes time, and my computer isn’t the fastest at it. But yeah, I try to turn it off as often as I can.

I turn it off every time. I only sit by it in the mornings and go through the arena, a local news paper and facebook. If I need it more to play any games or update my goodreads etc it's easily to turn on, it only takes 30 seconds from startbutton til it's ready :). Otherwise I use my phone the rest of the day.

I only rarely use a laptop these days (like, once a month or something!) so I always turn it off afterwards. Mostly I use my phone for everything. I love my phone! My phone gets turned off at night and sometimes when it's on charge (I think it charges more quickly if it's turned off). The laptop is just for things I can't do on my phone and for storing files that I don't need very often.
I haven't had a desktop computer in years. My last one was seven years old when it died. It went out with a bang: it had been playing up so I took it along to the local computer repair place. They were trying to get it working when it went BANG and took out all the electricity in their building! Good old computer, it was always a bit melodramatic

I turn it off at night but leave it on standby in the day

I have a PC, which I turn off when I'm done for the day. I leave it on during the day, unless I know I'm not going to use it anymore before the day after.
My phone almost never is turned off, but it's on perpetual night mode + silent xD

I generally leave it on, but shut it down/restart it every so often; usually it's easier to leave it running than restart it every day. But lately I have been trying to shut it down more often.

I usually leave mine on all the time but I do shut it down completely at least once a week or if I'm going to be gone for a few days.

It takes so long to boot up my work computer that I got into the habit of never shutting any of them down.  I close my laptops and shut off the screens on my desktops but that's it.

If I am leaving it longer than 4h then yes, I turn it off

I always turn my laptop off in the evening. During the day, I use the sleep mode, but I rarely use my laptop until the evening these days unless I'm working from home. My husband never turns his off. :D

Very interesting! I'm glad I asked. I can relate to having a PC that takes forever to boot up, our old one is like that. My rig has SSDs and boots super fast so it's not an issue if I turn it off and need it later.

I'm afraid I have to admit I leave it on... It's not good, I know. However, my PC has always had this weird issue from back around when I got it where it doesn't always boot up properly and it is really slow booting up and then it also doesn't run properly after it has booted up. So whenever it does that, I have to keep on restarting it until it boots up at the proper normal speed. Which can take forever, and get this if I try to shut it off for the Windows updates and it boots back up slow, I won't be back on my PC for many hours because that takes forever.

I always shut down my laptop when I'm done, unless I'm going to use it again shortly (i.e. within the next hour or so).

I used to shut it off at night but my computer is now 5 years old and takes forever to restart so I leave it on and restart it every few days.
When I go back to the US for Xmas, I am buying a new one.

I leave it on. My mom turns off and unplugs ALL of her electronics when she isn't using them...computer mouse, TV, you name it, and it drives me batty. She's afraid there will be an electrical surge during a storm and the house will catch on fire. Or something

I always shut it down. I've found that if leave it on too long, it crashes.

I shut down my PC whenever I'm done using it, it's a heavy duty gaming PC and I don't want to put any unneeded stress on it when not in use! But my laptop I leave on as I use it so often throughout the day.

I always shut down our laptop after I'm done using it. Though it gets very little use due to not having any internet...

I rarely use my laptop, so when I do, it gets shut down right after.

I shut my laptop down because I worry about the impact on the environment and also the potential fire hazard.

I leave my lap top on. But I will shut off my desk top when not using it. I have to update my deck top though. So don't know what is the best way to go? I just love having a desk top! :)

Do anyone know what is the best thing to do for our computers? Off when not using or sleep mode?

I use sleep mode on both my laptop and desktop purely for convenience, and because it of course saves power when it is not in use.

Putting a PC in sleep mode will shut down pretty much all of the components except for the RAM and some USB ports, so it still uses very little power in this state. If configured to do so, the PC can also automatically wake itself up to install Windows updates, which could come in handy, except that it tends to do it in the middle of the night and wake you up if you're in the same room as it, and it can be difficult to disable this "feature" (this can also restart it causing you to lose anything that was up when you put it in sleep mode).

...That being said, I wouldn't frequently shut down a PC if it doesn't have an SSD (Solid State Drive) in it... otherwise that causes a lot of unneeded downtime (if it takes a minute or two to turn back on fully; with an SSD it takes no more than a few seconds). Just not worth it, imo.

Other than the aforementioned convenience/speed, I'm not sure if I can say that one (power off vs sleep) is better than the other. I'd say that it depends on how often you use the desktop.

My ex never ever turned his laptop off because he didn’t want it to update and would lecture me that I was never to turn it off completely.  He would then come to my house and marvel at how fast my gaming PC was, how quiet, envied that I could play games with the picture quality on the highest setting, etc (he could only play on the lowest level where things were just pixelated blobs).

Dude, maybe if you let it update it would solve the vast majority of its problems!  It hadn’t had an update in years so it was barely functional at times.

Both.

In that I shut it down, but it fails to comply 50% of the time and I find out the next time I go to turn it on when it refuses to boot without the cable.

I always shut my laptop down, and unplug it. I'm too afraid of fire to leave it on. :lookround:

I always turn mine off.  I'm paranoid of it overheating or something and causing a fire. Probably I am worried unnecessarily, but it doesn't hurt to be safe :D

Throughout the day if I'm home and leave the room, I put it in sleep mode to save the screen. If I'm leaving the house or going to bed, I turn it off

Yes. I always shut down my work computer at 5pm. I always shut down my personal, home computer if I'm leaving the house, and just before bed.

I think it's silly to leave these things switched on as they're constantly drawing electricity. (Costing you money, and bad for the environment.)

Some people argue that they can't wait for their computer to boot up and/or run updates. However, in those situations I would advise saving up for a new computer as they are (probably) more energy efficient, and a solid state drive eliminates the boot up wait time. :)

If I'm out for more than an hour, I shut it down. Before I go to bed, I shut it down. If I'm out for a few minutes or at dinner, I run maintenance. But I leave it on most of the time during the day  as I'm often on it, if not always.

I shut it down, everytime I'm done with it. Even if that mean I'm going to restart it twice or more a day.
It's important for the computer and for the planet.

I never let any electronic in "sleep" mode, it's way too energivore.
