Title: Netflix series: Toys That Made Us
Post by: SpaceButtPonies on December 27, 2017, 07:55:22 PM
I saw this on Netflix today and I have to say is wow!

As the title says they go way back on toys we grew up with, this show is really entertaining and informitive! Only being 4 episodes in I really hope they do more! Has anyone seen this yet?

I don't want to give away too much just in case of spoilers.

I watched all 4 episodes yesterday, I can't wait for more! It's incredibly interesting to hear how some of these iconic toy lines were created. I'm hoping there will be a pony episode, there's a glimpse of G1 flutter ponies in the cartoon intro. ^.^

Yes we have been enjoying it.  Though it has to be paused every ten minutes to go on another ramble!  ;)

I binged all 4 episodes and loved it!  I was bummed that it was only 4 episodes, but if you listen to the words in the opening theme song it says its an '8 episode docuseries' so I'm hopeful for a MLP episode when they release the next 4 episodes.

I'm also hoping for a pony episode since we saw them in the toy store in the opening animation. :) and a Jem episode.

Oh my gosh, I saw this thread and went to watch this show right away! I really loved it :)
Spoiler
I have only watched the Barbie episode but I loved the detail they went into. I wish it had been longer though! I hope they do a pony episode as well.

I've had to stop numerous times each episode to track down information. These are stories I've never heard of and I love making of/behind the scenes documentaries. Ideas for more episodes:
MLP (of course)
Hot Wheels
Board Games
Video Games
Disney

It was fun to watch! I watched it on christmas eve with my mom while waiting form dad to return. MY mother was a teen in the 80's, but I knew a lot more about He-man than she did  She did tell me about the star wars and gi joe toys she and her step-siblings had growing up though, so it was really interesting.

I would have liked to see them talk about the japanese barbies (unless I was just in the bathroom for that part ) and since MLP was mentioned a few times, I hope they do an episode on it. I followed the show on facebook before it hit netflix, they share collector photos which is really cool!

I haven’t seen this show, but now I have to watch it. It’s cold outside, so sounds like the time to culr up with Netflix...
Hey! Maybe for an mlp episode, they feature some of the arena and trading post members in interviews! In addition to history on ponies of course.

I found this, if its true no mlp episode. Maybe they will do a season 2?

According to their Facebook Fanpage a new 8-episode Netflix series is coming soon. They have shared a picture of their season planning board that let us know the toylines that will star each episode: Star Wars, G.I Joe, Barbie, He-Man, Star Trek, Hello Kitty, Lego and Transformers, of course.
No words on the release date yet, but you can click on the title bar to check out the images and share your thoughts on the 2005 boards

This series is fabulous! I really enjoyed the episodes on Barbie, Star Wars and He-Man / She-Ra.

Spoiler
I did want to throw things when one of the He-Man guys suggested that its possible the decline of the brand happened because little boys felt that He-Man was devalued by little boys once little girls had She-Ra because the moment girls have the same power as boys, that power becomes worthless. In my opinion, the fact that there was He-Man and She-Ra makes MOTU one of the best kids brands ever created, because siblings could actually play together and have some common ground... I had two brothers, so toy lines that had things for both boys and girls were way more popular with us than gender-gated toy lines. It's not that I ever had a problem playing male characters--I played April, Leonardo and Master Splinter when we did Ninja Turtles--but having such a level of equal representation for the sake of fun, rather than extreme politics as it would be about today, was / is refreshing.

I LOVED it! I hope for more as well! I would be extremely surprised if they didnt do a MLP series, especially since its a toy thats still very much alive today (like barbie)
hotwheels sounds really likely as well, and possibly lego, BUT lego already has quite a lot of documentaries so they might pass on that.

But wow I love the history! I was never much of a He-Man fan, but now that I know how it started, I find that so cool!

I've only watched the first two episodes so far but I'm hooked! I really hope they get more seasons. There's so many fascinating stories hidden in the toy industry.

If anyone really loved the Barbie episode, I highly suggest tracking down a copy of Forever Barbie: The Unauthorized Autobiography of a Real Doll. The author was one of the people interviewed so a lot of the same points were brought up but the book goes into a lot more detail. I've wanted an updated version since I read it and I'm so stoked this show came out and covered some of that.

Aside from the obvious MLP choice, I'd love to see them talk about something like Mickey Mouse or Colorforms. Literally only because it would be the perfect excuse to interview Mel Birnkrant, my favorite toy designer.

Me and my family watched this recently and it was amazing! I loved seeing how the toys came about, learning about their designers, etc, but some parts made me either creeped out or mad. In the G.I. Joe episode, the designer that said things like "She is my favorite character because she is sexy" and "I sculpted that so that button was lower" (in this case making the woman toy more revealing) majorly creeped me out, and I think you can guess why. The only parts that made me mad were in the Barbie episode. The first was when one of the ladies was all for destroying companies if it meant Barbie being the only doll like that in the toy aisle. All I could think of was how evil it was to make Barbie and the Rockers before Jem came out! I love Jem, darn it! And all I could think about in the Barbie episode, especially when they were trying to say her proportions were fine because that was the only way clothes would look good, was that girls who played with Barbie have shown they have low body confidence and want to be thinner instead of girls who didn't play with Barbie, who don't really strive to be thinner and are confident in their body. But aside from these details, the overall show was amazing! And I want a pony episode soooo badly!

Mum and me liked these episodes, watching the last one now this one doesn't really relate to us here in the UK, don't think it ever made it big here.

Apparently transformers & lego will be in the second half of this season.

They have also said if they get a second season My little pony is top of their list  :frolic: really hope they get a second season.

This also really disappointed me.
Spoiler
As someone who grew up with MOTU, I actually preferred the He-Man line over the She-Ra line in some ways.  It bothered me that She-Ra wasn't the same scale as the other MOTU female figures like Teela and Sorceress, and that they didn't have the flexibility of ball jointed hips.  She-Ra just looked plain awkward sitting on Swiftwind.  The other, and bigger issue I had with She-Ra/Swiftwind was that they didn't match the cartoon!  This was particularly egregious in the case of Swifty, who was animated as white with orange and blue accents, but made all pink as a toy. :C  She-Ras hair was also kinda annoying, made getting her mask to stay on difficult, and that tiny little sword!  Pretty sure I broke Swifty's reins the day I got him too.  The MOTU stuff was studier and more creative,  consequently I had mostly MOTU figures.

Kinda disappointed there is no mention (yet) of MLP, Rainbow Brite or Strawberry Shortcake-  seems like they are doing one "girls line" for every three "boys lines"

I was mad about that too-  but then the narrators (who are quite good) get to the REAL reason why the line failed-
Spoiler
which was, quite simply- they made tons of extra characters, but not nearly enough Heman and Skeletor dolls.

That was DEFINITELY the issue- my cousins and I had dozens of these dolls, and then Heman broke his leg...  suddenly the entire collection was almost unplayable...

Go on their Facebook page. You will see a post about MLP they are replying to comments, they know lots of people want to see an MLP episode.
It won't be down to them if they get season 2 though, probably netflix as its a netflix original? So would probably need to write into them i guess.
There is a lot of hype about this series though not just on here either. Still 4 more episodes to come too.

I watched this a week or two ago on Netflix and I thought it was great! It was very interesting to see what went into making some of these brands and how close they were to not being a thing at all. It is strange to imagine what the world would have been like without Barbie.

They have not been picked up for a second season yet, but the second half of the first season should drop soon (I hope). The Rock just endorsed them/gave them a plug, so hopefully that will increase views/interest and we will get another season. I have been following them on FB fora while now and they are very responsive to fans. I keep suggesting MLP and SSC episodes.

I'm so glad to see that others have discovered this little Netflix gem too!

I'll admit it...I binge watched it    and hoped the entire time that the ponies in the intro were a sigh of things to come
It seems I wasn't the only one  ;)

I've always been fascinated with the back stories and intricate details of how things are created/built. I recommended my hubby watch it...we ended up binge watching it a second time   lol

He thought it was incredibly well done as well and especially enjoyed seeing how all the deals were made, or not. Some of our beloved childhood characters came crazy close to never happening!

Desperate for a MLP episode as are we all I'm sure! The one I liked so far was Masters of the Universe.

I just binge watched this show since I don't have Netflix and I'm visiting my parents who do.  I though it was really interesting and fun.  Of course, I hope they do MLP and other girls brands also.  Just so long as they give it the same level of respect and love as they did these first episodes and *dont* spend too long on FiM or bronies.

While no second season has been announced yet, Volk-Weiss is confident he has oodles of additional material if Netflix wants to move forward. He says the reaction has been extremely positive from both collectors and non-collectors, and plenty of fans have been reaching out to him about plenty of other toys—Hot Wheels, Power Rangers, WWF figures.

“If I’m ever found dead in a ditch at some con, ask the president of the My Little Pony fan club for an alibi,” he jokes. But if things do move forward, there’s a clear first episode for any hypothetical season two.

“Turtles [as in Teenage Mutant Ninja], without a doubt, is what people asked about the most,” Volk-Weiss says. “People were repeatedly asking me, ‘Why would you do a Star Trek episode and not a Turtles? I’m pretty sure if I was watching the show I’d be wondering that, but I did Star Trek because I love Star Trek. I didn’t know if I’d get more episodes, and I wanted to do Star Trek.”

So what was that comment about?  Did he just pull MLP out of the air?  Was he referencing someone specific?  Or has he been hearing from a few more forceful fans?

It's original content financed by Netflix, so I doubt they'd take it down.  They own the rights.

It could be.  It just seems odd since this show so clearly focuses on the original creation of the toys, and less on the media.  I guess if and when they do a mLP episode and half of it focuses on FiM then we will know.  Hmm, maybe we should do some pestering.  Leading off with the dangers of anachronism!

Very interesting. That sounds like the work of Bronies, honestly. I mean, maybe we have some people here who have been pestering them? It sure isn't me, though (but now that you mention it, I think I could do some pestering...).

No way is he talking about FIM or Bronies-  FIM ponies are NOT the "Toys that Made Us" -

Maybe all the people on the facebook page asking for My Little Pony

I think there have been a few that have contacted him regarding MLP.  I know I did and got a response back saying, it would definitely be a possibility if they get another season.  Netflix would be crazy not to do another season.

Just saw on Facebook that the show was renewed for a 2nd season.  I'm really hoping that MLP is one of the first episodes!

I did too!  So, excited. It's supposed to be another 2 months before the second half of season one airs though.  Takes so long...

I'm sure it takes a while to get all those interviews with all those people.  At least they know now and can start lineing things up for the future.

Loved Season 1!
Hubby and I just watched the first two episodes of Season 2.
He's been teasing me because they didn't put MLP in this time, but I have faith that it's still going to happen
I think MLP was, and is, too big for them not to do it. But who knows what kind of hoops they may have to jump through to make it happen?

I watched the Hello Kitty episode last night even though I'm not a really big Hello Kitty fan. It was really interesting. :)

I just watched the Hello Kitty episode with my Japanese mom who was a kid in the 70's. We loved it, since we both grew up with Hello Kitty :) She kept on saying, "I had that! I remember that character!" etc. Between her and my wisecracking boyfriend, it was honestly hard to follow along, lol.

I've enjoyed the entire series especially for the toys I didn't have (LEGO and Hello Kitty).

I liked the first part of season 1 (or season 2, whichever the older episodes are) better than the newer ones.  I liked the ST and Transformers ones well enough.  Didn't get through the Legos one.  Will have to try to finish it later.  Hello Kitty was interesting.  Just kind of bummed that it seems that it was mainly "boy" toys this time.  Ik Legos technically isn't just boys, now but I just didn't find the episode as "riveting" as the previous ones.  Cannot wait to see what they do for the next season granted they do one.

I'll never get over the fact that Barbie had her origins in BILD magazine (basically a German The Sun, a hateful gossip rag) and was pretty much a s*x object before Mattel stole her and transformed her into a rolemodel for young girls but with the same crazy proportions

I didn't watch the episode on Barbie, but I hope they mentioned BILD-Lilli.

I'm watching the one on Hello Kitty right now and still waiting for them to mention Nijntje, the Dutch bunny girl Hello Kitty was stol err based on...

They lightly touched upon BILD Lilli... very lightly, but it still came as a surprise to some parents I talked to, who watched the show with their kids and had some ... awkward conversations during the Barbie episode.

And Nijntje is Miffy, right?  I have a few Miffy books and items, I LOVE her too!

I love this series! The Barbie and He-Man episodes were really interesting. I sat down and watched the Transformers and Hello Kitty episodes the other day. The Hello Kitty one was pretty fascinating. I learned a lot. The Transformers one I had mixed feelings about. They skipped a ton of information about the franchise, but I guess they had to. They only lightly discussed Beast Wars and then jumped right to the Michael Bay films. That's skipping over like 6 toy reboots. Either way, I love seeing people talk about toys and especially industry people who are really passionate about it.

Can't wait for a My Little Pony episode!

We may need to keep this in mind when the mlp episode does come around.  I'm sure there is no way they will be able to get in all the info that we would like for them to cover.  They may skip right over g2 and g3.

Miffy>>>>>>Hello Kitty

If a MLP episode ever gets made I kinda fear for it, it will most likely have a 'sad' ending for me with how G4 is and the 'fanbase' it attracted...

So I got hooked yesterday and watched the Hello Kitty, Transformers and Star Trek ones. I skipped Star Wars, Barbie and GI Joe because I already know about the first ones and don't care about the latter.

I understand a documentary is never 100% neutral. But leaving out the entire Nijntje/Miffy thing was disappointing to me. So many people think Miffy is a HK copy and it's not true. I thought mayyybe they had a nod to that when the Sanrio creator was like "oh maybe I should make a rabbit next..."

HK's "mama" is so eccentric! I loved that. This is the kind of industry people I love to see more of. She was so frank about HK having no mouth.

All of it is very US-centric so that's probably why the TF episode skipped the anime series. I already knew a bunch of stuff about it but it was still cool to see the back and forth between the US and Japan.

Also hoping for MLP. They said it's an 8 part series but they show MLP in the intro.

If they do one, I hope it's without bashing it as girly stuff and focusing on Bronies. This is about toys, so they will have to focus on the creation of G1 the most and interview the people from back then. But I assume they will get Lauren Faust in there and other people talking about G4.
I was kinda shocked to see Paris Hilton in the HK episode. So we will probably see some D-list celeb talking about how much he relates to Rainbow Dash

Is there going to be a season three? The opening credits song says it a 8 part documentary series and they sort of done that....

I was REALLY hoping for MLP as well.

Indeed, she was the most interesting part of that episode and I would've like to have seen more about her life. I like that she is clearly unafraid to still live and dress how she likes even in her 60s.

I have to be honest... The more I think about it, the more I DON'T want an MLP episode... -_-

Yes, they have confirmed that they where renewed for more episodes.  The seasons thing is confusing though.  Cause only recently have people started calling these last 4 episodes "season 2".  I thought all 8 episodes where season 1, there just ended up being a sizable gap between the first part and second part.

I'm surprised they didn't have Hot Wheels for the first season. I'm hoping they'll fix that with the next one. Besides, they've already covered most of the big action figure lines.

The show just posted on Facebook a picture of some of the staff posing in front of Hasbro holding a sign for season 3.  Seeing as they already did Transformers (and I don't see them delving into board games just yet) it has to be My Little Pony!

I would love to see what possessed them to drastically change the looks from G1 to G2 or G3 to G3.5 and if they regret it
I would also love to see a spotlight on the designers, especially for G3. And I want to see why G2 worked overseas but not in the US.

But Hasbro also owns Nerf, Play Doh, and Mr. Potato Head. There's enough that they could do a whole season of just Hasbro.

Looks like their panel at SDCC is over, and one website posted that season 3 will include My Little Pony! I don't think there's been an official announcement, though.

Update: it's official! Next season will include Power Rangers, Wrestling, TMNT, and My Little Pony!
