Title: Excited- Judging at a pet rat show next Saturday!
Post by: Shlugh on February 12, 2012, 10:08:23 AM
I guess it's a bit different way to spend a day.

My daughter and I are judging the pet rat class at the Scottish Rat Club show next Saturday, and are really looking forward to it. I am a bit nervous though, as it is the first time I've ever judged.

We've got 10 pet rats at the moment, all rescues. Last show, my daughter's pet won 4 firsts, including best overall pet in show. (she's only 5, and handles this rat all by herself!) Judging means we can't show in pets this time, but we have a couple that we are entering in varieties.

Varieties is where the rat is judged on conformation, type, markings and colour. Pet is more about rats in excellent conditon and their temperament.

We're also going to have a go at the rat agility again, as that is a big riot. Imagine the type of stuff you see an agility dog do, weave poles, A-frames and all that stuff in miniature on a table top, and you get the idea. :P

I know there are a lot of rat loving pony collectors, so I thought I would share.

Does anyone else show their rats?

OH MY GOSH. I show my dog in agility - I HAVE to go look up rat agility...it must be hilarious. *goes off to youtube*

Oh, and good luck on the judging!! If it's anything like dog and horse shows, then I bet it's super fun!

Rat agility? Oh god that seems so much harder to train than dog or horse agility. O___o
Sounds fun though! I'd totally watch a show if I was anywhere near one.

How Neat!  I never knew there were rat showing contests!  Have fun showing!  I bet watching the agility will be fun.  I wish I could see that!

My mother had a pet rat once.  She was sooo sweet!  I liked her alot!  It's funny to think of a rat as a pet but they really do make really great pets and they are really smart too.

Congrats! I used to show rats at pet level, I got Second BIS Pet at one NERS show with my lovely Moss and won the agility with Mulan who was the cleverest rat I have ever owned...it was my proudest rat-mummy day ever!

I'll try get some video clips of the agility, and pictures for the show for sure. It is a laugh a minute.

We practice agility at home with courses built out of lego bricks.

Rats are excellent pets all round and very good with children. That's cool you have been to shows too Noasar, and didn't you do well? I've only ever got a second in agility.

That sounds like a blast!

I loved my rats so much (my user name is a nickname I gave one of my girls, Zenna, when she was alive)!  I have never been to a rat show though.  My girl Lani would probably have done well, she was a gorgeous little thing  :)  And my little boy Leo was handsome as well, but neutering probably would have disqualified him?

I've never heard of rat agility, but I have heard of rabbit showjumping. We tried to do that at college but the rabbit we used wasn't having any of it. He was more interested in just lying down on the grass.

Sounds like a fun day though, have fun!

Zennabug,

Neutering would disqualify him for varieties, but he could still have entered in pets, where it's about the friendly personality and cuddle value.

I've been sitting all night to tonight going through my judging notes. Tomorrow night (after a 10 hour work shift) I finish up bathing and nail clipping my show rats, then an early start and drive over to help set up before the show on Saturday morning.
I'll post a new thread with some pictures and videos after the show for everyone that is curious.

Zennabug,

Neutering would disqualify him for varieties, but he could still have entered in pets, where it's about the friendly personality and cuddle value.

Oh my goodness, he was the sweetest, squishiest, boy ever!  :lovey:  When I first brought him home, he couldn't live with my girls yet (he had to be neutered and then wait a month to "dry up"), so I put an old towel in his cage for snuggling.  He would drag it around the cage to where he wanted to sleep, so I eventually cut it into smaller pieces.  He carried it around like a blankie and wouldn't sleep without it!  He carried around his blankie until a couple months after he moved in with the girls and decided that he only needed real snuggle partners.  I was actually a little sad when he outgrew the blankie, it was so cute while it lasted.  He also used to chase his tail and play tag with my hand.  I loved him so much, he was the best rat I ever owned.  He died last summer from a big tumor  :(

Here he is with his blankie
