Title: Tell me about your favourite music!
Post by: Broken Irishwoman on December 18, 2019, 07:23:51 AM
I think it's time for one of these again!

I have no idea what everyone here likes to listen too, and I'm curious. Do you have a specific genre you enjoy? Music from a specific country? You may also list your favourite bands and artists, or maybe you only listen to one band or artist? Tell me!

I'll start! I suppose it's obvious that The Cranberries are my absolute favourite band. I've been a huge fan since 1994 (I was only 7 then, but Zombie hit me like a brick), they would be the band I know everything about.

Some of my other favourite bands and artists:

Spoiler
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Christy Moore
Luka Bloom
Amorphis
Loreena McKennitt
John Frusciante
(Old) Within Temptation
Midnattsol (except the last album)
Moody Blues (especially In Search Of The Lost Chord)
Melanie C (though it's very hit or miss what I like and what I don't)
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Songs written by Huub Oosterhuis, performed by my favourite choir

...And probably a couple more that I forgot to mention.

As far as genres go, I would say that I mostly enjoy (alternative) rock, 90's music, metal, traditional Irish music and guitar based singer/songwriters (like Ralph McTell and Harvey Andrews).

I should probably also mention that I am super random when it comes to my favourite music. My music folder is also filled with "loose" songs, meaning that I only know or love one or a few songs from certain artists. Just a few of my favourite "loose" songs:

Spoiler
4 Non Blondes - What's Up
Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
Jeff Wayne & Justin Hayward - Forever Autumn
Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger
Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next
The Buoys - Give Up Your Guns
Crowded House - Into Temptation
Marmalade - Reflections Of My Life
Kansas - Dust In The Wind
Tremeloes - Silence Is Golden
Novastar - Closer To You
Alanis Morissette - Uninvited
Ozzy Osbourne - Dreamer
Vitamin C - Graduation Song (Yes, really! This one is a guilty please. :P )
Libido - Tres
Don McLean - Vincent
Harvey Andrews - Soldier
Jim Croce - Time In A Bottle
Apocalyptica - Hope
Sam Cooke - Wonderful World
David Bowie - Space Oddity
Vandenberg - Burning Heart
Kayak - Ruthless Queen
R.E.M. - Losing My Religion
Meredith Brooks - B**** (Not sure if the title is allowed :P )

...And the list goes on and on!

So enough about me, what about you? :water:

I'm in love with Norwegian folk music, which is only natural since I play the Hardanger fiddle. But it's a little awkward when someone asks me what my favorite song is, and it's something that has never been recorded since folk music is handed down orally.
It's especially fun when there's a folktale (or a true story!) connected to a song. You have serious, mystical ones like the weeping march, and then there's the shoulder-bite: tl;dr some guy heard that song and really, really liked it, and expressed it by biting the fiddler in the shoulder. Truly a tale as old as time

I listen primarily to metal, death metal in particular. My favorite band is called Septicflesh but don't let the name fool you :P They are amazing and record with the Prague Symphony Orchestra and added a boys choir to their last album. Here's one of my favorite songs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8szotFoLe9M) (I promise it is safe for the Arena :P )

Some of my other fav bands are Decapitated (again, the name... doesn't really reflect the subjects of the music, at least, not anymore), Sadist (they are very jazzy, technical metal and yeah again with name thing), Krisiun, Kataklysm, The Crown, Carcass... I could go on.

But I also listen to a lot of other things. Skinny Puppy is a favorite band as is Killing Joke. I like ska too. Sometimes classical (Chopin is my fav).

Really the only kinds of music I don't or won't listen to are country and gospel. Other than that, I'm open. I like the Chili Peppers too :)

I guess I was born to rock. I literally wore out my Dad's Queen 8-tracks. Ozzy, yes, Steppenwolf, fine by me. CCR, Zeppelin, BOC, Steve Miller, Eagles. I like a lot of alt and hard rock bands. If you understand the abbreviations then welcome to the club!
Breaking Benjamin
Tantric (I love Hugo, met him a few years back!)
Fuel
Puddle of Mudd
5FDP
Seether
Stonesour
Alice in Chains
And so many more!

Blessid Union of Souls... looking at 22 years of appreciating this band, I've had the pleasure of seeing them a dozen times. Also had an insane midnight karaoke with the lead singer to Bohemian Rhapsody. I truly can die happy at any time...

You would never in a million years guess that every day at work I listen to Disney's Aladdin soundtrack. I also really like BSB...

In terms of genres, I mainly go for folk (really eager to dig deeper into that at the moment), drone music and a bit of vaporwave, with some rock and/or metal mostly left over from my teenage years. Generally, I tend to get into particular albums or songs rather than following a band, I'm just way too picky with music. Off the top of my head, my favourites are...
Mazzy Star
Vashti Bunyan
Leveret
Anne Briggs
Nick Drake
Sam Sweeney
Far (particularly At Night We Live, that album has some very special memories attached to it)
Alkaline Trio
Finch (mainly the weirder stuff from 'Say Hello to Sunshine' onwards)
yourcodenameis:milo

And as for straggling albums, I really love...
Sigur Ros - Valtari
Shima 33 - Museum
Rhucle - Yellow Beach
In the Branches - Expanse Sessions
Daliah - Girlish Boys
Off Land - Slow Waves
Whalez - Mysterious Aura
Sunn O))) - Kannon
The soundtrack from Unravel

And when it comes to straggling songs, some of my favourites are:
Per-Olov Kindgren's version of Canon in D on the classical guitar
Huw Roberts - Oppela
James Reynolds - Mind's Eye
Gratitude from the flOw soundtrack
Opeth - Ghost of Perdition
Fen - The Warren
Industries of the Blind - I Just Wanted to Make You Something Beautiful
John Molineux and Annie Power's version of The Lowlands of Holland
Moondog - Ode to Venus
and Sandy Denny's version of The Quiet Joys of Brotherhood

So yes, quite a mixed bag. XD

I'm a metalhead but I mainly listen to band with female singers: Within Temptation, Nightwish, After Forever, (old) Leave's Eyes, the Dark Element, Drain STH, Serenia, Lacuna Coil, Delain, Arch Enemy etc.

But my topmost favorite band is Summoning, a Symphonic Black Metal Band (or duo) from Austria. (Almost) all of their songs are about Tolkiens Arda. Favorite song is Land of the Dead that is inspired by the Lay of Leithan, an unfinnished poem of Beren and Luthien.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69pJYTGJldw

I also listen to what some call "celtic" music; Enya, Clannad, Loreena McKennit.. Again, mostly females.

I also have a playlist called Random Favorites, where I put songs I like that are from other artistic genres but are in a certain mood. There are songs from Sia, Beyonce, Niklas Strömstedt, Madonna, Ed Sheeran, Alan Walker, Melanie C etc put together with some songs of the artists mention above that fit in. Songs that are in a way that fit the mood I'm in during fall and spring.

My tastes vary wildly but mostly settle somewhere between Bedroom Pop and Really Obscure EDM Genres That Make Me Sound Pretentious.
I don't like dubstep, but I do like bassline, bass house, french house (really looking to explore this one this break). Really though, I just adore mashcore, gabber, schranz (also looking to explore this one this break), frenchcore, breakcore (but it has to SLAP), j-core...there's probably a few subgenres I'm skipping over. It's sad that a lot of the more hardcore EDM producers end up having committed atrocities. I'm going to throw some of my faves in a spoiler. A lot of it is from Pinkamena Party.
Spoiler
Basashi-NextLevelDrp
Party's Over VIP-Spikey Wikey
Heaven is a Glue Factory-Fiveskin
Twilight Causes Eternal Winter-Inklingbear
Yeah Yeah Babe Back it up Girl Real Nice Very Sexy-Futret
Sky Above-Bandetto
B A B B A-$44,000 (I don't care if this one was made as a joke it's good and just needs a re-mixing)
The 4Lung Summer Album. All of it.
I also really like Lauren Bausfield and her various musical expenditures. Mr. Bungle's first and third albums are great too, I can't get into the second one though. I also really like Lemon Demon.

Gladly!

So first and foremost I'll go over my favorite band. My favorite band is clammbon. They're a bit hard to describe... they're technically pop, but pretty jazz inspired. They've only got three members. A vocalist/keyboardist, a bassist, and a drummer. Their music is generally really chill and catchy. I love them so much, someday I'd like to learn piano/keyboard and it's all thanks to this band. Here's a few select songs of theirs:

-Chicago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBO-a4Qkw8k)
-Re-Ame (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9wgmwjgpBo)
-Lush Life! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3lCCKXe998)

Alright so... other music I listen to. My tastes are pretty varied, but my favorite overall genre is prog. Progressive rock, progressive metal, etc. Here's some prog artists I listen to (so far, I have a long list of more I'd like to get into). I've linked a song for each artist, if you click on the name. I'll split between pop/popular music and classical. My favorite pop music genres are classic (70s and before) Soul/R&B, Progressive/Psychedelic rock, British Folk/Rock, 70s Soft Rock, and Baroque pop. I also love "brass rock" a short-lived genre in the late 60s and early 70s which was progressive rock with touches of jazz and lots of trumpet/trombone/saxophone!

My pop music interests are rooted a lot in the 60s/70s because I like the instrumentation in that era more than anything since. Bands/groups regularly had a variety of instruments in their music and it was great.

On the classical side, my favorite eras are Baroque, French Impressionism, Renaissance, Classic, and Medieval. I also have a fondness for late 19th century/early 20th century classical (aside from French Impressionism, which I already mentioned specifically - composers like Stravinsky, Holst, and Vaughan-Williams).

I started out with Baroque and Classic, with a little Romanticism. But as the years have passed by I have really gravitated toward Baroque and before alongside that 19th/early 20th century pocket of music. I think it could be best described this way for each:

Spoiler
Baroque: Nice, very non-bombastic instrumentation. Oboe was featured very prominently (my instrument!), and I honestly prefer the sound of the harpsichord over the piano. And musically - lots of counterpoint. Baroque composers also used minor keys more than major keys, which I adore.

Early Music (Medieval and Renaissance): This music took me some getting used to, especially the earlier music with instruments. But now I love those instruments, and I also love the entirety of it - the modes, the unique cadences, the dissonances everywhere (with pieces oftentimes cadencing very dissonant). Also, it has interesting polyphonic textures like Baroque.

French Impressionism: Debussy himself said that his music was purely about beauty. Impressionists were about making music that sounded pleasing, although it was of course, still very much deeper than that. I really adore the move away from tonality and a return to modality.

Other late 19th/20th century Classical: It's hard to lump these composers together. Vaughan Williams and Holst are both fairly similar in being English who took in a lot of British Folk influence. Stravinsky had three different phases, the first being the most famous - Primitivism. When I first heard Stravinsky it was just clashing for me, but much like early music, I grew to love it.

Okay, so seriously, I was just going to mention why I liked each era, but then I went off into a tiny musicologist diversion there, sorry. Lol.

So here's some of my favorite songs and later pieces:

I limited myself to one song per artist in the pop section so I could get a fuller gambit of artists, but still, this is still just SOME of the songs and artists I like. I tried. lol

Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart) - The Stylistics (Soul/R&B)
The Unquiet Grave - Gryphon (British Folk)
Blue Ridge Mountains - Fleet Foxes (Indie Folk/Pop)
Light My Fire - The Doors (Psychedelic Rock)
A Visit to Newport Hospital - Egg (Progressive/Psychedelic Rock)
Beginnings - Chicago (Brass Rock)
Banks of the Nile - The Owl Service (British Folk Rock)
Incarnation of Logos - Eloy (Progressive/Psychedelic Rock)
If - Bread (Soft Rock)
I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song - Jim Croce (Soft Rock)
Just My Imagination - The Temptations (Soul/R&B)
Stop! In the Name of Love - The Supremes (Soul/R&B)
A Change is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke (Soul/R&B)
The Blacksmith - Steeleye Span (British Folk Rock)
Our Mutual Friend - The Divine Comedy (Chamber/Baroque Pop)
In Orbit - Wobbler (Symphonic/Progressive Rock)
All Things Are Quite Silent - Midwinter (British Folk/Rock)
Firth of Fifth - Genesis (Symphonic/Progressive Rock)
I Need You - America (Soft Rock)
Ooo Baby Baby - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (Soul/R&B)
Too Late to Turn Back Now - Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose (Soul/R&B)
If I Fell - The Beatles (Pop)

If you would like to see a more comprehensive list, I actually created a YouTube playlist (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwa1dgrgAv6Uo0U0DNdpHw964GttUlvAJ) not too long ago.
Now onto Classical and Early Music:

Oboe Concerto in D Minor - II. Adagio - Alessandro Marcello (Baroque) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0jNtvTr5AU) (I love the whole concerto, but this movement is simply too gorgeous)
The whole last half or so of the last Act of Dido and Aeneas - Henry Purcell (Baroque Opera) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtAoWwKqUG8&list=PLwa1dgrgAv6XGwrg95N8jwDDMzudlIjAA&index=3) (It is opera, but it is so beautiful. Dido's Lament is famous for a reason, but every phase is amazing.)
O Sacrum Convivium - Thomas Tallis (Renaissance) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIMWc88iat8)
Resvellies Vous - Guillaume DuFay (Early Renaissance) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ljKPRsveIk)
Requiem - Gabriel Faure (late Romanticism) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E67pjXAyQs&list=PLwa1dgrgAv6XGwrg95N8jwDDMzudlIjAA) (I shared one movement, but the whole thing is amazing!)
Art of Fugue: Contrapunctus 1 - Johann Sebastian Bach (Baroque) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8EMwEFZXOE)
Clarinet Concerto in A Major - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk8BmXvkIWg&list=PLwa1dgrgAv6XGwrg95N8jwDDMzudlIjAA&index=9) (Clarinet students would hate me for bringing this one up, but this is one of the first classical pieces I fell in love with and it is good)
Rose, Liz, Printemps - Guillaume de Machaut (Medieval) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4Nrd-4Sx-k)
Lasso! Di Donna - Francesco Landini (Medieval) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqQPfBKItqI) (And by a pop artist, too! She does a great job, this is actually a good performance and doesn't sound pop-like in anyway.
Nocturnes: No. 1 Nuages - Claude Debussy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhqHny34uCk) (French Impressionism)
The Rite of Spring - Part 2: Mystic Circles of the Young Girls - Igor Stravinsky (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i2XOmQd-4o) (Primitivism/Early 20th Century)
English Folk Song Suite - Ralph Vaughan Williams (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0sC4xbyT5c) (Early 20th Century)

*Takes a deep breath* Okay, that's enough for now!

I enjoy 80's and 90's country music but I have a wide variety of other music on my iPod too. Everything from country music and Broadway show soundtracks to pop music and even a couple songs in French and Japanese. :D I would list a few absolute favorites but my post would be really long.

My number 1 love will always be Jim Steinman, known as the songwriter of Bat out of Hell, Total Eclipse of the Heart, the German musical Tanz der Vampire, and many other more obscure things. I am the person who happily listens to scratchy recordings of his 1969 musical The Dream Engine and knows all the words. In other words, I am happily obsessed :)

Rock music was my first love, but I've since branched out into punk-rock, classical and a bit of pop, to say nothing of that time I found a pile of old gramophone records and discovered Marlene Dietrich, Doris Day, Ruby Murray and loads of random jazz! I also love European musical theatre (Tanz der Vampire, various Dracula musicals, that sort of thing), and I am a huge fan of Egyházi Géza, a Hungarian musical actor (I think he's released CDs but I've never been able to get them so I get my fix via YouTube and the Vámpírok Bálja cast recording).

Here's the bands/singers/composers/musicians I have on my phone at the moment:
(My music app has put them alphabetically) As you can see, it's a bit mixed....
ABBA
Amy Macdonald
Baccara (sometimes you just need disco songs sung by French sisters)
Betty Curse
Blondie
Bonnie Tyler
Doris Day
The Dubliners
Egyházi Géza
Ellen Foley
Enya
Frank Sinatra
Gheorghe Enescu (early 20th cent. Romanian composer and violinist, his second Romanian Rhapsody is my all-time favourite piece of music)
George Thorogood & the Destroyers
Green Day
Jim Steinman!!!! <3
Joan Jett & the Black Hearts
The Kinks
Madonna
Maria Tănase (early 20th cent. Romanian singer and actress. Sort of like a Romanian Édith Piaf)
Marlene Dietrich <3
Matt Fishel <3
Meat Loaf
Queen (Freddie Mercury *swoon*)
Peter Dawson
Phil Harris (voice of Disney's O'Malley the Alley Cat, also recorded some awesome comedy jazz-type songs)
The Pogues
Rainbow
REO Speedwagon
Roxy Music
Ruby Murray
The Seekers (my grandparents really liked this band so I listen to it sometimes to remind me of them)
Siouxsie & the Banshees
Starship
Steve Barton
The Strawbs
Tony Christie (bit of a guilty pleasure, his songs are so flippin' catchy)
Transsylvania Phoenix
Transvision Vamp
Wagner (can't go wrong with things like the Tannhäuser Overture and the Ride of the Valkyries!)

And that's before we get onto my growing selection of Disney songs and theme-tunes for Monster High, Ever After High, DC Super Hero Girls etc....oh and of course the Italian MLP theme. 🎶 Volaaaa! Mio mini pony! 🎶

I don't have a single preferred music genre, I listen to everything from classical to dubstep, although I would say that usually it is something related to rock or metal (not as much as it used to, though). I also tend to gravitate towards older cult classics, like the 80s or 90s hits, sometimes older. Recently I've been listening to a lot of bands I used to be seriously into when I was younger, like Iron Maiden, Nightwish, Edguy, Avantasia or Children of Bodom. I also own a small physical collection of music on vinyls and CDs, part of which is presented below:

My choice is country but I also like almost anything with a good beat to it. I do not like slow music, rap, blues, jazz R&B.

Everything! Florence + The Machine is my favourite but I also listen to everything from Tool to Bach. Very much a  Rock/Alternative girl.
It's quicker to list what I'm not into: Jazz, Country and Rap.
