Title: the symbol of greek Easter Candle pony "Lambaditsa"
Post by: Ponyland on March 06, 2019, 03:29:15 PM
I'm having the flu and it is boring.  :snore:
We ended up having an interesting discussion on FB about what Lambaditsas symbol pictures, and after staring on pictures of several blurry symbols, and one strong but in a difficult angle, I started to see bows wrapping the candles. I know that the blur has been interpreted as a wreath before, but I have never felt like it matched the greek easter theme.   ^^;

I made a quick drawing on my phone of what I see when looking at the symbol. It's not exactly accurate, because I painted it with my finger, lol. :art:

Greek easter candles with pretty bows seams to be a thing, so I kind of feel like it fits the easter theme better.. I don't know if this has been suggested before? Does anyone have a clear image from the side of her symbol that isn't blurred?

Having never seen this pony in real life (I don't think, I think I've only seen Ladybird), the only thing I can add is that they did a candle pony thing in the nineties sometime. So that would make a lot of sense, esp with the other image you posted...

Although the pony thing they did in the nineties...I'm not quite sure what you'd call that, I don't know if it's another variation on the theme?

Oooh the bows on the candles would work! Bows hasn't been suggested before, it's been believed that the candles were sat on a wreath. The wreath is symbol too, there is a loaf called Tsoureki that's eaten at Easter.

All the Easter candles I've been gifted have had pretty ribbons and decorations on them ^.^

I’m glad that you think that it would work. 😊
I have seen pictures of the tsoureki bread, but it looks like the tradition is to stick read eggs in it, and not candles?  :wonder:
The bows makes sence to me, since it is a tradition, and that I can actually see the bows now. I have never been able to see the  wreath/bread at all in the symbol, even though I have been wondering about it for many, many years.  ^.^

Taffeta, the greek easter packed mocs are so cool! I hope to ad one to my collection one day.  :lovey:

Edited to add:

It’s also the matter of the colour of the symbol. Red flames and red bows on blue candles makes sence, but a red wreath or bread does not really in my opinion.

The red is indeed symbolic :)

The bread doesn’t have candles stood on it! It’s got red eggs in it, just like you said :)

I’m trying to recall what my Greek friend said about wreathes and Easter. It was more than just the bread woven into the shape of a wreath with red eggs. I’m sure it was a wreath that was made from plants/foliage, an Easter wreath. It was quite a number of years ago -_-

Can any of our Greek members help out?

We need someone who had one of these ponies as a child and can remember what the symbols looked like!

At least we’ve moved on from thinking her symbols were a Birthday cake

My Lambaditsa is put away, otherwise I would check to see if her symbols are clear enough to tell.  Pretty sure they are not.  She is pretty bled out on symbols if I remember correctly.  Definitely an interesting hypothesis and well founded.

I couldn't make the pink blur into a wreath either! That always made me think of a Santa Lucia crown which is not an Easter thing lol! I think candles with bows makes more sense than wreath!

Maybe Unicorngusty on MLPTP could help if she's still around.
Based on this post she made back in 2010 when she found a perfect Lambaditsa MIP with perfect eyes and symbols.

I saw a Lambaditsa recently for sale with symbols less bled-out than usual.  It was still hard to tell what was underneath the candles, but it looked like there were little halos of light beams coming out from the candle flames, which was a detail I had not been aware of previously.  I wish I remembered where I saw it so I could go back to take a closer look under the candles.

I recall seeing that too! I didn’t save the pictures either, I wasn’t really thinking at the time

Too bad the seller didn't get a nice pic of the whole symbol, but I'd be willing to say OP is reaaaallllly close with her design!

Thanks Pkw. It was an opportunistic bid, never thought I would win, super stoked I did thou. I didn't look very closely at the photos until after I won, I had a mild panic attack when I went to pay and actually had a closer look and saw symbols.. I thought for a minute someone had drawn them on since I am so accustomed to seeing nothing there just blue lines and a few pink splotches.

YAY that's awesome, congratulations from my side too! I hope she arrives safe and sound from Bulgaria at NZ. And better pictures would be so generous.

I got lambaditsa in hand :) Her symbols are still hard to make out but the ops post is pretty close. I do however think upon seeing her that the design was a reef rather than bows.
Although ops design is very very close, the only difference is directly under the 2 other candles, the second marking is much smaller in real life (this is the only difference). I will post pics asap

Honestly I can't see Ponyland's design in your pictures... even if I want to... I meant to see I see a bow under the middle candle yes but the designs under the left and right candle are different.

The design was a good guess before we had better pictures, but I tend to agree.  There might be a bow below the central candle, but the masses of color on either side seem more vertical stacks or perhaps parts of a wreath than a bow pattern.

Thank you Nhal, this is the Lambaditsa with the best-preserved symbols I have ever seen and it is nice to have good photos of her.

I have a Lambaditsa where the symbol on *one* side- the bows, anyway- is relatively good...
My photos aren't the best because my camera phone sucks- but I'd like to share what little I can offer.

I don't know how to insert the pix here, though: If I select the image button, it inserts something like "image/image" into my text box, but doesn't have me actually select any images.

Any advice / instructions?

You need to upload the image to another website first, and then stick the image url inbetween the image tags. For example:

[img]-insert image URL here-[ /img]

So basically, click the little image option, and then put the url between the tags it puts in the text box. Personally I use imgur as an external site for my photos since it's pretty easy to upload ^u^ Hope that helped!
