Title: Prototype ponies you wished made it in to mass production
Post by: Ponyfan on August 17, 2018, 07:25:07 PM
Hi,

I've been watching a lot of the MLP commercials lately and a lot of them feature prototype ponies that were changed by the time they mass produced.

The Brush and Grow Princess ponies feature a different pose Star Gleamer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjjOtweYTxU

What prototype ponies would you have liked to see mass produced? I think Baby Truly would have been a big seller.

Baby Shady (regular eyes version) and Paradise (the one from the UK catalogue, that was meant to come with the estate.)

Also, Songster and Player with wings. Still not over that change :( The comics always showed them winged.

Star Gleamer in that pose is awesome too though.

Unicorn baby truly has always been a favorite of mine! I’m also super fond of the red streak in magic stars hair in that same catalogue picture. Purple twist with gold hair unicorn biology hop, and Pegasus skipity doo from the backcard art work have also always been wants.

Also peek a boo style taf babies!!!

Oh, also not technically ponies but to be sold with pony friends would be the dolls to be sold with the pony friends

Also the baby birthday boy ponies!

Baby Truly; she is my favourite pony so to have a genuine baby would be so super amazingly awesome! And regular baby Sundance (without the BBE). Also Whizzer in Masquerade's pose: I prefer Masquerade's pose. And I always thought that Sprinkles looked better and made more sense as a blue pony. I don't know why they changed their minds on that one.

I wish they had kept Regentropfens prototype symbol! It looks so much nicer with the sun on the right side of the cloud rather than below it, and with the rain drops being below the cloud like in your classic rain cloud drawing ): Nachtlicht was going to have four small stars rather than three big ones too.
I also love some of the concepts for the Irresistibles!!! I'd kill for the transparent ones with plastic beads inside.
Also blue Sprinkles! Oh gosh I wish it had been produced. Also the collectors pose Bubbles would have deserved it's own release besides the regular Bubbles, atleast as a nirvana variant. :/ It had such nice colours. I also prefer the prototype Dance 'n Prance ponies poses.

That's interesting that the comics had them with wings. :) The artists must have seen the prototype ponies and drew the comic ponies  based on those.

@Ponyfan - yeah, they often did that. It's why Baby Splashes has purple hair (like the US one, not the European release), why the Pocket Friends ponies are always drawn with the same hairstyles as the prototypes, why Baby Sunribbon is always drawn with crimpy hair...because they drew from catalogue images of prototypes...

That said, I don't remember them drawing Sweet Delight as a pegasus. Now that's a prototype I would have liked. That and the other pose version of Love In A Mist. She looked so much prettier...

Adding my +1s to unicorn Baby Truly, blue Sprinkles, golden-haired Twist, nbbe Baby Sundance with her trippy symbol, and the Fancy Swirls.

I would have much preferred the Birthday Pony in the Posey pose, and I wish we could have gotten the Flutter Hideaway. Also chipping in reverse-symboled Nightglider in the Sugarberry pose, even though I love her the way she is. I wish we had both!

If it's alright to toss G3s into the mix, I would have loved the winter carriage pony and the Toola Roola prototype. And I don't think they even count as prototypes, but the two Starcatcher-style pegasus ponies from the Friends Are Never Far Away storybook are gorgeous. *drool*

Seeing/hearing about all these prototypes makes me want to make them as custom ponies...

Just an idea, but it'd be cool if the 35th Anniversary line made some of these cuties, although I doubt they ever would...but the thought is tempting

It's one thing finding out that Hasbro made the childhood ponies of your dreams but sold them in another country. At least then you can get them. But finding Hasbro didn't even MAKE this one...still not totally over that.

Blue Sprinkles because blue is the perfect color for a water-related pony. I have that Iron Fist bag/purse and it is fantastic. So much retro shiny 80s goodness, back on topic my second choice would be Whizzer.

I agree. I was genuinely kind of disappointed when I opened the box on my 6th birthday and she was not blue (and kinda just looked like a lighter Firefly, who I already had, to me).  And I also didn't understand how prototypes worked. But then I got over it because the waterfall was an awesome playset!

Actually, it's been taken from my website. You can tell its the same image from the way the text is cut off at the bottom. The real direct link is below, in context.
http://www.etherella.com/scrapbook2/germany_rainbowponies.htm

I really have nothing to say about that without knowing how the tumblr owner came about it - but I won't say I'm particularly thrilled. I don't like watermarking pictures with tiny details on, but apparently I'm going to have to start doing so :/

The scan comes from a 1987 German pony booklet. This comes from the same booklet:
http://www.etherella.com/scrapbook2/germanbabybig.htm

Not that any of these are particularly significant, except that's definitely a UK baby Lemon Drop in there.

I do prefer the Posey pose, but there's something striking about the white planets and purple stars like she has in her backcard art. (Bonnie Bonnets looks lovely with blue hats in the mix too.) I have to think that the revision to her final form came pretty late in production, since they didn't bother changing the packaging... or maybe they didn't think anyone would notice? ^.^

Glad I could share something interesting! :)

It took me a whole three minutes to realise that was Buttons, not Mimic.

I'm honestly so glad that Buttons isn't in that pose. Can you imagine all the poor Buttonses that would have been sacrificed to become DIY Mimics by over-enthusiastic customisers?

Where is that picture from? It's awesome :)
Whoa- any backhistory on the Buttons/Bonnie/Glider photo?! Gah, I want all three!

It's a picture of a very old Polaroid from the collection of the lovely and talented Ruth Bush. Way back when, before everyone had email, Slack, and a camera in their pocket, the quickest way for Hasbro's employees to communicate about their designs was to take Polaroids and physically send a picture to whomever needed it. (Sorry about the image quality, but I hope it's understandable why it can't be helped!)

You can just barely see Munchy out of frame in the lower right. I think she's in a different pose as well, but I can't be sure which it is. In contrast, the Big Brother ponies in the background seem ready for production, right down to their accessories, but maybe a male-pony expert can spot some subtle differences.

Speaking of Big Brothers, the pony that became Slugger was initially going to have a wagon symbol. I'm not a fan of baseball -- and how does a pony use a glove?! -- so I would have much preferred that. No picture of that one, though, I think he didn't even get past the spitballing stage of design!

Munchy(?) in the foreground right corner, I'd put my bet on she's in the Sugarberry pose like Nightglider.  Artwork looks like it's for two of the Big Brother brush/comb designs; so cute.

Wow, thank you for sharing! And I want her but SO badly now! Siiiggh...

However I am also really glad they changed the pose for Buttons: She is also one of my favourite ponies (in her current pose) and I just don't like that break-neck Mimic pose.

I wish we could see Munchy properly - and, does she look white to anyone else? Perhaps it is just the image quality of the Polaroid, but I think she would have been fun as a white pony. Or is that actually Sugarberry (Strawberry Fair)?

I'm sorry, I know the thread has moved beyond that first commercial clip, but are we SERIOUSLY not going to talk about how disturbing it is that they have the ponies wearing nail polish as though they had humanoid toes?  No-one else is bothered by this?

It would be like their legs ending with a human hand instead of a hoof.  They'd scuttle like crabs.

Wow, I love that prototype TAF photo. :) I wonder why they decided to change poses?

I did notice the little girls putting makeup on the ponies toes in the Brush and Grow commercial but I thought it was advertising pony make up. I think they do something similar in the commercial for the playset that came with TAF Fifi.

Thanks for the history! I don't think Munchy is white, she looks cream to me especially compared to the other white materials in the photo :)

In the commercial for Fifi it showed the kids putting specifically the blue eyeshadow on her eyelids from the compact that came with the set. I've found a couple with the blue eyelids because of that :)

I always thought of it as elephant feet paint as well. As a kid..I am trying to remember where I saw it, whether it's on Star Gleamer's box (because that set came with nail polish here as default). I don't remember...it might be the Perfume Puff Palace box that I remember it from. Squeezer in Gingerbread's pose...? That seems familiar.

Edit: Yep. Small image but you can see it:

Mine wore the nail polish but I used to sweep it across the hooves in one brush stroke. It wasn't neat but somehow a bit more natural given horse biology!

Thanks for posting this photo! I've only seen very small images of those polaroids displayed by Ruth Bush, and I really wanted to see them up close. If there are any more higher resolution photos showing prototypes (like the baby flutters and the picnic gift set) I'd love to see them!

Wow, I love that prototype TAF photo. :) I wonder why they decided to change poses?

I'm thinking they might have used year 5 poses as placeholders to test out the new designs. Perhaps the original plan was to create new poses for year 6, but then instead they decided to reuse ones from previous years. Since it had been a few years since those old poses were used, I guess Hasbro might have thought that would make them feel more "new" than if they had only reused poses from year 5. In the end Munchy was the only one in the set who was in a year 5 pose.

NBBE Baby Sundance is a pony I really wish existed. As well as Paradise without flocking to go with PE (but I could always get a deflock or a Brazilian one, so she doesn't feel quite as unobtainable). Would also have liked to see the furbobs made and paired with the second set of Princess Ponies. Even though they are pretty unbearable in the cartoon, they would have been a fun addition.

I would agree that the Fancy Swirls are probably the most interesting of all the unused pony concepts, but it's hard to say how great they would have looked if actually produced. Of course the packaging art always makes ponies look gorgeous, but there sure was a lot of potential for these.

And yeah, prototype Sprinkles is definitely better than the produced one. If they make a retro one, even if they don't make it just like the old prototype, I still hope they give her a more attractive and vibrant color than what we got back then.

Oh dear, that makes her look like she has elephant feet! :haha:

Hehe!   I did also think of elephant feet initially!  But then I think about everything I ever learned about horse foot anatomy and realised that a horse's hoof is simply one large toe... so really they should be painting the whole hoof!

Remember how there were early Year 2 ponies who actually had lines where their hooves clearly ended?  That makes a lot more sense if you're going to paint hooves.  Although I need to state here for the record that I am very glad they didn't officially encourage children to do so!

Thank you for the history lesson!

I wonder if any of the TAF prototypes survived.... Maybe in a former Hasbro employee's attic. Wishful thinking, I'm sure. Sigh.

Baby Flutter ponies would've been amazing.  When I was a kid, I would pretend that the Summer Wing ponies were baby Flutter ponies.  I would've been SO excited if there'd been actual baby Flutters!

It's funny you should say that, because that's exactly what happened with the Baby Flutters concept -- they were retooled into the Summerwings! You can really see the resemblance in the prototypes:

The initial design called for very fancy filigree wings, but beautiful as they are, Hasbro wisely nixed that idea. ^^; I don't imagine there would be one with intact wings outside of its box!

Randomly going back to this a moment, but that's the nail polish that was sold with this set in the UK release. That nail polish never came out in the US, right? Is this a US commercial? It is, right? What happened there? Were they going to release the US set with the nail polish like they did the UK, and then changed it up to have random free make up in pony sets instead? Mind is boggling O.o.

Back on topic, I am actually kind of happy to see the baby flutters became the wingers. It sort of closes a gap in the design process for me. It makes sense that the starting point for wingers would be baby flutters, but it also makes sense to move away from the delicate dragonfly wings to something more sturdy. Most wingers will survive in a box of ponies with no packaging, which means they're a lot more kid proof than the flutters.

I still love the Flutters more, but they were heartbreaking for kids.

Those baby flutters are really cute. :lovey: but I bet the wings would have been really delicate on them.

Taffeta, I couldn't find the US commercial on YouTube so this one might be the UK one. :)

I wish I'd kept my US makeup pamphlet but I did find it on the Wiki. I just noticed that one of the ponies advertised in the makeup pamplet is Glittering Gem. :wow:

Hrm. Interesting.

So I have the US commercial on a VHS at home that I've had for years from a trade done with Kim Shriner in the late 1990s.

And at first watch I thought them the same but they aren;t.

The French one is probably the same as the UK one - and everywhere the nail polish and make up are inserted, the pose of Star Gleamer is different.

So the prototype pose film is American, but Europe shoved its own stuff in to advertise the make up.

Probably is the same ad as the UK had, but in French.

Now I really want to find that VHS tape :/ Unfortunately, while I can play it, with it being NTSC and my system being PAL, I've never been able to copy it to disc to preserve its contents.

That's very interesting. :) That makes me wonder what other US/UK commercials are similar.

Here's one of the Dance n Prance comemricals (also in French) that features the prototype ponies.

Pretty sure it's  the same as the US one. I haven't watched the VHS in years but I remember the prototypes. I really want that Songster :'( She was drawn with wings in the comic, clearly from that prototype, but I remember getting her and she didn't have wings and I was so sad :/ I mean, I still loved her, but I was promised wings...

I know that the Party Pony/TAF ad is the same as US, too, just different jingle because of the set being differently named...and the lyrics are SO much better than the annoying MLP Mommy nonsense. I loved that set so much as a kid but I don't actually remember seeing the commercial for any ponies on TV back then :/ I think the party pony one and the hair salon were on a VHS release...

Otherwise I'm not sure. Of course some of the commercials (like Princesse De Lumiere/Princess Sparkle) are almost certainly the same as the UK and not the US for obvious reasons ;)

Going back on topic, Baby Countalot in Ember's pose at the end of this commercial:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSeH9VzAlvA
She looks cute. And I think that's the third different pose for that pony in total. They really had trouble with deciding poses in that set :/ first time I've seen the Ember one.

The Canadian (and likely American) Poof n' Puff Perfume Parlour came with that nail polish bottle, albeit with a different sticker.  I had both the bottle as part of my childhood collection and one I opened from MIB many, many years ago.

I wish they had kept Regentropfens prototype symbol! It looks so much nicer with the sun on the right side of the cloud rather than below it, and with the rain drops being below the cloud like in your classic rain cloud drawing ): Nachtlicht was going to have four small stars rather than three big ones too.

Are there pictures of these two?!

It's floating somewhere on Pinterest, an advertisement for german rainbow ponies. Let me see can I find the direct link.

Haishjalaonajgjkajsbak!!!!!! OMG I am seriously in LOVE with those prototypes! I’ve never seen that image before, and now I’m obsessed with that nightlight with the classic rainbow pony hair, and that star shine and raindrop with the 2nd release rainbow pony hair! Thank you for posting!

I've somehow never noticed this on your site. And this is sadly the first to come up in Google. D": Sucks, your scans of this are of something so rare that you'd deserve the credits.

I personaly like the german rainbow hair. :D I'd kill for that Regentropfen though. Not a big fan of her anyways, expect for her lovely rasberry color, but these prototype symbols look so cute - I'd definetly like both Nachtlicht and Regentropfen more if they had kept those symbols. D":

Thank you. It's nice that someone cared that it happened.

@Baby Sugarberry, The Perfume Puff Palace did indeed come with a similar bottle, but the reason I pulled it out as an example is that that bottle that came with the Princess B&G set here did have Star Gleamer on the label. It's a little different, there's text, but you can see the correlation. But thanks to Ponyfan's linking the commercial, it's clear how the French one inserts scenes that the US one doesn't have, and the UK one is probably the same. So that explains that.

I'm starting to think that US got the random free pony makeup instead of the nail polish and lipstick that came with the UK version of Star Gleamer, especially since Glittering Gem is featured in the US makeup pamphlet.  I also enjoy the UK Party Ponies ad jingle more than the US version.

Poor Baby Countalot. I wonder why they went through so many designs changes with her. That blue Cute Curtesy is really pretty. I think  Dance and Prance Songster  and Player should have been pegasus ponies too. :)

Just a note for anyone who liked the Celestials in this thread:

You DO have a chance to have these. (or other prototypes that you like) With the Bridge Direct/Basic Fun. You need to write to them a physical letter (with a stamp) asking for what you want. Enclose a picture too, if you can. The Arena had a letter writing campaign for them a while ago, and then someone at a toyfair confirmed a positive result with the Celestials / Swirly ponies. Since the Bridge is working with Hasbro, there should be no limit to what they can make out of Hasbro's old MLP stuff. But YOU have to tell them!

Haven't written?
They're at

The Bridge Direct / Basic Fun
301 Yamato Rd.
Suite 2112
Boca Raton, FL 33431
USA

Wrote 'em?
You can write them again. It's really significant to hear from customers on actual paper about anything you would like them to do. Interacting/asking them for stuff here (like show that Blue Sprinkle...they made the parlor maybe they want the waterfall too?) or the alt pose TAFs and hammer on the Celestials more. They're not huge like Hasbro, so every letter counts and they care about getting responses.

I like that version of Good Weather, too. Especially the slight difference in colour scheme. I remember when I first found Good Weather at a carboot sale it took a while to realise who she was because the insert one also has aqua hair. I liked the yellow/aqua more than the yellow/electric blue.

I had many instances of "who is this pony" at carboot sales because of pics and comic drawings that didn't match, as the stores where I shopped had a limited range. I never saw her in stores so she was one of my 'huh' moments...

Others included Baby Heart Throb (where were the wings on her hearts, pray?), Baby Splashes (pink hair?!) and Love in a Mist (False advertising!)

Oh I loooove the romance pony prototypes! I want love letter with that pale pink hair! And love tokens pale pink body! Ugh I was so disappointed when I purchased these online back in the 90s because dreamvalley only had the backcard images online, and when they came I was super confused! So I feel you taffeta! Similar situations haha!

Although it’s an illustration, I’ve always wished dazzleglow was darker purple and happy glow was more pink like the backcard drawings.

Blue heart Dazzleglow is a nice shade of darker purple. But she's not as common as the pink hearted one.

Yeah, those Romance Ponies :'( Love Story ended up much too close to Nice & Spicy in colour in the end. I have never accepted Love in a Mist in her real form xD. My sister has her, but I'm not interested...

The prototypes. Sigh. Only Love Token ended up looking like her image.

Is that Love in a Mist by the yellow comb? I think she’s much prettier than the Love in a Mist that was made.

Yep. That image is from the 1992 UK/European insert and that's how they were advertised. I can't remember but I think it's the same image on their backcard as well. The comic drew them pretty much from that image as well so that was how I imagined Love in a Mist looked...

So I've never actually accepted the real one xD.

I really like Love Letter as she is, but to have the prototype as well: now that would be really nice! I like the muted colour scheme a lot.

I think I Like to see that baby truly being made and another vote for those babies that were made with the pony friends. I saw customs of them on DA they were awesome. :)

I'm a passionate lover of the prototype pony designs either in pony or artwork form . When I see a new picture, I try to imagine how I can make this pony come to life. Here're some that are already done  - ENJOY

I have made more like the Romance Ponies, but the pictures need to be transferred from my camera first. When I find them, I post them here in this topic.

I found these additional ponies:

Some other ones I’ve been thinking about: fizzy with hair that matched the cartoon, Pegasus skipity doo, twist with golden hair!

Which ones do you mean? The Fairy Brights aka the Fancy Swirls as they're called correctly? I have done them.

I dream about Tuneful with blue mane end without horn. It was really beautiful colors. Oh, and awesome purple Stardazzle (Dream Beauties)! Birthday Baby Boys, ofcourse, they are best of the best. For G3 I wish see in mass production glittery silver Glitterbelle. Too much pink color in Divine Shine for me. And I need G4 Sweetie Blue! With factory bangs and greengrass eyes! She is so pretty and don't released yet...

Here're some more protoype pony customs I have done since my last post. You are always welcome to post new pictures so I get more inspiration.  :satisfied:

Wow!!!  Your customs are stunning!  I love them!

I would love to have seen Masquerade in the Wind Whistler pose (and I know the Spanish one exists but she's too expensive for me, ha ha).  I had the TE backcard as a kid that showed her in that pose and was so surprised when I found out she was actually in a different pose.

Pandabear, your customs are stunning!  :lovey: I love that you’ve done so many of the prototypes!  I have an idea for a custom for you. Make Merry Treat a unicorn in the Gusty or Glory pose, and give her gold tinsel in her hair. Sure would be pretty!

As for what I wish had been made: the Irresistibles, the pony friends’ human friends, Bubblefish (kitty!), Sweet Pocket, and Lil’ Pocket (the precious pockets needed more poses!), purple Stardazzle.  There’s also a pic of a darker purple Cloud Puff on mylittlewiki I’m kinda fond of.

I know HQG1C already made them but I wish Hasbro had made the other 4 Pretty mane ponies that were supposed to go with scribbled and dabble!

The purple version of the orange glittery dream beauty would have been so pretty too!

Yes!! I NEED to have that!! It looks like it kind of matches the Paradise Estate...you could set it up kind of like a resort community or something. And doesn't it make real-life sno-cones too? I so wish that had made it to production.
