Title: Disney will remake Bambi in new Lionking style
Post by: Zapper on August 20, 2019, 03:34:43 AM
I never paid money to see any of these remakes so I don't feel responsible for this

https://insidethemagic.net/2019/08/bambi-live-action-remake/

Everyone please read the REAL original "Bambi" which is a book by Jewish author Felix Salten who had to flee Nazi Austria and was asking publishers not to change or censor his works to make them more "suitable for children".

He never received royalties as he didn't sell the rights to Disney himself. All he got was a brief mention in the credits of the Disney Bambi movie that was now changed and heavily sweetened up and censored for the American public.

This PSA has been brought to you by me, fan of the original, who doesn't like soulless CG animals voiced by celebs :P

I read the original novel when I was in college. It was quite shocking to me since I'd only know the story from the Disney movie.

Some trivia for others: Hitler ordered the burning of the first editions of Bambi. He was also a massive Disney fan who did fanart of Disney characters :lookround:

I read the original novel when I was in college. It was quite shocking to me since I'd only know the story from the Disney movie.

Hence why so many people these days prefer the Disney classics to the fairy tales and novels they are based on. They're sweet, censored and idealized.
It's no wonder people are disappointed by the originals and call them "dark" or "bad" when they grew up on Disney sugarcoating. Little Mermaid and Junglebook are probably the best examples.

I already know the skunk will make all the fart jokes so I hope they at least won't have that cringeworthy "we all fall in love with feminine versions of ourselves" scene in the new movie. That make-up wearing bunny seriously weirded me out as a child.
They also need to make Faline more active. She was a much more opinionated character who could do things on her own without Bambi's help. She even went against Bambi's belief system once or twice.

One of things that really stuck with me about the original was

Spoiler
Gobo’s death.

The Lion King remake was okay but I am getting a little tired of Disney remaking their own movies so often.

Spoiler
Gobo’s death.

The Lion King remake was okay but I am getting a little tired of Disney remaking their own movies so often.
Spoiler
Gobo's death was much more tragic than the mother's and it's no surprise it wasn't put in the movie. Reading it as an adilt I still get a lump in my throat. It was so real and at the same time served as such a good illustration of the relationship the animals have to humans/their god.
The entire religious allegory is gone from the movie. Instead there is a much more black/white understanding of what is good and what is evil.

I think the new Bambi will be more like their Junglebook remake. Lionking was almost a shot for shot. I think Bambi will claim to be closer to the book (like they claimed with Junglebook) but in the end will still leave out all the "adult" discussions the animals have.
Spoiler
And of course Gobo will live (if he is in there at all). Maybe wounded but eventually will be ok (nursed back to health by another human possibly).

And the forest will of course be American, not German. Only American wildlife so Bambi can fight some large predators. We need more action ;)

I still love the Disney Bambi for its visuals. The watercolor backdrops are goooorgeous and the choir and orchestra are beautiful. Think I needed to mention this before someone tells me I just want to hate on beautiful kids movies.

This is why I never judge a book by its movie.  I've read a lot of books that Disney turned into movies and they are always VERY different.  The Rescuers, The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, Oliver Twist...Disney's versions are basically Fanfiction for the actual books. (Bambi has been on my list to read for a while.  I've been putting it off because I've heard how dark parts of it are and I wasn't in the mood for something heavy.)  The characters might have the same names and maybe they might be in some similar situations but they are never truly the actual story.  Alice in Wonderland (1959 animated), for example, is actually a mix of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.  Even though the movies don't follow the books, I am usually able to enjoy both as I see them as separate entities.  But remaking cartoons into live action is harder for me to enjoy when it's the exact same thing.  I like the animated Jungle Book better than the new live action one.  I haven't even put any effort into seeing Aladdin or The Lion King because I have those movies at home already.  Although I have heard that Will Smith does a good job as the Genie and I may check out that movie from the library when they get it.

I work in a library and considering how many books would make wonderful movies, it bothers me that Disney has lost all imagination is just rehashing what they've already done before.  Seriously, even with fairy tales they haven't touched 99% of what's available.  Why not make Rumplestiltzkin or The Twelve Dancing Princesses or The Princess and the Pea or The Six Swans (which would give us new Princes instead of Princesses) or any Greek myth that isn't Hercules?  And there are plenty of Folk Tales from around the world that could be beautifully translated into animated features but instead we're going to make live action versions of what we've already made because Disney On Ice just isn't a good enough copy.  Up next, Mulan and The Little Mermaid (with new songs by the guy that wrote the music for Moana).

I'll climb down off my soap box now.

The original novel is amazing.  I did like the animated Disney movie, but it's definitely not as intense.  I also read Bambi II: Bambi's Children but I didn't like that one nearly as much.

Spoiler
Gobo's death was so sad.

The part with the dog and the fox always stuck with me.  Excerpt below:

Spoiler
They heard a low labored snarling under the angry barking. Bambi grew uneasy, but the old stag quiet him again. "We don't need to worry about it," he said. They lay still in their warm hollow and peered out. Through the snow and over the roots and branches the fox came springing, crouching, and slinking. A little short-legged hound was after him.

One of the fox's forelegs was crushed and the fur torn around it. He held his shattered paw in front of him, and blood poured from his wound. He was gasping for breath. He was beside himself with rage and fear. He was desperate and exhausted . . . Presently the fox sat down on his haunches. He could go no farther. Raising his mangled forepaw pitifully, with his jaws open and his lips drawn back, he snarled at the dog.

But the dog was never silent for a minute. His high, rasping bark only grew fuller and deeper. "Here," he yapped, "here he is! Here! Here! Here!" He was not abusing the fox. He was not even speaking to him, but urging on someone who was still far behind. Bambi knew as well as the old stag that it was He the dog was calling.

The fox knew it too. The blood was streaming down from him and fell from his breast into the snow, making a fiery red spot on the icy white surface, and steaming slowly.

A weakness overcame the fox. His crushed foot sank down helpless, but a burning pain shot through it when it touched the cold snow. He lifted it with an effort and held it quivering in front of him.

"Let me go," said the fox, beginning to speak, "let me go." He spoke softly and beseechingly. He was quite weak and despondent.

"No! No! No!" the dog howled.

The fox pleaded still more insistently. "We're relations," he pleaded, "we're brothers almost. Let me go home. Let me die with my family at least. We're brothers almost, you and I."

"No! No! No!" the dog raged.

Then the fox rose so that he was sitting perfectly erect. He dropped his handsome pointed muzzle on his bleeding breast, raised his eyes and looked the dog straight in the face. In a completely altered voice, restrained and embittered, he growled, "Aren't you ashamed, you traitor!"

"No! No! No!" yelped the dog.

But the fox went on, "You turncoat, you renegade." His maimed body was taut with contempt and hatred. "You spy," he hissed, "you blackguard, you track us where He could never find us. You betray us, your own relations, me who am almost your brother. And you stand there and aren't ashamed!"

Instantly many other voices sounded loudly round about.

"Traitor!" cried the magpie from the tree.

"Spy!" shrieked the jay.

"Blackguard!" the weasel hissed.

"Renegade!" snarled the ferret.

From every tree and bush came chirpings, peepings, shrill cries, while overhead the crows cawed, "Spy! Spy!" Everyone had rushed up, and from the trees or from safe hiding places on the ground they watched the contest. The fury that had burst from the fox released an embittered anger in them all. And the blood spilled on the snow, that steamed before their eyes, maddened them all and made them forget caution.

The dog stared around him. "Who are you?" he yelped. "What do you want? What do you know about it? What are you talking about? Everything belongs to Him, just as I do. But I, I love Him. I worship Him. I serve Him. Do you think you can oppose Him, poor creatures like you? He's all-powerful. He's above all of you. Everything we have comes from Him. Everything that lives or grows comes from Him." The dog was quivering in exaltation.

"Traitor!" cried the squirrel shrilly.

"Yes, traitor!" hissed the fox. "Nobody is a traitor but you, only you!"

The dog was dancing about in a frenzy of devotion. "Only me?" he cried. "You lie. Aren't there many, many others on His side? The horse, the cow, the sheep, the chickens, many, many of you and your kind are on His side and worship Him and serve Him."

"They're rabble!" snarled the fox, full of a boundless contempt.

Then the dog could contain himself no longer and sprang at the fox's throat. Growling, spitting, and yelping, they rolled in the snow, a writhing, savagely snapping mass from which fur flew. The snow rose in clouds and was spattered with fine drops of blood. At last the fox could not fight any more. In a few seconds he was lying on his back, his white belly uppermost. He twitched and stiffened and died.

LadyMoondancer, do you k ow if they ever released an English translation of Bambi's Children that leaves the two last champers in? I read about how they were removed for the American market. Also, did the version you read call Him "brown him"?

Wow I had no idea that the Bambie movie was ripped off. I mean, I should have guessed knowing Disney's history and the fact they never use original ideas-  but still I did not realize this was based on an actual novel.

Will have to check it out on Kindle.

I read Bambi as a child because I wanted to see the movie but there were no Theaters nearby.  I loved it.  The story of the two leaves still gets to me.  I know they're just leaves, but it's beautiful and so poetic.

I haven't see any of the remakes.  Not sure I'll be interested in this.  But fawns are hard to resist.

I'll give the original a read sometime this year.  ^.^ My anxiety makes me not able to do movie theatres at the moment so I certainly haven't been helping this trend any, so I'll wait until this is on DVD or um...haha you know. I'd love to see something a bit more..artistic? Than another shot for shot remake with Air Bud-styled mouths.

yesss the sequel is really underrated! I guess cause (to my knowledge) it's never been adapted (although I guess I can see why... it's more fantastical than the original, sort of an odd tonal shift). I like it, though.

Anyway, moving back to the main topic... another remake? I'll pass. I'm with Pokeyonekenobie, I want to see something *new*!

Right? Everything in the forest was "alive" somehow. Everything had significance and they were all aware of death.
You could see that being animated but put in a "live action" where the goal is to make everything look "real" and show off your CG muscles? No way the poetry is making it into the remake. The old movie had its own poetry in the music and art but how is a ~realistic remake going to tackle that?

Seriously, this is just about Disney showing off their technology and renewing their trademarks, therefore hardening the grip on the source material. This is the company who wanted to trademark a Mexican holiday.
I would love a new adaption of "Bambi" if someone else did it.

I’m still waiting for Night on Bald Mountain

Disney Movies that make me cry (animated) and not cry (remake)

Beauty and the Beast original made me cry when the beast “dies” remake didn’t

Both Lion King movies didn’t make me cry

Bambi (had to be taken out of assembly when that sad scene was on), I just hope remake wouldn’t make me cry

Never read the book because I despise reading, but man that is sorely disappointing (though not surprising) that they’re remaking Bambi.  That was one of my favorite classics, and it’ll be really sad to see it in such a lifeless and ugly form.

Maybe the new Bambi movie will hew closer to the book.  The new(est) Jungle Book movie actually was way closer to the books than the 1960s movie which I never liked.  I wouldn't say I hate the 60s movie but it's the equivalent of a Dreamworks movie to me.  Fun while you watch it, but nothing under the hood.

It also bugged me how Mowgli was raised by the loving wolf parents, but then the big conflict of the movie is he didn't want to leave . . . Baloo.  Who he met two seconds ago.  So I was actually quite happy with the remake for making the wolves more central to the plot.

Yes, the 101 Dalmatians book is great!  The Disney movie is okay, but I'm sad they cut out Missus / Perdita and the white Persian cat.  (Movie Cruella was a great villain, though.  Probably my favorite part of the movie.)  I read the sequel to the Dalmatians book and, uh . . . not a fan. :P

Not sure if the version of Bambi's Children I read had the original last chapters.  I just remember getting really tired of Deer Wives of the Woods: The Soap Opera.

It also bugged me how Mowgli was raised by the loving wolf parents, but then the big conflict of the movie is he didn't want to leave . . . Baloo.  Who he met two seconds ago.

That's because they completely reworked Baloo's character to be nothing but a cool uncle. The Timon and Pumbaa prototype  "Just chill all day, have fun, no worries, no work" kids love.
When in the book he was the wolves strict teacher and respected by them, therefore Mowgli growing up with him and seeing him as part of the pack.

And of course Disney needed a straight man to Baloo's carefree dude so they reworked Bagheera to be this stick in the mud stickler to the rules whom Mowgli finds annoying. So of course he wants to stay with the cool uncle with his own themesong.

I got angry seeing how many people trashed the Serkis movie (that was work in progress before the Disney remake was announced) just because there was no singing Baloo and no funny monkeys.
Fun fact, Disney's Junglebook was one of the most popular movies in Germany ever. It was so popular that people made a huge fuss about the horribad sequel coming out. The sequel was shown in theathers unlike any other direct-to-DVD Disney sequel at that point and 60 year olds would go and see it. Madness

Meh. Lion King and Jungle Book were the only remakes I've watched, since they're family favourites. I have zero interest in any others.

I work in a library and considering how many books would make wonderful movies, it bothers me that Disney has lost all imagination is just rehashing what they've already done before.
It's mostly down to the nostalgia train, I think. These days, less people than ever before are willing to try new shows and movies. They'd rather stick with what they know, and not bother with anything new.
I mean, to some degree, I understand Disney - why bother with a brand spanking new IP that only a few avid readers have heard about, when you can churn out another Marvel movie and get all that sweet cash with probably less effort?

I still love Owls of Ga'Hoole for example, even though the movie received mixed reviews. But since it didn't do hugely well financially, it's unlikely we'll ever see a sequel to it. That's why I think Disney are more hesitant these days, and would rather keep remaking movies.
Title: Re: Disney will remake Bambi in new Lionking style
Post by: LadyMoondancer on August 23, 2019, 09:43:50 PM
On the one hand yeah, but on the other hand Frozen was a new IP for Disney and it made a zillion dollars . . . not just from the movie, but also merchandising.  I still see sooo many toys for it.  You'd think that would make them want to branch out more, find more classic fairy tales to adapt.

Sidenote, even though there are some book-to-Disney-movie adaptations I'm "ehhh" about, they are SO good at adapting fairy tales and making them . . . not be weird or totally nonsensical or horrible.  I watch a lot of direct-to-VHS "cash grab" cartoons where random companies would churn out a video about whatever public domain story Disney was adapting, and generally the closer they hew to the original fairy tale, the worse they are.  Fairy tales are great as their own genre but they don't make great movies without work.

Like, thank you Disney for not having Aladdin spy on Jasmine while she's taking a bath.  Thanks for not having the evil queen make THREE different "I'm a peddler, buy my poisoned goods!" attempts on Snow White, because it makes Snow White look dumb and the queen look inept.
Title: Re: Disney will remake Bambi in new Lionking style

Ok, so this isn't about Bambi anymore since Bambi is a novel and not a fairy tale. I also said the author did not wish for his novel to be censored or marketed as a "kids book", while fairy tales are super old and harken back to the middleages and beyond, are a mix of cautionary tales, legends and fireplace stories, so...

I have never ever read a version of Aladdin (that was geared towards kids) where he spied on her bathing. I think it goes without saying that these things should be left out when making a version for 6 year olds

Mattel was super bold and sneaky by making their daughter of Little Red Riding Hood part wolf, btw. In the French version the wolf is an even more obvious stand-in for predatory males and at one point he asks Little Red
Spoiler
to take off all her clothes and get into bed with him
When I saw that Ever After High Cerise Hood was the daughter of a werewolf I did a doubletake.

I hate a lot of things about certain fairy tales, for once they are so old their politics are often harmful in hindsight. Like Sleeping Beauty being slept with and impregnated against her will.
Or in general, the hero marrying a child, the heroes torturing people, spousal abuse being normal, women having barely any human rights... the list goes on. Why put that in a kid film? I don't have to be thankful for Disney leaving these things out (allthough kissing comatose women is still their bread and butter )

I am glad my options are not "either Disney or the dollar bin"
Sadly a lot of good stuff is likely not as easily available as the Disney retellings.

Best animated snow queen adaption is the one from the UDSSR to me.
Best Grimm tales adaptions are old Chech, Russian and German liveactions. My big favorite being a particular version of Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot (Snow White and Rose Red... btw has nothing to do with Schneewittchen, the Snow White with the seven dwarves).
Other beautiful live action adaptions include Shelley Duvall's Faery Tale Theater, the Italian movie series Fantaghiro, Tale of Tales (adult), Jim Henson's The Storyteller, etc.

The Disney Snow White is a good adaption of the Grimm version. I also like their Sleeping Beauty, especially for the art and how they used the music from the ballet (hellooo public domain, we need to save money lol).

But I don't want them to do any more as they are veering more and more from the fairy tales they are based on, trademarking them and gaining full control of the narrative and commercial rights. Fairy tales are a cultural treasure who shouldn't "belong" to a huge company. Fairy tales also have different versions and cultural differences, time period differences... whitewashing them, sugarcoating them is an option but should not become the definitive version of something.

Like, give me the Egyptian version of Cinderella already. B- b - but Cindy should be whiiiite and have no ears! Disney said so! XD

Disney's Sleeping Beauty was a really faithful adaptation of the fairy tale, which is why I found it boring.  :P  Did not like Aurora and am unsurprised that her dolls are so often labeled "Sleeping Beauty" instead of her name.  The fairies were the best part about the movie, maybe they should have cut out the princess and have one of them fall asleep, ha ha.

Of course the best version of Sleeping Beauty is the 26(?) part series from Mondo World, where they replace the fairies with Captain Planet looking elemental guys who ride a unicorn, a tiger, a wyvern, and a dragon-turtle, but ALL the mounts have unicorn horns.  Then they spend a big portion of the first episode showing shark-riding zombies, who can shoot lasers from their eyes, invading the kingdom.  It's an absolute trip.  :P

I was never a big Bambi fan...I think even the Disney version was too sad for me as a kid.  I can understand the unrest with a redo and not staying more in tune with the original novel though.

Aside from a few *scrunch face* that's not how she acts moments, I actually was pleasantly surprised with the beauty and the beast remake.  I want to eventually see lion king and Aladdin.  I think...that's about it.

Disney's Sleeping Beauty was a really faithful adaptation of the fairy tale, which is why I found it boring.  :P

They actually added a lot of stuff to that tale. The bickering fairies with opposing personalities and themes, the childish kings, the dark fairy turning into a huge black dragon who tries to kill the prince.
Aurora herself is just a pretty face stumbling through that movie. Maybe that's why the remake of that one centered on Maleficent, one of the most iconic Disney villains (probably) ever :lookround:
Disney themselves know Aurora is a nothing-character. That's why her movie's name is more important than her actual name j/k
I love her character design, tho. If only Disney would release more merch of her in her farmgirl dress. I hate that pink one.

Was snow white originally seen as 'too dark' when it was first made?  I think I remember reading that kids were crying?

I can't answer that. I just know it was a financial gamble and turned out to be a huge success the following Disney movies could not replicate. Lots of people saw Snow White for its technological novelty. It was a bit of a phenomenon.
I watched it when I was really young and the witch and vultures scared me but also I was a kid in the 90s and not the 30s when moving drawn images were still new and exciting and not easy to comprehend for kids.

I cried at Disney movies when I was four and I know lots of little kids still do.  Villains were scary.  My three year old niece screamed and hid when Elmo fell into Grouchland.  So, being too scary is pretty normal for little kids.  I think Snow White was just one of the first times parents took their kids to a cartoon and had them cry.  Older kids loved it.

When Snow White was in theaters the first time, theater owners hated it because it scared children so much that they peed their pants and they had to clean it up.  Walt even said he would never make a Disney villain as scary as the Evil Queen again.

I'm very curious about it.

I didn't know there was a book for Bambi, so I'll have to read that, but I've got a huge soft spot for the movie. My ex-husband's great grandpa was an artist for Disney and I spent the last ten years hearing so many stories about his work. His work on Bambi was some of his best and it was the movie that was 2nd most talked about movie that he worked on. Fantasia was the only one I heard more stories about. Even if my ex and I aren't together anymore, those stories mean so much to me and it makes the movies mean a lot more than they did to me as a kid.

Aside from that, I saw the "live action" (I wish people would stop calling it that) Lion King last week and I really enjoyed it. Part of that was definitely being in El Capitan, loving how much they put into the experience, but as a movie I still liked it. I felt it was a lot of fun and an interesting take on the movie. Of course I have some complaints but they're relatively small ones. Seems I might be in the minority though, haha.

Interesting, but I’m not all that excited. The lion king remake looks visually very nice, but it isn’t meant for expressive storytelling. And since most animated stories are 80 percent expression through visuals and voice, I don’t feel all confident about it. If Disney could make it a bit more cartoony, it’d be better. The best? Just please, please for the love of storytelling just make a new movie!
