Title: What would the 40th anniversary of the franchise mean to you?
Post by: Mana Minori on April 23, 2020, 08:58:37 AM
Some fans consider it as happening in 2024, some fans consider it sooner. Personally, I feel like the anniversary would be in 2021, since I am also taking into account My Pretty Pony as part of the MLP franchise. But I am also wondering what the different generations of fans will be doing to celebrate this great and long 40 years of pastel ponies who have greatly impacted our lives being in the world.

I don’t have hope that we will be getting much of anything from Hasbro or third party companies, given the circumstances we’re going through.

Oh, good question! I guess for me it won't be much more than just a "Holy wow, 40 years!?"-moment. A special release would be awesome (and I mean special, not the first six re-released again or something), but I doubt that I could get my hands on it anyway. All those new G1 ponies that are coming out now (Basic Fun I think?) aren't fun for me either because I can't get them here. Sure, I could order them online somehow, but if I have to do that, then I'd rather buy genuine G1 ponies. The whole fun of those new ponies is that you can buy a "G1" from a toy store like we used to.

I would like a T-shirt though, with something "40-years MLP"-related on it...

For me it is 2022, because the first ponies have 1982 on their hooves (even though no ponies were available in the UK till 1983, there is anecdotal evidence of very early FF ponies in the US at the end of 1982, which fits with most distribution of sets being released right before the Christmas rush...

And also I turn 40 in 2022, so I have always championed 1982, not 1983, as the global start date.

I’m not quite sure what it would mean. I mean, I’m way younger than the franchise is (I was born in 2001, I’d be around 20-23 at that point depending on what year exactly) so I’d be pretty proud. It’s hard for toys to stick around for 40 years, and mostly have stayed the same throughout the ages. I’m not even sure what I would like hasbro to do for it! Perhaps release a reproduction of a few ponies across all gens. So far, all we have is the g1 repros. Which are cool but...let’s bring it all together! Or remake the my pretty pony.

Even as someone who experienced the MLP franchise from the very beginning, I don't have a stake in exactly when the anniversary is declared but I do certainly hope they will celebrate it officially in some way.  I'd love to see Hasbro really hype it up!  I can't really imagine what they'd do though.  Maybe a special release of a repro classic playset since we already have the original ponies by Basic Fun?  I also wouldn't mind seeing a whole big line of retro-styled merch, personally.

I guess it'd mean that it had been 40 years since MLP was created! lol. Some more repros would be nice, I guess. (Maybe another set of the collector ponies, to put with the other repros of them? ;))

I would like a special new character 40th anniversary pony, kinda like the birthday pony! Or bring back iconic characters with TaF symbols like TaF Applejack and Firefly etc. For me a new pony that celebrates/represents the 40the anniversary would be the best for me.

A bunch of merch like shirts, bags, etc.

A cartoon episode special that brings characters from all the generations together

A G1 mini series comic

A new fashion brand collaboration

Some sort of contest for the fans

A 40th anniversary fashion pack for the ponies

Blind bag G1 characters (but this time cute)

Vinyl figures of G1 characters

Plush G1 character toys, maybe even a giant plush!

It’s gonna mean I’m far older than I would like to admit  :P

I’m honestly not sure how I truly feel about it. It’s certainly a milestone, especially considering they’re still going after all these years, but at the same time it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. We’ve already had multiple re-releases so I’m not really sure what they could do to make it a real celebration. Personally, I feel 50 should be the big anniversary. They could do a re-release of the My Pretty Pony I suppose. Really get back to it’s original roots.

Ooooh - what about a TAF pony whose symbols were all different symbols of iconic characters? Like she'd have Firefly's lightning bolts, AJ's apples, etc. Oh, that'd be so cute!!

Also YES more Dollymixes (of all gens - can you imagine how cute G2/G4 chars would be in the Dollymix molds?!?) and a Pretty Pony re-release! Y'all have such great ideas, aaaaa~

Seconding. It would be nice to get something small but with everything that was going on, I feel like plans could be pushed back and make it a really grand anniversary.

I doubt it, but a new character would be cool! Whether Hasbro does one or not, I'm definitely going to make one (probably in MLP Takara g1 style). Balooney Bonanza!

a cartoon episode special with all the gens sounds awesome. I have been dying for an actual crossgen MLP movie, though (but I can wait for the 50th anniversary for that). HASBRO PLEASE!!!!!

35th never made sense let alone 40th actually.

But right now I guess it would mean to me all of us safely coming through the current crisis and being here to share it.

As much as I want my hands on a my pretty pony...it would be better to wait. I second the motion!

This is nuts for me to think about. I so vividly remember going to the store to get the 25th anniversary ponies, it really feels like it was just a couple years ago to me! 40 is impressive, but I agree with the others who say we should wait for the 50th anniversary to go all out. :) That’s a huge milestone and I’m sure Hasbro will want to celebrate it somehow! The basic fun ponies have given me my G1 fix for now!

It means that I'm old.  :yikes:

I personally consider the anniversary to be 1982 because that's the earliest date I have seen hoof-stamps within my collection.

For the next anniversary they should finally start acknowledging all generations and really pander to my old farty self :P
No Mane Six retro anything. Show off what the franchise looked like throughout the years -- and not in a quasi-parody youtube video but officially on all their Social Media channels.

I get that Hasbro might want to wait until til the big 50 (if they do anything For it at all) but what about the generational fan base? I wonder if there are any pony fans that are going to do anything big to celebrate the 40 anniversary.

I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t consider MPP as part of the MLP franchise. I wasn’t around at its start, so personally, I would love to know if anyone was (and what month is was released on), of if it has a date under their hoof, so that I can have an accurate frame of reference thank just spitballing the anniversary as “some month in 2021”. I know others may not really consider MPP’s release to have any impact on the MLP anniversary, but this is just my own subjective thought on it.

The only thing they really did for the 35th was start the Basic Fun ponies. I imagine for the 40th it would be something low key like marking it on the Basic Fun ponies. If they really wanted to do something special maybe some glitterized versions of the collector's ponies with tinsel hair.

Very true point Wardah, Hasbro didn't do anything. And honestly I feel like the "35th anniversary" on the first few Basic Fun ponies was just for marketing more so than celebrating

Transformers got a deluxe full series DVD box set and new figures for the 25th, 4k remastered movie release, a comic book compendium, new figures etc for their 30th anniversary. Then new deco'ed figures and surprise boxes for all the influencers for the 35th. MLP just doesn't seem to get the same treatment

Well I hope they do something, like at least 1 figure or comic or shirt. But I hope the 50th will be something huge and special so I can enjoy some cool stuff in my twilight years haha

Something "new" that's what I would like to see. Perhaps something that should have been but wasn't...an actual release on a prototype or maybe even a mix up of some ponies in different poses? So Applejack like Skippity Doo and Bow Tie like Posey...that kind of thing :)

It wouldn't really mean anything to me. My sweet spot memory for the franchise was the later years of G1. Nothing is ever done to celebrate those ponies. It's always the early years.

But I would like to see tasteful merchandise that I could use within the house, and didn't feel like a kid product. I don't think an anniversary is needed to make that though.

40 years of mostly happy memories.   ^.^
For me, it is as Taffeta mentioned, 1982.  It was my birthday in November that year when I got my first pony.  Since then, pony series has brought many friends, taken my mother and I across the US, over to France, England and Scotland too.  Countless hours trading, searching flea markets and resale shops have passed.  Many of my ponies are priceless and treasured gifts from family members and friends now gone.  Different gens don’t bother me.  I have favorites, but I love them all- save Pony life, which jury is still out on due to the commercial song choice and animation style.  The toys are okay.
I’m hoping to get a little local friend-style group together a few times a year, starting next year, but with my parents being 89, and 88 now, and Illinois being horrid, I have to wait and see what time brings.

What is happening is a complete house and collection room tidy... dusting and cleaning.  There are far worse ways to be quarantined than with a pony collection!

No they won't, that's half the problem. They don't celebrate squat and other companies hafta do it for them. They gave us precious little of what made G3 such a great and expansive gen and tried to tie its identity down to 4 ponies that got revamped for G4. The only G2 that got a shout-out was McDonalds retro Light Heart.

Oh I agree with that. But I do think that they would probably want to call back to the original ones for an anniversary release. I'd personally like them to do both later years stuff and new versions of previously released ponies.
