Title: Repinking Tutorial?
Post by: ZennaBug on August 30, 2012, 03:23:33 PM
A while back, someone posted a tutorial for repinking and I can't seem to find it.

I have all my Little Flitters sitting on out with conditioner in their hair (it was spa day for the ponies) and several of them could really stand to have their hair touched up (I've been to nervous to try).  I also have a Little Whiskers who wants in on the hair dying fun.

Does anyone remember who posted the great tutorial?

Hi Everyone,
This is what you'll need:

1. Liquid RIT DYE, ROSE COLOR
Comes in a white bottle and is a liquid.
2. Bowl, like a cereal bowl size
3. Small spoon
4. Q-tips
5. Running water hot and cold
6. Nail polish remover (Only in case of emergency you can use this to try to get the dye off the actual pony. Be careful around eyes/symbols)

Take a freshly shampooed and washed pony, wet hair. Pour about the size of a nickel or 2 green peas in the bowl of Rit Dye (shake well), add HOT water almost to the top and stir.
Holding the pony upside down, start with the mane since it's harder to do and the tail will be easy to match up. Dip the mane in the bowl doing the lower section first and work your way up to the ear area. Be careful not to let your pony sit in the dye. Just dip as far as you can, being careful not to touch the actual pony. I usually rinse the pony at this stage with cold water.
Now that you have dipped the mane for about 5 to 6 seconds and got a light pink shade, take the spoon and start to spoon the dye mixture on the roots. Have your Q-tips ready. You can use hot water and Q-tips to keep dye off the plastic if needed. I usually do this about 20 spoonfuls for the mane.
Then once it seems to have matched up, rinse the pony in cold water and check out your work. Sometimes when I'm spooning I try not to get the dye on the ends of the pony by folding/holding them up with my fingers and letting the dye run off the top half of the mane.
Now for the tail. This is too easy. Dip the tail into the dye being careful to get it just to the end of the roots. I have found that the dye doesn't effect the pony's color if rinsed right away! I sometimes dip the tail and then rinse right away and then repeat my process until it matches the mane.
It's easy to get a match. Just hold it in the bowl for the same amount of time, about 6 seconds. If you have only added a hint of dye to the hot water then you can kinda play around with the shade. Don't use too much Rit Dye like I did. I got the Taf Yum Yum's hair too pink and then there was no going back. She turned out really pretty though.

In some pics you'll see dark, dark pink and that is Kool Aid NOT Rit Dye!!! This just gets the hair slightly pink. It's messy and you have to keep wiping any spots off the pony but it works too!

Edit: KOOL AID METHOD: This method only gets the hair slightly pink but I suppose if you left it on longer it will eventually get dark enough. I used Cherry flavor Kool Aid.

What you need:
1. One packet of red flavor Kool Aid like Cherry/Strawberry.
2. Q-tips and Nail polish remover
3. Conditioner-I used Pantene
4. small bowl
5. small spoon

Mix about half the packet of Kool Aid with conditioner (about 3 tablespoons) in the bowl. Keep stirring. It takes forever for the Kool Aid powder to get absorbed into the conditioner--about 10 minutes. You don't have to stir the whole time. You can stir it and let it sit a few minutes.
I used my fingers (no gloves so I had better control) to pat and rub the mixture into the pony's hair. You have to really rub it in to get it even. It gets very messy and you don't want it on the pony, so use your Q-tip with water to wipe any excess--nail polish remover if it looks like it will stain.
Be careful when working around the roots but don't be afraid to get it on thick. I let Taf Yum Yum sit with the mixture on about 5 minutes and then I rinsed in cold water. It was too light so I did the whole process again and let it sit about 10 minutes but I wanted it darker so switched to the Rit Dye. I did Sunspot who had completely white hair and her hair got a little pink with the Kool Aid mixture on for about 20 minutes but in the end I used Rit Dye method. Her hair turned out very light. I only dipped her about 2 or 3 seconds and of course spooned it on the mane. I'll add pics in about an hour.

I actually have a different method that works really well for me.

I use liquid Rose Pink RIT dye  and a comb - take the comb dip directly in the dye and comb into pony hair - then rinse. Usually I do this over the sink - holding the pony upside down when I do the mane so there is little chance of the dye getting on the body - but usually it rinses right off and doesn't stain if I do get a drop on the plastic - just be very, very careful with SS's

Tail I do the same way - holding it so the tail is strait over the sink - with the comb you can let the dye wick up to the roots. and the base of the tail.

You can also use the powder as well as the liquid dye, works just as well :)

Cat, that's the tutorial I was thinking of!  Thanks!  :)  Ivy, I'll have to try your method as well.  I'm repinking some Little Flitters, so the wings could get interesting.

I use the powder rite dye, because it's all I can ever find.  If you are picky, and you are using the rose colour, you might want to try adding just the tiniest bit of orange.  Just a drop or 2 to a tablespoon of pink.  I test mine on paper towel, until I get the right shade.  Otherwise, I find it's a little too blue/cool to be an exact match.

Take before and after shots!  I always forget to do that, and the results are stunning!

With my luck if I started mixing colours I would end up with brown...every time I mix colours I get brown...*sigh*

I use simply the cheapest watercolour paint I can find. Those that are usually meant for kids. They're really easy to use and its really hard to mess up. I've managed to get the perfect pink every time. I just mix a cup of water with red paint and dip the ponys hair to the water. Repeat a few times and its done! It will stick to the hair nicely, but wont stain the plastic.

Here are two of my ponies i re-pinked yesterday with watercolours, they both had bright white hair before:

Evelynea - can I ask - does the watercolour not run if the pony's hair gets wet and is there a risk it will stain the ponies bodies?

Your ponies look gorgeous and the pink a pretty perfect match.

I always wash the hair after re-pinking it and I've never had any problems with stains. It was actually raining when I took those pictures and the hair got a little bit wet, but the colour stays in the hair. It works like dye, but much easier.  :)

Here we go! My "tutorial" how to re-pink with watercolours!  :)

I used my Up, up and away for this. This is how she looked before re-pinking:

1. All you need is water and your watercolours. Keep adding red colour to the water with your brush until its red enough. It should be really red. Dont worry, that wont be the colour of your ponys hair.

2. Soak your ponys hair in the water. Just keep it there for a while and check the colour. I've noticed that it doesnt matter if I keep it there for 1 minute or 30 minutes, it will get the right shade of pink every time. (I hope this works the same way with every watercolour brands, with mine it works this way)

3. Just rinse your ponys hair with water. No need for shampooing, its really shiny and clean just after water! I have to say I have no clue what soap or shampoo might do to the color. Maybe nothing. I've only done this on ponies that already had their spa day.

And here she is with her new, pink hair!

This thread is great, I have a Posey who's in dire need of a re pinking! I'll probably give the watercolour method a crack, since I know there's some in the house...

I hope it works for you! Please take before and after pictures, it would be so nice to see how it works for others.  :)

I don't use that kind of dye or watercolours (I might give it a go though)

My method is to take some of my own hair dye (I use manic panic/special effects/SCREAM)
And select a pink colour (Flamingo or something along those lines, I get a bowl and I add one part dye to 2-3 parts shampoo (Depending on the darkness of the colour) and I mix it up and lather it in my pony's hair until it goes bubbly and rinse it off, it needs a few times doing sometimes but this way you can build it up and make sure you don't over pink.
I've also done this using conditioner and soaking..
I'll have to take some pictures one day :)

I love all these alternate methods!  :)  One of the repinking candidates is currently wearing a foil hat in my window (my first sunfading project).  As soon as she's back to white, I will gather up the ponies and start!

Hmmm...the use of watercolor paint makes me wonder...would food coloring work, or would it potentially bleed onto the pony's body? Has anyone heard of this or tried this?

I saw someone re-pinking with food colour in a finnish pony blog.  Apparently it will stain the pony easily while you are re-pinking, but after you are done, it wont bleed out of the hair.

great tutorial Evelynea, though I can't try it yet as I have no pony who needs repinking... other than steamer who has a bright pink tail and faded mane... which is actually nice looking XD
