Title: OK Seriously I need moral support!!!! Horn UPDATE :) Picture added
Post by: tulagirl on December 20, 2012, 09:30:34 AM
Please post your before and after photos. I am going to attempt to save this little gem and its going to be ToUgH!

I need moral support as my sweet pony goes into a very long surgery. Wish us well.

Well she is out of surgery now and resting well. As you can see I couldn't separate all the colors mixed up in the rats nest hair, but I did my best.  Have no idea if I did the straw curls right. Guess we will find out tomorrow. LOL  My poor neck just wouldn't let me work on that hair the way I wanted to...

Oh my goodness...I am not going to be able to get every little colored hair in place but I have tried with the first wave of surgery.  Pony still under anesthesia...being tended to by Glory while Doctor me has lunch. lol

She looks pretty good in her "before" - I bet she'll be fantastic after!  Try also using a toothbrush or a cosmetics brush to pull strands in the right direction that are getting tangled as you go along.

Thanks I did my best....not too much of a perfectionist with these sorts of things especially since I know I am totally keeping her.

She looks gorgeous!

The only suggestion I can come up with for her horn, is to maybe pop her head off and stuff it with papertowels or something similiar.  Does that make sense?? Ya know, enough so it will push back out the plastic.  I have done it before but I also used very hot water to help soften the plastic.

I use a kettle and (holding the hair out of the way) dip her horn into a bowl of kettle water. I've done a few ponies with smooshed horns without ruining curls. Besides hot water I'm unsure if anything else would give a permanent result, perhaps pony headgear? make a brace and tape the horn to it?

You need to make the plastic hot to get the smashed horn out- boiling water or I used to have this heating pad I'd stick something into to make the plastic nice and soft before manuvering (makes getting heads off easy too)

Great job on the curls!

There are a few options for fixing her horn - you can boil her horn in water (only the top of her forehead needs to be dunked, so it shouldn't be too hard to keep the hair out of the way) and then help it stay up with a ribbon wrapped around the base and behind her ears/around her neck until it sets.  You can also try just the ribbon on its own, though it may take a fair bit longer.  Stuffing out her head with cotton or fibrefill is another option to help get it back into the right shape.   Good luck!

I guess you should have fixed the horn first. D'OH! Well, the worst that could happen is her hair gets a bit messed up. And man, if you could get that hair looking like THAT after the mess it was, then you can more than repair a mess from a horn-boiling!

I used a small plastic rubber band to fix Mimic's horn. I left it on for a couple days and it worked for me.

Awww she looks so lovely now. ^_^ you must be very proud.

I tried to get one on Ebay once - and failed - and I'm so in love with her so it's great to see her being looked after by Dr Tulagirl!

Heat elements mean different things depending on what you are comfortable using. I don't like a flat iron heat so I used my curling iron on heat setting 4.  Mind you the hair is loaded with gobs of conditioner before I ever use the heat.  A test run is used on hairs under the mane that if damaged wouldn't affect the look of the pony. I have never ruined one yet.

Heat elements: Any form of heat you want to use that you have had success with not burning or damaging a pony. Boiling water (or boil perming), flat iron, heating pad, curl iron, hot steam...there are many  ;)

I have been restoring dolls for years and I use many of the same elements with them give or take a heat setting depending on the decade or hair type.

I wanted to share this because this was the worst frizz I have seen on a pony, but I don't ever assume they can't be made nearly mint by just restoring them.  I prefer the type of restoration that works with the original parts of the item.  Then if that is no longer possible I would consider but rarely do it...removing something and adding new.  That is not my favorite as it ruins the value.  Restoration should really be only to make an all original product look better with the least amount of change to the product and its parts as possible.

Many ponies are never considered because they look this bad, but there is a gem in them worth saving. :)
