Title: Best MLP pony toy for a little boy?
Post by: MyLittleLambie on November 14, 2013, 05:05:46 AM
My co-worker told me her son really likes the new My Little Pony cartoons.  She's against the idea of getting him anything pink or girly, but I'd love to get him a pony toy!  Any suggestions for a current toy out there? (Actually, he'd probably really like a Spike because he loves dinosaurs/dragons.)  He's 3.

My son is 2 and a half and his favorite MLP are Rainbow Dash and Applejack. There not very girly or pink and they're still the characters from the show. He'd be so happy with them! Especially if you give them to him loose you can bypass the girly packaging. Or I'd try some of the blind bags. My son loves those too.
Hope that helps a little

Ugh, tread carefully. :(

Spike might be a good idea. I suppose even the train set would be too girly since there's pink in it and such... It's really too bad there aren't more toys of the stallions in the show-- Big Macintosh, and such.

Perhaps one of the Blind Bag sets?

Although I don't believe in putting toys into boy or girl categories, or better yet pulling the gender card with children, kids like what they like, let them be, it doesn't hurt anyone.

In any event, I know others don't feel that way, or they do but not when it comes to their own children.

So to answer your question I suggest going with rainbow dash, spike or shining armor, those are all pretty neutral non girly characters :)

I agree with MikeysGrrrl, on all points.

I'd also suggest a Rainbow Dash for this little boy.

I'd go with the Spike plush from Build-A-Bear!  I think he's $10 or $12.  You don't need to "build" him - he's already pre-assembled :)  I think that's the least-girly for the MLP products I've seen.  The train set is pretty pink-dominated, so that probably isn't what she's looking for - unless the boy loves trains lol.

If you want one of the boy unicorns, look on eBay and someone may be selling a single of him (Shining Armor I believe is his name).  Originally I think he came with Princess Cadence, but if you only want the boy, you may be able to find him "loose" on eBay or on the sales section here at the arena.

Oh - and I don't know if he'd like it, but - you could also go with the Funko Dr. Whooves!  He's brown with a tie.  There's also the Funko of the wonderbolt pegasus (but don't ask me her name because I have no idea - she's sold at Toys R Us :))

Good luck!!! :)

ask your coworker if he has a favorite, first! :)  then see if someone has the pinkie pie boutique car you can put the pony in; a lot of collectors want the pony but not the accessories, and the car is mostly black, so it should be ok with his mom...

my son liked the dash and the jack and then the luna when he started liking bad naughty characters  like starscream from TF. he is a little older so i would (personally) go for spike indeed :) now my son at 5 and a half likes the boy blind bags, he claimed my cherry fizzy double as his own

Dr. Whooves funko vinyl? That'd be a good one!

I would be weary of blind bags, since he is a three year old, unless his parents are okay with him receiving such small figures. Safety is important when you don't know a child's habits.

I like the idea of a BAB Spike as a gift. Or the Shadowbolt Dash is something that isn't overly pink, and neither is the packaging.

It really saddens/angers me that his mother is against getting him toys she perceives to be "girly" though. :(

me too :S

The same can probably be said for all of us. :( Some people are way too focused on gender identity norms but unfortunately it's ultimately her choice.

I like the idea of the Doctor Whooves Funko, seems like a great idea!

I don't necessarily agree Funkos are a good choice- they are very heavy and have sharp corners-   they are kinda big for 3 year old hands.  My nieces and nephew prefer the "playful" size (the little ones).

I agree the BB Spike is super cute- he is also inexpensive.

I think the Build a Bear Spike is a great idea :) I wouldn't recommend Funkos since they're heavy and have kind of pointy edges with their hair. I got whacked in the face with the hard part of a Puppy Surprise when I was little and boy did it hurt XD So I don't recommend something as hard as Funkos lol. He might like a Rainbow Dash or Applejack like the others have said :)

Maybe you can look into giving him a Big Brother pony? They themselves are supposed to be boys and they have masculine builds, colors, and symbols. 4-Speed, Barnacle, Wigwam, Daddy Apple Bright, and Quarterback all seem like good ideas to me. :) I mean, obviously don't spend a butt-ton of money on a G1 if it's just going to be played with, but a pony with age spots or a haircut can find new life if only he could be loved by a child again. :)

Since he's so young though, you should ask his mom if he's a chewer before you proceed with a G1. Vintage plastic might not be such a great idea for a child to put in their mouth. :whoa:

EDIT: Oh herpderp, I just noticed that you meant current ponies. :whoa: Sorry. (I put the idea out there though because I also have a very conservative coworker against boys playing with girly things, but she has the sweetest little boy ever and I'd love to give him a Big Brother when he's old enough to not destroy it.)

Whatever one he wants :3

If the mom is against "feminine" toys, perhaps Rainbow Dash because she's blue and has a tomboyish personality. A bunch of blindbags would also be a good idea.

You can find Shining Armor and Spike right here in the (For Sale - For Auction) section for cheaper then ebay.

The Spike BAB sounds great!!  His mother was talking about Snips & Snails for boy characters, but I don't think there are any toys for those 2.

Oh, I also considered getting him the G1 giraffe!  Giraffes are "his" thing, but I was kind of waiting to see if the MLP thing was only a 3-yr old "phase" because I rather keep G1's for myself!

It really saddens/angers me that his mother is against getting him toys she perceives to be "girly" though.

I think it's more about acceptance with the rest of family.  Her husband would probably not be OK with "girly" toys.  The boy has longish hair (not That long... just never been cut yet), so he is already perceived as a girl by strangers.

The only snips and snaps that I've seen are BB size, which as others have stated may or may not be ideal for someone so little.

The giraffe is a cute idea as well. I know that a friend of mines son has been into MLP since he was 2, and he's almost 4 now. It's really hard to tell with kids whether its a phase or not, especially when they are so young.

I think at that age, kids are just happy to get something, so I think he'll love anything that you pick out :)

What about the molded hair Applejack? Orange and yellow are fairly "not feminine" colors.

I don't like to use the term "gender neutral" so much since it usually is just synonymous with "not feminine". As though male was the ideal state and feminine was just a bad thing to be.

Lets not turn this into a thread about gender and toy lines, its not what the OP is really asking.

I agree with the mention of finding out who his favourite is :) I think thats the best step and if you prefer to go with a surprise then any Spike or Applejack related toys are a good plan.

Zecora might also be a nice choice his mother may not object to. No pink, neutral colors and she is kinda a zebra so like a zoo animal type. Just a suggestion.

Man, this is really hard, considering that MLP just plain is very girly no matter how much you try to deny it.

I'd say Rainbow Dash or any blue ponies would be okay though! People who think like that are big on the color schemes of toys.
I also like the idea of giving him a Shining Armor too.

I'd probably be against giving the kid any older gens though, simply because they're hard to come by and it really isn't worth risking him playing rough with them.

Whatever you choose, I wish you the best of luck!

It'll be a surprise... so I'll stick with Spike, Applejack or Rainbow Dash... probably loose.  (And the mom is against "princess" stuff for girls too!)

I think it is NOT the point about girly or boysey at all.
I have 5 grandsons and ALL of them have played with MLPs - Windy - they love her hair, Gingerbread cause she looks as if she is galloping......and so on. They have an old original MLP stable and they play quite happily with a pink roofed item.......colour and so on is not their problem. Having a pony with a soft tail to swing it around as they chase each other screaming is fine with me (and their Mum.....but she is my daughter - so she is okay with boys and MLPs!)
They get older and as all kids boys or girls - change their likes......Star Wars, Ben 10. Trucks all in a days play!    :frolic:

Aside from Fluttershy, my first thought were these figures by Funko.

My nephews love rainbow dash, mostly because she's just really cool!  She likes things that boys like,  such as racing and joking around. She would be my pick, but the bab spike is pretty cool too!

I agree that BaB Spike is probably the best choice for a three-year-old.

My son is 4 years old and is obsessed with his sister's Glimmer Wings Rainbow Dash. I also bought him a plush Rainbow Dash and a plush Applejack because he wanted them. I never yell at him for playing with his sister's toys, she will, but I won't. He is autistic though, so anything that he shows interest in and and relate to then I'm all for.

I would suggest Rainbow Dash as Shadowbolt since it has a boyish superhero look to it.

Update:  I gave the little boy a Raindow Dash playful size & a McD Twilight Sparkle & McD Princess Celestia (which is actually pink!)... since those are extras I happen to have.  I actually gave them to mom to give to the boy, and she seemed ok with them... even the pink one!

So, I think maybe she didn't want to BUY "girly" stuff for her son, but she's ok with him having them.  Yay!!
