I've had my Paypal account since 2010 and it's remained largely unchanged, maybe a new phone number or to update expiry dates on cards. Anyway, for whatever reason they're wanting to confirm my identity by either sending a photo of my ID or something with my name and SSN on it. I know they already have access to my bank and all but I'm feeling a little uncomfortable about this. Why now after all this time?
Did anyone have to do this? What happens if I ignore it?

Sounds like a scam to me. Probably someone wanting to steal your identity. Best ignore it.
-
Call Paypal to confirm and avoid a possible scam.
-
Yikes, did they request via email? Definitely sounds like a scam.
-
It's a notification on the account itself.
Calling is a good idea.

I can vouch for BlackCurtains, I quit using Paypal years ago because they wanted the same thing from me, and they locked my account until I gave them what they wanted. X( Even then it was temporary, and I eventually closed my account because I didn't want to mess with it. Hope you have better luck!

It's because when you reach a certain (used) amount the level of (law-based) identification increases. I don't think it's a scam but you can call to double check.
-
Update. I got around to calling today and it's a legit thing. A new government regulation is making them do it but most of the time they can verify a persons identity through public records. They could not find me that way :ninja: sooo had to ask through my account to provide proof that I am who I say I am. Though the dude I talked to said it only mattered if you do certain things with your account like transferring money from a bank account or signing up for Paypals credit card.

If this is true, paypal can suck it. Makes me glad I don't have it.
-
Why? It gives some security too regarding sellers who receive your money through Paypal? They have been identified which lowers the risk of being a scam?
-
Hmm. Interesting. I can see why they would want to do this to cut down on fake accounts and such, but it's still annoying.
-
I think they did this to me like 15 years ago- it was because I think that there was another person using the same IP address as me? I forget what it was. I gave them the info. Haven't had any problems...
Ebay is greedy/evil/etc., but NOT having an paypal account is seriously a liability if you shop on ebay

I personally would rather have paypal randomly confirm accounts if that's what's needed to keep things more secure...
-_- identity theft is scary enough...
So I think it's not really about YOU, but about other people who might want to pretend to be you.
-
Yeah, I don't mind. My main concern was why after all this time and if it was really from Paypal.

I would either call them or do a live chat on there site. I had better luck doing a live chat on there then getting a working phone number!
