Title: What's the best random word you've ever come across?
Post by: Pokeyonekenobie on September 12, 2017, 08:32:03 PM
I was looking for amusing word puns and came across the word "Flummadiddle".  Yes, it's a real word.  It means something foolish or worthless (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/flummadiddle).  I need to find places to use it now.

What other absolutely fabulous words are hiding out there that you've come across?

Ooh, I love words, the more random the better!
My all-time favourite is floccinaucinihilipilification, meaning a disregard for or a belief that something is worthless. It could be said I have a floccinaucinihilipilification of flummadiddle.
Other favourites include agroof, magniloquence, ultracrepidarian, kafuffle, insapphirine, defenestration, fantod and flabbergasted. A lot of fun can be had trying to get them into conversation.

Okay, flummadiddle might just be my new favourite word! :D
'Sesquipedalianism' has been one of my go-to weird words for the past few years, which is using excessively long words when a shorter or more commonplace word would do the job just fine. It probably appeals to me because I am guilty of being incredibly sesquipedalian myself. XD

I've always been fond of the Norwegian word 'angstskrik', for having 7 consonants in a row. As for English words, I'm a big fan of kerfuffle myself.

My favourite word is 'puffling'. It's a baby puffin and has to be the cutest word in the world :D

Oh my Gods that is the cutest name for a baby animal EVER!!! I had no idea they were called that. I assumed they were called chicks.

I also really like the word "nibling".  It refers to nieces and nephews just like sibling refers to brothers and sisters.  I love that I can claim to have 13 niblings.  :)

Lugubrious-It means depressed and cynical. A glass is completely empty person. But it kinda sounds like something you'd do to help maintain your car.

Yesteryear-Its so old timey and nice sounding.

Odious-Sadly nothing to do with smells. It means an obnoxious or repugnant person/situation.

Gessunteit- I prefer to say this instead of bless you, because its such a weird word.

predilection-a strong bias in favor of something.

In association with Fireball it has double the value ;)

A lot of good ones already. Nincompoop is also a good one.

And in Japanese, Kakkikyuuka is always a favourite of mine (Summer holiday). It's a lot of fun to say that word xd. Also Karappo creates much amusement when said aloud (it means empty).

I have to say that I thought of this thread at Comic Con yesterday.  Zachary Levi did a panel and kept using uncommon words (for most people, I knew what all of them meant already) and he would say "It's a real word...look it up".

Defenestration is one of my favorites as well!  Back in high school during AP European History my class got collectively obsessed with this word and we'd all use it literally as much as possible once we learned what it meant.  It was constant and we were very creative at thinking up ways to fit it into conversation, or even answers on tests.  I think our teacher was ready to defenestrate us during that phase hahahaha

In college a friend and I started writing a musical called "Defenestration."  We did not get far on it.  I wonder if I could find the notes for it anywhere...

Clowder, the term for a group of housecats.  Personally, I'd call a group of housecats a "threat" or a "plot" because any time 3 or more of mine get together, they make plans to break something.

I've been reading this thread for naming ideas for cats, that really cracked me up!
